• Making XNA Play Nice With 3DS Max, Boundiing Spheres

  I'm using 3DS Max 2010 with the KW x-porter plugin, which outputs a .X file (just downloaded the very latest version). Note, that models I make in Milkshape don't seem to be having these problems. I've also tried to export an FBX file from 3DS Max 2010 and have been getting similar results. What are your suggestions in terms of exporting *.3DS models to a workable XNA form? What tools do you use?. • Black screen after installing ubuntu 11.10 on new pc

  Could anyone troubleshoot me please; After installing ubuntu on my fresh desktop, the ubuntu loading screen shortly appears and then I get a black screen and cannot access the login screen. When booting in failsafe modus, i get a message that ubuntu failed to load failsafe video drivers. I have a radeon 6850 video card and am able to start ubuntu live session. So I guess it loads the wrong drivers upon booting from hd. I remember a file in which you could change which drivers it should load, but forgot the exact location. Could this solve my problem (or another solution)

• Cycles through black screen on login after changing password

  On my laptop, I forgot the password to my Ubuntu partition, so I logged into the root command shell on the recovery start up option in GRUB so that I could change the password. On my first attempt to change my user password, I got this error: root@username-PC:~# passwd username (*not my actual user name*) Enter new UNIX password: Retype new UNIX password: passwd: Authentication token manipulation error passwd: password unchanged After doing some research, I discovered that I was stuck as read only on the file system, so I ran the following command to remount the file partition as read/write: mount -rw -o remount / Afterwards, I change my user password using passwd and it was changed successfully. I restarted my laptop and tried to login using the new password but the only thing that happened was after entering my password it flashed to a black screen with some text that I couldn't make out except for "Ubuntu 12.04" then another black screen half a second later, and finally back to the login screen. Repeated attempts to login results in only this action.

I found the way to change the modem from usb storage mode to modem mode and I can use my modem. But I forgot the instructions. I don't know the modem's name. It's chinese modem. But here is vendor/product id ....05 Qualcomm, Inc. Mass Storage Device and I think the target vendor/product id is ..... 05. So help me to change. I don't want to replace modem. pls. • How to Export Email "Sent" Folder?

  A client had her web site and email hosted at "company A". She was switching to "company B" but didn't want to lose her email. I set up a Gmail account, POPed into her webmail account, and pulled the entire inbox into Gmail (for later transfer to her new host). But I forgot about the "sent" folder. Although the hosting plan is still up and running, she changed her domain record to point to the new host. So I can't access the old webmail account via POP or IMAP because the email address needed for authentication now resolves to the new host. Is there any way I can get the contents of the sent folder without having to do a "forward" one message at a time (there are hundreds)?

• Visual Studio 2010: Fun with extensions

  One of the powerful things that has come into Visual Studio over the last few years has been joy of extensions. With 2010 there seems to be even more!! Of course teaching old dogs like myself new tricks always takes time but interestingly enough some of the rules I learnt early in my working life over 30 years ago still hold true!! A derivation of one that was knocked into during my engineering apprenticeship and associated exams was RTFQ! Read the ‘flippin’ question. (I replaced the original ‘F’ with a more palatable version here!). Today I forgot that rule and didn’t RTFI (I being instructions) and spent a fruitless hour wondering why my Entity Framework POCO generator never appeared in the new project template list when I wanted to add it!! It was simple of course – I had only installed the Entity Framework POCO generator for web sites and not building a web project meant it would never appear!!! A quick look again I found the ‘other’ extension that supported my project type! So RTFI!!

What's the difference between the two and how can I convert the above to take into account the elapsedtime? (I'm using XNA - do I use ElapsedTime.TotalSeconds or TotalMilliseconds)? • How do I reset my Ubuntu 12.10 password?

  So my sister gave me this old laptop that has Ubuntu 12.10. The problem is that she has a username administrator password, but she forgot it. I've tried using GRUB and launching recovery mode and using the root shell prompt. And I type the "passwd username" command, and it tells me to type the new UNIX password, but when I try to type a new password it's like my keyboard doesn't even work. It types nothing. What's the problem? Why does my keyboard not type anything when I try to reset the UNIX password? It always works perfectly fine. I'm grateful for any help, thank you.

  I've got TortoiseBazaar installed on my Windows laptop, and I was trying to branch a repository hosted on my VPS to another directory on my VPS, and I got this lovely error: bzr: ERROR: Unknown branch format: 'Bazaar Branch Format 7 (needs bzr 1.6) That lead me to this mailing-list archive: http://osdir.com/ml/bazaar/2009-06/msg00692.html Then I tried following the instructions here to add the Launchpad PPA to /etc/apt/sources.list, but they forgot to mention that you need to do this: sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com D702BF6B8C6C1EFD Which I found out about here after I got this error: GPG error: http://ppa.launchpad.net hardy Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY D702BF6B8C6C1EFD after modifying my /etc/apt/sources.list and running: sudo apt-get update Just thought I'd save someone else some pain. And of course, don't forget to uninstall the version of bzr that wouldn't play ball in the first place.

• How to play VOB files that were inside a DVD disc?

  I just downloaded a DVD which is for a movie. After uncompressing the DVD file I see .VOB, .IFO and .BUP files. If I open the first .VOB file it shows me the DVD menu but I can't interact with it. So, my question is... is Totem able to play those kind of files? If so, how can I achieve that? What other app could I use in order to reproduce those files? Edit Using VLC didn't work neither. I forgot to mention I have already tried that. Let me rephrase: if I open the first video file it shows the DVD menu, BUT I can't interact with it.

  I encountered this issue a couple times during my recent project, every time I forgot what actually cause the issue. Therefore, I decide to write a quick blog post to make sure I can identify the issue quickly. Problem: Run unit test using a test runner and received a Unit Test Runner failed to load test assembly exception. Analysis: Basically, I have changed some code and start the test runner to run tests. The same dll have already been deployed to GAC. So the test runner actually tries to use the old version of the assembly thus could not load the assembly. Solution: Deploy the current version of dll to the GAC and re-run your test, it works like a charm.

• How to open files which are located in VirtualBox's Guest Machine from Netbeans of Host Machine

  I have Ubuntu 10.04 installed in my Host Machine and it has VirtualBox. I have Guest Machine wich runs Ubuntu 10.10. I have NetBeans installed in Host Machine and need to open my project files which are located in Guest Machine. The reason I need it is because in my working place I have not access to install any applications, that is why I have Guest Machine where I have Web Server installed on it and also I have one web application that I am developing. I need to open that web application files from Guest Machine's Netbeans in order to modify/create new files for my web application. I have configured SSH server of Guest Machine and added port redirection in the VirtualBox so that now I can connect to it from Host Machine. But I could not find any way to open those files from Netbeans. Could anybody give me advice about how can I do that please? UPDATE I forgot to say that I don't want to use SharedFolders.

• How do I cancel a time-delayed screenshot?

  I'm using the default screenshot application that comes with Ubuntu gnome-screenshot When I was using it earlier to take screenshots of the lock screen I had set a long time delay, but forgot to change it back after I'd finished. When I next took a timed screenshot I had to wait a long time for it to take because the delay was still set so long. Clicking the icon to relaunch the screenshot application has no effect whilst the timer is in effect, I imagine there is probably a simple terminal command to shut down an application, but I don't know it! Is there a way to do this?

  I plan to learn Ruby on Rails and would like to code in my development box which runs on Windows XP. I have Ubuntu Server (forgot the version ;p) running as my web server with Rails installed on it. I have been considering using Vim as my text editor of choice in XP but would like to know any text editor and accompanying shell/FTP/Putty/SSH (or whatever you may call it) program that can access those files in my Ubuntu server. It is better if the shell can be called or is bundled inside the text editor. I would like to know your combinations (text editor + shell) and your experiences on it when you were able to develop your Rails projects on that combination. Cheers!

• Why does quickly package --extras fail (where quickly package doesn't)?

  When I attempt to use quickly package --verbose --extras on my application I get these errors at the end: sed -i "s|__soundboard_data_directory__ =.*|__soundboard_data_directory__ = '/opt/extras.ubuntu.com/soundboard/share/soundboard/'|" debian/soundboard/opt/extras.ubuntu.com/soundboard/soundboard*/soundboardconfig.py sed: can't read debian/soundboard/opt/extras.ubuntu.com/soundboard/soundboard*/soundboardconfig.py: No such file or directory make[1]: *** [override_dh_install] Error 2 make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/pablo/soundboard' make: *** [binary] Error 2 dpkg-buildpackage: error: fakeroot debian/rules binary gave error exit status 2 I haven't a clue what is wrong here. When I run package --extras on a clean template it runs fine. soundboardconfig.py is an unmodified appnameconfig.py the template makes. I'm not sure if my full source code is needed for this or not, but can be provided. EDIT: Forgot to mention quickly package creates a working package, only --extras fails.

• Checking whether php script was resolved by optimal way

  Can anybody give some advise how to check the arbitrary php code on optimal solution. For example I create a simple algorithm and sent it on the special resource.   There are three phases of collision detection. Broadphase: It loops between all objecs that can interact, false positives are allowed, if it would speed up the loop. Narrowphase: Determines whether they collide, and sometimes, how, no false positives Resolution: Resolves the collision. The question I'm asking is about the narrowphase. There are multiple algorithms, differing in complexity and accuracy. Hitbox intersection: This is an a-posteriori algorithm, that has the lowest complexity, but also isn't too accurate, Color intersection: Hitbox intersection for each pixel, a-posteriori, pixel-perfect, not accuratee in regards to time, higher complexity Separating axis theorem: This is used more often, accurate for triangles, however, a-posteriori, as it can't find the edge, when taking last frame in account, it's more stable Linear raycasting: A-priori algorithm, useful for semi-realistic-looking physics, finds the intersection point, even more accurate than SAT, but with more complexity Spline interpolation: A-priori, even more accurate than linear rays, even more coplexity. There are probably many more that I've forgot about. The question is, in when is it better to use SAT, when rays, when splines, and whether there is anything better.

• Reset Windows Password with Ubuntu Live CD

  A friend brought me his PC with Windows Vista to reset the user password because he didn't use it for a long while and forgot his password. So I found a tutorial on how to reset the password by using a Ubuntu Live CD and the software chntpw. After I installed this software I mounted the SYSTEM partition by opening it with the file explorer. It is now available at /media/SYSTEM/ The tutorial says I have to open the file /windows/system32/config/sam with chntpw and reset the password with chntpw -u USERNAME sam After I did this it didn't show me any errors. So I unmounted the partition and rebooted the PC with the installed Windows Vista. It is still locked with the old password. Did I do any mistakes or is there an other way to reset the password?

• Unable to install Nvidia drivers

  a few days ago I installed ubuntu 11.10 on my friends computer. Despite all of our efforts we are unable to open the default unity and it will only open the 2d interface. I have been told in the IRC chat room that we need to install the graphics card drivers(nvidia geforce 420.) When I check the additional drivers app it doesn't show any to install. I tried installing the ones from the nvidia website but no luck, I also forgot to mention. I don't know if it means anything but he has a 64 bit computer and it is ubuntu 11.10 64bit.

• Should I put an app I wrote on my résumé even if it has low ratings?

  Last summer I wrote an iPhone app for the Toronto Film Festival. The development was pretty rushed, and the design goals were changed multiple times. In particular, the central film list view controller was redesigned three times in the week before launch. I forgot to update one of my functions to match the changed design, and the app shipped with a serious bug. While the app was fairly popular, this bug crippled the app and it got a lot of poor reviews. I fixed the bug as soon as I got a crash report, but it got stuck in the iTunes review process for the duration of the film festival. Should I put this app on my résumé? The app has poor ratings and most of the reviews mention crashes, but it's also the only work experience I have. Additionally, how should I approach this topic in an interview? • Terminal as desktop background instead of wallper

  I have come to conclusion that all my needs from nautilus is satisfied with terminal and last file manager. It also dismisses the need for multiple nautilus instances, which makes mess when I forgot how I meant to use different workspaces. The next step for my simplification would be to get rid of any possibility to open nautilus. Also I thought that my interaction with computer is file centred, therefore it makes sense to leave file manager in background of applications. Are there any ways to make terminal as desktop background with which I could interact?
