  • Is it possible to give a python dict an initial capacity (and is it usefull)

    I am filling a python dict with around 10,000,000 items. My understanding of dict (or hashtables) is that when too much elements get in them, the need to resize, an operation that cost quite some time. Is there a way to say to a python dict that you will be storing at least n items in it, so that it can allocate memory from the start? Or will this optimization not do any good to my running speed? (And no, I have not checked that the slowness of my small script is because of this, I actually wouldn't now how to do that. This is however something I would do in Java, set the initial capacity of the HashSet right)

    updates: I think/ suspect the imageIO is not thread safe. shared by all threads. the read() call might use resources that are also shared. Thus it will give the performance of a single thread no matter how many threads used. ? if its correct . what is the solution (in practical code) Single request and response model at one time do not utilizes full network/internet bandwidth, thus resulting in low performance. (benchmark is of half speed utilization or even lower) This is to make a video out of an IP cam that gives a new image on each request. http://149.5.43.10:8001/snapshot.jpg It makes a delay of 3 - 8 seconds no matter what I do. Changed thread no. and thread time intervals, debugged the code by System.out.println statements to see if threads work. All seems normal. Any help? Please show some practical code. You may modify mine.   • Git Use Remote Source Durring Push

    I have a local git repository a "central" repo at github. I'm working on a part of a project, while a friend is working on a related piece that is its entirely seperate repo, is it possible for me to simply link directly to my friends repo? For example, the app is called widgets. I have all my code in widgets/app/mycode and my friend is writing code that goes into widgets/plugins/awesome/hiscode. I want to be able to always have http://github.com/mycode/widgets/plugins/hiscode to be a direct link or clone to http://github.com/hiscode/awesome ? It could be possible i'm missing something basic in my question or knowledge of git, if so please ask, and i'll be happy to try to fill in the blanks. I am deploying to my production site via capistrano, so maybe a script of some kind may be easier?? I don't know (that's why i'm posting)!!

  • Best tools to parse reports

    I have a report that I need to parse/scrape for loading into an alternate or query-able data store. The report looks like something akin to: this. My gut is that PERL would do a decent job, but I have several different permutations of the report and I don't really want to make a script around each form. This report is a pretty stock type report, and I have seen where Monarch Pro can parse these types of reports, but I have had a difficult time finding alternatives to how these could be parsed since I'm looking to do this working primarily in a Linux environment. Any suggestions?

    I am using Selenium WebDriver and the Python bindings to automate some monotonous WordPress tasks, and it has been pretty straightforward up until this point. I am trying to select a checkbox, but the only way that I can identify it is by the text following it. Here is the relevant portion of HTML: <li id="product_cat-52"> <label class="selectit"> <input value="52" type="checkbox" name="tax_input[product_cat][]" id="in-product_cat-52"> polishpottery </label> </li> The only information that I have in my script to identify this checkbox is the string "polishpottery". Is there any way to select that checkbox knowing only the text that follows?

  • PHP imap_search not detecting all messages in gmail inbox

    When I run a very simple imap_search on my GMail inbox, the search returns less messages than it should. But, I've got 100 messages in my inbox, some in conversations, some forwarded from another account (SquirrelMail, FWIW). Can anyone duplicate these results, and/or tell me what's going on?     I'm dealing with blobs of up to - I estimate - about 100 kilo bytes in size. The data is compressed already. Storage engine: InnoDB on MySQL 5.1 Frontend: PHP (Symfony with Propel ORM) Some questions: I've read somewhere that it's not good to update blobs, because it leads to reallocation, fragmentation, and thus bad performance. Is that true? Any reference on this? Initially the blobs get constructed by appending data chunks. Each chunk is up to 16 kilo bytes in size. Is it more efficient to use a separate chunk table instead, for example with fields as below? parent_id, position, chunk Then, to get the entire blob, one would do something like: SELECT GROUP_CONCAT(chunk ORDER BY position) FROM chunks WHERE parent_id = 187 The result would be used in a PHP script. Is there any difference between the types of blobs, aside from the size needed for meta data, which should be negligible.

Thus the SWF is responsible for the creative layout of the screen the flash player. It is the results of this actions script, images, and textual data that need to be converted to a video format. Is anyone familiar with an online service that would be able to convert such .swf files that our site generates to a video format (say .avi, .mpeg, .mov). Or an application?     For instance, I suppose I have a directory that contains the following folders foo_bar baz What I would like to have is a bash command that will make a symlink foo-bar to foo_bar so it would look like this: foo-bar foo_bar baz I'm pretty sure I can write a Python script to do this, but I'm curious if there's a way to do this with bash. Here's where I'm stuck: ls -1 | grep _ | xargs -I {} ln -s {} `{} | sed 's/_/-/'` What I'm trying to do is run the command ln -s with the first argument being the directory name and the second argument being that name passed through sed s/_/-/. Is there another way to do this?

  • Why is Harvest being purchased at all?

    Does your work environment use Harvest SCM? I've used this now at two different locations and find it appalling. In one situation I wrote a conversion script so I could use CVS locally and then daily import changes to the Harvest system while I was sleeping. The corp was fanatic about using Harvest, despite 80% of the programmers crying for something different. It was needlessly complicated, slow and heavy. It is now a job requirement for me that Harvest is not in use where I work. Has anyone else used Harvest before? What's your experience? As bad as mine? Did you employ other, different workarounds? Why is this product still purchased today?

  • Is there a function that can read a php function post-parsing?

    I've got a php file echoing hashes from a MySQL database. This is necessary for a remote program I'm using, but at the same time I need my other php script opening and checking it for specified strings POST parsing. If it checks for the string pre-parsing, it'll just get the MySQL query rather than the strings to look for. I'm not sure if any functions do this. Does fopen() read the file prior to parsing? or file_get_contents()? If so, is there a function that'll read the file after the php and mysql code runs? The file with the hashes query and echo is in the same directory as the php file reading it, if that makes a difference. Perhaps fopen reads it post-parse, and I've done something wrong, but at first I was storing the hashes directly in the file, and it was working fine. After I changed it to echo the contents of the MySQL table, it bugged out.

  • Qt on Mac: where to find "configure"

    hi, I am very new to Mac. I downloaded QT SDK Mac Open source (http://get.qt.nokia.com/qtsdk/qt-sdk-mac-opensource-2010.02.dmg) and installed the Package. I can run qmake, build samples and run demos, but I cannot run configure (in order to build the Qt libraries statically). It says: -bash: No such file or directory. Documentation says I should run this in the "Qt root folder", but what is this folder in Mac? I looked for it in /usr/bin, /usr/local/Qt4.6, /Developer/Tools/Qt. Anyway, what is "configure" on Mac. is it an executable or a script? Thanks a lot

  • On Solaris, what is the difference between cut and gcut?

    I recently came across this crazy script bug on one of my Solaris machines.   • How can I create a custom cleanup mode for git?

    Git's default cleanup of strip removes all lines starting with a # character. Unfortunately, the Trac engine's wiki formatter uses hashes in the beginning of a code block to denote the syntax type. Additionally any code added verbatim might include hashes as they are a common comment prefix; Perl comes to mind. In the following example the comments all get destroyed by git's cleanup mode. Example: {{{ #!/usr/bin/perl use strict; # say hi to the user. print "hello world\n"; }}} I'd like to use a custom filter that removes all lines beginning with a hash from the bottom of the file upwards. Leaving those lines that being with a hash that are embedded in the commit message I wrote alone. Where or how can I specify this in git? Note, creating a sed or perl script to perform the operation is not a problem, just knowing where to hook it into git is the question.

  • emacs/Python: running python-shell in line buffered vs. block buffered mode

    Hi all - In a related question and answer here, someone hypothesized that python-shell within emacs(23.2) was block-buffered instead of line-buffered. The recommended fix was to add sys.stdout.flush() to the spot in my script where I want stdio to flush its contents to the python-shell. Is there someway to trick python-shell (running in emacs 23.2 on Windows, not Linux) into either a) thinking it's attached to a TTY or b) using line-buffered instead of block-buffered mode? I don't see why I'd be able to do this in IDLE but not emacs. I'd rather customize emacs than add sys.stdout.flush() throughout my scripts. Call me lazy :-). Thanks, Mike

I have an R script that generates several plots, and I want to view all the plots on screen at once (in seperate windows), but I can't work out how to open multiple graphics windows. I'm using ggplot2, but I feel this is a more basic problem, so I'm just using base grapics for this simple example x<-c(1:10) y<-sin(x) z<-cos(x) dev.new() plot(y=y,x=x) dev.off() dev.new() plot(x=x,y=z) But this doesn't work. I'm on Windows if this matters (Windows + Eclipse + StatEt)

  • How can I test whether a csv file is currently open and being written to - the file, not a file hand

    I've seen a few questions/answers here that deal with this, but none really give me an answer/solution. I've got a Clipper system writing csv files to a Windows directory. I have a perl script running on a Linux server that is reading a mount of that Windows directory and importing the files to a database. Right now we're using flag files to indicate when a csv is no longer being written to; the flag files gets written after the csv is done. I'd really rather just get what I need from the csv itself, but I can't seem to find a way to tell when the file is open and being written to. lsof doesn't seem to answer my need. I've tried using flock and open the file with an exclusive lock, thinking it might throw an error if the file is being modified, but it doesn't. Any thoughts?

If a case like that occurs I'd like to stop processing that file, and add that filename to a map of filenames to occurrence counts.
