  • How can I start a TCP server in the background during a Perl unit test?

    I am trying to write a unit test for a client server application. To test the client, in my unit test, I want to first start my tcp server (which itself is another perl file). I tried to start the TCP server by forking: if (! fork()) { system ("$^X server.pl") == 0 or die "couldn't start server" } So when I call make test after perl Makefile.PL, this test starts and I can see the server starting but after that the unit test just hangs there. So I guess I need to start this server in background and I tried the & at the end to force it to start in background and then test to continue. But, I still couldn't succeed. What am I doing wrong?     My ASP.NET MVC app needs to run a set of tasks at startup and in the background at a regular interval. I have implemented each task as a controller action and listed the app-relative path to the action in the database. I implemented a TaskRunner process that gets the urls from the database and requests each one at a regular interval using WebRequest.Create, but this throws a UriFormatException. I cannot use this answer or any code that plucks values from HttpContext.Current.Request without getting an HttpException with the message "Request is not available in this context". The Request object is not available because my code uses System.Threading.Timer to do background processing, as recommended here. Here are my questions: Is there really no way to make local web requests within an ASP.NET web app? Is there really no way to dynamically ascertain the root path to the web app even using static dependencies in ASP.NET? I was trying to avoid storing the app's root path in the database (as FogBugz does with its "Maintenance Path"), but is this best option?

  • Can a GPO Startup Script starts a background process and exit immediately?

    I have Googled, and not yet found an answer. Scenario: One of my GPOs have a Startup Script that takes a long time to finish. For some reasons, we have to run the scripts synchronously. Naturally, this causes slow startup time (sometimes as long as 15 minutes!) before the Logon screen appears. After profiling and analyzing the perpetrator script, I conclusively determined that the step where it's taking a long time to finish will not affect the result of the succesive GPOs. In other words, that particular step (and all steps afterwards) can run in the background. My Question: Is it possible for the Startup Script to just 'trigger' another script/program that will run to completion even when the Startup Script exits? That is, the "child processes" of the Startup Script continues to live even when the Startup Script's process ends? Additional Info: The Domain Controllers are 2008 and 2008 R2's. The workstations are Windows XP.

    I am using the cover property to create a background image that fills the background and resizes with the browser. But I run into one issue, the page has a lot of content and no scroll bars appear for me to scroll down!     I can't seem to set a default background color for all of my windows in my application. Does anyone know how to do this? Inside of SomeTheme.xaml I am trying to set a default color for all of my windows like this. <Style TargetType="{x:Type Window}"> <Setter Property="Background" Value="{DynamicResource MainColor}" /> </Style> This syntax works on a type of Button, but is completely ignored for Window. What am I doing wrong? Is there something special I have to do for a Window type.

  • What's causing this background-image to display "incorrectly" in Opera and Firefox?

    I know this is something I'm probably doing wrong, so please don't incinerate me for the thread title. I'm trying to put together a small personal website using HTML 5/CSS3. I've checked with the w3c validator and the site and CSS file fully conform according to the validator (However the validator has a warning attached that it might not be perfect). I'm not sure how to explain it without a picture, so here's a comparison of Chrome/Opera/Firefox: So, you can sorta see how in Chrome the background image is in one non-repeating piece, whereas in Opera/Firefox the image has, oddly, been broken up and placed slightly differently. I'm confident this is due to an error on my part, but I've had no luck at all figuring out why the image is being mangled in Opera and Firefox. I would like to make my app have a background image and the user can select next and previous buttons to scroll through some full screen images, setting them as the background image as they scroll. I know how to do this in java, but cant seem to do it for this app. How or what code is linked to a next button to grab the next image in the array and reverse for the back button? Then that needs to be displayed obviously. I have used a layered architecture with a MVC style approach but cant seem to put it together with Objective-C. Would the buttons call the appropriate methods of the so called delegates, which the delegates handle fetching and returning the Images?     I'm using a JPanel to have a toolbar on my background, but I don't like the look of it. Actually, there's basically no look, no background and the buttons are flat when the mouse is not over them. This is on Windows. How can I have a better look for this? Something that would fit better on Windows? Maybe something like the ToolStrip in Visual Studio? Or maybe something better that would look much better depending on the OS version (Windows, Mac, Linux)? Suggestions?

    I am using https://helixtoolkit.codeplex.com/ as a 3D framework. I want to move black mesh relative to the green mesh as shown in the attached image below. I want to make green mesh parent to the black mesh as the change in scale of the green mesh also will result in motion of the black mesh. It could be partial parenting or may be more. I need 3D rotation and 3D transition + transition along green mesh's length axis for the black mesh relative to the green mesh itself. Suppose a variable green_mesh_scale causing scale for the green mesh along its length axis. The black mesh will use that variable in order to move along green mesh's length axis. How to go about it. I've done as follows: GeometryModel3D GreenMesh, BlackMesh; ... double green_mesh_scale = e.NewValue; Transform3DGroup forGreen = new Transform3DGroup(); Transform3DGroup forBlack = new Transform3DGroup(); forGreen.Children.Add(new ScaleTransform3D(new Vector3D(1, green_mesh_scale , 1))); // ... transforms for rotation n transition GreenMesh.Transform = forGreen ; forBlack = forGreen; forBlack.Children.Add(new TranslateTransform3D(new Vector3D(0, green_mesh_scale, 0))); BlackMesh.Transform = forBlack; The problem with this is the scale transform will also be applied to the black mesh. I think i just need to avoid the scale part. I tried keeping all the transforms but scale, on another Transform3DGroup variable but that also not behaving as expected.
