  I am looking for a USB Thumbdrive / Flash drive encryption solution. I have searched the net but I have never come accross a solution which meets the following: Must handle at least 4GB volume If possible, fully portable (no install required required) Does not require admin rights in order to access/write encrypted files on the flash drive Does not corrupt data should the flash drive is removed from a USB port and the data is in a 'unencrypted' status Data is automatically encrypted if the flash drive is removed from a USB port and the data is in a 'unencrypted' status Portable apps must be able to run from the 'unencrypted' volume (in non-admin mode) PLEASE do not mention TrueCrypt as I am not considering (especially for wish list #3) Many thanks!   Last week I made 2 stops to my local game stores and spent a load of cash on a bunch of new retro games for my collection.  Here are the recent additions: NES - Mega Man 2 - The Adventures of Bayou Billy - Ducktales - Metal Gear - Super Mario Bros / Duck Hunt - Firestorm - Dragon's Lair - Bartman Meets Radioactive Man N64 - Superman 64 - Zelda: Ocarina of Time (in original box, box is in poor condition) Atari - Superman - Adventure - Donkey Kong - Raiders of the Lost Ark Dreamcast - Memory card with view screen - Space Channel 5 Genesis (all in case) - Jurassic Park - Sonic Spinball - Sonic the Hegehog 3 (missing manual) - Spiderman (also called Spiderman vs. The Kingpin) GameGear - Bart vs The Space Mutants Quite a large haul given it was all purchased in 2 days.  Although, Metal Gear I got for a great deal and almost considered buying their other copy simply to resale for more though I decided against it to let another lucky soul find it.  I may need to run over there again because I think they had TMNT 2 (NES) for around $6 and it usually sells for more than that.  I could have sworn I grabbed it and bought it but my receipt tells me differently. I also found my copy of Super Mario 3 and added that to my collection.  Unfortunately one of the corners of the label has begun to peel up pretty badly which sucks although it's still a good item for the collection. In other retro news, this weekend was Easter and while at my grandparents the cousins wanted to play on their NES which was not working.  Me being the retro NES nerd I am, grabbed a screw driver, some Windex, a few toothpicks, and a few cotton swabs and had it up and running under an hour (that includes eating dinner!).  The NES holds the games tighter, has a better connection, and works almost instantly.  I should do THAT for a living!

• Mini DisplayPort to DVI-D Dual Link up to 2560 * 1600

  I have a ThinkPad T530 with Mini DP++ and NVS 5400M, which are said to support 2560 * 1600 resolution. The display is Dell 3007WFP, which also supports 2560 * 1600. But, I have never seen any cables or adapters that can connect them with full support to 2560 * 1600. Do you have any idea? THANK YOU! In addition, I found that mDP++ means I can use a passive adapter. No need for active adapter which is much more expensive. This is the only one that meets my needs, but it is not sold in the US. And this one seems to be OK, but I am not sure because it says "2.5 Gbps per channel", which may not be enough.

• Is there a way to allow continuous scrolling in Adobe Reader?

  I am having to read through a MASSIVE (1000+ page) PDF specification in Adobe Reader X (version 10). It has always bugged me that if you scroll to the edge of a page, the Reader automatically jumps to the top of the next page. Is there away to cut this off so that when I reach the bottom of one page, the edge of the page meets the top of the next page and I can see a half-page of both the last and next page? I know that MS Word can and does behave this way. Can I change a setting to scroll the document in this manner in Adobe Reader?

• Set-and-forget Windows backup software with NAS-support?

  I am looking for set-and-forget backup software for Windows (Vista & 7, and if possible XP/2003). The idea is that it runs in the background on the clients, and does its thing towards a network-share. In case the HDD of one of these clients spontaneously combusts, all I want to have to do is: replace the drive, insert a USB-stick, boot from it, and restore the machine. It should support drives which use [ICH]-RAID. What are my options here? It looks like WHS meets all the requirements, but I am curious about my other options here.

• Are there any HTPC-optimized web browsers?

  Features that I would ideally include in "HTPC-optimized": Full-screen. Navigable using a remote or the keyboard arrows. Legible at couch distances. Or, to put it another way, imagine the design requirements for Hulu Desktop or XBMC or WMC, applied to a web browser. Opera on a Wii meets most of these criteria but not being HD wastes a lot of potential. If a single solution doesn't exist, is there some combination of Firefox add-ons that will get me there?

  I am looking for an enterprise user management system that meets these requirements: Delegated user administration: The group manager should be able to grant access to his supervised employees (without having to contact any administrator either to grant access or maybe create users). A group manager should be able to create other groups and restrict any permission he already has where he can add supervised employees. If a manager removes access to a supervised group, then all the subgroups will also lose access. Web based User Interface. LDAP interface to query users and groups (or may not exist at all if it is integrated in a single application). Do you know if there are any system that meet these requirements?

  When you take clips and turn them into computer playable files, whether .TS or .MOV or .MPG, .MP4, .VOB, etc., do you as the producer actually manually write into some field in a "Details" section of your video editor what the video length is, so that it can be read by the eventual user's video player? Or is this activity performed automatically by the video editor? I'm asking because: when a mouse is passed over a file line item in Windows 7 Shell (Windows Explorer) a little box is displayed where the mouse meets the file line item and provides simple name and size properties, one of which (if it's a media file) is run length. How does that figure get there into the file (later to be read be Windows or OS X)? Thanks for any info.

• Remote Access to MSSQL Database From 1&1 Hosting [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? 5 answers I just paid ($6 /month) for shared Windows hosting through 1&1 hosting. I was having trouble connecting to my database from home, so I sent an email to support. I received the following response: As we checked your concern here in our end, please be advised that due to limitation of Shared Hosting services, there is no option to connect the database to your SQL Management Studio or through Visual Studio. It is only possible for Dedicated Server package. You may only access the database using MyLittleAdmin at the Control Panel. A dedicated server is like $200 per month! What is the point of having database access only through a web console? I feel I am missing something here, or maybe the support agent is. Is there a way to access my MS SQL database on their servers through Visual Studio or SQL Management Studio from my machine? If not, is there a web host who allows this for less than $200 a month? EDIT: Marked as duplicate... I'm not asking for a list of web hosts, I'm asking how to remotely connect to my MSSQL database through 1&1's services.

• Free Hosting control panel

  I'm in the mid of researching for one of the best hosting control panels. The server I run is Ubuntu and I have some experience with ISPConfig 2 & 3. Since I haven't explored any others available, what are the recommended ones for an Ubuntu server? I asked because I find that there seems to be some disabling and modifications required for an Ubuntu server if I need to use ispconfig which causes the server to change its actual way of running. It's quite good though, but any more recommended ones ? Something more organic? which doesn't require much breaking and changing. I'm not asking for the simple one, I don't mind going extra mile to install a powerful one but just try sticking with most Ubuntu's conventions will be an ideal one for me. And of course, if there happens to be something that meets the requirement as mentioned "Ubuntu conventions" and also simple to install at the same time, that'd be a bonus. Thanks in advance.

• Utility to unmap a network drive when the screen saver starts

  I'm looking for a way to unmap network drives when the screen saver turns on. I have a few users that share an external, encrypted drive (Samba share, not windows) and they have a requirement to disconnect the drive mapping when the local machine is idle. I'd also like it to warn them if there are open files on the mapped drive, if possible. There is also a requirement to force the password to be reentered before mapping when the machine comes back from idle. Is there a Windows setting or utility out there in the wild that meets these requirements?

• Virtual PC and hardware-assisted virtualization (VT-x) problem

  I've installed Microsoft's Virtual PC on Windows 7, but when I try to start a virtual machine I get the following error message: '<Virtual machine name' could not be started because hardware-assisted virtualization is disabled. Please enable hardware virtualization in the BIOS settings and try again. If hardware virtualization settings is already enabled, you may have to disable Trusted Execution Technology (TXT) setting in BIOS or update the system BIOS. However, if I download and run the Hardware-Assisted Virtualization Detection Tool, it gives the following positive message: This computer is configured with hardware-assisted virtualization. This computer meets the processor requirements to run Windows Virtual PC. If this computer runs a supported edition of Windows® 7, you can install Windows Virtual PC. I've also used the MSR Walker in the third-party utility CrystalCPUID to examine MSR 0x3a on both processors on my system, and it's 0x5 (0x4 = VT enabled, 0x1 = VT lock), as expected. Does anyone have any ideas of what else to check? Thanks.

• Running Non-profit Web Applications on Cloud/Dedicated Hosting [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? I often times build web applications purely because I enjoy it. I like building useful tools or open source applications that don't come with a price tag. That being said, many of these applications can be quite complex requiring services beyond shared hosting (ex. specific PHP extensions). This leaves me with two options: Make the web application less complex and run on shared hosting. Fork out money for cloud or dedicated/VPS hosting. Considering the application is free (I don't make money off of it intentionally), the money for hosting comes out of my own pocket. I know I am not alone in this sticky situation. So the question is, what are the hosting options that provide more advanced features such as shell access via SSH, ability to install specific software/extensions (ex. if I wish to use a NoSQL DB such as Redis, MongoDB, or Cassandra), etc., at a free or low price point? I know free usually equates to bad/unreliable hosting -- but it's not always the case. There are a couple providers with free plans I know of: Amazon EC2 - Free micro-instance for 1 year AppHarbor - Cloud based .NET web application hosting w/ free plan. What else is available for hosting of non-profit applications?

I am starting to think about how the accompanying website will be hosted and would greatly appreciate some advice. Requirements: Domain #1 Information about the project itself (just pages and pictures). Documentation / Wiki Forums Download of project source (approx 3MB archive) Download of various themes and community contributed content (est. sizes 10KB ~ 512KB). Domain #2 Primary company website that offers products and services. This will be primarily pictures and pages. What kind of web hosting would be best for a project like this. I am working on a very tight budget and can only afford to spend up to £250 per year for hosting this. I was considering using some sort of VPS hosting. • Crop and Capture screen software/plugin for windows7

  Do you know a software or a plugin for a browser that lets me capture what's on my screen and crop it by ratio. I have a photoshop but I don't want to keep opening it just to capture a simple image and then croping it and then saving it. I want to quickly select a portion on my screen save it. If it's possible it lets me crop by ratio (eg. 4:3). Most that I will capture are in my browser, I use either Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox. But I can't find a good plugin that meets my requirements.. Thanks for your suggestion and Merry Xmas

• OS X Money Management Software

  I recently moved from Windows to a Mac, but I still have to keep Virtualbox and Windows installation on the machine to use Quicken. iBank looked promising, but I had problems importing my data from Quicken. I would switch to Mint if they would allow you to enter transactions manually, but the lack of that feature is a deal breaker. (I use Quicken primarily to track uncleared transactions, with the bonus of reporting on past spending.) Is there any other software I should try that will be able to import at least most of my old data from Quicken? Edit: For what it's worth, I never did find anything else. Quicken Essentials for Mac was released this year, but doesn't handle investments well from what I hear. I'm now on Quicken 2010 under XP running inside Virtualbox. It's not ideal, but it seems to be the only thing around right now that meets my needs.

The cycles produced by Sattolo's algorithm meet specification 2, but not specification 1 or 3. I've been working at creating an algorithm that meets these specifications, what I came up with was equivalent to Sattolo's algorithm. Does anyone have an algorithm for this problem?

• Blacklisting: IP's or domains?

  I am implementing a blacklisting system on my website that monitors contact forms for suspicious usage (both spam content and excessive frequency). When I find somebody / robot that meets my criteria for blacklisting, I want to send them to my DB as a blacklisted entity. My question is, should I blacklist them as an IP or as a domain? As far as I can see, blacklisting an IP is going to be far more effective, because I allow people to enter their email address in the form, and they can easily just change their domain on a regular basis. However, the downside is that if I blacklist an IP, I could potentially be blacklisting a large group of people who share an IP, when only one person is bad (ie - college campuses, coffee shops, etc). Is there a solution I'm missing?

• As an indie game dev, what processes are the best for soliciting feedback on my design/spec/idea? [closed]

  Background I have worked in a professional environment where the process usually goes like the following: Brain storm idea Solidify the game mechanics / design Iterate on design/idea to create a more solid experience Spec out the details of the design/idea Build it Step 3. is generally done with the stakeholders of the game (developers, designers, investors, publishers, etc) to reach an 'agreement' which meets the goals of all involved. Due to this process involving a series of often opposing and unique view points, creative solutions can surface through discussion / iteration. This is backed up by a process for collating the changes / new ideas, as well as structured time for discussion. As a (now) indie developer, I have to play the role of all the stakeholders (developers, designers, investors, publishers, etc), and often find myself too close to the idea / design to do more than minor changes, which I feel to be local maxima when it comes to the best result (I'm looking for the global maxima, of course). I have read that ideas / game designs / unique mechanics are merely multipliers of execution, and that keeping them secret is just silly. In sharing the idea with others outside the realm of my own thinking, I hope to replicate the influence other stakeholders have. I am struggling with the collation of changes / new ideas, and any kind of structured method of receiving feedback. My question: As an indie game developer, how and where can I share my ideas/designs to receive meaningful / constructive feedback? How can I successfully collate the feedback into a new iteration of the design? Are there any specialized websites, etc?

• raspberry pi for web programming/development

  I'm into web development and my machine (AMD Phenom II, 8G RAM) is running Ubuntu 13.04. I love my current setup but I kinda miss some of Windows software like MSOffice or Adobe suites, and running on Virtualbox doesn't feel as snappy for me.... So I'm thinking of buying a new cheap machine where I would install Linux and do my development work there and have my current machine run Windows. I just found this thing called Raspberry pi which is really cheap and requires 12v only (I think) which makes it good for downloading stuff overnight. So, does it make sense to buy Raspberry pi, make it my primary dev machine, Windows being the secondary (for Adobe and browser testing of course)? Basically, I want to know if Raspberry pi meets the following requirements: It should run ArchLinux Sublime Text 3 python ruby nginx nodejs Deluge or Transmission (well, maybe just those, no need for videos and music players)

• 2013 U.S. GAAP Financial Reporting Taxonomy Available for Public Review and Comment

  FASB recently released the proposed 2013 U.S. GAAP Reporting Taxonomy. Comments are due October 29, 2012 to be finalized and published early 2013.  The proposed 2013 U.S. GAAP taxonomy and instructions on how to submit comments are available at the FASB’s XBRL page. In previous blog entries, I talked about how Oracle Hyperion Disclosure Management supports the latest taxonomy, enabling financial managers to easily comply with the latest filing requirements. The taxonomy is a list of computer-readable tags in XBRL that allows companies to annotate the voluminous financial data that is included in typical long-form financial statements and related footnote disclosures. The tags allow computers to automatically search for, assemble, and process data so it can be readily accessed and analyzed by investors, analysts, journalists, and regulators. You do not have to have Oracle Hyperion Financial Management, used for consolidating financial results, to generate XBRL. You just need Oracle Hyperion Disclosure Management to generate XBRL instance documents from financial applications, such as Oracle E-Business Suite, Oracle PeopleSoft, Oracle JD Edwards EnterpriseOne, and Oracle Fusion General Ledger. To generate XBRL tags and complete SEC filings using your existing financial applications with Oracle Hyperion Disclosure Management, here are the steps: Download the XBRL taxonomy from the SEC or XBRL Website into Hyperion Disclosure Management to create a company taxonomy. Publish financial statements from the general ledger to Microsoft Excel or Microsoft Word. Create the SEC filing in the Microsoft programs and perform the XBRL tag mapping in Oracle Hyperion Disclosure Management. Ensure that the SEC filing meets XBRL and SEC EDGAR Filer Manual validation requirements. Validate and submit the company taxonomy and XBRL instance document to the SEC. • What should every programmer know about web development?

  What things should a programmer implementing the technical details of a web application before making the site public? If Jeff Atwood can forget about HttpOnly cookies, sitemaps, and cross-site request forgeries all in the same site, what important thing could I be forgetting as well? I'm thinking about this from a web developer's perspective, such that someone else is creating the actual design and content for the site. So while usability and content may be more important than the platform, you the programmer have little say in that. What you do need to worry about is that your implementation of the platform is stable, performs well, is secure, and meets any other business goals (like not cost too much, take too long to build, and rank as well with Google as the content supports). Think of this from the perspective of a developer who's done some work for intranet-type applications in a fairly trusted environment, and is about to have his first shot and putting out a potentially popular site for the entire big bad world wide web. Also, I'm looking for something more specific than just a vague "web standards" response. I mean, HTML, JavaScript, and CSS over HTTP are pretty much a given, especially when I've already specified that you're a professional web developer. So going beyond that, Which standards? In what circumstances, and why? Provide a link to the standard's specification.

• What's the best project management software for internal dev. 5 man shop

  I work for a large corporation, but we do small intranet web application development. Our project management tracking sucks. Its custom software built by a jr. intern. For what its worth, our development style is akin to agile, but there's nothing set in stone...very customer oriented approach. I need project tracking that meets the criteria: Intranet, internal products. Mostly maintenance, some new development. 5 developers 12 products 1 hands-off manager. He really just wants to know estimated man hours, due date for dev, QA and release. Along with a short description of the project. Free or super cheap. Bonus Simple pretty UI. Think pretty charts. Hope I covered everything. Please ask for any clarification. If you read dreaming in code, the company uses some project tracking software that sounds pretty sweet. Note, we do have Team Foundation Server. I already tried pushing its use as PM tracking, but its too complicated. I can't get people to sit and train. So this software has to be easy.
