  How can I make them modal? With modal I mean: The dialog should block the desktop so the user has only two options: Either cancel the dialog or enter text into it. (I want this basically because new windows might popup and can steal focus and additionally that other programs can access configuration files inside that container) Background: I want to ask a passphrase after login for an encfs container. So either entering a pass, or continue with cancellation of this dialog. Note: This is not a duplicate of modal dialog popup alarm, as I am interested especially in a solution to Zenity dialogs.

  We have HP D2700 disk enclosure and we would like to monitor D2700 (connected to HP Proliant DL360G8) for alarms.I have following questions regarding this. What are the options available for reporting D2700 hardware alarms (disk failure, power failure) via SNMP? We understand the D2700 to have an Ethernet interface for controller A and B and alarms are available via SNMP via this interface. Can anyone provide the actual alarms via this interface? (MIB and alarm list) As we have a number of D2700’s and would like to minimize the number of physical connections to the switch and associated IP addresses; Is there a mechanism to monitor the D2700 from the SCSI connected HPDL360 and raise SNMP alarms from the DL360 for hardware failures on the D2700? If so can anyone provide details and the actual alarms and MIB via this mechanism? Thanks!

• Troubleshooting Amazon EC2 reboot

  We've had a server (CentOS) running in EC2 for a few months. It had been going pretty smoothly until today when we got an alarm that the server was unavailable (HTTP service couldn't be reached). So I tried SSHing into the box but that timed out as well. I logged into the EC2 console and it said the instance was running and there wasn't anything in the system log. One odd thing I noticed is that even though we have an Elastic IP attached to it (which shows in the Elastic IP management area), the instance detail is not showing that there is an EIP associated with the instance. I looked through the message log and the last thing I see around the time we got our alert was the dhclient renewed the lease. I'm guessing there may have been some sort of issue with the networking. How might I check if that was the problem, or if there were any other issues that may have caused our instance to stop responding?

• Alerting system for Munin

  I am very satisfied with munin as a monitoring tool (as I only have a simple 2-server setup) but its alerting system is very annoying as you can only configure it to send an e-mail upon every check which generates a warning or an error. It seems like the only option is to use Nagios but in Debian it has Apache as a dependency and I already use nginx on my monitoring machine. All I want is to have the possibility to silence/acknowledge the alarm while I am working on a fix, so that I don't get bombarded with e-mails. Nagios seems like an oversized solution for that anyway. Is there any simple solution for that or am I the only one who feels like he needs such a tool?

• Should EC2 server self register or have admin server

  I'm creating AWS servers using chef. I am also planning on enabling auto-scaling. While we have automatic monitoring setup already (server density or nagios etc), I was also going to setup the cloud watch alarm for the status check on the server. This led me down the path of trying to decide whether to install the ec2-command-line tools on the server itself (which then requires me to install java on the servers -- despite no other need for Java in our environment) or to possible have an "admin" box that will check periodically for servers and make sure they have their alarms set. I expect this paradigm to carry over to other things we want to configure (perhaps ensuring that termination protection is setup on production servers?). Any thoughts as to why to go one direction or another?

  Hi, I'm new to this site but have found the articles and feedback very useful. We have a Server Room which our Organisation owns and controls, yet there are several thirs party companies that have open access to this room. As such, we have been asked to put together a protocol paper that stipulates the standards that we expect to be adhered to when working in this room. Other than the monitoring of UPS loads, Air Cooling functionality, alarm systems etc, does any one have any guidance on the kind of issues that need to be documented to make this protocol all encompassing? I'm thinking along the lines of not leaving cardboard or other combustibles in the room, not having food and drink in the room, not altering the fabric of the building by drilling through walls etc? • 3½" PATA Western Digital Caviar SE (250MB) makes steady ticking sound when idle

  I've started to notice a ticking sound emanating from my WD2500JB. It is not alarmingly loud. The sound seems to occur only when the drive has been idle for some time, and will cease upon (some?) disk activity. The sound has a regular, steady cadence of somewhere between about 4 and 6 ticks per second. I'm not entirely certain that it just started making these sounds, since I previously had the drive — mounted in a USB enclosure — stored out of earshot, and only recently moved it to where I can hear it. The SMART attributes for the drive do not indicate any problems. I did have some errors to clean up recently (since I started noticing the sounds). The errors occurred on an ext3 filesystem. The drive had been powered down while mounted a few times prior to that fsck. Is this cause for alarm? Should I scrap the drive on principle?

• Can I disable email alarms in iCal?

  I have iCal syncing with a Google Calendar account, and for some reason, some meeting invites that I accept wind up with an email alarm set for 10 minutes before the meeting. This causes iCal to send me an email through Mail.app at the appointed time. This is a pain in the neck, because Mail.app launches if it's not open (and since I use a different client, it never is), and if I'm offline, Mail.app starts throwing up error messages. And besides, I don't want meeting alarms in my inbox. Is there any way to completely disable email alarms in iCal? The only option I see is "Turn off all alarms" - but I don't want to turn off the pop-up windows, just the emails. I remove those alarms any time I come across them, but sometimes they slip through.

It has one file that I can get to. It is D:\Recovery. That shows a "Protected by PC Angel" graphic. How can I get past this? Should I do it? Is the virus scanner wrong? (I am using Avast).

  I have recently switched from MAC to Windows Vista. I used to have LittleSnitch on Mac where I can create filters and disable browsing to other websites. I mean, I can create filters so that LittleSnitch will not send traffic to specific websites like Google Analytics etc. However, I cannot find a similar software on Windows. I tried Zone Alarm firewall, but it doesn't let you add filters to stop traffic to specific websites. Are there any software available on windows which are similar to LittleSnitch?

My OS is Windows 7 (32bit) and the antivirus is zonealarm extreme security 10.1.079.000 . I installed flash player 11 but no success. I exited zone alarm to watch video, but no success again and error is the same. I don't know what's the problem . I searched a lot but didn't find the problem. I'd appreciate any idea.

  I've recently bought a refurbished Toshiba Satellite A660 11M and I get the blue screen of death appearing fairly frequently now, and I can't seem to work out why or how to prevent/cure it. Firstly I thought it was due to Zone Alarm from what I read on the net, but then I thought it was a memory issue after it crashed whilst I was running Memtest. But after I ran Memtest a second time, it completed without any errors... • Juniper J4350 out of order

  I have got two (2) Juniper routers J4350 that are out of order : All the interfaces are down (leds on the interfaces don't ligthen, ping dosen't respond) No output on the console port (even when booting) I've tried to reset the router (holding the RESET CONFIG button on the front panel during 15 seconds) and nothing happened, even while booting the device I've opened the router to check the fans. I've removed some dust and nothing has changed. I wanted to precise that the leds on the front panel are all on: The POWER led is green The STATUS led is red The ALARM led is on and is orange The HA (High Availablity) is on and orange as well I have found nothing on the Internet to solve this problem... • Time between AWS Notifying of Scale Down and Terminating instance

  Here is the scenario, there are multiple EC2 instances behind a load balancer. When traffic dies down, the SCALE_DOWN policy is triggered from a CloudWatch alarm. What I would like, is for the instance that is going to be terminated, or a separate server altogether, to be able to run a quick script that will execute a few commands to ensure all data has been transferred. My initial question was going to be how can I send a notification when an instance is going to be terminated by an auto scale, SCALE_DOWN policy. But then I saw this question Amazon EC2 notifying the instance when the autoscale service terminates it. If the notification is sent, how much time is there before the instance actually gets terminated? Are there any parameters to specify this time? Would it be a better idea to notify an instance that it is no longer needed, and get the instance to terminate itself once it has finished running the final script? Or, am I making this into a bigger problem than it actually is, and theres a far simpler solution?

• Cisco PIX 515 doesn't seem to be passing traffic through according to static route

  Ok, so I am having a spot of bother with a Cisco PIX515, I have posted the current running config below, now I am no cisco expert by any means although I can do basic stuff with them, now I am having trouble with traffic sent from the outside to address: 10.75.32.25 it just doesn't appear to be going anywhere. Now this firewall is deep inside a private network, with an upstream firewall that we don't manage. I have spoken to the people that look after that firewall and they say they they have traffic routing to 10.75.32.21 and 10.75.32.25 and thats it (although there is a website that runs from the server 172.16.102.5 which (if my understanding is correct) gets traffic via 10.75.32.23. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as to me it should all just work, but its not (obviously if the config is all correct then there could be a problem with the web server that we are trying to • Trojan infection help please

  Hey, I was browsing some websites and somehow obtained a trojan through some sort of silent download. Google Chrome started acting funny and wouldn't load web pages and neither would internet explorer. Only Firefox worked. I rebooted my computer and as usual logged into my email account as well as my bank account online completely forgetting about the infection. Could my information have been sent to the person or people or wrote the trojan? I downloaded Zone Alarm and took care of the issue, I'm just worried about when I absentmindedly logged into my email account and bank account online while I was infected.

• How to copy password from Mono-executed KeePass2 to xterm on Linux?

  I use KeePass2 to access username/password information in a Dropbox file. This allows convenient access from multiple devices. I can't seem to copy a password to the clipboard on my Linux 2.6.27.41-170.2.117.fc10.x86_64 system, however, in order to supply the password to a prompt in an xterm(1). I've tried both Ctrl+C/Ctrl+V and highlighting and mouse button 2 clicking. The KeePass2 program on the Linux system is executed by Mono. How can I copy the password to the xterm(1)? [Aside: I think we need a "KeePass" tag.] ADDENDUM: My mouse buttons were misconfigured: button 2 wasn't set to "copy". Sorry for the false alarm.

  Is it possible to have my box with an ASUS P8H77-I to automatically power on each sunday at 0:00 (for backup tasks)? I could not find such an option in the BIOS (or rather EFI). [edit] nevermind, I found it. Its called "RTC alarm date" or sth like this. Still I wonder if there was a possibility to wake the machine like every week on sunday? As it seems, I can only set either everyday, or a single day in the month. I would like to do weekly backups, but this would only allow me to do monthly backups.

  If you use Sleep Mode on your PC, have you ever noticed that moving your mouse will wake the computer from sleep mode? If you would prefer to only have the PC wake up when you hit a key instead, there’s a simple tweak. Just type Mouse into the start menu search box, or the Control Panel search box, and then open up the Mouse Properties panel. Find the Hardware tab, select your mouse in the list, and then click the Properties button. You’ll have to click the “Change settings” button before you can see the Power Management tab… And now, you can uncheck the box from “Allow this device to wake the computer”. That’s all there is to it.
