• How do you keep down your urge to learn many things [closed]

  One of the difficulties i have is to lower my urge to learn new things (Languages, tools, frameworks etc.). I know it's good to stay the bleeding edge, but at the same time i want to learn things properly. I really see that i need to strike a balance between staying bleeding edge and knowing things properly. For example: Before choosing Arch (Desktop), Ubuntu(Server) and Knoppix(Portable) -- depending on situation -- as favourite distributions. Virtually i have tried all popular linux distributions. You name any popular linux (Redhat, Ubuntu, Arch, Suse, Knoppix, Slax, Slackware) i have tried it for some time. In fact i have spent few years experimenting the operating systems. Before choosing Python, Javascript (nodejs). I have tried all the languages i cameacross Scala, Haskell, Erlang, Ruby, Python, Perl, Scheme. Same applies for database. All popular db RDBMS (Oracle, Mysql, Postgres, SQLite[Favourite] etc) and NoSQL (Mongo, Couch, Neo4j etc.). Advantages i see: We get a overall picture of the technologies/tools/languages. It's useful to select the right tool for the job. We develop a taste and choose the One we like. Disadvantages: I feel that i spend somuch time and see a need to strike a balance. In summary, for e.g. If i see a blog post in HackerNews about CofeeScript i will try it out irrespective of what i am currently learning (Say Haskell). I switch back to learning Haskell, then again i see DART i check it out. And this continues.. Effectively i take more time to learn Haskell, but learnt about other new stuff on the way. The quetion i have is how do you strike a balance between staying bleeding edge and learning properly.

  We release a number of small plug-ins that go along with our software. Each plug-in allows our software to talk to a single manufactuer's hardware. I would like to devise a system for keeping track of plug-in releases. Example info that should be stored: Hardware manufacturer name 32-bit? 64-bit? both? What modes of operation does the hardware support? What versions of the manufacturer's driver have been tested with the plugin? Desirable properties of the system: Able to synchronize with version control software Stores data in human-readable text file (also good for differ tool) Free visual, spreadsheet-like editor available Able to do simple analysis like "What is the oldest plug-in?" I've got to imagine that someone else has tackled this problem already. Right now my best guess is XML/JSON with a visual editor, but I have been disappointed in the editors I've tried so far. I'd like to get input from some more experienced developers. Thanks!

• USB hub keep changing ports

  I have an external powered USB hub and I'm using gammu to send some SMSs, but every time the daemon connect to one specific modem, it has the port changed. Gammu is able to send just one SMS and after that the port is changed. I've already tried using: /dev/ttyUSB3 /dev/serial/by-path/pci-0000:00:0b.0-usb-0:3.4.3:1.0-port0 There is anything to do which will stop the ports to be changed or use any other fixed port? Thanks.

• How to Keep SEO Score from Dropping with Duplicate Content

  I'm hoping that someone has a solution for what I'm trying to accomplish. I'm working on a travel agency web site and there's a "Overview" section for each cruise line. These overviews are located on the index page for each cruise line. Here's my issue: The company is creating a search engine that includes details on each cruise line. Their write-ups on each cruise line are great, so I'd like to include the overview they created for each cruise line, rather than having to create all new ones. However, I don't want duplicating their content to negatively affect the SEO scores of the pages they originally put this content on. It's gong to duplicate, since each page that's dynamically generated by their search engine is going to include a section about the cruise line (where I'd want to place the overview). Question: Is there any way that I can include these overviews (ideally, copying the exact HTML that they've already implemented) without the search engines indexing those particular code sections? I'd want the rest of the search result pages to be indexed...just not the section of each page that contains this duplicate code. I saw something about using a span class named robots-nocontent in Yahoo (not sure if this also applies to Bing) and googleon / googleoff tags in Google. Is this the best solution? I'm open to any suggestions, thanks!

  Is there a way to force Microsoft Word 2010 to keep the last line of a paragraph with the next paragraph? An example of when this is relevant is when starting a block quote; it doesn't look good to have the block quote start at the top of a new page, particularly when it's introduced by a partial sentence, like this: "Lorem ipsum" is sample text widely used in the publishing industry, as the text has spacing roughly similar to that of English and therefore looks "normal" but unintelligible to an English reader's eye, allowing the reader to focus on design elements. It begins, Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Nam rhoncus laoreet risus, quis congue leo viverra congue. Suspendisse magna massa, viverra imperdiet est eu, ultrices volutpat lectus. Sed pulvinar est id risus lobortis venenatis. There shouldn't be a page break after "begins," because it looks like the sentence ends abruptly. "Keep lines together" won't work, because by definition we're talking about two paragraphs. "Keep with next" won't work if the first paragraph is larger than a couple of lines, because then you get an awkwardly large space at the bottom of a page. Manual line breaks obviously work, but only when the document is final, which is often less certain than it seems. I know WordPerfect has a feature called "block protect" that does this, but I have not found even an acceptable substitute in Word. I have played with style separators and hidden paragraph breaks, but to no avail. I would love a special character, kind of like the nonbreaking space or zero width optional space, that tells Word to move to the next page if the next paragraph would otherwise start the page. A macro would also be great, but I haven't been able to find a starting point (like how to detect where non-manual page breaks fall). Edit: It looks like "Keep with next" works this way in Word 2013, but I specifically need a fix that works in Word 2010.

• C# Windows Mobile 6.5 and TCP connections

  Hello, I am developing an application which makes a TCP connection out to our company server to pull down data and provide real-time data updates when the information changes. I am using the .NET Compact Framework for the development and the .NET Framework 3.5 (soon to update to 4.0) for the server-side TCP connection. I want to leave the connection open after the initial data is sent to the device from the server in order to keep the server in contact with the device should data updates need to be sent to the device. We already considered doing a WCF or connect/disconnect type of connection but we believe the overhead on the server for creating the session, transmitting and session cleanup would be unacceptable. (each device would be connecting every 60-90 seconds.) So, leaving the connection open is the best option. What I need to know is, when I leave the TCP connection open, do I need to manually transmit a heartbeat (and if so how do I do that with the .NET Compact Framework) or will the framework/stack do that for me? We have code that allows up to reconnect if the device gets disconnected (from network switching or a voice call) so that is handled. Thanks,

• How to keep Windows 7 from sleeping while scanning the PC.

  So, I've been using Microsoft Security Essentials lately. And it usually takes a couple hours or more for it to full scan my hard drive. Because of that, I commonly leave it scanning while I go do something else. Problem is: 10 minutes later, windows 7 goes to sleep, and the scan is (obviously) paused. That's What I'd like to stop happening. So far, the only way I've been able to avoid it was to create a power plan, and switch to it while away, to keep the PC from sleeping. Problem is that I have to keep switching power plans and I'd like the PC to be able to go to sleep in case MSE finishes scanning and I'm still not back. Maybe I'm just asking for too much, but I've been surprised by the users here plenty of times already. So let me know if you know how to keep the PC from sleeping while MSE is scanning. Thanks

  Hi All, I am biulding a client-server application where I have to implement a keepalive mechanism in order to detect that the client has crashed or not. I have separate threads on both client and server side. the client thread sends a "ping" then sleeps for 3 seconds, while the server reads the BufferedInput Stream and checks whether ping is received, if so it makes the ping counter eqauls zero, else it increments the counter by +1, the server thread then sleeps for 3 seconds, if the ping counter reaches 3, it daclares the client as dead. The problem is that when the server reads the input stream, its a blocking call, and it blocks untill the next ping is received, irrespective of how delayed it is, so the server never detects a missed ping. any suggestions, so that I can read the current value of the stream and it doesn't block if there is nothing on the incoming stream.   Hi all, I am completely new to javascript programming and I have a question that I didn't manage to find an answer for anywhere. I have recently put together a simple slideshow to view the photos remotely that I host on my home computer. This by itself works fine. The problem I run into is that when I'm viewing photos I don't interact with the hardware, which after some time causes the monitor to switch off. This is particularly annoying when watching photos on my mobile phone. My question is: is there a way to prevent this from happening? I am thinking in the direction of faking a mouse or other event every time I refresh the photo, but I have no clue how to do that and if it is possible. Any help is greatly appreciated!

• Web Server Scripting Hack to Maintain State and Keep a Domain Cookieless

  Hello, I am looking for a solution on a LAMP server to keep a site cookieless such as "example.com", where static content is served from "static.example.com", and with rules in place to rewrite requests for "www.example.com" to "example.com". I am really hoping to avoid setting up a cookieless domain for the static content due to an unanswered SEO concern with regards to CNAMEing to a CDN. Is there a way, (or safe hack), that can be implemented where a second domain such as "www.example2.com" is CNAMEd, aliased, or otherwise used with "example.com" to somehow trick a php application into maintaining state with a cookie dropped on "www.example2.com" therefore keeping all of "example.com" cookieless? If such a solution is feasible, what implications would exists with regards to SSL and cross-browser compatibility other than requiring users to accept cookies from 3rd party domains and possibly needing an additional SSL to keep the cookie secure? This is where the variable PT_FILESTOKEEP comes in. Whatever number this is set to thats the amount of backups I want to keep. All backups are time stamped so by ordering them by name DESC will give you the latest first. Can anyone please help me with the rest of the BASH script to add the clean up of files? My knowledge of BASH is lacking and I'm unable to piece together the code to do the rest.

• Outlook 2010 reminders keep popping up even if closed

  Today when I got to work and started my computers I got a event reminder for my last events last friday. I closed the reminder, but perhaps 10 minutes later it pops up again, and another 10 minutes later it popped up yet again. As the day is passing all my reminders for this day is added to the list of reminders that keep popping up 10 minutes after that they are closed. I've tried both the repair function in Windows Control Panel -- E-mail and the scanpst.exe program, but none of them solved the problem. I've tried outlook.exe /cleansniff and outlook.exe /cleanreminders, but that didn't help either. Reading on the net there seem to be some reports with this for reoccuring calendar events, but my affected events are one-timers. How can I get the closed reminders to stay closed? Update: I noticed that I have 282 drafts of the meetings that I keep getting reminders of.

  Alright, let's make this simple. I'm really contemplating performing a system refresh. What I've been looking for all over is if the process keeps some certain folders. Namely my Documents, Pictures, Videos, Downloads, and Desktop folders. There's some real valuable stuff in there, and I really want to know if refreshing my PC will keep these intact. Also, there is an application located at C:\Pesterchum that I would like to keep intact. Should I back it up, then copy it back into its original location after the refresh?   I use my email from my phone and my computer via IMAP. I want to set something up so that if I delete a message via my phone, my computer will still keep the message locally. For example, assume I leave my computer on, with a synchronize interval of 5 minutes. I want to be able to send something from my phone, wait 5 minutes to be sure my computer has downloaded the item from the Sent folder, then delete it from the IMAP sent folder via my phone, but have the computer at home keep it's copy. Is this possible with any readily available email clients out there? I have Thunderbird and Outlook at the moment, but would be willing to learn a new interface for this feature. How can I accomplish this?

• Process to replace motherboard and keep CPU

  My motherboard has been diagnosed with the Sandy Bridge issue (http://vip.asus.com/eservice/changeSandybridge_MB.aspx?slanguage=en-us) so I am asked by my reseller to send back my motherboard to have a new one compatible with the previous one. My problem is that I have a not cheap Intel CPU currently on it, with its standard heatsink/fan. I would obviously like to keep it to plug it on the new motherboard. I am quite woried about the thermal paste. I was planning to: Remove the CPU and the HSF together (I think they are sticked to each other). Try to separate the CPU and the HSF (I'm not sure how) Clean both of the surfaces When the new motherboard is here, put the CPU back on it. Have new thermal paste to put again on the CPU, put it on the CPU Add the HSF again Do you see any problem about this process? Recommendations? Is it possible to keep the CPU and the HSF together for the whole process or is it impossible to plug the CPU back on the new motherboard in this case? Thanks in advance for your answers. Olivier

• Best solution top keep data secure

  What is the simplest and most elegant way of storing a small amount of data in a reasonably secure way? I am not looking for ridiculous levels of advanced encryption (AES-256 is more than enough) and I am only looking to encrypt a small number of files. The files I wish to encrypt are mostly comprised of password lists and SSH keys for servers. Unfortunately it is impossible to keep track of ever changing passwords for my servers (and SSH keys) and so need to keep a list of the passwords. Obviously this list needs to be secure, and also portable (I work from multiple locations). At the moment, I use a 10MB encrypted disk image on my mac (std .dmg AES-256) and just mount it whenever I need access to the data. To my knowledge this is very secure and I am very happy using it. However, the data is not very portable. I would like to be able to access my data from other machines (especially ones running linux), and I am aware that there are quite a few issues trying to mount an encrypted .dmg on linux. An alternative I have considered is to create a tar archive containing the files and use gpg --symmetric to encrypt it, but this is not a very elegant solution as it requires gpg to be installed on every system. So, what over solutions exist, and which ones would you consider to be the most elegant? Ty

  Hi, I'm developing a web service with ASP.NET, is not an .asmx or WCF, it's a custom one, so I'm working with the Http classes (context, request, response, etc..). Session is disabled. I'm working with my own handler and module. I'd like to keep a object alive and accessible for the time the connection is alive. I mean, a request enters, I assign a DbCommand to it and that connection will use that command as long is doing things, when that connection is ended, the object should be disposed. I've thought, that I can add it to my IPrincipal implementation, then when the connection is authenticated in the module and the user retrieved, I can add that DbCommand to the IPrincipal, so I can retrieve it from wherever I want in the code, and after in the module EndRequest event, I can dispose it, but I don't know if there is a better approach to do this. What do you think? cheers
