  • How to force a host to not send a broadcast for an IP address in its own subnet?

    For a LAN, instead of a switch, I have built a topology where each machine is connected to a router. Each host is assigned an IP address from 10/8. Here are the interface details: Lets say I ping 10.16.0.3 from this host. The routing table of 10.16.0.2 has been configured to use the router (10.16.0.1) as the default gateway. But since the destination IP address (10.16.0.3) is in the same subnet it sends out an ARP broadcast. I want to disable this behavior of sending an ARP broadcast and instead force it to use the routing table. How do I accomplish this?

  • Why did Google remove the search box in developer tool from Chrome 22 stable release?

    In previous version of Chrome, there's the search box in developer tool, on the right top when I open it, just as shown below. (Sorry I can't upload image cuz' I don't have enough reputation for now.) http://i.minus.com/iklSx2vi0uzFB.JPG But, after I upgraded to the first release of Chrome 22 yesterday, that search box was gone, as shown below. http://i.minus.com/ibxXt9wnBekR7E.JPG It is such a useful search box that I rely on all the time, to search for something, or to validate an xpath. So does Google just 'hide' it somewhere else? Or do they really remove it? Anyone know why they made such changes?

  • How to recover Virtual Machines in Virtualbox?

    For some reason, all of a sudden, all virtual machines are gone from the User Interface in virtual box. I suspect CCleaner has something to do with it, but that's not the point. Both the virtual hardisks and the .xml files for the machines are still in their respective folders. How can I use them to get my virtual machines back into virtualbox? I tried simply creating a new machine from the old virtual hardisks, and it worked with the ubuntu guest, but not with the windows one. Plus, it'd be nice to get my old machines back instead of having to create new ones, that would keep me from having to fix some shortcuts as well as reconfigure shared folders and other stuff.   • Number Tabs in Chrome or Firefox

    I like to use the Ctrl or Alt + Number shorcut to jump quickly to a specific tab. Problem is: When you have a lot of tabs open it is hard to look at them and quickly know which one is tab number 7. Is there a way (extension possibly) to show a tab's number in its title? This way each tab would have a number added to its title right beside the favicon. This way you could immediately tell which number you need to press to jump to a specific tab. I use both Chromium and Firefox, so I'm accepting answers for either one (though I'd prefer both =) ).

  • Change the white background in webpages to another color

    I'm currently using a dark theme in firefox. It looks really nice, but many webpages use a plain white background. The resulting contrast is a little unpleasant and sometimes hurts the eye when I switch from a dark tab to a white tab. Is there a way to make firefox replace white backgrouns everywhere with some other color (light gray, for instance)? It could be a Stylish script, a userChrome.css hack, or anything that works (preferably as light as possible). To make myself clear: after I achieve my objective, the background color whenever I visit the super-user site should be light-grey instead of white, and the same should happen to any other site with a white background (google sites, tech crunch, etc). Is there a way to do that?

  • Super key to pause, mute mic, and mute speakers in windows

    EDIT:Just rephrasing the question: Does anyone know how to mute the mic using autohotkey? Here's why I need it: Whenever someone walks in my office I have to pause the media player. Sometimes, when I'm watching a video, I also have to mute the headphone speakers. And if I'm on a skype call I have to mute the mic. I want to assign all those functions to a single hotkey for convienience (probably the "mute" or "play/pause" key) and I'm pretty sure autohotkey can do that, but I don't know how to mute the mic using autohotkey. Plus, I also want to assign all reverse commands (play and unmute) to a single key (could be a different one or the same one). (I don't think it matters, but I'm using windows 7)

  • Disabling the command enter shortcut on Mac Entourage.

    It seems like disabling a shortcut should not be such a big deal, but I cannot seem to be able to do it for any shortcuts and specifically not for the combination that I keep hitting by mistake, every single day. The smaller space bar makes it very easy to hit the command key by mistake, and the return is a commonly used key when typing. I keep sending important e-mails before I am done typing, or worse, before I am done editing. I do not necessarily want to disable all the shortcuts, but that one for sure. The choices for changing anything in Entourage seem very limited. [Entourage for Mac 2008. Version 12.2.8. (101117) ESD] It is easy enough just to hit "send." This short cut causes a lot more trouble than it saves. Help.

  • UW-IMAP server, high load for one user

    We have been experiencing a very strange anomaly, with one specific user with our UW-IMAP server. We have about 75 users using the server, and one particular user, who is in about the middle as far as used storage keeps having issues with slow speed. Most of our users all use Thunderbird 2, or Thunderbird 3. Mostly 2, because of the performance issues we have had with 3. This user was on 3, and I downgraded him to 2. The performance has gotten better, but according to the imapd processes on the server, his username is using the most CPU % and CPU time. I've already done all the usual T/S'ing: Started profile from scratch, compacted folders, re-indexed, newer faster computer, etc.. Still, this users' imapd process is always using the most CPU on the server. For troubleshooting, we setup another user which has more usage, folders, etc.. than he does, but we don't see the users process taking up most of the CPU with the imapd process. So, it almost sounds like a particular email may be the culprit, but how can we find it, if thats the problem? This has been going on for a while, and he is a management person, so his patience is about to end. Does anyone have any ideas?

  • How can I create a macro that acts on a relative reference rather than an absolute reference to cell A1?

    I have a master rent statement in an Excel 2007 (macro enabled) spreadsheet that shows all tenants in rows with columns formed by the months. Each tenant then has a separate rent statement sheet like the one below that pulls the data through from the master rent statement and all I do then is to copy the last 4 columns to the right and add them to the right, just renaming the month labelled as ‘rent due’ with the current month and then hiding the previous last 4 columns to the left so that the statement always shows the previous month's activity and the amount due for the current month: I used a macro to speed up the creation of these statements, but then found that in some cases the result was wrong and needed major correction because the macro use absolute references i.e. its starting position was relative to cell A1 whereas some of my rent worksheets commence from a different column and in some cases from a different column and a different row. I have tried recording the macro with 'Use relative references' but when trying to use the macro it only gets part way through its operation before it stops and the message appears: Run time error '1004' Application defined or object defined error with the option to End or Debug or go to Help and then I'm stuck as I don't know how to debug and work in VBA or understand what has gone wrong. I want to record a single macro that always remains relative to the last 'Total Due' column heading (in the sample, it’s cell FF3 but on another worksheet could be cell GA26) and thus enables me regardless of where on the worksheet the rent statement is placed to add through my recorded macro a further four columns with updated dates and a repositioned 'Total Due' summary (in the sample in cells FE23 and FF23). The contents of cells FE23 and FE22 are always the same number of rows from the 'Sample Rent Statement, Service Charge and Sub Total' rows. I've searched on the web and in the help files of Excel 2007 but have been totally stumped by this, so currently I have to re-record a quantity of macros each month to cover all of the permutations of the worksheets in my Excel rent workbook, which is starting to become pointless in terms of saving time. Does someone know a solution to this problem please?!

  • Is it possible to use the same MAC address for an entire subnet?

    I wish to add static entries to the ARP table of my machine so that it uses a dummy MAC 00:11:22:33:44:55 for any IP address within the subnet 10.0.0.0/8 Using arp -s 10.0.0.0/8 00:11:22:33:44:55 does not work. What can I do? PS - I know it might sound strange why anyone would want to do this but kindly bear with me here. EDIT: I am using this so that the hosts do not send a broadcast ARP message. I route the packets to the appropriate last hop router which changes the dst MAC from the fake MAC to the MAC of the dst IP address. I can get everything working except I have to manually enter the fake MAC for each subnet IP address.

    During a discussion at work today in regard to doing some thorough acceptance testing of the system that I currently work on the topic of who should actually do the testing came up. I remarked that I didn’t think that I as the developer should be doing acceptance testing and a colleague, Russ Taylor, agreed with me and then came out with this little pearler: Kids don’t mark their own homework Maybe its a common turn of phrase but I had never heard it before and, to me, it sums up very succinctly my feelings on the matter. I tweeted about it and it got a couple of retweets as well as a slightly different perspective from Bruce Durling who said: I'm of the opinion that testers should be in the dev team & the dev *team* should be responsible for quality Bruce makes a good point that testers should be considered part of the dev team. I agree wholly with that and don’t think that point of view necessarily conflicts with Russ’s analogy. Yes, developers should absolutely be responsible for testing their own work – I also think that in the murky world of data integration there is often a need for a 3rd party to validate that work. Improving testing mechanisms for data integration projects is something that is near and dear to my heart so I would welcome any other thoughts around this.   • Process Power to the People that Create Engagement

    Organizations often speak about their engagement problems as if the problem is the people they are trying to engage - employees,  partners, customers and citizens.  The reality of most engagement problems is that the processes put in place to engage are impersonal, inflexible, unintuitive, and often completely ignorant of the population they are trying to serve. Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Delight? How appropriate during this short week of the US Independence Day Holiday that we're focusing on People, Process and Engagement. As we celebrate this holiday in the US and the historic independence we gained (sorry Brits!) - it's interesting to think back to 1776 to the creation of that pivotal document, the Declaration of Independence. What tremendous pressure to create an engaging document and founding experience they must have felt. "On June 11, 1776, in anticipation of the impending vote for independence from Great Britain, the Continental Congress appointed five men — Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman, and Robert Livingston — to write a declaration that would make clear to people everywhere why this break from Great Britain was both necessary and inevitable. The committee then appointed Jefferson to draft a statement. Jefferson produced a "fair copy" of his draft declaration, which became the basic text of his "original Rough draught." The text was first submitted to Adams, then Franklin, and finally to the other two members of the committee. Before the committee submitted the declaration to Congress on June 28, they made forty-seven emendations to the document. During the ensuing congressional debates of July 1-4, 1776, Congress adopted thirty-nine further revisions to the committee draft.   • Using Crypt function Python 3.3.2

    In Windows and Python version 3.3.2, I try and call the python module like so: hash2 = crypt(word, salt) I import it at the top of my program like so: from crypt import * The result I get is the following: Traceback (most recent call last): File "C:\none\of\your\business\adams.py", line 10, in <module> from crypt import * File "C:\Python33\lib\crypt.py", line 3, in <module> import _crypt ImportError: No module named '_crypt' However, when I execute the same file adams.py in Ubuntu, with Python 2.7.3, it executes perfectly - no errors. I tried the following to resolve the issue for my Windows & Python 3.3.2 (though I'm sure the OS isn't the issue, the Python version or my use of syntax is the issue): Rename the directory in the Python33 directory from Lib to lib Rename the crypt.py in lib to _crypt.py. However, it turns out the entire crypt.py module depends on an external module called _crypt.py too. Browsed internet to download anything remotely appropriate to resemble _crypt.py It's not Python, right? It's me...(?)     I am using the SAX parser in java. I am not sure: 1) What classes I need for this kind of situation? I am guessing I want to have Classes for (please let me know if my thoughts are completely wrong): -FosterHome (Contains an Arraylist of Family and Child) -Family (Contains ArrayList for Child and a String fro parent) -Child (contains ArrayList for ChildID) 2) How to handle this situation in the startElement and endElement method What complicates is due to the ChildID appearing in both the ChildList and the RemainingChildList.   • Visual Studio Macros on 64 bit fail with COM error

    I'm doing some javascript development and found a cool macro to region my code ("Using #region Directive With JavaScript Files in Visual Studio"). I used this on my 32 bit box, and it worked first time. Stepping through it with the Visual Studio Macros IDE, it fails the first time on the DTE.ExecuteCommand("Edit.StopOutlining") line with a COM error (Error HRESULT E_FAIL has been returned from a call to a COM component). If I attempt to run it a second time, I can run it from the Macro Editor with no issue, but not from within Visual Studio with the macro explorer 'run macro' command.
