• Debugging SQL in PGAdmin3 when sql contains variables

  In SQL Server I could copy sql code out of an application and paste it into SSMS, declare & assign vars that exist in the sql and run.. yay great debugging scenario. e.g. (please note I am rust and syntax may be incorrect) declare @x as varchar(10) set @x = 'abc' select * from sometable where somefield = @x I want to do something simular with postgres in pgadmin3 (or another postgres tool, anyy reccomendations?) I realise you can create pgscript, but it doesn't appear to be very good, for example, if I do the equlivent of above, it doesn't put the single quotes around the value in @x, nor does it let me by doubling them up and you don't get a table out after - only text... Currently I have a peice of sql someone has written that has 3 unique varibles in it which are used around 6 times each... So the question is how do other people debug sql this sql EFFICIENTLY, preferably in a simular fashion to my sql server days.

• Difference between Factory Method and Abstract Factory design patterns using C#.Net

  First of all I'll just put both these patterns in context and describe their intent as in the GOF book: Factory Method: Define an interface for creating an object, but let subclasses decide which class to instantiate. Factory Method lets a class defer instantiation to subclasses.   Abstract Factory: Provide an interface for creating families of related or dependent objects without specifying their concrete classes.   Points to note:   Abstract factory pattern adds a layer of abstraction to the factory method pattern. The type of factory is not known to the client at compile time, this information is passed to the client at runtime (How it is passed is again dependent on the system, you may store this information in configuration files and the client can read it on execution). While implementing Abstract factory pattern, the factory classes can have multiple factory methods.   I have this HUGELY irritating problem on Windows 7 (x64). Whenever I click on ANY link (that exists on a Word document, excel or Outlook), I get an alert box with the message: "This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer" I have been scouring my settings and the internet for a solution, but to no avail. Has anybody else encounted this problem? It even happens when I click anchors in word documents i.e. I can't even click on an entry in a Table of Contents to go to the appropriate page - I get this same error then. Is this a Windows 7 thing? Anyway to turn this off?

So I want to refresh my php application once a day with a cron job. But I never wrote a cron job script before. I understand that I have to truncate all the tables/data and add the initial data. • How To Aggregate API Data?

  Hi, I have a system that connects to 2 popular APIs. I need to aggregate the data from each into a unified result that can then be paginated. The scope of the project means that the system could end up supporting 10's of APIs. Each API imposes a max limit of 50 results per request. What is the best way of aggregating this data so that it is reliable i.e ordered, no duplicates etc I am using CakePHP framework on a LAMP environment, however, I think this question relates to all programming languages. My approach so far is to query the search API of each provider and then populate a MySQL table. From this the results are ordered, paginated etc. However, my concern is performance: API communication, parsing, inserting and then reading all in one execution. Am I missing something, does anyone have any other ideas? I'm sure this is a common problem with many alternative solutions. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Paul

• Unable to reverse seemingly simple rails migration - getting "altered_table.column may not be NULL"

  I have a table 'invoices' in my development database (sqlite3) populated with a small amount of test data. I wanted to add a column 'invoice_number' to it and set up a migration like so: class AddInvoiceNumberColumnToInvoices < ActiveRecord::Migration def self.up add_column :invoices, :invoice_number, :integer end def self.down remove_column :invoices, :invoice_number end end I ran rake db:migrate and it seemed to migrate just fine. However, when I tried to access this column through ActiveRecord it didn't seem to be there. I decided to undo this migration and try again (not sure what I was going to try but I thought I'd start by undoing it) with rake db:migrate VERSION='whatever_the_migration_before_this_one_was_called'. This failed with the error message == AddInvoiceNumberColumnToInvoices: reverting =============================== -- remove_column(:invoices, :invoice_number) rake aborted! An error has occurred, this and all later migrations canceled: altered_invoices.invoice_number may not be NULL I can't find any documentation of this error. Is anyone able to explain what I have done wrong, and more importantly how I can fix this?

• NamedParameterJdbcTemplate jconnect decimal issue

  I am using NamedParameterJdbcTemplate to insert data into a table. (Spring 2.5.3/Java 1.6) I am using jconnect driver to connect to sybase jdbc:sybase:Tds:<Server>:<Port>. For some reason the decimal values the decimal part is truncated. With the same code if I use jtds driver (jdbc:jtds:sybase://<Servername>:<Port>) its working fine. I cannot use jtds as jconn is being used by other code. In Java objects, field is defined as double. In database, field is defined as float (numeric with precision does not work). Any help is appreciated.

• Using a UIPickerView to make a CoreData Relationship

  Okay, so I have a fairly simple application set up. I have two different CoreData Entities, Games and Platforms, each have one attribute: name, and they have a one-to-many relationship between them. Platforms are populated on the first launch of the application, and will never change as a result of user input. I'm working on my Add view to let the user add new games to their personal database, and each game should select from a platform. The add view itself is a grouped table view with static custom cells. Tapping the platform cell should advance the user to another view to select the platform. My thought is that UIPickerView seems like a logical choice for the control, since the Platform list is static, but I'm not sure how to use it with CoreData. Even if I construct a fetch request to get the Platform objects and extract the strings out, how do I go about linking the new Game object to the original Platform object?

  If invoices can be voided, should they be used as quotations? I have an Invoices tables that is created from inventory associated with a Job. I could have a Quotes table as a halfway-house between inventory and invoices, but it feels like I would have duplicate data structures and logic just to handle an "Is this a quote?" bit. From a business perspective, quotes are different from invoices: a quote is sent prior to an undertaking and an invoice is sent once it is complete and payment is due, but how to represent this in my repository and model. I know you can separately write another query to just return the primary key ids which satisfy the condition. But, Is there any other way to do that in the same query ? probably rewrite the query in some way ? or... any suggestion ?

  I'm running an IRC Bot (Bot::BasicBot) which has two child processes running File::Tail but when exiting, they don't terminate. So I'm killling them using Proc::ProcessTable like this before exiting: my $parent=$$; my $proc_table=Proc::ProcessTable->new(); for my $proc (@{$proc_table->table()}) { kill(15, $proc->pid) if ($proc->ppid == $parent); } It works but I get this warning: 14045: !!! Child process PID:14047 reaped: 14045: !!! Child process PID:14048 reaped: 14045: !!! Your program may not be using sig_child() to reap processes. 14045: !!! In extreme cases, your program can force a system reboot 14045: !!! if this resource leakage is not corrected. What else can I do to kill child processes? The forked process is created using the forkit method in Bot::BasicBot.

  I'm trying to use SQL Server Profiler (2005) to track down some application performance problems. One of the calls being made is to a table-valued user-defined function. This function wraps a select that joins several tables together. In SQL Server Profiler, the call to the UDF is logged. However, the select that underlies the UDF isn't being logged at all. Because of this, I'm not getting useful data on which tables & indexes are being hit. I'd like to feed this info into the Database Tuning Advisor for some indexing advice. Is there any way (short of unwrapping the queries themselves) to log the tables called by UDFs in Profiler?

• How do you get the glyph for a character encoded as '&#333;' from a utf-8 encoded database field usi

  I have a MySQL database table with a collation of 'utf8_general_ci' and the value in the field is: x & #299; bán yá wén (without the spaces). When this is converted (for example by StackOverflow's editor) it looks like this: xī bán yá wén where the second character looks like a lower case i with a bar over the top. In PHP, what function converts the & #299 ; entity into the ī character? I've tried using html_entity_decode($str,ENT_COMPAT,'UTF-8'), however I get characters like the following: yÄ«n wén or zhÅ•ng wén I'm pretty sure there's something I don't understand about the decoding, which is why I'm using the wrong function. Can anyone shed some light on how to get the single character glyph that's represented by the entity & #299 and similar high-number characters above 255? Many thanks, AE

Should it be used to define a table, or could I build an SQL with the ordering within the formula (without hindering performance)? I am also wondering, if it is possible to use multiple ordering algorithms in different occasions, without incurring into performance problems. I'm using Django and PostgreSQL. Help would be much appreciated! ^^

  Hi All, I'm trying to work out a query that self join itself on a table using the eventnumber. I've never done a self join before. What i'm trying to query is when a client has started off in a city which is chester to see what city they moved to. But I dont want to be able to see if they started off in another city. I would also like be only see the move once (So i'd only like to see if they went from chester to london rather then chester to london to wales) The StartTimeDate is the same EndDateTime if they moved to another city.   Hi, I have a time series based mining model in SQL 2005 Analysis Serveries. I understand in 2008 you can do what if analysis by using EXTEND_MODEL_CASES with a Natural Prediction Join. I'm looking for a workaround or some method of doing the same thing but with 2005. My time series has 3 inputs, and one predict_only. I'd like to use the prediction function to see what types of prediction it makes for 6-12 time intervals in the future with inputs in a separate table. Is there any way to do this or something similar? Thanks
