• Setup for NEW HDD?

  Building my FIRST computer. Will start with at least - one HDD, I purchased a WD SATA HDD a 10,000RPM VelociRaptor 500GB. I have read that if you use one of the settings, can't remember what it's called, that it would make an HDD rund at IDE speeds??? Could I or should I run it in RAID instead? Is RAID only for more than one HDD/ssd? I would like to get like a 64GB SSD later to maybe speed things up working together. Thanks

• Installed 11.10 on shared drive, when other partition mounted, HDD shown full

  I just partitioned a 500GB HDD 50%-50%. I installed ubuntu 11.10 on one half and copied a load of files onto the other. When I don't mount the other partition, it shows I have used 12.1GB and have about 240GB free. The second I mount the other partition, I can't copy any files over and get a disk full message. There is about 10-20GB Free on the other partition. Am I doing something wrong or is this a bug?

• Computer won't start when connecting SATA HDD

  I just bough a new HDD some time ago and recently i bought another SATA cable to have both HDDs connected at the same time, to transfer all the files from the older one to the newer. When i connected both of them, the computer started working, i tapped F2 to go to bios to make sure it was detected, and then after 5-10 seconds the computer instantly shut down. After this incident, my computer won't start at all when connecting the SATA power supply to the old HDD. If i connect only my new drive, it works without any problem. If i connect only my old drive, or both the old drive and the new one, and then push on the power button, the cpu fan simply rotates about 5 degrees and then stops.. and that's it, the computer doesn't start, and no sound from the pc speaker either. Is there any way to recover my files from the old HDD and transfer them to my new one? I do not want to use the old HDD any more, i only need to save all my files.

• Mac HDD Is Encrypted

  I have the hard drive from a PowerMac G5, which was my old computer before it died and I upgraded to Ubuntu Studio. The hard drive its self still works well, but on Ubuntu I can't access most of the files. I plugged it into my MacBook Air and changed some of the perms on some of the folders as a test. This worked for a few, but for others, I was getting the same message Cannot access folder. Access denied. I would like to use this as an external HDD (I have a case and everything), but it's kind of pointless if I can't access the folders that I want. After looking around for a couple of hours, I couldn't find anything that actually gave me an answer. I would like to know if: Anybody else has come upon this problem, If so, have you found a solution? and, What is it?

• Low disk space: home/user folder occupies 94GB

  I am low on disk space and when I check the Disk Usage analyzer (using gksudo baobab) it indicates that my home/teddy folder is using 94GB, but when I browse through its contents I can only account for about 1gb of that usage. I've tried sudo apt-get clean and deleting the cached package files from Synaptic Package Manager, emptied trash but that has not changed the amount of free space I have. It seems similar to this problem But using the root disk usage analyzer has not given any insight into what is consuming so much space. Any ideas?

• Often "running in low-graphics mode” with NVidia GeForce GT 430

  Often (every fifth time perhaps) when I turn on my system, I'm greeted with the "running in low-graphics mode” window. Sometimes all I have to do is reboot and the system will start correctly, sometimes there can be a longer series of failed starts. If I go to the terminal and log in, I can run startx and my desktop will appear without problems. At the end of /var/log/Xorg.1.log I see this: [ 77.459] (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration. [ 77.459] Fatal server error: [ 77.459] no screens found [ 77.459] Please consult the The X.Org Foundation support at http://wiki.x.org Is the NVidia creating the appropriate XOrg configuration dynamically on every boot, or what could explain that the configuration error above only occurs sometimes?

• Wireless iwconfig rate auto too low

  Hi, left to its own devices my wireless connects at too low a speed. I have a 20meg internet connection and my wireless is slowing it down to like 3meg. When I reboot into windows it's fine. When I run iwconfig eth1 rate 24M or even 48M the connection is much faster and runs fine, why won't it automatically go higher? Is this the fault of the driver? I am running Broadcom's driver compiled from source. Would adding iwconfig eth1 rate 24M to rc.local be the right way to force it at boot? • Laptop battery fails to change unless power level very low, and then dicharges quickly

  I've had my laptop for about 5-6 weeks. Its a DELL Alienware M15x and I have never replaced the battery,such as http://www.pcbatteria.com/dell-alienware-m15x-series.html. The past 3 weeks or so the battery can only charge when the computer is off or in a low power state. If its on and plugged in it will still lose its charge unless its already at 100%. On a full charge without being plugged in it only holds its charge for about 1 hour on "power saver". This makes it extremely hard to use it as a portable device so i'm trying to find a way to troubleshoot the problem without having to buy a new battery or laptop. Unfortunately I need it for the next few months in some of my classes so its kind of urgent. Thanks for your help!

• Low graphics mode on Ubuntu 12.04 with Intel Graphics

  When I boot, my computer just tells me it can't detect graphic card (or something else) settings and it has to use the low graphics mode. Then it gives me four choices, but doesn't let me choose any of them. I can get my computer to boot by going to some sort of terminal mode and then typing sudo gdm. The other graphics manager I have is lightdm. I originally had the nVidia propriety driver, and I've tried bumblebee. Mobile Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500M is my graphics card. Is there any way to fix this so I can use lightdm again?

• Low "time on site" and high bounce-rate in Japan

  I'm seeing a substantially low "time on site" and high bounce rate from visitors coming from Japan. Comparing to other states, even in languages I don't speak, the stats are still dramatically worse. So I assume there's something specific to that nation, that I should understand in order to make their experience better. The content they are seeing is in Japanese, and I've also translated the head-lines, which to my surprise didn't make stats look better. The site doesn't have a mobile version, so I assume that might be part of the problem. Wanted to hear from your experience what other reasons might there be that are specific for Japan. UPDATE: The content itself was in Japanese all the time, that's the reason it attracts users from Japan. The head-lines were in English, so I only changed them.

• Switching to Kubuntu results in low graphics mode

  I looked at some screen shots of Kubuntu and I liked it so I went to Synaptic and installed the kubuntu-desktop package and set my desktop window manager to kde and rebooted. After reboot, I saw Kubuntu splash screen then this message; running in Low Graphical Mode. Then I was not able to dismiss the message because my mouse did not work Seemingly How to Geek had the same problem http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/ubuntu/install-kde-kubuntu-on-ubuntu/ . You will probably see that your xorg.conf file was backed up to xorg.conf.1 during the ?KDE / Kubuntu installation. Just copy the xorg.conf.1 back to xorg.conf, reboot, and everything should be fine. I also tried to do that by booting into recovery mode and then droping onto the shell. But it would not let me rename, came up with some error.

  I recently upgraded to 12.10 (fresh install). Now I am facing wierd problem, randomly for when I boot I get a message of low graphics. For now, I switch to console using alt+f1 and then rebboot. On reboot, I select recovery mode, allow system to boot and then again reboot. Now I select normal mode and my graphics loads smoothly. Could you please tell me what could e the issue? I have Dell inspiron 5230 with Intel 4000 onboard graphics. --Amey

• How to control / disable low level battery on bluetooth mouse

  I have a little problem with my Kesington Bluetooth Mouse on Ubuntu 12.10. Ubuntu 12.10 considers my bluetooth mouse battery as a system battery as if it was the main laptop battery (so I have two on the battery indicator, the main and the bluetooth one). When it runs low level, near to die, battery, my laptop acts as if it was the main battery and I must quickly stop bluetooth and continue on the touchpad if I want to work. Can anyone help me? Maybe I prefer to disable the battery control over the mouse, I don't care about it, I know it is fully charged, but Ubuntu always starts on 33% or less, I just want to work with it and when it will be battery-off I will recharge the batteries.   When I try to log onto Ubuntu, I get a notice that reads: The system is running in low graphics mode. I searched for a solution and there are a slew of answers. However, many of them seem to suggest reinstalling different things. After pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 and getting to a terminal, I attempt commands like sudo apt-get install example. Upon doing so I get notices that say things such as could not resolve host which I am assuming means I'm not connected to the Internet. Since I can not connect to the Internet, none of these responses are helpful to me. What can I do?

  Since last week, my Ubuntu 13.04 installation started booting up in low graphics mode out of nowhere. I tried a number of solutions found on this site but to no avail. The other night, I decided to upgrade to 13.10 to see if the issue would be fixed in the process. Since then, the system starts fine, but when I login to my account, I'm just presented with a black screen. I switched to the terminal and did any necessary updates, but to no avail. • Broadcom 4313 Signal strength very low on an HP Pavilion dv4

  I have a HP pavilion dv4 4141US laptop running fresh ubuntu 11.10. This laptop has a broadcom 4313gn chipset for the network card. The network card is using the brcmsmac driver. Which, I heard else where on askUbuntu that its the best driver to be using for this card. I can connect to my network, however I have extremely low network signal. Right now I am right in front of the router, and I only get 72%. If i go to the room directly behind the router's wall, i get no signal, where as with windows 7 I get a nice 70% percent. UPDATE: I use WEP at home and an open wireless connection at work. Both have same result. Both are completely different routers. Also you G What can i do?

• Unstable Wifi and Spontaneous Low-graphic Error with Pavilion DV4

  I've been having numerous problems with connectivity through WiFi. It had been working for a few days and now it doesn't.   Dijkstra and A* are all nice and popular but what kind of algorithm was used in Warcraft 1 for pathfinding? I remember that the enemy could get trapped in bowl-like caverns which means there were (most probably) no full-path calculations from "start to end". If I recall correctly, the algorithm could be something like this: A) Move towards enemy until success or hitting a wall B) If blocked by a wall, follow the wall until you can move towards the enemy without being blocked and then do A) But I'd like to know, if someone knows :-) [edit] As explained to Byte56, I'm searching for a low cpu/mem/mem-bandwidth algo and wanted to know if Warcraft had some special secrets to deliver (never seen that kind of pathfinding elsewhere), I hope that that is more concordant with the stackexchange rules.

• HD 6770M low graphics mode after update (AGAIN)

  I have Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (re)installed on this laptop: I've also installed the fglrx-drivers for my ATI card (using apt-get),it appeared to work fine,that is until i updated my distro. Once again i got the "low graphics mode" error when i booted into the new kernel,booting in the old kernel works fine however. When i look into the logs i see "no screen found". This is the second time i install Ubuntu and the second time i run into problems with my graphics. Reinstalling isn't a solution since the problem keeps comming back. My question now is: does anyone know a REAL solution for this issue ar at least knows what's causing it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• lightdm.conf content erased, now stuck in low graphics mode

  This evening I was attempting to disable the guest account and something went awry. Currently on boot Ubuntu enters low graphics mode. No specific error report. What did I do? Before this error occurred I added a line of code in lightdm.conf to disable the guest account. I think I may have accidentally erased the contents of lightdm.conf. Not entirely sure. I troubleshooted for the past hour using various suggestions from other Questions to no avail.
