• Star Trek inspired home automation visualisation

  I’ve always been a more or less active fan of Star Trek. During the construction phase of my house I started coding a GUI for controlling the house which has an EIB. Just for fun I designed a version inspired by the LCARS design used in Star Trek TNG and showed this to my wife. I showed her several designs before but this was the only one, she really liked. So I decided to go on with this. I started a C# WinForms application. The software runs on a wall mounted Shuttle Barebone-PC. First plan was an industrial panel-pc but the processor was too slow. The now-used Atom is ok. I started with the LCARS-controls found on Codeproject. Since the classic LCARS design divides the screen into two parts this tended to be impracticable, so I used my own design For now the software is able to: Switch lights/wall outlets Show current temperatures for all room controllers Show outside temperature with a 24h trend chart Show the status of the two heat pumps Provide an alarm clock (e.g. for cooking) Play internet radio streams Control absence Mute the door bell Speak status messages via speech synthesis For now, I’m working on an integration of my electric meter. The main heat pump and the electric meter are connected to my LAN. I also tried some speech recognition, but I’ve problems with the microphone. I't’s working when you are right in front of the PC, but not far away, let’s say on the other side of the room. So this is the main view. The table displays raw values which are sent over the EIB – completely useless but looks great For each floor I have a different view. Here you can see the temperatures and check the status of the lights (the buttons are blinking when a light is switched on) This is the view for the heat pump:   Next step would be to integrate a control of my squeezebox server (I use different Squeezeboxes through the house as a multiroom audio solution)

• What do you do to make sure you take proper/enough breaks, while avoiding unwanted side-effects of break taking?

  preamble It seems to me that computer programmers are one of a select few groups of people who actually take pleasure from sitting in front of computers for long periods of time. Most people in other professions actively dislike their time at computers, and do their best to avoid it (so, I assume, they don't have problems taking breaks). At least for me, having external cues for taking breaks, and clear instructions on what to do with each break (stretch, go for a walk, close my eyes, look into a distance of preferably a few km and focus on faraway objects, etc...), is a must. So far, I've just been making up the breaks and tools to get them as I go along, based on what looks to be low-specificity information found on the net (generic stuff ala ergonomics advice for office staff). This has led to all sorts of side effects - loss of attention as I get distracted if I walk around, breaks in flow with alarm clocks interrupting my thoughts, and people around me assuming I'm low on work due to the frequency of my walking around compared to everyone else. /preamble tl;dr Taking breaks is important My internal break taking system doesn't work, and ad-hoc ones have unwanted side effects What do you do to make sure you take proper breaks? Clarke has said that any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. As a kid in the midst of an increasing technological revolution, electronics were at the heart of that. Learning electronics was made easy through the Science Fair Electronic Project Kits found at Radioshack. Through the project guides, kids could construct various ‘experiments’ by attaching wires to terminal springs that make circuits. The terminal springs would wire in components such as LED segment lights, photo sensors, resistors, diodes, etc. While it was fun getting the projects to work, the manuals lacked in depth explanation as to what was happening in the circuit to produce the project’s result. Why it was awesome: First, it was a simple buy for parents. Everything you needed to get your child interested in electronics was right in the kit. You didn’t need to breadboard or solder. I remember a distinct feeling of accomplishment making a high-water alarm or a light-sensor game with the realization that the bundles of wires springing up from the kit were actually doing something! Modern equivalent: You can still pick up variations of the 100-in-1 kits, but their popular replacement seem to be Snap Circuits by Elenco. All of the components are mounted on a plastic base with a contact on either end which interconnect with each other and the plastic base that projects can be mounted to. Each component also has the electrical diagram symbol for that component drawn on it so it can help you read schematics. For that reason alone, I like these better. • Generic Repositories with DI & Data Intensive Controllers

  Usually, I consider a large number of parameters as an alarm bell that there may be a design problem somewhere. I am using a Generic Repository for an ASP.NET application and have a Controller with a growing number of parameters. public class GenericRepository<T> : IRepository<T> where T : class { protected DbContext Context { get; set; } protected DbSet<T> DbSet { get; set; } public GenericRepository(DbContext context) { Context = context; DbSet = context.Set<T>(); } ...//methods excluded to keep the question readable } I am using a DI container to pass in the DbContext to the generic repository. So far, this has met my needs and there are no other concrete implmentations of IRepository<T>. However, I had to create a dashboard which uses data from many Entities. There was also a form containing a couple of dropdown lists. Now using the generic repository this makes the parameter requirments grow quickly. The Controller will end up being something like public HomeController(IRepository<EntityOne> entityOneRepository, IRepository<EntityTwo> entityTwoRepository, IRepository<EntityThree> entityThreeRepository, IRepository<EntityFour> entityFourRepository, ILogError logError, ICurrentUser currentUser) { } It has about 6 IRepositories plus a few others to include the required data and the dropdown list options. In my mind this is too many parameters. From a performance point of view, there is only 1 DBContext per request and the DI container will serve the same DbContext to all of the Repositories. From a code standards/readability point of view it's ugly. Is there a better way to handle this situation? Its a real world project with real world time constraints so I will not dwell on it too long, but from a learning perspective it would be good to see how such situations are handled by others.

It caused some problems with the backup target folders, so I want it to be inactive while I am making changes to these folders. I started the application itself, but could not find some kind of "Pause" button. So I decided to just stop its process. I first tried the lazy way - the system monitor in the Gnome panel has a "Processes" tab - but didn't find it listed there. Then I did a sudo ps -A and read through the whole list. I don't recognize everything on the list (many process names are self-explaining, like evolution-alarm, but I don't recognize others like phy0) but there was nothing which sounded even remotely like crashplan. But I know that there must have been a process belonging to Crashplan running at this time, because the main Crashplan window was open when I ran the command. Do you have any advice how to stop this thing from running? The best solution would involve temporary preventing it from loading on boot too, since I may need to reboot while doing the maintenance there.

• Nagios plugin script not working as expected

  I have modified an off-the-shelf Nagios plugin perl script to (in theory) return a one or zero according to the existence, or not, of a file on a remote linux server. The script runs a remote ssh session and logs in as the nagios user. The remote linux servers have private keys setup for that user, and on the bash command line the script works as expected, but when run as a plugin it always returns '1' (true) even if the file does not exist. Some help with the logic or a comment on why things are not working as expected within Nagios would be appreciated. I'd prefer to use this ssh login method rather than having to install nrpe on all the linux servers. • Scheduling notifications in Android

  Hi, I need to be able to schedule multiple Notifications at different times in the future. I tried doing this with an AlarmManager, but that isn't suitable, for the following reason. From AlarmManager.set(): "If there is already an alarm for this Intent scheduled (with the equality of two intents being defined by filterEquals(Intent)), then it will be removed and replaced by this one." Guess what, the sending intents are equal, apart from different Extra's (but those don't count for filterEquals). So how can I schedule multiple notifications, which will still be shown when my application is killed (the whole reason I tried AlarmManager)? Thanks.

• Set a OGG in raw folder as Ringtone/Notification?

  Hi, I have some ogg audios in my raw folder and I'm trying to set one of them as a Ringtone (or Notification, Alarm... whatever). I've been looking at the source code of RingDroid and I can see how is this done using the ContentValues and MediaStore, but in all the examples I've seen, the audio files is in the SDCard. Is it possible to set the ringtone directly from the raw folder? If not, how can I make a copy of the raw file to a folder in the SD? Thanks in advance.

• Detecting the type of iPhone interrupt

  I can detect that the iPhone went to sleep and came back from sleep, by using the applicationWillResignActive and applicationDidBecomeActive. But how do I find out what kind of interrupt it was. I am making an audio player application, and need to keep the audio playing when the iPhone goes to sleep (which I know how to do). But I need to interrupt the audio when a message, alarm or low battery interrupt occurs. Also I need to resume the audio when the event is over. So how do I differentiate between these different interrupts.

  It isn't so interesting to find out what this text editor here or that IRC client there was programmed with, also it isn't really hard and neither are there really suprising things to come out. Wow so it was programmed in Python, I didn't expect that. What I'm asking is: What are the things that we daily see, use or generally need programmed with? To name a few (really only a few of those out there): My alarm clock It has many features so it would probably be hard programming it with assembler or whatever, so did they probably use a programming language? If yes, which? My electrical tooth brush The (stupid) board computer of my car. (6 years old, has few features but a red LED display showing me how cold/warm it is outside and how much gas I'm using up per hour at the moment) Those (old) plastic mini-mini computers with the LCD(?) displays that only had one game available on them: PacMan, tetris or so. I'm not directly thinking of this but it may be similar: Other, probably more interesting, things I didn't mention

• Why do AlarmManager broadcasts get cancelled when app gets killed?

  Ok so I have two BroadcastReceiver registered. When the app is closed they both fire at the appropriate times and do the appropriate things. If the app is closed then killed (say with an AppKiller), the receivers never receive their broadcasts, and nothing happens. Presumably the same thing happens if the parent app is killed due to low memory, so how do I ensure those broadcasts are fired/received. The API states that even if the app is killed it should fire, does anyone else have experience with this situation?   I am using a service in my android app, which is called when an alarm is activated by a calander. When the service has been activated i want it to be destroyed by the OnStart() method once it has completed its code. • Why does Perl's Crypt::SSLeay timeout on Intel Mac OS X machines?

  A have a Perl cron job that recently started having its HTTPS connections start failing with an error of "500 SSL read timeout". I've tracked that the error is being thrown as part of an alarm in Crypt::SSLeay, but I don't know if this is simply something taking too long to respond. So far, I've adjusted the timeout from the default 30 seconds to 10 minutes and it still times out. I've moved the script to other machines, and those on Intel Mac OS X systems all time out, while those under Linux, or on PPC Mac OS X systems run fine, so I don't think it's changes on the network or remote server. When the process started having problems does not coincide with any software updates or reboots on the machine, and I've contacted the server I'm connecting to, and everyone claims that they haven't changed anything. Does anyone have recommendations on trying to debug HTTPS, or have you ever seen this behavior and give recommendations on something I might've overlooked at that could've caused this problem?

• how to preform an activity at the android lock screen?

  I would like to perform an activity at the key guard screen, but the only way I can find to do so is to disable the key guard, do my activity, then re enable the key guard. This would be ok if it didn't cause the key guard screen to flash off and on (disable makes it disappear then re enable brings it back). I am wondering how I can perform an activity with it still being displayed? Kinda like how when the alarm goes off it shows a pop-up which is displayed over the key-guard screen?

• How to respond to any kind of interruption?

  My app is playing a pretty complex animation. It's like a flipbook. What I do is: I have a huge loop with selectors, and after every delayed call the next one is called. Now someone calls the user and the device suddenly shows up this fat green status bar and maybe some big pick-up-the-phone-call overlay. Or: The alarm clock rings, and a big alert sheet appears in front of just about everything. It would be great to just pause the whole animation in case of ANY interruption. Probably I've also missed like 5 more possible interruptions. How are you doing that? How do you get notified for all interruptions and then call one single -stopEverything method?

• Android ImageButton / Custom-Button?

  Hi everyone, I am new to android development. So far I could help myself in all matters by reading threads here on stackoverflow. Now I am stuck and need someones help. Unfortunately I am not allowed to post an image of a screenshot because I am a new mamber, so I try to descripe it. I have a Samsung Galasy S and the clock app that ships with it has an button called "+ Create alarm". I want to create a similar button for my app. I've been experimenting with ImageButton. I do know how to get that "+"-Icon onto an ImageButton, but only centered and without text. I guess this is a custom button. Does anyone know how to do this? Can I do it in xml or do I need to extend the view-class and make it my own view?
