• Incremental build with continuous integration server

  Does any of the continuous integration servers support incremental builds or filtering mechanism? For example, I want to configure some kind of filtering (as I call it) so that committing file to the specific folder will not cause full (clean) build triggering, but will cause only incremental build. By 'incremental build' I mean process that will put only committed files to the required place and all application would not need to be rebuilt from scratch. Working with images is good example of the case when we need such filtering and thus incremental builds: why do we need to rebuild whole application if only images have been changed? What we need to do is just place images to the dedicated place on server.

• Entity Framework 4.0 Unit Testing

  Hi, I've implemented unit testing along the lines of this article with a fake object context and IObjectSet with POCO in EF4. http://blogs.msdn.com/adonet/archive/2009/12/17/test-driven-development-walkthrough-with-the-entity-framework-4-0.aspx But I'm unsure how to implement a couple of methods on my fake object context for testing. I have CreateQuery and ExecuteFunction methods on my object context interface so that I can execute ESQL and Stored Procedures but I cant (easily) implement them in my fake object context. An alternative would be to use a test double of my repository instead of a double of my object context as suggested here: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/adonetefx/thread/c4921443-e8a3-4414-92dd-eba1480a07ad/ But this would mean my real repository isnt being tested and would seem to just bypass the issue. Can anyone offer any recommendations?

• What is the most efficient way to list all of the files in a directory (including sub-directories)?

  I am writing a servlet which will examine a directory on the server (external to the web container), and recursively search for certain files (by certain files, I mean files that are of a certain extension as well as a certain naming convention). Once these files are found, the servlet responds with a long list of all of the found files (including the full path to the files). My problem is that there are so many files and directories that my servlet goes extremely slow. I was wondering if there was a best practice or existing servlet for this type of problem? Would it be more efficient to simply compile the entire list of files and do the filtering via js/jquery on the client side?

• How Likely Is It That I'll Get Sued Developing Software?

  It has been a practically unanimous truth on StackOverflow that if you work as an independent consultant, you should probably form a corporation (as seen here), to limit personal liability, supposedly to protect you in case of lawsuit. It seems to me that developing software does not result in many lawsuits, but this is an empirical (objective [and not community wiki]) question: How likely is it that a lone software developer will be sued? Also, by whom (a disgruntled company, coworker)? Since incorporating is basically taking out insurance, the likelihood of catastrophe needs to be taken into account. Also, aren't there standard laws covering, for example, total screw-ups with corporate data that mean that protect the lone cowboy/girl/person/coder?

I don't mean download time of the resources, but the actual time the browser took to render something. I know that this time would vary based on factors on the client machine, but would still be very handy in knowing what the rendering engine takes a while to load.   K&R C Programming Language: pg. 105 Extend entab and detab to accept the shorthand entab -m +n to mean tab stops every n columns, starting at column m. entab replaces a number of spaces with a tab character and detab does the opposite. The question I have concerns the tab stops and entab. I figure that for detab it's pretty easy to determine the number of spaces needed to reach the next tab stop, so no worries there. With entab, replacing spaces with tabs is slightly more difficult since I cannot for sure know how large the tab character goes to its own tab stop (unless there is a way to know for sure). Am I even thinking about this thing properly?

  I have read lots of questions about i18n, but I haven't found any about performance. I have a simple backend app listing the contents of an ads table. These ads have a category, that is translated in some languages (it's defined as i18n in the Doctrine schema). So, when I add a "table_method" in my generator.yml to include de Category table, it reduces the number of queries, but there are yet some of them referencing i18n translation tables. So, if I add the category Translation table to the query, it reduces even more the queries BUT it increases the processing time considerably. Why this time penalty? Just because of the translation table? And why isn't the filter using this method to avoid so many translation queries as well? I mean, if I want to filter by category, it is making one query per category to include the translation table. Why??

• iphone app photo upload to server from app threads

  I have an app that needs to upload a least 5 photos to a server using API call available with the server. For that I am planning to use threads which will take care of photo upload and the main process can go on with the navigation of views etc. What I cant decide is whether it is OK to spawn five separate threads in iphone or use a single thread that will do the upload. In the later cases obviously it will become quite slow. Basically an HTTP POST request will be made to the server with the NSMutableURLRequest object using NSCOnnection. More threads mean more complexity and sync issues, but I can try to write code as neat as possible if it means better performance than a single thread which is simple but is a real stopper if performance is considered. Anybody with any experience in this kinda app. ??

But how do I calculate the centroid of a weightless polygon (made from aerogel perhaps :), where each vertex has a weight? • OpenSSH (Windows) does not forward X11

  I'm running Ubuntu 13.04 in VM and I wanted to do X11 forwarding to my host (Win 8), so far it works fine using PuTTY and XMing server for Windows. But I am curious why it doesn't work if I use OpenSSH binaries (it comes together with Git for windows). This is what I've done so far: ssh -X [email protected] (also tried with -Y) then gedit but received error of Cannot open display. echo $DISPLAY came out as empty. So, I try to export DISPLAY=localhost:0.0 but it still won't work. The DISPLAY environment that I set is exactly as when it runs with Putty. I also try changing the DISPLAY to 192.168.2.3:0.0 and other display number as well, but still it won't work. Of course I could just use Putty to make it work, but I was wondering why OpenSSH binaries does not work. I have enabled all settings required in both /etc/ssh/ssh_config and /etc/ssh/sshd_config. • Pure sine wave inverter

  Not exactly programming (sorry) but I think it's pretty close and can be of interest to other programmers. I'm trying to setup a battery power station so that I can work from anywhere. I go surfing a lot and my idea is to be able to work from wherever I can park my car (given there's coverage). So, I'm getting a deep cycle battery, a 240V charger (I'm in Australia), and an inverter. At the back of my laptop it says 19V and 4.62A. From the people I've spoken to that means it consumes about 90W at most. So my inverter needs to be able to output about 100W. Most of them seem to be 200W and up so this shouldn't be a problem. I want to be able run my laptop for 10 hours (plus the 2 hours I get from the laptop battery) straight. According to the people I've spoken to and from what I gather online I need a battery that has the amp hours for my "amp draw". I have no idea how to calculate this but I've been guesstimating. Most deep cycle batteries seem to be classified using amp hours (Ah)... 35Ah, 50Ah, 75Ah, 100Ah, and so on. However the amp hours on those batteries is for a 240V and I seem to be using 19V. According to an expert I spoke to you'd need a 100Ah battery to power a 5A appliance at 240V for 10 hours (you only get about 50% useful power). That to me is 5A * 240V = 100Ah battery. So, naive as I might be I take 240V and divide that by my 19V and reach the conclusion that I can get away with a battery that's about 12 times smaller than that 100Ah. The expert told me I needed a 50Ah battery so that's probably what I'll be getting, but it would be interesting to know what I theoretically would need to power my laptop for 10 hours. As for charging the battery the expert I spoke to said I needed a 3-5A charger to be able to charge that 50Ah battery from flat to full in about 10 hours (I will just leave it plugged in over night). Now to my question. The expert said it's not a matter of "if" more like a guaranteed "when" my computer will stuff up if I don't use a "pure sine wave inverter". From what I gather the power that comes out of that battery is not as clean as the power we get in the socket at home. Apparently it's "square" and the one in the socket is nice and smooth. I've already got an inverter, but it's not "pure". Do I really need to buy the $200-300 pure sine wave inverter or can I get away with something else? Perhaps the laptop adapter that sits in the middle of my laptop power cable already fixes that wave to be nice and smooth? Thanks!

  Hi, I'm a desktop application developer, and I plan learning html5, but as it's not released, there is no (almost) published books and no too much infomation from beginners on the web... I fell I should start with html4 and the current web development skills. I think, I should start with html4, css and javascript... but there are so many technologies related that I get lost :D So, what current technologies will be sill used when html5 be released? I mean, what about "jquery" and "ajax"? I know they are javascript under the hood, but will they still make sense in the future? What would you recommend me considering that I have just a little bit of html knowlegde, almost null CSS and completely null in javascript? Thanks in advance.

• What is the most mature library to render equirectangular images in Flash?

I'd like to display them in a custom Flash player so that the user could see the spherical nature of the images, and "look up", "look down", "look left/right" (or pan, zoom, etc). (Note that I have a long series of images, so the library must allow for dynamic loading of the images themselves, rather than having the images "baked" into the SWF player.) What is the best library to manage the display of the equirectangular images in Flash? By "best", I mean the most mature, most reliable, most robust, and fastest performing. • Why is comparing against "end()" iterator legal?

  According to C++ standard (3.7.3.2/4) using (not only dereferencing, but also copying, casting, whatever else) an invalid pointer is undefined behavior (in case of doubt also see this question). Now the typical code to traverse an STL containter looks like this: std::vector<int> toTraverse; //populate the vector for( std::vector<int>::iterator it = toTraverse.begin(); it != toTraverse.end(); ++it ) { //process( *it ); } std::vector::end() is an iterator onto the hypothetic element beyond the last element of the containter. There's no element there, therefore using a pointer through that iterator is undefined behavior. Now how does the != end() work then? I mean in order to do the comparison an iterator needs to be constructed wrapping an invalid address and then that invalid address will have to be used in a comparison which again is undefined behavior. Is such comparison legal and why?

This could mean that you have incorrectly nested elements -- such as a "style" element in the "body" section instead of inside "head" -- or two elements that overlap (which is not allowed). One common cause for this error is the use of XHTML syntax in HTML documents. Due to HTML's rules of implicitly closed elements, this error can create cascading effects. For instance, using XHTML's "self-closing" tags for "meta" and "link" in the "head" section of a HTML document may cause the parser to infer the end of the "head" section and the beginning of the "body" section (where "link" and "meta" are not allowed; hence the reported error).
