  I have a Visual Studio 2008 solution with two projects (a Word-Template project and a VB.Net console application for testing). Both projects reference a database project which opens a connection to an MS-Access 2007 database file and have references to System.Data.OleDb. • C# COM objects with VB6/asp error

  I'm trying to expose a C# class library via COM so that I can use it in a classic asp web site. I've used sn - k, regasm and gacutil. About all I can do now though is echo back strings. Methods which take Class variables as input are not working for me. ie my test method EchoPerson(Person p) which returns a string of the first and last name doesn't work. I get a runtime error 5 - Invalid procedure call or argument. Please let me know what I am missing. Also I have no intellisence in VB. What do I need to do to get the intellisence working. • ActiveX control loading but not activating correctly (only when using in Reg Free COM)

  I have an ActiveX control (created using C#) that I am adding to a form in Visual FoxPro using late binding. It works without problems when I register the control. I want to use reg free COM and created necessary manifest files. Now it load and displays in an inactive state until I double click or programatically activate it. I don't think it has anything to do with the reg free com manifest files. However is there something I need to do to set it up before/after making the late binding call AddObject()? this.AddObject('OleControl1', 'oleControl', 'SomeCompany.SomeOleControl') When I check the OleTypeAllowed Property of the OleControl created by AddObject() it is 1 (Embedded OLE object) instead of -2 (ActiveX object). So the OleControl got instantiated to the wrong type. I also tried the following: DEFINE(d) a subclass of OleControl and set the property OleTypeAllowed = -2. Used late binding to load the control. It did not work as required. The OleTypeAllowed came back as 1 Registered the ActiveX control. Added the ActiveX control to the project as a subclass using the visual editor. Unregistered the control. Used late binding to load the control. It did not work as required. The OleTypeAllowed came back as 1. Is it possible to load the OleControl as a ActiveX control? Any input from VB that I can convert to FoxPro would also be appreciated.

The object instantiates its own threading.timer object and carries out a number of background process including periodic interrogation of an oracle database and delivery of emails via smtp according to data detected in the database. I've got a CodeTemplateEngine, with two derived classes VBTemplateEngine and CSharpTemplateEngine. This question regards creating the property signatures based on columns in a database table. Using the IDataReader's GetSchemaTable method I gather the CLR type of the column, such as "System.Int32", and whether it IsNullable. However, I'd like to keep the code simple, and instead of having a property that looks like: public System.Int32? SomeIntegerColumn { get; set; } or public Nullable<System.Int32> SomeIntegerColumn { get; set; }, where the property type would be resolved with this function (from my VBTemplateEngine), public override string ResolveCLRType(bool? isNullable, string runtimeType) { Type type = TypeUtils.ResolveType(runtimeType); if (isNullable.HasValue && isNullable.Value == true && type.IsValueType) { return "System.Nullable(Of " + type.FullName + ")"; // or, for example... return type.FullName + "?"; } else { return type.FullName; } }, I would like to generate a simpler property. I hate the idea of building a Type string from nothing, and I would rather have something like: public int? SomeIntegerColumn { get; set; } Is there anything built-in anywhere, such as in the VBCodeProvider or CSharpCodeProvider classes that would somehow take care of this for me? • Holding value in collection

  I have a application which is on timesheet. I have total of 54 columns out of which 10 columns are visible rest invisible. First 3 columns are Project, MileStone and Classes. Rest are Sun- Sat work hrs. Now I have a column named 'taskid' as SunTaskID,MonTaskID and so on till SatTaskID for holding each days taskid. Now on the selection of SunHrs (Sunday's Work Hrs), i retrieve that days taskid and on the basis of task id i retrieve attachments which is displayed under a listbox. Now the problem is that since a day can have multiple attachments and a user can attach multiple attachments at time. He can enter values from grid to. Grid cells are editable. I am using BindingList(of TaskClass) in VB.Net for binding grid. I have total 54 properties n my task class. So i want to what property do i need to hod each days attachment and in what way. Earlier I tried Dictionary. But i was not aware of its usage as a property so i gave. Then prepared a separate class for attachment but, it was difficult to synchronize the existing attachments with taskid...

• How to exit grid with ctrl-TAB when grid is on a tabpage (onkeydown works when grid not on tabpage)

But when the grid is dropped on a TabControl tabpage, the ctrl-tab looks very different to the sub above. e.keycode is seen as controlkey {17} I realize that by default cntrl-Tab moves between tabpages. I need to override this behavior. My thought is I probably need a subclass of the tabControl which will pass the keycombo through just as the form does but I confess to being clueless as to how to accomplish that. I tried to override the onkeydown of a tabcontrol subclass and just issuing a return and not and base call to onkeydown if the ctrl-tab combo was pressed but it seemed to see the e.keycode as controlkey as well. FWIW I tried a different combination like ctrl-E and got pretty much the same result with focus disappearing from the grid but not going anywhere I could detect. The sub still saw the e.control as controlkey. Oddly, ctrl-X, ctrl-A etc all work in the grid and a ctrl-Delete combo I put in the subclass for deleting a row works fine. Once again - grid directly on form and it all works. I'm definitely over my head on this one. Guidance much appreciated. vb or c# fine. TIA

• How do you save and retrieve a Key/IV pair securely?

  I'm using VB.Net's RijndaelManaged (RM) to encrypt files, using the RM.GenerateKey and RM.GenerateIV methods to generate the Key and IV and encrypting the file using the CryptoStream class. I'm planning on saving this Key and IV to a file and want to make sure I'm doing it the right way. I am combining the IV+Key, and encrypting that with my RSA Public key and writing it out to a file. Then, to decrypt I use the RSA Private key on this file to get the IV+Key, split them up and set RM.Key and RM.IV to these values and run the decryptor. Is this the best method to accomplish this, or is there a preferred method for saving the IV & Key? Also, what's the best way to construct and deconstruct the byte array? I used the .Concat method to join them together and that seems to work well but I can't seem to find something as easy to deconstruct it. I played with the .Take method that takes the first x # of bytes and it works for the first part but can't find anything that gets the rest of it.

  Hi All, I am developing a game in VB6 (plz don't ask me why :) ). The storyboard is ready and a rough implementation is underway. I am following a "pure-software-rendering" approach. (i.e. no DirectX, no openGL etc.) Amongst many others, the following "serious" problems exist: 2D alpha transparency reqd. to implement overlays. Parallax implementation to give depth-of-field illusion. Capturing mouse-scroll events globally (as in FPS-es; mapping them to changing weapon). Async sound play with absolute "near-zero-lag". Any ideas anyone. Please suggest any well documented library/ocx or sample-code. Plz do suggest solutions with good performance and as little overhead as possible. Also, anyone who has developed any games, and would be open to sharing her/his code would be highly appreciated. (any well-acknowledged VB games whose source-code i can study??) • Extract the vb code associated with a macro attached to an Action button in PowerPoint

  I have about 25 PowerPoint presentations, each with at least 45 slides. On each slide is a question with four possible answers and a help button which provides a hint relevant to the question. Each of the answers and the help button is a PowerPoint Action button that launches a macro. I am attempting to migrate all the questions/answers/hints into a SQL Database. I've worked with Office.Interop before when working with Excel and Word and I have plenty of SQL DB experience, so I don't foresee any issues with actually extracting the text portion of the question and answer and putting it into the db. What I have no idea how to do is given an object on a slide - get the action button info - Get the macro name - and finally get the macro's vb code. From there I can figure out how to parse out which is the correct answer and what the text of the hint is. Any help/ideas would be greatly appreciated. The guy I'm doing this for said he is willing to do it by hand... but that would take a while.

So what i've tried to do is place a System.Threading.Sleep() call in different places in the code above. The problem is that instead of making the computer look like its thinking, the program waits and then puts the X and O together at the same time. Can someone help me make it so that the program puts an X wherever i click AND THEN wait before it places an O? Edit: in case any of you are wondering, i realize that the computers AI is ridiculously dumb, but its just to mess around right now. Later on i will implement a serious AI..hopefully.

My program then looks at this data and copies it into text boxes. The operator then approves and saves the record. So my code uses IHTMLFormElement and loops round form elements and adds values. However I only really use this to log in to paypal. See my code... • Effective books for learning the intricacies of business application development?

  I am a self taught "developer". I use the term loosely because I only know enough to make myself dangerous. I have no theory background, and I only pick up things to get this little tool to work or make that control do what I want. That said, I am looking for some reading material that explains some of the theory behind application development especially from a business standpoint. Really I need to understand what all of these terms that float around really talk about. Business Logic Layer, UI abstraction level and all that. Anyone got a reading list that they feel helped them understand this stuff? I know how to code stuff up so that it works. It is not pretty mostly because I don't know the elegant way of doing it, and it is not planned out very well (I also don't know how to plan an application). Any help would be appreciated. I have read a number of books on what I thought was the subject, but they all seem to rehash basic coding and what-not. This doesn't have to be specific to VB.NET or WPF (or Entity Framework) but anything with those items would be quite helpful.

• Save Xml in an Excel cell value causes ComException

  I am trying to save an object (Class1) as string in a cell value. My issue is that from time to time I have a ComException: HRESULT: 0x8007000E (E_OUTOFMEMORY) (It is kind of random but I have not identified any particular pattern yet) when I write the value into a cell. Any ideas will be welcome For illustration purposes: Let Class1 be the class to be converted to an Xml string. (Notice that I removed the xml declaration at the start of the string to avoid having the preamble present- non printable character) <Class1 xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" <ElementID HL690375</ElementID </Class1" Class1 myClass = new Class1(); this class is converted to a string s. s= ConvertObjectToXmlString(myClass); then s is assigned to a cell Range r = Application.ActiveCell; r.Value2 = s; Note: (1) If the string is too big, I limit it to 32000 chars and split the string in chunks of 32000 chars and save the chunks in multiple cells.
