• Best Linux dist for .NET developer looking to learn Groovy (and never used Linux)

  Hi, I am planning to learn Groovy, but I want to do so on a Linux OS (because such an open minded approach will teach me more about IT and I have Windows Server VMs). Anyway, which Linux distro is the easiest to use and requires the least amount of knowledge on commands etc? As I am new to Linux, I want a dist. which doesn't require command-level knowledge (I am not at this level with Linux but I am with Windows Server). • Clean file separators in Ruby without File.join

  I love anything that can be done to clean up source code and make it more readable.  So, when I came upon this post, I was pretty excited.  This is precisely the kind of thing I love. I have never felt good about ‘file separator’ strings b/c of their ugliness and verbosity. In Java we have: 1: String path = "lib"+File.separator+"etc"; And in Ruby a popular method is: 1: path = File.join("lib","etc") Now, by overloading the ‘/’ operator on a String in Ruby: 1: class String 2: def /(str_to_join) 3: File.join(self, str_to_join) 4: end 5: end We can now write: 1: path = 'lib'/'src'/'main' Brilliant!

• Graffiti is a Sinatra-inspired Groovy Framework

  Playing around with Sinatra the other day and realized I could really use something like this for Groovy. Thus, Graffiti was born. It’s basically a thin wrapper around Jetty. At first, I thought I might write my own server for it (everybody needs to do that once, don’t they?), but decided to invoke the ’simplest thing that could possibly work’ principle.   When given multiple opportunities from various software giants, as a fresher out of school how should one decide which company to go for? Just as an example I have offers from two companies, won't name them but the two biggest dream companies for any SDE. While one company offers tremendous learning opportunites and and a good pay but coupled with really bad employee support and perks. While the other offers a relaxed work environment where learning happens by choice, with a slightly lower pay but amazing employee facilities and perks. Assuming the fresher has a plan to go for his masters degree in two years what are the most important things he should be looking at?

  We have many great tools which helps a lot when programming, such as good programmers text editors, IDEs, debuggers, version control systems etc. Some of the tools are more or less "must have" tools for getting the job done (e.g. compilers). There are still always tools which do help a lot, but still don't get so much attention, for various reasons, for instance, when they were released, they were ahead of their time and now are more or less forgotten.   I am beginner in software development. I noticed when I try to learn one technology let's say .NET I loose my grip over other for example Java. I thought it would be better to concentrate on one technology either Java or .NET to make significant advancement and be an expert, because they can be many details which one can ignore when keeps on changing between technologies. Is my decision right? Do experts choose this approach? Update: Should I pursue my career knowing one technology or not?

• Ignore "Bad: new and old password are too similar"

  I receive this message when trying to change my password: "Bad: new and old password are too similar" The passwords' "similarity" is irrelevant for my needs, so I'd like to bypass this. I tried sudo passwd $my_username I thought this had worked because I got a message: passwd: password updated successfully However, the password change has no effect after leaving the terminal, and my old password is still the only one recognized. Any ideas? thanks

• Is "no installation" software a good thing?

  I am building an application that will, hopefully, be used by developers. To be appealing to developers I want it to be lightweight, small in size, and with no installation (e.g. xcopy). I trust more an application without installation to not put garbage in my registry, to be lightweight etc. My friend thinks the opposite: An installer puts shortcuts on the desktop / menu for me, it ensures cleanup via the uninstaller, and seems more official. I'm curious - what is everyone's take on this?
