    We are building a Rails application for a client that wants to run the app locally to be close to their data center for best performance. I had assumed we would use a standard web host. What requirements should we demand of the client's infrastructure..all I can think of so far is remote access for developers and a Linux machine? We don't have server admin expertise so would need to contract this, I doubt the client has the expertise. Does this sound like a recipe for disastor?!

  • Connecting to internet via phone on Linux

    I have a Sony Ericsson C702 phone with a flat fee internet subscription (GPRS/UMTS). I'd like to connect my Linux (Kubuntu 9.04) laptop to internet via this phone, using bluetooth (I also have a cable connection but that's propietary, doubt it'll work). How can I do this, preferably via GUI / NetworkManager / the BT applet that comes with KDE? In Windows I use SE's PC suite software which works great, but is not available for Linux.

    In using i see 2 types of code #!/usr/bin/sh and #!/user/bin/bash I have Googled this and the opinions vary a lot. The explanation I have seen on most websites is that sh is older than bash, and that there is no real difference. Does someone know the difference between these and can give a practical example when to use either one of them.   • How to retrieve the size of a database in restoring mode

    With pure SQL - how to do it? I doubt it is possible, since even the SQL Management Studio fails to show the size of such a database in the UI. Already tried: exec sp_helpdb 'DbInRecMode' ...won't show anything; exec sys.sp_helpfile 'DbInRecMode' ... something like file not found (Msg 15325) Main pitfall seems to be the issue, that select * from DbInRecMode.dbo.sysfiles won't work when the database is in restoring mode. Any ideas?

  • Start menu entries suddenly missing

    I am using Windows 7 x64 SP1 with all updates applied. During the last weeks I observed that some start menu entries / folders suddenly disappeared. Those programs then sometimes can be found using the search function of the start menu, then however they are labeled by the name of their executable (like photoshop instead of Adobe Photoshop). Does anyone know where to start looking for errors? Does the start menu has anything to do with windows search? I doubt it?

I highly doubt it's my DVD drive because this machine work fine before the install process. The DVD rom work. Is there a work around for this problem? edit: this is the problem that i'm having.     After finding out adding an autorun on a flash drive to change the icon to actually look like your flash drive, then after finding out that it'd work for Hard Drives too, I started to wonder if you could change your whole computer's icon so other computers on your network could actually see your physical computer. I doubt that there's a way to do this, but if there is, it'd be pretty cool. :D

  • No scheduled tasks in Esxi 5?

    I'm using the free version of VMWare's ESXi 5.1.0. I'm logged in as root in the vSphere client, and I want to create some scheduled tasks. According to the documentation, I should go to "Home"="Management"="Scheduled tasks". However, when I go to "Home", I only have "Inventory" and "Administration". There is no "Management" section. Is this a limitation of the free version (I doubt it, but still), or am I missing the obvious here?

    After reading a bit about interVLAN routing got a doubt regarding how trunking takes place at router and at switch.In case of switch we configure a port interface as trunk port and say all vlan's are allowed here but in case of router we configure sub interface as trunk saying particular vlan belongs to particular subinterface .Can't we configure only a single port interface on router just like Switch and say all vlan's are allowed here on this interface ,why to go for sub interfaces? Hope I'm able to put my question in right way.

  • Importer or converter for ClarisWorks cwk format?

    I have several ClarisWorks documents (*.CWK) that I'd like to import into a more modern format like Microsoft Word or Open Office. It seems Star Office can apparently open cwk files, but the product is discontinued and cannot be downloaded any more. There has been a feature request to add a cwk importer to OpenOffice since 2002, so I doubt that OpenOffice will support cwk files any time soon. Are there any utilities that can open a cwk file besides ClarisWorks itself?

    Hi All, I will be happy if someone clear doubt, i can see objects in view by using <%= debug @object % and lot of methods is there apart from view like .to_yml, etc Is there any method available for seeing the converted sql from ActiveRecord method in view, etc. Although I can find it in console but it will confuse when we run multiple queries.. example: User.find :all it will produce "SELECT * FROM users;" in output console But i want it in view are any other specific point like yml , etc ?   • Does a 300mbps 802.11n wireless connection have any noticeable speed improvement over 54mbps g?

    300mbps sounds wonderful, but not with my horrible Comcast internet connection. I doubt there's an internet connection in America that even hits 54mbps. So I'm guessing that the only reason someone would be inclined to upgrade is for faster data transfer within the local network. With my internet connection where download rates are rarely ever above a few hundred kilobytes a second, would I even see any improvement in switching from 802.11g to 802.11n?

    I saw some articles about how DNS propagation happens.I know that ISP or DNS server(such as google public dns) cache the ip address of website which it uses to convert domain name to ip address. But my doubt is from where these ISP or dns serevr know which nameserver to go for particular domain name. for example a domain.com has two name servers ns1.domain.com and ns2.domain.com. But how the ISP server or dns server know that it uses these name server and i have to send request to this name server.So where does this record mainatined?
