    I know why the following code doesn't compile: public class Main { public static void main(String args[]) { main((null)); // this is fine! (main(null)); // this is NOT! } } What I'm wondering is why my compiler (javac 1.6.0_17, Windows version) is complaining "The left hand side of an assignment must be a variable". I'd expect something like "Don't put parentheses around a method invokation, dummy!", instead. So why is the compiler making a totally unhelpful complaint about something that is blatantly irrelevant? Is this the result of an ambiguity in the grammar? A bug in the compiler? If it's the former, could you design a language such that a compiler would never be so off-base about a syntax error like this?

  • Overlay only draws between first 2 points in Android

    Hi, I am experiencing an unusual error using ItemizedOverlay in Android. I am creating a GPS tracking device that plots a route between waypoints stored in a database.   • JAXB marshals XML differently to OutputStream vs. StringWriter

    I apologize if this has been answered, but the search terms I have been using (i.e. JAXB @XmlAttribute condensed or JAXB XML marshal to String different results) aren't coming up with anything. I am using JAXB to un/marshal objects annotated with @XmlElement and @XmlAttribute annotations. I have a formatter class which provides two methods -- one wraps the marshal method and accepts the object to marshal and an OutputStream, the other just accepts the object and returns the XML output as a String. Unfortunately, these methods do not provide the same output for the same objects. When marshaling to a file, simple object fields internally marked with @XmlAttribute are printed as: <element value="VALUE"></element> while when marshaling to a String, they are: <element value="VALUE"/> I would prefer the second format for both cases, but I am curious as to how to control the difference, and would settle for them being the same regardless. I even created one static marshaller that both methods use to eliminate different instance values.     Hi I have created jdbc mysql connection. my program works fine for simple execution of query. But if i run the same program for more than 10 hour and execute query then i receives the following mysql exception. I have not used close() method anywhere. i created database connection and opened it forever and always execute query. there is no where that i explicitly mentioned timeout for connection. i am unable to identify the problem com.mysql.jdbc.exceptions.jdbc4.MySQLNonTransientConnectionException: Connection.close() has already been called. There is the method extFilter = FileNameExtensionFilter(description, extensions); that I can then use by writing fileChooser.setFileFilter(extFilter); however, as you can see, this only supports one option in the drop-down list. How do I add more?

  • Spring maven libraries

    I would like to know why some of the libraries are not released during a normal release cycle. For example, from http://repo2.maven.org/maven2/org/springframework/ while spring-core have 3.0.3-RELEASE, spring-remoting and spring-jmx were released only in 2.0.8. Can someone tell me what this would mean? I agree that if there are no changes in the component say spring-jmx then they don't have to release it, but since 90% of the world uses Maven for dependency management can they not just re-release the same libs (of spring-remoting and spring-jmx?) I ask this because I declare my deps like, <dependency> <groupId>org.springframework</groupId> <artifactId>spring-core</artifactId> <version>${spring.version}</version> </dependency> <dependency> <groupId>org.springframework</groupId> <artifactId>spring-remoting</artifactId> <version>${spring.version}</version> </dependency> and I would prefer supplying one spring.version instead of keeping version numbers upto date for all components? The four libraries of interest to me are spring-dao, spring-support, spring-jmx, spring-remoting

The question is theoretical or conceptual: Is there any way to tell an entity manager to load an entity from the DB rather than from it's cache? The problematic scenario: EM1.persist(Entity1) EM2.merge(Entity1) EM1.find(Entity1) <--- Entity1 is the cached version rather than the merged one.. Any elegant way to do it? I really don't want to call em.refresh(entity).

  • thread reaches end but isn't removed

    I create a bunch of threads to do some processing: new Thread("upd-" + id){ @Override public void run(){ try{ doSomething(); } catch (Throwable e){ LOG.error("error", e); } finally{ LOG.debug("thread death"); } } }.start(); I know i should be using a threadPool but i need to understand the following problem before i change it: I'm using eclipse's debugger and looking at the threads in the debug pane which lists active threads. Many of them complete as you would expect, and are removed from the debug pane, however some seem to stay in the list of active threads even though the log shows the "thread death" entry for these. When i attempt to debug these threads, they either do not pause for debugging or show an error dialog: "A timeout occurred while retrieving stack frames for thread: upd-...". there is some synchronization going on within the doSomething() call but i'm fairly sure it's ok and since the "thread death" log is being called i'm assuming these threads aren't deadlocked in that method. i don't do any Thread.join()s, however i do call a third party API but doubt they do either. Can anyone think of another reason these threads are lingering? Thanks. EDIT: I created this test to check the Garbage Collection theory: Thread thread = new Thread("!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!") { @Override public void run() { System.out.println("running"); ThreadUs.sleepQuiet(5000); System.out.println("finished"); // <-- thread removed from list here } }; thread.start(); ThreadUs.sleepQuiet(10000); System.out.println(thread.isAlive()); // <-- thread already removed from list but hasn't been GC'd ThreadUs.sleepQuiet(10000); this proves that it is nothing to do with garbage collection as eclipse removes the thread from the thread list as soon as it completes and isn't waiting for the object to be de-referenced/GC'd.

Any idea?

    Hi all Can any one help me to get logged in user's info like email id,name,city etc. with the help of Facebook uId . " Long uid = apiClient.getLoggedInUser ();" Users_getInfo is not useful. It returns No of users connected to _User & according that there info gets. If user login successfully using fb connect, Facebook gives us uid. However, I need to match the logged in user with our member's account If that member is not present in DB then want to register him and I'm trying to do that with e-mail(hashed) address and other info.
