  • Use a different *.config file, depending on IIS application pool .NET version

    - by LeeCambl
I'm looking or a way to programmatically determine which version of the .NET Framework an application pool is using in IIS, at runtime, and for a website application to then use that information to choose which *.config file it should use. Is it possible? I'm not sure where to begin. Quite a broad question, and I'm open to any method of solving the problem, so fire away! Thanks in advance, you lovely Stack Overflowers!

  • When to Multithread and when not to Multithread c++ applications?

    - by Ashwin
I have been in an assumption that multithreading gives a lot of flexibility and power to make efficient programs. But I am wrong. Multithreading is sometimes not desirable as it will create serious impact on the way the actual program behaves. My question? I am not sure of when to use and when not to use multithreads in applications. Please update this thread and give your opinions on multithreading and suggestions on its usage scenarios.

  • What areas of computer science are particularly relevant to mobile development?

    - by MalcomTucker
This isn't a platform specific question - rather I'm interested in the general platform independent areas of computer science that are particularly relevant to mobile applications development. For example, things like compression techniques, distributed synchronisation algorithims etc.. what theoretical concepts have you found relevant, useful or enabling when building mobile apps?

  • replace new lines with comas in shell

    - by mpapis
I want to replace new lines in text with coma or space but do not change the last new line. I know of this question: How to replace new lines with tab characters - but it does produce an tab on end instead of new line. So far I have come with: awk 'NR>1{printf","} {printf $1} END{printf"\n"}' Is there an easier way to do this? This is not an assignment, I am just curious want to level up my scripting.

  • which text writing classes are the most efficient for writing lots of small files?

    - by Robert H
I have to write 300+ files to a server share on a hourly basis. A quick implementation using CreateText takes approximately 1.4 seconds per file. I know there is a better way to do this, but I am unsure which way is actually the quickest/most efficient; hence my question: Which text writing class is the most efficient for writing hundreds of small files ( 336 bytes on average ) to a server share?

  • What components have you built that you are reusing over and over again for your desktop application

    - by Jason
We are building our internal library of components up, and was wondering what everybody has in their library of reusable components for your organization, for desktop applications. Our list currently includes only a couple of components: Logon, Security and User Group functionality System Tray / Service Framework Component for Internet Communications (to handle proxies, security, etc...) Billing What else do you have, that we should add to our list? If you have reusable web components, save your answers... I will open a different question if this one is successful.

  • DisplayFor ignores metadata

    - by Juvaly
For my Contact class, the property EmailAddress is marked with the [DataType(DataType.EmailAddress)] attribute. In my view, using Html.Display("EmailAddress") and Html.DisplayFor(c => c.EmailAddress) yields different results. The former outputs a mailto: link, which is the expected behavior, while the latter simply outputs the email address as plain text. My question is why the different behavior, I expected these two methods to have the same output.

  • Printf example in bash does not create a newline

    - by WolfHumble
Working with printf in a bash script, adding no spaces after "\n" does not create a newline, whereas adding a space creates a newline, e. g.: No space after "\n" NewLine=`printf "\n"` echo -e "Firstline${NewLine}Lastline" Result: FirstlineLastline Space after "\n " NewLine=`printf "\n "` echo -e "Firstline${NewLine}Lastline" Result: Firstline Lastline Question: Why doesn't 1. create the following result: Firstline Lastline I know that this specific issue could have been worked around using other techniques, but I want to focus on why 1. does not work.

  • What do you do when a client ask for a feature which is a really bad idea?

    - by TAG
Recently there was a SO question asking how to implement a feature which blocked users from copying text from a page in their browser. There were many negative comments on this feature, both because it's not practically possible to implement effectively and because it will interfere with the users' experience? What's a programmer to do in these sorts of situations in dealing with their clients or employers?

  • Running 2 threads simultaneously

    - by lamsaitat
In the case of an IM client. I have made 2 separate threads to handle sending packets (by std io) and receiving packets. The question is how to make these 2 threads run simultaneously so that I can keep prompting for input while at the same time be ready to receive packets at any time? I have already tried setting a timer but the data is always lost receiving.

  • PHP: What's the best way to check equality of $_SERVER['HTTP_REFERER'] ?

    - by Hank
I have a PHP script that checks the HTTP Referer. if ($_SERVER['HTTP_REFERER'] == 'http://www.example.com/') {...} However, this seems inherintly unsafe ... because what happens if the user goes to 'http://example.com/' or 'http://www.ExaMple.com' (both of which don't match the equality test). Question: what's a better equality test to ensure that the HTTP Referer is coming from 'example.com' ?
