• Is there a "good enough" solution for the halting problem?

  It is known that the halting problem cannot have a definite solution, one that a) returns true <== the program does indeed halt, and b) handles any input, but I was wondering if there are good enough solutions to the problem, ones that can maybe handle certain types of program flows perfectly, or is able to identify it when it cannot correctly solve the problem, and so on.... If so, how good are they, and what ideas/limitations do they rely on?

• Cannot install vim

  I am running ubuntu 11.10, as xubuntu, in an amd64 pc, configured as dual boot with win7 . I tried installing vim with this: sudo apt-get install vim I got these error message: "The following packages have unmet dependencies: vim : Depends: vim-common (= 2:7.3.154+hg~74503f6ee649-2ubuntu2) but 2:7.3.154+hg~74503f6ee649-2ubuntu3 is to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages." I only have a very faint idea of what the problem is, and none whatsoever on how to correct this. Hope you guys can help. Thanks

• Wireless very slow. Changed mode from Infracstructure to Ad-hoc

  This is my first time using Linux so go easy on me :) I downloaded and installed Mint 11 couple of days ago and I was having trouble connecting to internet with wifi. Actually it says it connects but does not load any webpages. I tried to get help from this model of laptop owners (Asus G73SW) who uses mostly Ubuntu but they said they never had any problem right from install. So I decided to try out Ubuntu 11.04. Same thing. BUT now I get internet after going into Network Connection edit and changing the Mode from Infracstructure to Ad-Hoc. I get load pages but very slow. And if I'm not mistaken, as I was writing this paragraph, I might have been disconnected. However the wifi bar is full. Please help me this newb because I really want to keep using Ubuntu but I might just have to go back to W7 if nothing can be done. Thank you!

• Installer hangs at blinking dots

  I've got a problem. I've tried booting it from a 4gb FlashDrive many times and yet, it'll just show me blinking dots. I've tried the options (booting from first drive, trying ubuntu without installing, help, test memory). I cant! I've also tried Ubuntu 11.10 but the turns out the same. Additional specs: First HDD, 2 partitions, C: and E: by Windows. Second HDD, 2 partitions, F: and G: by Windows. First HDD: 40Gb, Second HDD: 32Gb. I've made the Second HDD blank and plan to install Ubuntu there. Any help will do. I've tried both of the ISO images of both Linux Distros, but it didn't work. Both of them results to these. HELP "Registered protocol family 1", then "_", Boot from first hard drive Cannot load a ramdisk with an old kernel image.

• Site inaccessible by some people, fine for others [on hold]

  A couple of days ago my website www.howellphoto.com (hosted by one.com, wordpress site) started loading really slowly, and I have been unable to access any pages linked from the homepage. Several of my friends have found the same issue, yet many are able to access the site without problem. Live support at one.com have not been all that much help, requesting the ip addresses of a few people who cannot access the site, and saying it could be a firewall issue. Wordpress support (my site was created in prophotoblogs) have been better and have updated all plugins, etc, but can see no issue from their end. My main issue is that even if there was a local fix that I could do on my computer, this would not help wih any potential customers visiting my site for information! This is driving me crazy!!! Yesterday there was a first time message titled "Account Suspended due to registration information verification failure". I've never changed my contact information at my Web Host, and my contact Information has not been changed. I have Fan page on Facebook too, that my readers' could follow my blog easier, and there was same kind of message on my Facebook site too. Can you tell me, what's going on? I've not been broking any terms of use at my host, and writing good language on my blog. I think it's a some kind of hacker -thing? Is there nothing else to do than contact my web host that they can fix the problem? Can they? I Contacted last night my host, but got no answer yet.

• Cannot login in account with encrypted home after update from 11.04 to 11.10

  After upgrading from ubuntu 11.04 to 10.10 I cannot access my encrypted home partition anymore. I can login, however all data stays encrypted. ecryptfs-mount-private gives: ERROR: Encrypted private directory is not setup properly Any idea how to fix this? But I want to have one more constraint which is that the total degree for each vertex shouldnt exceed a certain constant factor. How do I model my problem? Is MST the wrong path? Do you know any algorithms that will help me? One more problem: My graph has duplicate edge weights so is there a way to count the number of unique MSTs? Are there algorithms that do this? Thank You. • Solving problems with near infinite potential solutions

  Today I read the following problem: Use the digits 2, 0, 1, 1 and the operations +, -, x, ÷, sqrt, ^ , !, (), combinations, and permutations to write equations for the counting numbers 1 through 100. All four digits must be used in each expression. Only the digits 2, 0, 1, 1 may be used, and each must be used exactly once. Decimals may be used, as in .1, .02, etc. Digits may be combined; numbers such as 20 or 101 may be used. Example: 60 = 10*(2+1)!, 54 = ¹¹C2 - 0! Though I was able to quickly find around 50 solutions quite easily in my head, I thought programming it would be a far superior solution. However, I then realized I had no clue how to go about solving a problem like this. I am not asking for complete code for me to copy and paste, but for ideas about how I would solve this problems, and others like it that have nearly infinite potential solutions. As I will be writing it in python, where I have the most experience, I would prefer if the answers were more python based, but general ideas are great too.

• Installation doesn't detect existing partitions

  I am trying to install Ubuntu 11.10 in a dual boot with my existing Windows 7 but the installer does not detect any existing partitions. I have tried resetting my BCD using EasyBCD and doing fixmbr from the Windows startup disc. • Goals are not registering in Google Analytics

  I've had a site online for a few weeks, and Google Analytics is working fine. Except Goals, which are not registering for some strange reason. To be clear: visits to the site are being registered, but no goals are being registered. This is not correct, as people are visiting the goal pages. I've set up two pages specifically to test this, Funnel Page and Goal Page. (You can visit these, but please do not visit any other pages on the site, as I am performing an experiment and SO referrals would taint results). Below is a screenshot of Profiles > Goals on Analytics. Can you see any obvious mistakes I have made? I think I must have missed something really obvious, as this is my first time using Analytics, but I must get this fixed ASAP. It's driving me crazy.

• Blank screen after GRUB (64 bit) - cannot install Ubuntu

  My laptop's specs: Lenovo IdeaPad Z570 Intel Core i5-2410M @ 2.3Ghz 6 Gb RAM DDR3 640 Gb ATAPI Hard-disk Drive @ 5,200 RPM NVIDIA GeForce G520M with Optimus switching technology Broadcom 802.11n Network Adapter REALTEK soundcard Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit I downloaded Ubuntu Studio 11.04 and burned the iso image onto two different DVDs, using two different programs (one DVD is RW, the other is just R). I verified the hash MD5sum thing. I get as far as GRUB with the 4 options (install, advanced install, disk verification, system rescue) but no matter which one I select, I get a blank screen and nothing happens. The DVD drive spins down after about 30 seconds. Also just before the GRUB screen I get a message saying Error: "Prefix" is not set. I'm not sure if that's relevant. I have tried all the options using both DVDs. Same thing happens. I have changed the graphics setting in BIOS to UMA or Optimus, but still happens either way. I've tried booting with the wireless switch turned off, same thing happens. I downloaded 'vanilla' Ubuntu 64-bit and burned onto a CD, and the same thing happens. I have downloaded Ubuntu 32-bit and I am able to boot from the live CD (interestingly the wireless card won't work, but that's maybe another issue). I have searched extensively through these forums and other sites but I can't see anything that will help me. Is there something I'm missing? I'd really appreciate help on this. The laptop is less than 2 weeks old. I was so looking forward to getting Ubuntu Studio up and running. I've gone about as far as my technical abilities will allow.

• Tell me why I should bother using Linux if it's all about problems getting the OS to install or work properly? [closed]

  Why should I spend day's trying to get Ubuntu to either install and/or work properly? I'm using an Acer Timeline X laptop and if I install 10.04 the wireless doesn't work, and if I try installing 11.04 it either won't install, or if it installs it's full of bugs causing my computer to freeze all the time. So please, I'm all open ears. Someone give me one or two good reasons to continue wasting time (in hope it eventually works) before I decide to focus my time on other things like productivity (using Windows like I've been doing successfully the last 10 years). This is the second time I give Ubuntu a try, the first time was in 2010 using Ubuntu Studio and Ubuntu Desktop, and it ended with me shifting back to Windows since I had spent more time getting everything to work than actually working while trying Ubuntu. I really don't understand why it needs to be like this. Why go on trying when all I see is forums full of discussions about problems which people are having difficulties fixing. Or maybe there is just one special type of computer which works well with Linux? Would very much like to know which computer that is. SO please, if it's not to much trouble I really want to here from someone who has something good to say about going through all this trouble just to get a working environment up and running since I already have a working environment up and running called Windows. • How to report abuse to website hosting company (GoDaddy)

  I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask such a question... Let's say that a website posted a picture of me, without my consent, and I want to be removed (it's something private, could compromise my career if it's seen by someone that shouldn't). I sent them an email asking nicely that they should remove it, but they didn't respond and the picture is still there. Using 'Whois' I found that the website is hosted by GoDaddy. Is there a way (an email address, for ex.) to report to GoDaddy that one of the sites they're hosting does something illegal and to force them to remove the photo? I searched the site and found nothing about such a thing. Thnaks in advance!

• PC shuts down when installing ubuntu?

  I'm now using ubuntu from USB, and I'd like to install ubuntu on my hard disk. I tried the option of removing Vista while installing ubuntu. However, near the end of the installation process (presumably the end because I can see some slideshows on how to start using ubuntu), the screen suddenly goes to black with white words running around on it. Soon the computer shuts down. After that, restarting leads to a black screen with only a small white cursor on the top left corner. The cursor keeps blinking and nothing happens. I found that I can alternatively choose to boot with USB by hitting F12 just when the computer starts. So I tried to reinstall ubuntu by running ubuntu on USB. One of the options of installation is to update ubuntu 11.04 to ubuntu 11.04, so it seems the ubuntu is already installed somehow. Anyways, I tried both update and delete and install option but the same thing happens as the 1st time (sometimes before reaching the end), while I still cannot start my PC as ubuntu (without USB). How may I install ubuntu properly?

My question is: What other known methods exist which models the solution, and how? Google didn't throw up much.

• Solving a cyclical dependency in Ninject (Compact Framework)

  I'm trying to use Ninject for dependency injection in my MVP application. However, I have a problem because I have two types that depend on each other, thus creating a cyclic dependency. At first, I understand that it was a problem, because I had both types require each other in their constructors. Therefore, I moved one of the dependencies to a property injection instead, but I'm still getting the error message. What am I doing wrong? This is the presenter: public class LoginPresenter : Presenter<ILoginView>, ILoginPresenter { public LoginPresenter( ILoginView view ) : base( view ) { } } and this is the view: public partial class LoginForm : Form, ILoginView { [Inject] public ILoginPresenter Presenter { private get; set; } public LoginForm() { InitializeComponent(); } } And here's the code that causes the exception: static class Program { /// <summary> /// The main entry point for the application. /// </summary> [MTAThread] static void Main() { // Show the login form Views.LoginForm loginForm = Kernel.Get<Views.Interfaces.ILoginView>() as Views.LoginForm; Application.Run( loginForm ); } } The exception happens on the line with the Kernel.Get<>() call. I even read somewhere looking for the solution to this problem that Ninject supposedly gets this right as long as the cyclic dependency isn't both in the constructors. Apparently not, though. Any help resolving this would be much appreciated.
