• Spherical to Cartesian Coordinates

  Well I'm reading the Frank's Luna DirectX10 book and, while I'm trying to understand the first demo, I found something that's not very clear at least for me. In the updateScene method, when I press A, S, W or D, the angles mTheta and mPhi change, but after that, there are three lines of code that I don't understand exactly what they do: // Convert Spherical to Cartesian coordinates: mPhi measured from +y // and mTheta measured counterclockwise from -z. float x = 5.0f*sinf(mPhi)*sinf(mTheta); float z = -5.0f*sinf(mPhi)*cosf(mTheta); float y = 5.0f*cosf(mPhi); I mean, this explains that they do, it says that it converts the spherical coordinates to cartesian coordinates, but, mathematically, why? why the x value is calculated by the product of the sins of both angles? And the z by the product of the sine and cosine? and why the y just uses the cosine? After that, those values (x, y and z) are used to build the view matrix. The book doesn't explain (mathematically) why those values are calculated like that (and I didn't find anything to help me to understand it at the first Part of the book: "Mathematical prerequisites"), so it would be good if someone could explain me what exactly happen in those code lines or just give me a link that helps me to understand the math part. • Expanding RAID-5

  I'm new to RAID and trying to get my head around things. I have owned a Drobo in the past (which I liked) but it failed. Here's a hypothetical scenario: Assume I set up a RAID-5 array consisting of four 1TB hot-swappable 2.5" SATA drives. I name this volume 'My Data'. By my calculations, that would give me 2.7TB of usable space and the ability to recover if a single drive fails. I have a few questions: What happens if I pull out a single 1TB drive and replace it with a 2TB drive? Would the array automatically rebuild itself with no issues? Would the maximum capacity remain 2.7TB? If number (1) above is true and the array rebuilds itself with three 1TB drives one 2TB drive what would happen if I then pulled another 1TB drive out and stuck in a 2TB drive (you can see where I'm going here can't you). Would I eventually be able to gain more storage by gradually adding bigger drives? From a practical point of view, how much input is required from me as the end user whilst these drives are being pulled out and put in? On the Drobo, the storage space just automagically handles itself. Would I have to be actively involved in telling Ubuntu what was going on or would any of it be automated? Thanks in advance,

• Installed IE8 & SP3 on XP now I can't HTTPS from any browser

  The computer is Windows XP Professional SP3 with IE8. On the Tools Options Connections the "Settings" is GRAYED OUT (I am an admin on the machine) Any browsing of https:// addresses results in IE displaying the following: "this program cannot display the web page" After installing an alternate browser and trying the same https:// address I get a similar error message. I have tried using Compatibility View Settings to for all web pages and this has no effect on the problem. HTTP addresses work fine, I can PING sites such as google.com without issue. Question: What could be preventing me from getting at the settings to check to see if I'm using a proxy? What else could be preventing HTTPS access?

• Safari, IIS and optional Client Certificates

  I've a ASP.Net Webapp running on IIS7.5. The Webserver is configured to accept Client Certifcates. Unfortunately Visitors with Safari Browser are unable to view the Page. • How does a winkydink Teradici offer high res, full FPS, 3D rendering on ESXi 5 VDIs for AutoCAD/SolidWorks/1080p YouTube applications?

  How does such a small Teradici card ![enter image description here][1] offer high resolution, full FPS 3D graphics (1:38) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXA4QMmfY5Y&feature=player_detailpage#t=97s for ESXi 5.0/5.1 VDI environments? We're shooting for an AutoCAD/SolidWorks/YouTube 1080p capable environment. I can't see how such a small and low profile card could possibly have the horsepower to handle such GPU computations for a big environment like that. We're going to have up to 64 VDIs per server, and are a 500-1000 employee count sized company. Someone enlighten me please! Determining which route to go (between RemoteFX and VMware View/PCoIP) and the hardware (NVIDIA 4GB non-Quadro/Tesla GPUs vs Teradici card). Servers have three 4x, three 8x, and one 16x PCI-E lane. Two of the 8x lanes will be occupied by SAS RAID cards.

• How do I simplify a 2D game grid for level management while keeping its by-pixel features?

  (I cross-posted this from StackOverflow as this seems to be a more appropriate forum. I've looked around a little here and I did not find an answer, so I hope this is not a recurring question.) This is a question dealing with 2D world design. I am playing around by creating a 2D bird's eye view shooter game, and I am looking to make the game sleek and advanced. I hope to be able to write physics so projectiles have momentum and knock-down properties. I am immediately running into the problem of world design. I need a way to have level files that store everything there is about a game. This is easiest by just having a grid of objects. But there are thin-walls and other objects that don't seem to fit into a traditional cell of a grid. I want to be able to fit all these together so I can streamline level design; so I don't have to put in the exact pixel-specific start and end of a wall. There doesn't seem to be an obvious translation from level file to game without forcing myself into a pacman-life scenario, meaning a scenario where the game feels boxy and discrete. There is a contrast between the smoothly (relatively) moving characters and finite jumps in a grid. I would appreciate an answer that would describe implementation options or point me to resources that do. I would also appreciate references to sites that teach game design. The language I am using is Java (although I would love to use C or C++, but I can never find convenient resources in those languages). Thank you for any answers. • Remote X-windows between new RHEL5 and old Solaris 8

  I have a very small lab network with three boxes: a modern x86-based RHEL3 box, an x86-based RHEL5 box, and a 1998-vintage SPARC Ultra5 with Solaris 8. I can use ssh -X to run a program on the RHEL5 box and view the windows on the RHEL3 box. I believe this uses xauth and magic cookies?? I have followed the X-Windows HOWTO to set up xauth on the Solaris box, but so far no dice. I would like to be able to use the X-windows server on the RHEL3 box with a client program on the Solaris box (program running on Solaris host, windows appearing at Linux host). Is there a trick to this, or have I made a mistake following the instructions for setting up xauth and magic cookie?

• Windows XP Home Adobe.Com folder trying to install twice

  Twice I had to reinstall because Adobe 9 installed for a second time without me requesting or being asked to. There is a Adobe folder and an Adobe(2) folder. Installed were Adobe.com; AIS; Reader 9 and Active X. The system crashes. I can't do anything. In safe mode, can't uninstall or system restore. Can't click on anything in regular environment. Not only will I start looking for alternative pdf reader, and if I can't view a site without active X so be it. But if I do decide to re-install Adobe, HOW DO I CONFIGURE IT TO NOT UPDATE AUTOMATICALLY???? Day and a half to re-install everything.

• Logical and Physical network topologies

  I'm trying to understand the difference between logical and physical topologies but it's a bit confusing to me. Cisco states these as logical topologies, but from my understanding these should be physical topologies? This is what I understand so far: Physical PtP: desktop directly connected to a desktop Multiaccess: several desktops connected to a medium with access to each other (Cisco Ring image, how should I view this in a live situation?) Ring: several desktops directly connected to each other creating a loop? Logical PtP: two desktops (virtually) connected to each other with intermediairy devices in between MultiAccess: (don't have a clue) Ring: (don't have a clue) Could anyone help me out and perhaps explain the difference a bit more detailed? Online I can't find any useful topics. I am using the Cisco Network Fundamentals book.

  Scenario: 1 HP 6300 with latest XCS version 1 Command View 10.1 + with hosts defined as Windows 2008 2 BL460c Gen8 Servers with SPP 2012.10 and Windows Server 2012 Datacenter Edition with all the updates + MPIO feature enabled DSM v4.03.00 Cluster Analyser Tool triggers this error: Test Disk 0 does not support SCSI-3 Persistent Reservations commands needed to support clustered Storage Pools. Some storage devices require specific firmware versions or settings to function properly with failover clusters. Please contact your storage administrator or storage vendor to check the configuration of the storage to allow it to function properly with failover clusters. Any ideas? Thanks for your help!

• Toshiba wireless is blocked

  I have the same problem, a 32 bits toshiba nb255, it first had the windows 7 bu next I installed the ubuntu 11.04. The wifi does not turn on. I used the following issues the commands rfkill unblock wlan0, sudo ifconfig wlan0 down; they were not able. by setting up the bios in advanced menu, the wireless communication sw in ON, but it did not work also. neither the utilities toshiba nor utilities of ubuntu (wicd, wifi radar). by using gedit to file group, nothing. by installing madwifi packet, nothing. by exporting the wifi driver from windows to ubuntu, by means of the NDISwrapper packet, neither. I only see the device is up by protocols and down phisically, My question is, is it possible to enable or not shutdown physically the device?, because in the toshiba model nb255 the wifi is not set up/down bye means of a physical switch, but by means a combination of Fn + F8 (only for windows 7, no one more), Is there one possibility to configure the hot keys in ubuntu?

• Is version history really sacred or is it better to rebase?

  I've always agreed with Mercurial's mantra, however, now that Mercurial comes bundled with the rebase extension and it is a popular practice in git, I'm wondering if it could really be regarded as a "bad practice", or at least bad enough to avoid using. In any case, I'm aware of rebasing being dangerous after pushing. OTOH, I see the point of trying to package 5 commits in a single one to make it look niftier (specially at in a production branch), however, personally I think would be better to be able to see partial commits to a feature where some experimentation is done, even if it is not as nifty, but seeing something like "Tried to do it way X but it is not as optimal as Y after all, doing it Z taking Y as base" would IMHO have good value to those studying the codebase and follow the developers train of thought. My very opinionated (as in dumb, visceral, biased) point of view is that programmers like rebase to hide mistakes... and I don't think this is good for the project at all. So my question is: have you really found valuable to have such "organic commits" (i.e. untampered history) in practice?, or conversely, do you prefer to run into nifty well-packed commits and disregard the programmers' experimentation process?; whichever one you chose, why does that work for you? (having other team members to keep history, or alternatively, rebasing it).

• Root cause for high CPU usage; which measurement to trust more: Windows Task Manager or Process Explorer?

  Consider this Windows 8.1 machine (in-place upgrade from Windows 8) with differing reports on its CPU usage. The machine is idle, and has been for 3 days. There are no CPU intensive tasks running currently nor over the 3 day idle period. Windows Task Manager is reporting CPU usage constantly at an incredibly high value (and increasing over time!) at around 75%. Process Explorer from SysInternals reports that the CPU usage is much different at around 42% How does Process Explorer report 42.14% usage, but its columns report Idle at 57%, with the sum of the other processes not even approaching 10%? Which of these two values should I trust more, and why should it be trusted over the other measurement? How can I actually determine which process is causing Task Manager to report its values? I want to see hidden files, so from Tools > Folder Options > View , I change the settings as below, and click on OK: But I can't see hidden files. when I double check the Options, I see the settings changed automatically as below : I know this is a virus-like application! checking by a virus total via ProcessExplorer didn't help : How can I understand with process is related to this issue?

• Vaadin Calendar events not shown if overnight [migrated]

  In my vaadin project there is the possibility to create events that are shown by the calendar. It does works, except when the event is overnight, let's say the night from 23th to 24th, and the calendar shows as only day the 24th. In this case the part of the event that belongs to the 24th is supposed to be shown, but it is not. When I switch to weekly view, the event is shown properly. • Can ping/nmap server, nothing else

  I was SSHed into our ubuntu LAMP server , and was just doing a svn update, which hung. I disconnected, and since then, I have not been able to SSH in or view any of our websites (neither from my network or through a remote machine). I would have just assumed the server went down, but I can ping the machine and get really quick responses. Using nmap on the box shows all the normal ports open, so I am confused This server is hosted remotely in a datacenter, do I have any remaining options except contacting them for support? Thanks!

• Smarter Search Results in NetBeans IDE 7.2

  After you search your code using NetBeans IDE (using Ctrl-F for "Find" or Ctrl-H for "Replace"), you see the Search Results window, which looks like this: At least, the above is how it looks in NetBeans IDE 7.2. Before that, you didn't have all those extra columns (which can be displayed in the Search Results window after clicking the small button top right in the view) and you also didn't have the quick search (which is invoked by typing directly into the Search Results window), as can be seen here: So, the Search Results window now provides a lot more info than before. Being able to know the path to a file I've found, as well as the last modification date, file size, and the number of matches within the file, is useful at the end of a search process. In the NetBeans IDE 7.2 New & Noteworthy, the above changes are described in the Utilities section, as well as in the Quick Search in OutlineView section, where you can read that these are generic solutions that can be used in your own OutlineViews.
