• How to get espeak working?

• How to automatically mount a Windows shared folder on every boot up?

  I am able to access Windows' shared folder from Ubuntu 10.10 Nautilus like so: Type into the Location Bar : smb://box/projects Now, I can see the folder in Nautilus, create/read files in it. Also, on desktop I get a folder called "projects on box". But, that folder on the desktop goes away when I reboot. So, I thought that I can automount the Windows' shared projects folder by adding this to my fstab: //box/Projects /home/base/Projects smbfs rw,user,username=jack,password=www222,fmask=666,dmask=777 0 0 (base is my user name on Ubuntu) Now, I get a folder called "Projects" in my home folder after boot up, but it is empty (cannot see the same files that I can see in Nautilus). What's am I doing wrong? Some more detail: This is what I see of the Projects folder when I do ls -l in my home folder: ... drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 2011-01-01 10:22 Projects drwxr-xr-x 2 base base 4096 2011-01-01 09:06 Public ... Note the two "roots". Is that somehow the problem?

• Becoming an expert vs boredom [closed]

  I am a college student, and I love to program, period. I code all kinds of things in different kinds of languages. Although I enjoy programming, I have an extremely hard time sticking to one project for a long time. I attribute this shortcoming to my high level of curiosity, exploring different technologies, languages, libraries, etc. What would be best? Should I settle down more and spend time on becoming an expert in one or two programming fields, or should I be more of a jack of all trades, trying out all kinds of new technologies, languages, programming methods, etc.? I'm guessing that somewhere in the middle would be best. I'm always amazed at how many developers are able to create one or two projects, and develop on them for years. What techniques do you guys employ to help you stay focused on a project?

• USB keyboard hit and miss as to whether it will work on boot-up

  I am new to Ubuntu. Have installed 12.04 on a slave drive while I migrate. Usually booting into Ubuntu goes without a hitch but recently I often find I am unable to use the keyboard, and log-in using the on-screen KB. Sometimes if I remove the USB jack & re-connect it will start working again but not always. I do have an old PS/2 KB which I am using at the moment but.......has anyone any ideas on how to get the USB KB reliably connected? Thanks Dave

• Bad sound quality and headphones not working

  Using Ubuntu 10.10, on a HP Pavilion t3019.es, which has a Realtek ALC880 soundcard. It has 6 rear jack outputs, plus digital audio input and output, plus 3 front jacks (mic, headphones and a blue one which i don't know what's for). The sound on my computer is very low, and when i raise the volume up to 50%, it starts sounding distorted, crackling. Also, the headphones don't work when i plug them (it just keeps on playing through the speakers). I tried to comment the "/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf" file according to the soundcard and jacks in my computer, but none of the lines added worked (naturally, didn't added them at once). I found out that adding "options snd-hda-intel model=generic" to it made the sound better, but it's not as good as in Windows yet. Any ideas? Other than setting the PCM value, didn't work for me. Thanks.

  I followed these instructions and now have a simple JSF 2.0 tag handler: The reason I created this is because I'm curious about whether it would be possible to change the tag created above: <my:hello name="Jack" /> ...to something like this: <my:chart type="pie" xAxis="${some-expression}" yAxis="${some-expression}" width="300" height="500" /> Has anyone tried this? That could be a way to incorporate a JavaFX chart into a Java EE application. That's different to how Adam Bien is doing it in LightFish, but might be a simpler and more reusable way of doing the same thing.

  I just installed Ubuntu 11.10 on my hp pavilion dv6 everything works except the sound. The sound comes from headphones and speakers. I use a normal jack-stick headphone. I want the sound to come only from headphones when my headphone is attached. My ID codec: IDT 92HD75B3X5 Again all what i want is: The sound should not come from the speakers when my headphone is attached :D. I read this question but it didn't answer my problem: Sound comes out of my speakers even when headphones are plugged in I am totally new to Ubuntu so please give step by step instructions.

  I am bit confusing about my goals although whole motivation thing is $$$ but still there is something pushing me to pursue higher studies(being frustrated from boot-licking attitudes of peers and lottery system here in India for promotions,pay hikes and onshore opportunities). I am afraid I do not have any goals.I am software developer mainly in JAVA, but an ECE graduate.I want to work in programming languages. My problem is that I am not even Jack of all trades.I have experience in programming and thats where I am good(self-pro-claimed or atleast people say this treating them as a critics). I have decided to go with the wind and applying for programming languages as my specialization.But I know how to code,write test cases,how Perosnal and commercial IT insurances solution works.What I do not know is how to show that what I will do during my masters.I have no idea about what to showcase, how would my work ex will help me. totally oblivious thoughts... thanks waiting for replies....

  I love PHP and C# languages and i want to be excellent in both. I like to develop PHP applications using MySQL, Nginx, Memcached and so on technologies. I also like ASP.NET MVC stack and think it's great tools. But each technology requires a lot of time to master it. The same is true for C# web stack - there is a huge amount of things to be mastered like Azure, LINQ, Entity Framework ets. Mastering PHP means knowing how it works under the hood. Mastering C# means knowing CLR implementations on a deep level, knowing MSIL etc/ Where to get time for all this? Maybe this is "jack of all trades"? What can you advice?

  I'm studying OOP PHP and have watched two tutorials that implement user login\registration system as an example. But implementation varies. Which way will be more correct one to work with data such as this? Load all data retrieved from database as array into a property called something like _data on class creation and further methods operate with this property Create separate properties for each field retrieved from database, on class creation load all data fields into respective properties and operate with that properties separately? Then let's say I want to create a method that returns a list of all users with their data. Which way is better? Method that returns just an array of userdata like this: Array([0]=>array([id] => 1, [username] => 'John', ...), [1]=>array([id] => 2, [username] => 'Jack', ...), ...) • Can't reset BackInTime snapshot path

  I've been using BackInTime with Ubuntu 12.04. The disk I was saving to is no longer available. BackInTime insists that I bring it back. (It says "Can't find snapshots folder. If it is on a removable drive please plug it and then press OK") No matter what I've tried, I can't seem to get beyond this point. I've even tried removing BackInTime and re-installing it. The problem persists. How can I change the snapshots path without the missing disk? ---Jack

• Android - BroadcastReceiver CONNECTIVITY ACTION

  in my project there's a service that listens for changes in the connectivity. When wifi is switched off to on then it gets called. The problem it's that i'm using a fragment and inside a fragment there's a button with the setonclicklistener(); and onclick(); SOMETIMES when i touch the button then the service receives an intent that the connectivity has changed (the method gets called without any reason...). • Multi-module maven build : different result from parent and from module

  I am migrating an application from ant build to maven 3 build. This app is composed by : A parent project specifying all the modules to build A project generating classes with jaxb and building a jar with them A project building an ejb project 3 projects building war modules 1 project building an ear Here is an extract from my parent pom : <groupId>com.test</groupId> <artifactId>P</artifactId> <packaging>pom</packaging> <version>04.01.00</version> <modules> <module>../PValidationJaxb</module> <-- jar <module>../PValidation</module> <-- ejb <module>../PImport</module> <-- war <module>../PTerminal</module> <-- war <module>../PWebService</module> <-- war <module>../PEAR</module> <-- ear </modules> I have several problems which I think have the same origin, probably a dependency management issue that I cannot figure out : The generated modules are different depending on if I build from the parent pom or a single module. Typically if I build PImport only, the generated war is similar to what I had with my ant build and if I build from the parent pom, my war took 20MB, a lot of dependencies from other modules had been added. Both wars are running well. My project PWebService has unit tests to be executed during the build. It is using mock-ejb which has cglib as dependency. Having a problem of ClassNotFound with this one, I had to exclude it and add a dependency to cglib-nodep (see last pom extract). If I then build only this module, it is working well. But if I build from the parent project, it fails because other dependencies in other modules also had an implicit dependency on cglib. I had to exclude it in every modules pom and add the dependency to cglib-nodep everywhere to make it run. Do I miss something important in my configuration ?   I am testing an application (Spring 2.5, Hibernate 3.5.0 Beta, Atomikos 3.6.2, and Postgreql 8.4.2) with the configuration for the DAO listed below. The problem that I see is that the pool of 10 connections with the dataSource gets exhausted after the 10's transaction. I know 'hibernate.connection.release_mode' has no effect unless the session is obtained with openSession rather then using a contextual session. I am wandering if anyone has found a way to configure the LocalSessionFactoryBean to release connections after any transaction.   Hi, I'm trying the Hello MapView Tutorial at the moment. Whe I launch the program in the emulator, I get a huge number of errors (none of the exceptions seems to be related with lines in my code). The emulator window tells the program "stopped unexpectedly". Can anybody tell me which is the key line in the error output? • How to consume PHP SOAP service using WCF

  I am new in web services so apologize me if I am making some cardinal mistake here, hehe. I have built SOAP service using PHP. Service is SOAP 1.2 compatible, and I have WSDL available. I have enabled sessions, so that I can track login status, etc. I don't need some super security here (ie message-level security), all I need is transport security (HTTPS), since this service will be used infrequently, and performances are not so much of an issue. I am having difficulties making it to work at all. C# throws some unclear exception ("Server returned an invalid SOAP Fault. Please see InnerException for more details.", which in turn says "Unbound prefix used in qualified name 'rpc:ProcedureNotPresent'."), but consuming service using PHP SOAP client behaves as expected (including session and all). • Problem in Apache CXF (Simple Frontend): 'Already connected'

  I am using apache CXF for the first time. I am trying to establish a connection based on the CXF simple front end (Configuration notes) technology. I can't really see what I've done wrong, but I am getting a weird error (see below). I have also posted this question to [email protected], but I haven't received a response yet. Perhaps someone here can help. The service bean that is wrapped here is a Spring / JPA service that does not know anything about the web, I want to use simple frontend to publish it as a web service without having to annotate it with Jax-ws etc. (This works in theory).
