  • Using Blowfish Encryption within .NET

    - by Cragly
I am working on a project where I need to undertake Blowfish encryption and decryption. Is there anything out there that others are using to do this within but cannot find anything within a .NET C# environment? I would ideally like something does not rely on running an exe as this will eventually live on a live server where exe’s are bared! I have read some of the older posts on SO but nothing suitable. Any ideas? Thanks

  • Auto Encryption of web.config connection string

    - by Klaas Jan
I want to encrypt the connection string in web.config, the problem is each time a developer changes the connection string in web.config and publishes, it needs to be encrypted every time in the web server. Is there any way that the connection string can encrypted automatically every time someone publishes it? Note :- All of us work on our local machines other than the server. So encryption using local machine key is not an option.

  • Quantum Computing and Encryption Breaking

    - by Earlz
Ok, I read a while back that Quantum Computers can break most types of hashing and encryption in use today in a very short amount of time(I believe it was mere minutes). How is it possible? I've tried reading articles about it but I get lost at the a quantum bit can be 1, 0, or something else. Can someone explain how this relates to cracking such algorithms in plain English without all the fancy maths?

  • How to safely store encryption key in a .NET assembly

    - by Alex
In order to prevent somebody from grabbing my data easily, I cache data from my service as encrypted files (copy protection, basically). However, in order to do this, I must store the encryption key within the .NET assembly so it is able to encrypt and decrypt these files. Being aware of tools like Red Gate's .NET Reflector which can pull my key right out, I get a feeling that this is not a very safe way of doing it... are there any best practices to doing this?

  • Does mcrypt support asymmetric encryption?

    - by bryanagee
I want to use asymmetric encryption of headers in RESTful requests to verify the identity of the system sending the request: i e System A encrypts it's name, timestamp, and the service name using it's public key in a request to System B. System B then uses the public key of System A to decrypt, proving the authenticity of the request. 1) Does php-mcrypt support this? 2) Has anyone benchmarked this type of operation?

  • Public Private Key Encryption Tutorials

    - by Jake M
Do you know of a tutorial that demonstrates Public Private Key encryption(PPKE) in C++ or C? I am trying to learn how it works and eventually use Crypto++ to create my own encryptions using public private keys. Maybe theres a Crypto++ PPKE tutorial? Maybe someone can explain the relationship(if any) between the public and private keys? Could anyone suggest some very simple public and private key values I could use(like 'char*32','char/32') to create my simple PPKE program to understand the concept?

  • Symmetric Encryption: Performance Questions

    - by cam
Does the performance of a symmetric encryption algorithm depend on the amount of data being encrypted? Suppose I have about 1000 bytes I need to send over the network rapidly, is it better to encrypt 50 bytes of data 20 times, or 1000 bytes at once? Which will be faster? Does it depend on the algorithm used? If so, what's the highest performing, most secure algorithm for amounts of data under 512 bytes?

  • Basic question about encryption - what exactly are keys?

    - by Tomas
Hi, I was browsing and found good articles about encryption. However, none of them described why the key lenght is important and what exactly the key is used for. My guess is that could work this way: 0101001101010101010 Key: 01010010101010010101 //the longer the key, the longer unique sequence XOR or smth: //result Is this at least a bit how it works or I am missing something? Thanks

  • What are the PHP "encryption" functions?

    - by Rob
Looking for built in encryption functions, not to hide the string from the clever programmer, but instead just to obfuscate it a bit. Looking for functions such as str_rot13 and base64_encode, but I can't seem to locate any. Surely there are more?

  • Picking encryption cipher for mcrypt

    - by Autolycus
I have few questions about this code: <?php $iv_size = mcrypt_get_iv_size(MCRYPT_RIJNDAEL_256, MCRYPT_MODE_ECB); $iv = mcrypt_create_iv($iv_size, MCRYPT_RAND); $key = "This is a very secret key"; $text = file_get_contents('path/to/your/file'); echo strlen($text) . "\n"; $crypttext = mcrypt_encrypt(MCRYPT_RIJNDAEL_256, $key, $text, MCRYPT_MODE_ECB, $iv); file_put_contents('path/to/your/file', $crypttext); ?> It encrypts the file just fine, however it adds additional nulls at the end, so if I encrypt: a test string is this one and here is a new line once decrypted becomes: a test string is this one and here is a new line 000000000000000 What's going on? Second, is MCRYPT_RIJNDAEL_256 compatible with AES-128? Finally, how would I let another party decrypt a file I've encrypted? They would need to know which encryption was used and I am not sure what to tell them.

  • Decrypting “long” message encrypted with RSA java

    - by Denis
Hi this is the same question, that was asked two years ago: Java/JCE: Decrypting “long” message encrypted with RSA I had a large byte array and rsa keypair, initiated by value 1024. Using rsa encryption and the specified size of the key is strong requirement, I can't change it. So I can't use symmetric encryption with asymetric encryption symmetric key. I can't use any other keys. I had a byte array and need ciphered byte array to be returned. I wonder if there is any ready tool, that can manage with this problem? Sorry for such an amateurish question, but I really need a help.

  • AES encryption/decryption java bouncy castle explanation?

    - by Programmer0
    Can someone please explain what this program is doing pointing out some of the major points? I'm looking at the code and I'm completely lost. I just need explanation on the encryption/decryption phases. I think it generates an AES 192 key at one point but I'm not 100% sure. I'm not sure what the byte/ivBytes are used for either. import java.security.Key; import javax.crypto.Cipher; import javax.crypto.KeyGenerator; import javax.crypto.spec.IvParameterSpec; public class RandomKey { public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception { byte[] input = new byte[] { 0x00, 0x01, 0x02, 0x03, 0x04, 0x05, 0x06, 0x07, 0x08, 0x09, 0x0a, 0x0b, 0x0c, 0x0d, 0x0e, 0x0f, 0x00, 0x01, 0x02, 0x03, 0x04, 0x05, 0x06, 0x07 }; byte[] ivBytes = new byte[] { 0x00, 0x00, 0x00, 0x01, 0x04, 0x05, 0x06, 0x07, 0x00, 0x00, 0x00, 0x00, 0x00, 0x00, 0x00, 0x01 }; //initializing a new initialization vector IvParameterSpec ivSpec = new IvParameterSpec(ivBytes); //what does this actually do? Cipher cipher = Cipher.getInstance("AES/CTR/NoPadding", "BC"); //what does this do? KeyGenerator generator = KeyGenerator.getInstance("AES","BC"); //I assume this generates a key size of 192 bits generator.init(192); //does this generate a random key? Key encryptKey = generator.generateKey(); System.out.println("input: " +toHex(input)); //encryption phase cipher.init(Cipher.ENCRYPT_MODE, encryptKey, ivSpec); //what is this doing? byte[] cipherText = new byte[cipher.getOutputSize(input.length)]; //what is this doing? int ctLength = cipher.update(input, 0, input.length, cipherText,0); //getting the cipher text length i assume? ctLength += cipher.doFinal (cipherText, ctLength ); System.out.println ("Cipher: " +toHex(cipherText) + " bytes: " + ctLength); //decryption phase cipher.init(Cipher.DECRYPT_MODE, encryptKey, ivSpec); //storing the ciphertext in plaintext i'm assuming? byte[] plainText = new byte[cipher.getOutputSize(ctLength)]; int ptLength = cipher.update(cipherText, 0, ctLength, plainText, 0); //getting plaintextLength i think? ptLength= cipher.doFinal (plainText, ptLength); System.out.println("plain: " + toHex(plainText, ptLength)); } private static String digits = "0123456789abcdef"; public static String toHex(byte[] data, int length) { StringBuffer buf = new StringBuffer(); for (int i=0; i!= length; i++) { int v = data[i] & 0xff; buf.append(digits.charAt(v >>4)); buf.append(digits.charAt(v & 0xf)); } return buf.toString(); } public static String toHex(byte[] data) { return toHex(data, data.length); } }

  • Windows Server - share files without access for administrator

    - by Pawel
We have a MS Windows Server 2008 R8 based server that is administrated by our IT department. We would like to achieve two things simultaneously: A folder on the server, containing several thousand files (new files added frequently) that is accessible to some ActiveDirectory users (e.g. board of directors) but is not accessible by IT department employees IT department employees still maintain rights to administrate the server, including installing new software and services We already checked some solutions: Using NTFS access rights. Unfortunately IT (members of "Administrators" group) can set themselves as new owners of the files and change the permissions so that they gain access to the files. Enabling EFS. Unfortunately even if you do not allow IT to access files, they still can disable EFS completely because they have administrative rights. Moreover as far as I know you have to manually add permissions for all users but the owner for each new file - very inconvenient. Creating a new role for the IT department that has all the privileges apart from taking ownership of files. Unfortunately if you're not a member of the Administrators group, you cannot install new software, no matter what privileges you add to the role. TrueCrypt - nice free encryption software, but with poor sharing capabilities. You can either mount an encryption container on the server (and then IT has access to its contents) or you mount them locally but only one user can mount it for writing. AxCrypt - free encryption software that enables file-by-file encryption on the server. There are some disadvantages though - you have to manually encrypt each new file added. The files have their extensions changes. You can only set one password for all files (so all users have to know this one password). Any other ideas? Our budget is limited so enterprise-class software from Symantec or PGP would probably be not an option.

  • Archiver Securing SQLite Data without using Encryption on iPhone

    - by Redrocks
I'm developing an iphone app that uses Core Data with a SQLite data store and lots of images in the resource bundle. I want a "simple" way to obfuscate the file structure of the SQLite database and the image files to prevent the casual hacker/unscrupulous developer from gaining access to them. When the app is deployed, the database file and image files would be obfuscated. Upon launching the app it would read in and un-obfuscate the database file, write the un-obfuscated version to the users "tmp" directory for use by core data, and read/un-obfuscate image files as needed. I'd like to apply a simple algorithm to the files that would somehow scramble/manipulate the file data so that the sqlite database data isn't discernible when the db is opened in a text editor and so that neither is recognized by other applications (SQLite Manager, Photoshop, etc.) It seems, from the information I've read, that I could use NSFileManager, NSKeyedArchiver, and NSData to accomplish this but I'm not sure how to proceed. Been developing software for many years but I'm new to everything CocoaTouch, Mac and iPhone. Also never had to secure/encrypt my data so this is new. Any thoughts, suggestions, or links to solutions are appreciated.
