• How is architectural design done in an agile environment?

  I have read Principles for the Agile Architect, where they defined next principles : Principle #1 The teams that code the system design the system. Principle #2 Build the simplest architecture that can possibly work. Principle #3 When in doubt, code it out. Principle #4 They build it, they test it. Principle #5 The bigger the system, the longer the runway. Principle #6 System architecture is a role collaboration. Principle #7 There is no monopoly on innovation. The paper says that most of the architecture design is done during the coding phase, and only system design before that. That is fine. So, how is the system design done? Using UML? Or a document that defines interfaces and major blocks? Maybe something else?

• Getting out of my head

  (I put this on SO, but it got a couple close votes saying it belonged here instead...) I've spent the last year as a single person team developing a rich-client application (35,000+ LoC, for what it's worth). It's currently stable and in production. However, I know that my skills were rusty at the beginning of the project, so without a doubt there are major issues to the code. At this point, most of the issues are in architecture, structure, or interactions - the easy problems, even architecture/design problems, have already been weeded out. Unfortunately, I've spent so much time with this project that I'm having a hard time thinking outside of it - approaching it from a new perspective to see the flaws deeply buried or inherent in the design. How do I step outside my head and outside my code so I can get a fresh look at this code so I can make it better? Is this less of an issue than I think it is, or is this a problem for other people as well?

  I am a relative beginner when it comes to choosing web servers and hosting plans. I'm about to signup for a hosting plan with GoDaddy. My main requirement is ColdFusion and MySQL. The plans on offer include Linux and Windows based plans. Which one should I choose, and why? I don't have a lot of requirements other than what I mentioned above. • Having Trouble Granting Access Via Squid

  I'm by far no expert at this but how do I grant access to Squid? I'm current using 2.7.STABLE9. I've read you need to add a couple of lines, an acl and http_access line. So here's what I added and where. I highly doubt this is right since I'm trying to connect via my laptop and Firefox is yelling at me saying the proxy server is refusing connections. • How do I figure out which version of OpenCL comes with my nvidia-current-dev package?

  I am running Ubuntu 10.04 with an nvidia geforce GT 240 card. I installed nvidia-current-dev with apt-get, thus I got a bunch of headers and lib files for OpenCL. However, I am unable to figure out if I have OpenCL 1.0 or 1.1 (could be 1.2, though I doubt it). Does anyone know a way to figure out which version of OpenCL comes with the nvidia-current-dev package (version: 195.36.24-0ubuntu1~10.04.2)? If not, is there another place where I could get an answer?

  When you create a test for your class, what kind of naming convention do you use for the tests? How thorough are your tests? I have lately switched from the conventional camel case test names to lower case letters with underscores. I have found this increases the readability and causes me to write better tests. A simple utility class: public class ArrayUtils { public static T[] gimmeASlice(T[] anArray, Integer start, Integer end) { // implementation (feeling lazy today) } } I have seen some people who would write a test like this: public class ArrayUtilsTest { @Test public void testGimmeASliceMethod() { // do some tests } } A more thorough and readable test would be: public class ArrayUtilsTest { @Test public void gimmeASlice_returns_appropriate_slice() { // ... } @Test public void gimmeASlice_throws_NullPointerException_when_passed_null() { // ... } @Test public void gimmeASlice_returns_end_of_array_when_slice_is_partly_out_of_bounds() { // ... } @Test public void gimmeASlice_returns_empty_array_when_slice_is_completely_out_of_bounds() { // ... } } Looking at this test, you have no doubt what the method is supposed to do. I don't remember what it was called, or who was in it... all I remember is that, in one scene, the venerable sensei tells the hero: "You must develop your nunchaku technique." This became a bit fo a catchphrase amongst my high school mates. Well folks, I am developing my technuique. This blog has been renamed and the old posts removed--I could go into my reasons for this, but that would defeat the point of the exercise. Sorry if you liked 'em. It has been a good couple of years since I wrote anything here, so I doubt that I am putting out any regular readers. Will I be posting here more often, now that I've renamed and rethemed the place? • Is it worth it to learn some programming before college?

  I'm in my last year of highschool and I am very interested in programming, the thing is I don't know if it could be worth it to start learning programming now, im afraid that when I get to college they might just teach all I might have learned in a few classes making a waste the time spent on learning that before college. Right now I'm on my last year of highschool and I know absolutely nothing about programming. There are other similar questions where people answer saying it is good to learn beforehand, but I doubt their situation might be like mine, maybe they had much more time to learn programming (as if they were not on their last year of highschool) before college so they could learn some serious skills, besides they say they already know at least the basics about a language, instead, I know nothing and I have no idea how much could I learn this year. • Big Oh notation does not mention constant value

  I am a programmer and have just started reading Algorithms. I am not completely convinced with the notations namely Bog Oh, Big Omega and Big Theta. The reason is by definition of Big Oh, it states that there should be a function g(x) such that it is always greater than or equal to f(x). Or f(x) <= c.n for all values of n n0. My doubt is the why dont we mention the constant value in the definition? For example. lets say a function 6n+4, we denote it as O(n). but its not true that the definition holds good for all constant value. this holds good only when c = 10 and n = 1. For lesser values of c than 6, the value of n0 increases. So why we do not mention the constant value as a part of the definition.

• HP Envy Beats Edition can play CDs, but not DVDs

  After a fresh install, and various other tests (troubleshooting), I have concluded that my laptop (an HP Envy 14 - Beats Edtion) will not play DVDs, however it will play CDs. When I first got the laptop, up until recently it played DVDs perfectly, I doubt there is a hardware issue sees as it loads the DVDs and can view the files in them, but not play them, as well as read and work with CDs perfectly. Was there an update or something of the like that may have caused this? If so, is there a fix? I typically use this laptop 's HDMI out with my TV as a DVD player... so it would be very beneficial if there was a solution to this problem. There was a similar issue with the touchpad that there was a fix for... so I'm hoping that this is something similar

• is box-shadow (CSS3) really not ready to use? (according to "CAN I USE")

  I have a problem that I want you to help me, I am currently making a website, I am building that website on HTML5 and CSS3 technology, every feature I'd like to use I check it first in "CAN I USE", the technology I use most is box-shadow, and I already made some great things with it but, I have a doubt about the percentage of browser that don't support that technology, the percentage of browser that do not support box-shadow is around 17.12%, and if you see the conclusions (show options = other options = show conclusions) they say that that feature isn't ready yet because they are "Waiting for Opera Mini 5.0-6.0 to expire", I personally think that the best that we can do in order to make people update their browsers is not support older browser, but ... am I right thinking like this? will I have bad consecuences if I don't support older browsers? is worth to work twice just to support older browsers? should I still working with box-shadow?

  Hi to every one. I have a question regarding the real value of having NCSA's certifications. Today I reach their site and I easily passed the JavaScript certification within minutes, but I never reach questions related to Literal Javascript Notation (Json), closures or browser specific apis. This facts let me to doubt a bit of the real value of the test (and the proper certification you can have if you pay them $34), but maybe Im wrong and just earned a respected certification within the States for easy questions... in wich case I can spend some time doing other certifications on the same site. Did you have an NCSA certification and think is worth having it in your resume, or you know of a better certification program? thanks in advance, and looking forward to see your considerations.

  My complete requirement is development of a chat engine - including server, clients etc. Currently I am working on things at my desktop only but once done, I have to host it; basically incorporate it with in a site for chatting purpose. So, now my problem is: I am not clear about how the actual data flow is? I have googled and read about xmpp (a book by Peter Andre) also but I am not clear about the flow and what are the actual requirements to do the above mentioned task. What I currently know is: 1) I need a server - so selected ejabberd 2) I need client - still not sure which one to use and one other doubt is how this client thing will work when deployed on some website for chatting purpose. 3) Some library - don't know which one and what is the purpose? Can anyone guide me?

• it is a good approach to implement dependency injection in a desktop app?

  Well, the thing is that I am just about to create a Desktop App (with .NET windows forms) And now I just wonder if it would be really a wise choise to use any IoC (StructureMap,Ninject,Spring .Net), I have used them before for Asp.Net web applications but what makes me doubt now is the fact that working with windows forms my business entities will persist when I navigate through tabs and unlike than web forms or mvc apps where it would be necesary to inject my business entity for every new request that is performed, I mean this because of the Asp.Net page life cycle where is performed the initialization and controls instantiation. Maybe I am misunderstanding the point of using an IoC, so please tell me what do you think would be a better choise?

• Handling SMS/email convergence: how does a good business app do it?

  I'm writing a school administration software package, but it strikes me that many developers will face this same issue: when communicating with users, should you use email or SMS or both, and should you treat them as fundamentally equivalent channels such that any message can get sent using any media, (with long and short forms of the message template obviously) or should different business functions be specifically tailored to each of the 3? This question got kicked off "StackOverflow" for being overly general, so I'm hoping it's not too general for this site - the answers will no doubt be subjective but "you don't need to write a whole book to answer the question". I'm particularly interested in people who have direct experience of having written comparable business applications. Sub-questions: Do I treat SMS as "moderately secure" and email as less secure? (I'm thinking about booking tokens for parent/teacher nights, permission slips for excursions, absence explanation notes - so high security is not a requirement for us, although medium security is) Is it annoying for users to receive the same message on multiple channels? Should we have a unified framework that reports on delivery or lack thereof of emails and SMS's?

• Kubuntu 12.04 Won't let me search for wireless network

  Hello I'm running a brand new Kubuntu 12.04 single boot on my laptop, this is the first time I tried connecting to a wireless network. I tried using the network manager app allready on the task bar, but it doesn't let me tick the column to search for wireless networks, i.e. it will untick it automaticaly, it's dissabled by the software or the hardware, but I doubt it. I've tried searching the other questions on this site, and I can't see anything which helps with my problem. I know my wireless card is a Atheros AR9285, I don't think I installed any firmware for it, I'm sorry I can't offer more info but I'm completely new to networking and all that I have for the network to connect to are it's name and password of course.

• How to explain that writing universally cross-platform C++ code and shipping products for all OSes is not that easy?

  Our company ships a range of desktop products for Windows and lots of Linux users complain on forums that we should have been written versions of our products for Linux years ago and the reason why we don't do that is we're a greedy corporation all our technical specialists are underqualified idiots Our average product is something like 3 million lines of C++ code. My and my colleagues analysis is the following: writing cross-platform C++ code is not that easy preparing a lot of distribution packages and maintaining them for all widespread versions of Linux takes time our estimate is that Linux market is something like 5-15% of all users and those users will likely not want to pay for our effort when this is brought up the response is again that we're greedy underqualified idiots and that when everything is done right all this is easy and painless. How reasonable are our evaluations of the fact that writing cross-platform code and maintaining numerous ditribution packages takes lots of effort? Where can we find some easy yet detailed analysis with real life stories that show beyond the shadow of a doubt what amount of effort exactly it takes?

  I have some doubt regarding noimageindex value in meta robots tag. If I add this tag on my page say http://www.example.com/somepage/someaction.php and on that page the images are served from another page say http://www.exampleimg.com. Then will the tag has meaning. I mean to say will the images will be ignored by bots? Or exampleimg is not affected by that tag. And all images will be indexed? Note: We want to stop indexing of the images on that particular page.

I want to rewrite URLs for all dynamic pages, So I installed ISAPI_Rewrite 3 Lite on my web server also I had uploaded the .htaccess file with the basic rules as follows RewriteEngine on RewriteRule ^contact\.html$ contactus.php? [NC,R] I never worked before with ISAPI neither on URL- rewriting. My doubt is How should I proceed after installation. Should I upload .htaccess or httpd.conf file OR This s/w has ISAPI_Rewrite Manager which gives place to edit httpd.conf, Should I write rules on this. Anyways I had tried all these steps but unfortunately I couldn't find any remedies. Any immediate solution will be appreciable.

• Uses of LINK tag

  The <link> tag appears to have many uses aside from stylesheets. For example the W3 suggest using it for previous/next/index pages. I know that Opera also has a Navigation toolbar that will show links when present, including Home, Index, Contents, Previous, Next, Copyright, Author and more. (I doubt it is actually used by more than a handful of people.) Are there any other attributes that are useful, or other uses for the ones above? What about SEO benefit?

• Browser window size statistics?

  I was wondering, are there any statistics available on what size users have their browser set to nowadays? I know the screen resolutions (we have analytics, which shows those as well) but I doubt a lot of people with 1280*xxx and higher still browse full-screen though. My boss is determined to keep our website 900px wide though, because that way people with 1800*xxx resolutions can have two browser windows next to eachother without having to scroll horizontally. I have never seen anyone browse with two adjacent browser windows like that except here at my current job, so I'm kind of doubting whether this is the best decision or just his personal preference. Anyone that can help out here?

• Windows Phone 8 detected as mass storage

  From version 8 onwards Windows Phone supports MTP (media transfer protocol) to transfer audio and I thought I could use Rhythmbox to upload music onto my device. Thing is Rhythmbox doesn't display the device under Devices pane (there's no Device pane for that matter). I searched other questions here and tried out installing mtp-tools, mtpfs and also tried gMTP, which doesn't seem to detect the device as a portable player. I see that the device's icon looks like a Camera in dash bar and when I see the address location, it shows gphoto2://[usb:002,013]/, which makes me doubt that it's detected as a camera or as a mass storage device. /.gvfs/gphoto2 mount on usb%3A002,003 is where the actual mount is. What do I do to fix this? I tried creating .is_audio_player too.
