CSS Design question, I've got myself completely turned around.

Okay, I have a couple of other questions out there, but I think I'd better just ask from the beginning how you CSS experts would do this. Client's page is split into 2 rows -- header has some info, some aligned to left of page, some to right, some in the middle. This is currently done using a table. I'm fine with leaving this alone or changing it. My real question is that I need a page layout to handle the following: 2 columns - column on left is 200px, but can be "close" down to to 10px (not a slider, it's either 200 or 10 px). The column on the right needs to be as big as it needs to be -- which might be larger than the width of the page. When left column is "closed" then the right column slides over of course. Again, this right column might be 300px or it might be 4000 pixels (it's a reporting interface). Now, to add another wrinkle, SOME pages have 3 columns. The first 2 columns are each exactly 200px, and both can be "closed" down to 10 px each. But, the user may not close both columns, maybe just 1. Or none. Or both. The third column needs to act just like I described above, being able to be larger than the page width, and sliding over to take advantage of any of the "closed" left columns. Whew! I'm pretty confused as to how to go about this, as either I get it right but I can't scroll over to the right at all (overflow: hidden) and information is lost, or the right column jumps down below the left 2 columns and just looks plain stupid. My minimum browser requirements are IE8, FF3.5, Chrome and Safari (latest versions of all). Any and all pointers are gladly accepted.

Changing the direction of a Combo box dropdown in SWT

Hi, I'm building an Eclipse plugin in SWT, and I have the following problem: one of my fields is a combo box, and in some cases it may have fairly long items as selection options. My plugin runs on the right side of the screen, so when you go to use the combo-box, the right side of the combo box is cut off. So, my question is: is there any way to change the dropdown's alignment relative to the combo control? It seems to be permanently left-aligned... and I'm pretty sure you can change the direction in Swing (though the only place I've seen it done is in the Substance UI demo. The Combo Box tab has boxes with North, South East, and West flyout directions... for my application, I need something like the West flyout) Note: Setting actual text limits is a last-case-scenario option; it would be quite a bit of guesswork to set the text limit dynamically (since the widget's view can be resized). Here's a picture (sorry, I can only have one link and no images :( ... I need some more rep :p) Left side of the line: Proper width - the view is the wide enough for the combo dropdown to display all the text; you can see the scrollbars on the right side. Right side of the line: Too small - Here, the view has been resized, and the combo dropdown scrollbar (as well as some of the text) is cut off by the right side of the screen. I always have more screen space available to the left (since this is always on the right hand side of the screen), but the combo dropdown always appears to the lower right. Code Golf: Find the possible ways on a numpad

I was bored today at school and so I tried to amuse myself using my calculator and a "game" I've invented which isn't really a game but keeps the boringness away. Also some time has passed since the last real code-golf here, so I decided to create this one. Imagine a simplified numpad like you know it from your phone (I'll leave the 0 out for this code-golf as it kinda destroys all the fun) 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 Now the rules of the game were always: At the end every digit must have been visited exactly once You can start at any digit you want You can always move one digit up, down, left or right. You can't move diagonally! There a quite a lot of possible ways (or not; I haven't found out yet), here some trivial examples: > > v v < < > > | The output of the golf-program should look something like the above, I'll try to explain: Symbols: Go right < Go left ^ Go up v Go down | End of the way Example solutions: (Program output can either be the numbers pressed in the right order from beginning point to end, or an (ASCII) picture like above) 147852369 569874123 523698741 So if we speak out the example above it would be: Start at 1, move right to 2, move right to 3, go down to 6, go left to 5, go left to 4, go down to 7, go right to 8 then go right to 9 and we are finished! Now there are many different ways possible: You could as well start at 5 and go around it in a circle. So the task would be: Write a program that can compute (using brute-force or whatever) the possible solutions for the numpad problem described above. java threads don't see shared boolean changes

Force dual-mono audio (L+L or R+R) in Youtube video playback for one-channel audio movies

Occasionally, I find Youtube videos that have only one audio channel (only left or only right); example video (left channel only). This is quite annoying, especially with headphones on, as I hear sound in one ear, and no sound in the other. So, I want to be able to easily force dual mono (Left+Left or Right+Right) when I find that kind of video, and switch to normal stereo after I finish watching it. I have my headphones plugged well / I don't create audio/video - I want it for real-time playback only, In Windows audio config, setting balance 100% to Left / Right doesn't help (I have either still only left when moved to left, and no sound at all when moved to right), I've checked all the configurations in Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Audio > Sound Playback > Advanced like suggested in this post, in conjunction with moving balance left/right, and it doesn't seem to have any impact on actual sound I hear in headphones, No need to mix L with R, I just want L+L or R+R, I prefer software solutions to buying a stereo-to-mono adapter, Free solutions please, no $$$ ones, neither trials etc., In Control Panel > Realtek HD Sound Effect Manager I can turn on various mumbo-jumbo effects like: Concert Hall / Hangar / Bathroom / whatever environment (and in fact it makes the sound appear in two ears, but well, it's ridiculous to do this;), but there is no Dual Mono option. Finally, I know I can force L+L or R+R in VLC Player which supports Youtube (well, a little hack is needed, because Youtube internals change from time to time) but it is not very convenient to launch VLC just to play Youtube video - I want to keep it in the browser, I use Firefox generally (but well, if I don't find easier way, I will launch it in VLC).

Mouse click-focus wanders in vmPlayer 3.0 dual-monitor

Previously, a WinXPSP3 session running on a WinXPSP3 host computer ran perfectly fine in a dual monitor setup. No issues with vmPlayer 2.x. BEFORE updating to vmPlayer 3, the following problem cropped up. When clicking in a single monitor, you would get exactly what you expected. However, when the display was stretched across two monitors, the clicking would be to the left of the mouse cursor. The farther RIGHT you were, the farther left the click would occur. In other words, if you clicked on the system menu of a window in the upper left of a window on the left monitor, you would get the system menu. Move half a screen to your right and the click would be on an item about a quarter of the way over, rather than where you were clicking. And by going all the way to the far right of the right monitor, you could bring up a right-click menu on the far right of the LEFT monitor. I Hope I have described this properly. It's confusing, even in words. In single monitor mode, everything works perfectly fine. If, instead of using either UltraMon or DisplayFusion, you run a single desktop across both monitors (3200x1600), there are no mousing issues. Unfortunately, having two 1600x1200 monitors, that depth of 1600 makes that hack less than useable. My graphic card won't offer anything resembling 3200x1200. vmPlayer 3.0 did not alleviate the situation. The microsoft mouse drivers are up to date and so are the nVidia card drivers. Any ideas?

Hi guys, i try and i try to find the bug in this script but i can't . Maybe some of you can give me a hint... Problem. PHP script keeps doing mmap/munmap

Hello, My PHP script contains a loop, which does nothing much more than echoing and dereferencing pointers (like in $tab[$othertab[$i]]- stuff). It was working great until yesterday, when this script starting being VERY slow (like 50 times slower than before). After using strace, i figured out that 90% of the time, the script does mmap/munmap. how do I make my submenu position dynamic based on the distance to the edge of the window?

I'm trying to write a jQuery script that will find the distance to the right edge of the browser window from my css class element and then position the child submenu dropdowns to the right or left depending on the available space to the right. Also it needs to revert to the default settings on hoverout. I tried to make a moving img, and it works partially. If I press the right, up or down button, it moves right, up or down. But, if I press the left button, it jumps very fast very far to the right, and then back to the left and doesn't stop moving (I believe. I said it was fast). Parallelism in .NET – Part 11, Divide and Conquer via Parallel.Invoke

Many algorithms are easily written to work via recursion. For example, most data-oriented tasks where a tree of data must be processed are much more easily handled by starting at the root, and recursively “walking” the tree. Some algorithms work this way on flat data structures, such as arrays, as well. This is a form of divide and conquer: an algorithm design which is based around breaking up a set of work recursively, “dividing” the total work in each recursive step, and “conquering” the work when the remaining work is small enough to be solved easily. Recursive algorithms, especially ones based on a form of divide and conquer, are often a very good candidate for parallelization. This is apparent from a common sense standpoint. Since we’re dividing up the total work in the algorithm, we have an obvious, built-in partitioning scheme. Once partitioned, the data can be worked upon independently, so there is good, clean isolation of data. Implementing this type of algorithm is fairly simple. The Parallel class in .NET 4 includes a method suited for this type of operation: Parallel.Invoke. This method works by taking any number of delegates defined as an Action, and operating them all in parallel. By allowing any number of delegates to be executed directly, concurrently, the Parallel.Invoke method provides us an easy way to parallelize any algorithm based on divide and conquer. We can divide our work in each step, and execute each task in parallel, recursively. For example, suppose we wanted to implement our own quicksort routine. The quicksort algorithm can be designed based on divide and conquer. In each iteration, we pick a pivot point, and use that to partition the total array. We swap the elements around the pivot, then recursively sort the lists on each side of the pivot. Running this against the built-in Array.Sort routine shows that we get the exact same answers (although the framework’s sort routine is slightly faster). On my system, for example, I can use framework’s sort to sort ten million random doubles in about 7.3s, and this implementation takes about 9.3s on average. Looking at this routine, though, there is a clear opportunity to parallelize. At the end of QuickSortInternal, we recursively call into QuickSortInternal with each partition of the array after the pivot is chosen. This can be rewritten to use Parallel.Invoke by simply changing it to: // Code above is unchanged... When executing, we now see the CPU usage across all cores spike while it executes. However, there is a significant problem here – by parallelizing this routine, we took it from an execution time of 9.3s to an execution time of approximately 14 seconds! We’re using more resources as seen in the CPU usage, but the overall result is a dramatic slowdown in overall processing time. This occurs because parallelization adds overhead. Each time we split this array, we spawn two new tasks to parallelize this algorithm! This is far, far too many tasks for our cores to operate upon at a single time. In effect, we’re “over-parallelizing” this routine. This is a common problem when working with divide and conquer algorithms, and leads to an important observation: When parallelizing a recursive routine, take special care not to add more tasks than necessary to fully utilize your system. This can be done with a few different approaches, in this case. Typically, the way to handle this is to stop parallelizing the routine at a certain point, and revert back to the serial approach. Since the first few recursions will all still be parallelized, our “deeper” recursive tasks will be running in parallel, and can take full advantage of the machine. This also dramatically reduces the overhead added by parallelizing, since we’re only adding overhead for the first few recursive calls. There are two basic approaches we can take here. The first approach would be to look at the total work size, and if it’s smaller than a specific threshold, revert to our serial implementation. In this case, we could just check right-left, and if it’s under a threshold, call the methods directly instead of using Parallel.Invoke. The second approach is to track how “deep” in the “tree” we are currently at, and if we are below some number of levels, stop parallelizing. This approach is a more general-purpose approach, since it works on routines which parse trees as well as routines working off of a single array, but may not work as well if a poor partitioning strategy is chosen or the tree is not balanced evenly. This can be written very easily. If we pass a maxDepth parameter into our internal routine, we can restrict the amount of times we parallelize by changing the recursive call to: // Code above is unchanged... SwapElements(array, left, last); if (maxDepth < 1) { QuickSortInternal(array, left, last - 1, maxDepth); QuickSortInternal(array, last + 1, right, maxDepth); } else { --maxDepth; Parallel.Invoke( () => QuickSortInternal(array, left, last - 1, maxDepth), () => QuickSortInternal(array, last + 1, right, maxDepth)); } We no longer allow this to parallelize indefinitely – only to a specific depth, at which time we revert to a serial implementation. By starting the routine with a maxDepth equal to Environment.ProcessorCount, we can restrict the total amount of parallel operations significantly, but still provide adequate work for each processing core. With this final change, my timings are much better. On average, I get the following timings: Framework via Array.Sort: 7.3 seconds Serial Quicksort Implementation: 9.3 seconds Naive Parallel Implementation: 14 seconds Parallel Implementation Restricting Depth: 4.7 seconds Finally, we are now faster than the framework’s Array.Sort implementation.
