  • Cannot change power button or lid close action

    I have a Samsung 900x laptop and I want to change it so that when I close the lid, nothing happens (I often close the lid to carry it somewhere 10 seconds away, and by putting it into suspend it cancels any active downloads/etc). Easy, right? Go to Power Options and change it there; just like on every other laptop in the world. Not so fast: Saywhat?! That message only shows up for the nodes for Lid Close Action, Power Button and Sleep Button. I can change every other setting except for those three. I'm definately an Administrator on the computer, and I've googled the error and found dozens of hits on other crappy forums, but of course nothing on those worked (otherwise, I wouldn't be here). And as ususal the "Why can't..." hyperlink gives no useful infomation what so ever (just a generic Help document). So - how can I change what closing the lid does? I will modify the registry directly if I have to.

  • Can I use this power supply + case combination without causing problems?

    I am putting together a computer with a Antec P180 case and a Thermaltake TR2 RX 650 W power supply. The problem is that the Antec P180 case has a separate compartment for the power supply. With an opening for the on/off switch + ac connector to one side, a wall with a small hole for cables to route through on top, a wall on the bottom, and on the other side a fan which pushes air from the hard drive compartment to the power supply compartment. I think the design of the case assumes the power supplies fan is on the side next to the on/off switch, but the fan on the power supply I have is on top, which makes me worry about overheating the power supply. There is about half an inch between the top of the power supply and the wall and the other fan should keep air flowing to push out the air that the power supply pushes upwards. Do you think this setup should work, or should I go get another power supply? Thanks!! PS: This computer will be running an Ubuntu server, so it will always be on, but the rest of the components shouldn't be generating as much heat as they would on say a gaming machine.

  • Laptop power button not working

    I have a (seemingly rather exotic) Dell Latitude XT2 notebook running Lubuntu 12.04, fresh install. Tried to get the power button to work as expected (opening lubuntu-logout, just as I think it was meant to be out-of-the box), but no success: power button does nothing but forced power-off on long press. Here some more information, please ask if something more could help: Power button is recognized as a device: xinput lists Power Button as a slave keyboard at /dev/input/event1, and I can run a tool to listen to that device and invoke some action (successfully). But using .config/openbox/lubuntu-rc.xml to assign some action to XF86ShutDown or XF86PowerOff does nothing. Works well for any key of the keyboard. xinput --test reports a keycode (key press, key release) of 124 when pressing & releasing the power button. xmodmap -pk lists 124 mapped to XF86PowerOff which seems correct to me (btw: is this the same as XF86ShutDown?) When assigning another keysymname to the 124 keycode, e.g. 'w', still nothing happens when pressing the power button (no window seems to receive a 'w'). Works well for any key on the keyboard. The outputs of xev for a press/release of the power button irritate me: MappingNotify event, serial 41, synthetic NO, window 0x0, request MappingKeyboard, first_keycode 8, count 248 FocusOut event, serial 41, synthetic NO, window 0x2a00001, mode NotifyGrab, detail NotifyAncestor FocusIn event, serial 41, synthetic NO, window 0x2a00001, mode NotifyUngrab, detail NotifyAncestor KeymapNotify event, serial 41, synthetic NO, window 0x0, keys: 93 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 (instead of 93, I also get different values) I might have missed something very basic since I'm not very familiar with both openbox/lubuntu and the X input system. Btw.: same goes for three other special buttons on my laptop..

  • What is this very short power cable called?

    I have a couple of networking components in my rack that take giant AC adapters ("power bricks") that don't fit neatly into my rackmount PDU. I have one "thingy" that is shown below, and I need to buy a few more. But I have no idea what I'm searching for because I don't know what the "thingy" is called. Yes, this drawing is terrible. I would ask my 4-year-old to draw it for me because she's a better artist, but she's taking a nap.

  • Windows 7 on Laptop: Show 3 power Profiles instead of just 2

    The only thing I miss from Vista on W7 is that, you can click the batery icon and select one of three power profiles without having to open the Energy option Window. Can I archieve this on W7 Without having to install a third party tool? I have tried one, but with so many bugs and problems, but I guess there are maybe one tool out there that works fine.   • Sleep uses more power than I expect

    When my new Dell laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium and 4GB RAM sleeps (not when it hibernates), it will drain the battery overnight. My old Dell laptop with XP Pro (2 GB RAM) could sleep for days without running out of battery. Is it normal that Windows 7 sleep is this power-hungry or should I troubleshoot my new machine? Edit: I know how to set the different sleep/hibernate settings. That is not what I'm asking.

    I bought a Dell Inspiron N 5050 last week, and recently discovered a problem with my laptop. It doesn't Power On until and unless I Plug-in the charger. After I plug-in the charger, it boots up fine, and continues to work well after disconnecting the charger. I don't know what the problem is exactly?     With a typical USB hard drive enclosure, is the full range of drive power management functionality available? In what may be an unrelated matter: is it possible to suspend a PC without unmounting an attached USB-powered drive, and then remounting it on resume? This is the behaviour I'm currently seeing (running Ubuntu linux 10.10). Are there certain models or brands that provide more complete control over this aspect of drive operation? My Friendly Neighbourhood Computer Store carries (part of) the Vantec Nexstar product line.

  • Why did my power supply fry itself?

    I am in europe. There was a switch on my psu that could switch the voltage between 230v and 130v (not 100% sure). In europe we use 230. I switched the psu to 110 and turned it on. Several sparks and a power failiure resulted, the psu was fried. Can someone explain why this happened. I was assuming that because the system was using 230 and the psu only draws 130 it would be safe cause it's less. I guess i was wrong. Can someone explain me the physics behind this.

    I've got quite simple question actually. How green, low-power and efficient x86 home server can I build using consumer parts with rather constrained budget. After looking through some Google hits I've found out that system based on dual-core atom, some modest mITX board (gigabit lan, integrated audio and gfx etc), one RAM module and one 'green' WD HDD, powered by picoITX PSU uses about 30W at idle up to 40 at load. Can you get lower (or how much lower) then that? Maybe some VIA nano chips, or single core atom? My home server would take care of some back-upping mixed with little ftp/http traffic.

  • Laptop touchpad works incorrect when on power supply

    My original laptop adapter broke down, so I've baught a new one. It's a no-brand adapter from a dutch internet shop. The power of the new adapter is slightly more than the old adapter, but in my opinion that shouldn't be a problem. The laptop is a Toshiba Sattelite L40-15B. When the old adapter broke down due to short circuit, this laptop was connected. When the adapter is unplugged, the touchpad works correctly and smoothly. But as soon as it is connected, the cursor moves jumpy, and response badly. Does anyone know where this problem comes from, and if there's a solution?

  • New power supply and now HDDs are not recognized

    So I upgraded to a new X4 ULTRA power supply that was recommended to me by a local TigerDirect store. After installing it along with a new liquid cooling system, I booted it up and it automatically fried my CD Drive. After that I noticed that the OS wouldn't start and figured out that none of the 4 HDDs in my computer were being recognized by the BIOS. I feel them spool at a steady pace and have tried new cables and connections but to no avail. I triple checked all of the connections and cables and have no idea what is wrong. This isn't the first time I changed a PS or CPU cooling system but I am at a dead end. Any ideas, aside from buying a USB HDD reader and seeing if they are all fried? Also, this is a stock Gateway mobo with the mobo USB connections already dead. Could the new PS have fried the SATA connections??

  • Can a power loss break an hard disk?

    Today I was working when all of a sudden a power loss (in the entire house) occurs. I tried to reboot the machine but it states that there's an "Ebios error"; tried with an Ubuntu 9.04 live cd and while booting it states that there are various I/O errors on the first partition (the one with the boot sector). Now I managed to backup all of my data (using the live cd aforementioned) but I don't know if it'll worth the hassle of a reinstallation (and if it could do something useful) or if the only thing to do is to drop the hard disk as far as possible...   • Dell XPS M1330 - power cable pulled by accident and now it won't turn on

    I have a similar problem to what has been posted on this site about when I plug in my Laptop adapter the green light comes on as expected; but, when I plug it into the laptop it goes out. In my case, I know it's not the adapter because I have 2 and they both experience the same issue. I'm quite certain the problem is a short in the laptop. I was using the laptop today and the power cord was pulled out by accident and now i'm into this predicament. How or what do I check on the laptop to isolate the problem? Thanks!

  • Re-cased my computer now the power plug keeps shorting

    I've just re-cased my computer. I got the new case free and thought I'd be able to swap everything over myself but apparently I've done something wrong. I'm OK with components generally but wasn't totally confident about doing this. So, my question is, when setting up a new PC or moving old components into a new case, what could I have done which causes the power cable plug to short/fuse when I plug it in?. Is this likely to be an issue with the cables from my PSU, or could it be the internal case connectors? What steps would you take to diagnose the problem?   • Power outage, Server 2K3 remains on "applying computer settings"

    My reward for clicking the "test" button in the APC UPS software was that it completely cut the power to my SQL server. The server promptly rebooted, the SQL service is running (verified by the app on another server that queries it), but the GUI has remained on "applying computer settings" for 20 minutes and counting, and it forbids RDC connections. Since SQL is up, it is fulfilling its key role, but it's obviously not right. What step to take next? Wait longer? Hardware is a Dell Poweredge 2850, internal RAID10.

    My Asus Eee PC 900 shows no signs of life. I push the power button and get no response from anything. No lights, no power, no boot-up screen.   • can power supply affect I/O

    I have a dev server machine running Ubuntu 12.04. For a long while it's been throwing intermittent errors where it would suddenly tell me "File system is read only" or drop into a GRUB error console on boot. I've done disk checks, bad blocks, etc. and no real problems with the main SATA drive were detected. Finally the drive would not be detected at all-- but neither would other drives I plugged in (via SATA). I plugged the supposedly "bad" drive into another server and it worked fine, no issues, for days-- so I assumed the motherboard had a bad SATA controller, and replaced the motherboard with an identical model. I replaced the drive into the original machine with the new motherboard, rebooted-- and the same issues-- I/O errors, failure to read the drive at all, dropping into GRUB, etc. I'm wondering if there could be some other issue with this machine, that's not related to the drive-- possibly power supply? Thanks for ideas
