• Good ol fashioned debugging

- by Tim Dexter
I have been helping out one of our new customers over the last day or two and I have even managed to get to the bottom of their problem FTW! They use BIEE and BIP and wanted to mount a BIP report in a dashboard page, so far so good, BIP does that! Just follow the instructions in the BIEE user guide. The wrinkle is that they want to enter some fixed instruction strings into the dashboard prompts to help the user. These are added as fixed values to the prompt as the default values so they appear first. Once the user makes a selection, the default strings disappear. Its a fair requirement but the BIP report chokes Now, the BIP report had been setup with the Autorun checkbox, unchecked. I expected the BIP report to wait for the Go button to be hit but it was trying to run immediately and failing. That was the first issue. You can not stop the BIP report from trying to run in a dashboard. Even if the Autorun is turned off, it seems that dashboard still makes the request to BIP to run the report. Rather than BIP refusing because its waiting for input it goes ahead anyway, I guess the mechanism does not check the autorun flag when the request is coming from the dashboard. It appears that between BIEE and BIP, they collectively ignore the autorun flag. A bug? might be, at least an enhancement request. With that in mind, how could we get BIP to not at least not fail? This fact was stumping me on the parameter error, if the autorun flag was being respected then why was BIP complaining about the parameter values it should not even be doing anything until the Go button is clicked. I now knew that the autorun flag was being ignored, it was a simple case of putting BIP into debug mode. I use the OC4J server on my laptop so debug msgs are routed through the dos box used to start the OC4J container. When I changed a value on the dashboard prompt I spotted some debug text rushing by that subsequently disappeared from the log once the operation was complete. Another bug? I needed to catch that text as it went by, using the print screen function with some software to grab multiple screens as the log appeared and then disappeared. The upshot is that when you change the dashboard prompt value, BIP validates the value against its own LOVs, if its not in the list then it throws the error. Because 'Fill this first' and 'Fill this second' ie fixed strings from the dashboard prompts, are not in the LOV lists and because the report is auto running as soon as the dashboard page is brought up, the report complains about invalid parameters. To get around this, I needed to get the strings into the LOVs. Easily done with a UNION clause: select 'Fill this first' from SH.Products Products UNION select Products."Prod Category" as "Prod Category" from SH.Products Products Now when BIP wants to validate the prompt value, the LOV query fires and finds the fixed string -> No Error. No data, but definitely no errors :0) If users do run with the fixed values, you can capture that in the template. If there is no data in the report, either the fixed values were used or the parameters selected resulted in no rows. You can capture this in the template and display something like. 'Either your parameter values resulted in no data or you have not changed the default values' Thats the upside, the downside is that if your users run the report in the BP UI they re going to see the fixed strings. You could alleviate that by having BIP display the fixed strings in top of its parameter drop boxes (just set them as the default value for the parameter.) But they will not disappear like they do in the dashboard prompts, see below. If the expected autorun behaviour worked ie wait for the Go button, then we would not have to workaround it but for now, its a pretty good solution. It was an enjoyable hour or so for me, took me back to my developer daze, when we used to race each other for the most number of bug fixes. I used to run a distant 2nd behind 'Bugmeister Chen Hu' but led the chasing pack by a reasonable distance.

• Oracle SOA Suite for healthcare integration Dashboard By Nitesh Jain

- by JuergenKress
Oracle SOA Suite Healthcare came up with a new way of monitoring where user can configure a dashboard and follow the dynamic runtime changes. Oracle SOA Suite for healthcare integration dashboards display information about the current health of the endpoints in a healthcare integration application. You can create and configure multiple dashboards as needed to monitor the status and volume metrics for the endpoints you have defined. The Dashboards reflects changes that occur in the runtime repository, such as purging runtime instance data, new messages processed, and new error messages. You can display data for various time periods, and you can manually refresh the data in real time or set the dashboard to automatically refresh at set intervals. Dashboard shows the following information: Status: The current status of the endpoint, such as Running, Idle, Disabled, or Errors. Messages Sent: The number of messages sent by the endpoint in the specified time period. Messages Received: The number of messages received by the endpoint in the specified time period. Errors: The number of messages with errors for the endpoint in the given time period. Last Sent: The date and time the last message was sent from the endpoint. Last Received: The date and time the last message was received from the endpoint. Last Error: The date and time of the last error for the endpoint. It also shows the detailed view of a specific Endpoint. The document type. The number of messages received per second. The total number of message processed in the specified time period. The average size of each message. • In Puppet, how would I secure a password variable (in this case a MySQL password)?

- by Beaming Mel-Bin
I am using Puppet to provision MySQL with a parameterised class: class mysql::server( $password ) { package { 'mysql-server': ensure => installed } package { 'mysql': ensure => installed } service { 'mysqld': enable => true, ensure => running, require => Package['mysql-server'], } exec { 'set-mysql-password': unless => "mysqladmin -uroot -p$password status", path => ['/bin', '/usr/bin'], command => "mysqladmin -uroot password $password", require => Service['mysqld'], } } How can I protect $password? Currently, I removed the default world readable permission from the node definition file and explicitly gave puppet read permission via ACL. I'm assuming others have come across a similar situation so perhaps there's a better practice.

• Windows Azure v1.7 Spring Release Today–New Management Dashboard

- by ToStringTheory
Today, Microsoft will be publicly releasing a new version of Azure for public consumption. The web conference, at http://www.meetwindowsazure.com will be airing at 1 PM PST. They have already released an update to the Service Dashboard that can be accessed by going to http://manage.windowsazure.com. I have some images of the new dashboard here that I have gathered and removed any PII from. Let me know what you think! Images You should be able to click any of the images for a full resolution image. Tutorial The first thing you get after signing in is the tutorial: Landing After the tutorial completes, you get a screen with services that are active on your account on the left, and a list of ALL services (db/blob/SQL Azure) on the right. I like the quick access to services across any of my subscriptions: Service Information These are images from a running web site with several roles. I love how easy they have made many of the features: SQL Azure They have given some great quick functionality for looking at your DB information: Storage Here is the basic information that they give you for any storage accounts you have: Adding Services Super quick and easy to add services with the new UI: Conclusion I am EXCITED! As you may have seen in the left side of my blog, I am an MCPD in Azure Development, and I must say that I am excited to see Microsoft moving forward with the technology and not letting it stagnate. After as much as I have fought the other Azure dashboard, I like the friendliness and fluidity of this one. The important thing to note about ALL of the images above: this is HTML, not Silverlight. The responsiveness is FAST on all of the actions I completed, and I believe that this is a big step forward for Azure… So, what do you think?

• What methods are there to configure puppet to serve resources for multiple environments?

- by cclark
I seem to come across two ways for using puppet in multiple environments: 1) Install a puppetmaster in each environment and only update the recipes from source control for that environment when ready to deploy the recipes in that environment. 2) Use one puppetmaster and use a variable in the puppet.conf of each client to specify the environment and then in the puppetmaster specify a different modulepath for each environment and each of those paths is updated to the branch of the recipe repository intended for that environment (e.g. dev, staging, production). Only running one puppetmaster seems like it is one less piece of infrastructure to keep running but there is some additional complexity in the configuration. Are there additional pros or cons to one of these methods or something which I'm missing entirely?

• How to generate good serials for DNS zones with Puppet?

- by Bittrance
My tradition is to set all zone serials to the timestamp at modification. Now that Puppet is my new religion, I want to set serial timestamps when building zone files from exported resources. A somewhat trivialized example may look like this: file { "/tmp/dafile": content = inline_template("<%= Time.now.to_i %>"), } The problem with this approach is that content will be different all the time, which will (ultimately) provoke rebuilding of zone files on each puppet config poll. Is there some way I can insert a timestamp without it being included in the data that is compared against previous state?

• How to create a simple adf dashboard application with EJB 3.0

- by Rodrigues, Raphael
In this month's Oracle Magazine, Frank Nimphius wrote a very good article about an Oracle ADF Faces dashboard application to support persistent user personalization. You can read this entire article clicking here. The idea in this article is to extend the dashboard application. My idea here is to create a similar dashboard application, but instead ADF BC model layer, I'm intending to use EJB3.0. There are just a one small trick here and I'll show you. I'm using the HR usual oracle schema. The steps are: 1. Create a ADF Fusion Application with EJB as a layer model 2. Generate the entities from table (I'm using Department and Employees only) 3. Create a new Session Bean. I called it: HRSessionEJB 4. Create a new method like that: public List getAllDepartmentsHavingEmployees(){ JpaEntityManager jpaEntityManager = (JpaEntityManager)em.getDelegate(); Query query = jpaEntityManager.createNamedQuery("Departments.allDepartmentsHavingEmployees"); JavaBeanResult.setQueryResultClass(query, AggregatedDepartment.class); return query.getResultList(); } 5. In the Departments entity, create a new native query annotation: @Entity @NamedQueries( { @NamedQuery(name = "Departments.findAll", query = "select o from Departments o") }) @NamedNativeQueries({ @NamedNativeQuery(name="Departments.allDepartmentsHavingEmployees", query = "select e.department_id, d.department_name , sum(e.salary), avg(e.salary) , max(e.salary), min(e.salary) from departments d , employees e where d.department_id = e.department_id group by e.department_id, d.department_name")}) public class Departments implements Serializable {...} 6. Create a new POJO called AggregatedDepartment: package oramag.sample.dashboard.model; import java.io.Serializable; import java.math.BigDecimal; public class AggregatedDepartment implements Serializable{ @SuppressWarnings("compatibility:5167698678781240729") private static final long serialVersionUID = 1L; private BigDecimal departmentId; private String departmentName; private BigDecimal sum; private BigDecimal avg; private BigDecimal max; private BigDecimal min; public AggregatedDepartment() { super(); } public AggregatedDepartment(BigDecimal departmentId, String departmentName, BigDecimal sum, BigDecimal avg, BigDecimal max, BigDecimal min) { super(); this.departmentId = departmentId; this.departmentName = departmentName; this.sum = sum; this.avg = avg; this.max = max; this.min = min; } public void setDepartmentId(BigDecimal departmentId) { this.departmentId = departmentId; } public BigDecimal getDepartmentId() { return departmentId; } public void setDepartmentName(String departmentName) { this.departmentName = departmentName; } public String getDepartmentName() { return departmentName; } public void setSum(BigDecimal sum) { this.sum = sum; } public BigDecimal getSum() { return sum; } public void setAvg(BigDecimal avg) { this.avg = avg; } public BigDecimal getAvg() { return avg; } public void setMax(BigDecimal max) { this.max = max; } public BigDecimal getMax() { return max; } public void setMin(BigDecimal min) { this.min = min; } public BigDecimal getMin() { return min; } } 7. Create the util java class called JavaBeanResult. The function of this class is to configure a native SQL query to return POJOs in a single line of code using the utility class. • How to define nodes from a Hiera file in Puppet?

- by Pigueiras
I am using puppet and the puppet network device management module and I am trying to build my custom type. In the built-in type for the routers configuration, you can specify a list of nodes and then the configuration inside that node: node "c2950.domain.com" { Interface { duplex => auto, speed => auto } interface { "FastEthernet 0/1": description => "--> to end-user workstation", mode => access, native_vlan => 1000 # [...] More configuration } What I am trying to do, is to move the manifest declaration of the nodes and the configuration of my custom type to a Hiera file like this one: nodes: - node1 - node2 config_device: node1: custom_parameter: "whatever1" node2: custom_parameter: "whatever2" And then in the manifest iterate over the hiera file creating the nodes with the configuration of each node with something like (I am taking as reference this question in serverfault): class my_class { $nodes = hiera_array('nodes') define hash_extract() { $conf_hash = hiera_hash("config_device") $custom_paramter = $conf_hash[$name] ## TRICK lies in $name variable node $name { my_custom_device { $name: custom_parameter => $device_conf['custom_parameter'] } } } hash_extract{$pdu_names: } } } But for this solution I have two problems, I can not define a node inside a define and I can not parameterize a node name. So, is there any way to declare nodes from a Hiera file with their configuration inside?

• Byte Size Tips: How to Disable the Useless Dashboard on Mac OS X

- by The Geek
After getting my new MacBook Air with the awesome battery life, I decided to give OS X a spin for a while to see how I liked it. About 34 seconds later, I encountered my first irritation: The stupid Dashboard feature is just completely useless. Here’s how to disable it. Note: overall, Mac OS X is a really great operating system. It’s just this one feature that makes no sense. Simply Remove Dashboard from Spaces

• Goal completions 10x higher in dashboard

- by cjk
I have the following table in my Dashboard: Page path level 1 Visits Goal Completions ----------------- ------ ---------------- /sub1/ 994 1,295 / 102 3 /sub2/ 10 1 I know my conversion rate is 10-20%, and that actually in this period I only had 183 goal completions under /sub1/. My goal is set as a regular expression for a particular page (/success?.*), and I have a funnel set up which tracks the page before the goal (/action). The actual urls hit would be /sub1/action then /sub1/success?1234 and /sub2/action then /sub2/success?1234. Why is my table in my dashboard giving me wildly wrong numbers? Have I done something wrong?

• BlissControl Is a Settings Management Dashboard for Popular Social Networks

- by Jason Fitzpatrick
BlissControl is a simple web app that organizes the different settings menus of over a dozen social networks and services into a streamlined dashboard to help you change your profile pic, privacy settings, and more. Much like previously reviewed NotificationControl and MyPermissions (which help you check and set email notifications and app permissions, respectively), BlissControl also takes the very convoluted menus of web-apps and social media sites and makes them super easy to navigate. You can easily click right through the page you need on Facebook, Flickr, Twitter, and more–you’ll no longer need to visit each service and click through a maze of menus to get to the right place to change your password or swap your profile pic. BlissControl is simply a dashboard that directs you to the appropriate page within the service you already use–you never share your login credentials with BlissControl. Hit up the link below to take it for a spin. • Hiding recent files in Unity dashboard

- by Eric
Ubuntu 13.04 (though had the same issue in both 12.04 LTS and 12.10). Unity desktop (yes I like it, shush). Anyways, when clicking on the dashboard there is a tab for 'Files and Folders'. I don't have any files on this computer that isn't porn. In other words, it displays the images there (as it's supposed to), but I can't have it displaying the porn for obvious reasons. I have disabled 'recent activity' and even added the folder it's all in to the 'do not record activity in the following folders'. I'm assuming that works but as I don't actually have any other files, it still displays them. I don't want to have to make it a hidden folder because it's on an external HDD and causes issues when moving from computer to computer (I have other movies on it as well). TL;DR: Get rid of the 'Files and Folders' tab in the dashboard. Is it possible?

• Google Analytics Dashboard: week-by-week view

- by Silver Dragon
Setting up Google Analytics Dashboard allows webmasters to get a weekly progress report of marketing achievements & keep a finger on what's going on at web properties. However, by default, the dashboard always displays a day-by-day report, which isn't actionable in markets, where meaningful improvements happen on a week-by-week, or month-over-month basis. Is there any way the default view (and reports sent out via email) can be set to display week-level resolution, as opposed to day-level resolution? (ie, repro: analytics - site - Standard reports - audience - overview - right side of the window, click "weeK") Many thanks!

• Proper way to use hiera with puppetlabs-spec-helper?

- by Lee Lowder
I am trying to write some rspec tests for my modules. Most of them now use hiera. I have a .fixures.yml: fixtures: repositories: stdlib: https://github.com/puppetlabs/puppetlabs-stdlib.git hiera-puppet: https://github.com/puppetlabs/hiera-puppet.git symlinks: mongodb: "#{source_dir}" and a spec/classes/mongodb_spec.rb: require 'spec_helper' describe 'mongodb', :type => 'class' do context "On an Ubuntu install, admin and single user" do let :facts do { :osfamily => 'Debian', :operatingsystem => 'Ubuntu', :operatingsystemrelease => '12.04' } end it { should contain_user('XXXX').with( { 'uid' => '***' } ) should contain_group('XXXX').with( { 'gid' => '***' } ) should contain_package('mongodb').with( { 'name' => 'mongodb' } ) should contain_service('mongodb').with( { 'name' => 'mongodb' } ) } end end but when I run the spec test, I get: # rake spec /usr/bin/ruby1.8 -S rspec spec/classes/mongodb_spec.rb --color F Failures: 1) mongodb On an Ubuntu install, admin and single user Failure/Error: should contain_user('XXXX').with( { 'uid' => '***' } ) LoadError: no such file to load -- hiera_puppet # ./spec/fixtures/modules/hiera-puppet/lib/puppet/parser/functions/hiera.rb:3:in `function_hiera' # ./spec/classes/mongodb_spec.rb:15 Finished in 0.05415 seconds 1 example, 1 failure Failed examples: rspec ./spec/classes/mongodb_spec.rb:14 # mongodb On an Ubuntu install, admin and single user rake aborted! /usr/bin/ruby1.8 -S rspec spec/classes/mongodb_spec.rb --color failed Tasks: TOP => spec_standalone (See full trace by running task with --trace) Module spec testing is relatively new, as is hiera. So far I have been unable to find any suitable solutions. (the back and forth on puppet-dev was interesting, but not helpful). What changes do I need to make to get this to work? Installing puppet from a gem and hacking on rubylib isn't a viable solution due to corporate policy. I am using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS + Puppet 2.7.17 + hiera 0.3.0.

• In what URL segment do you have language? /en/admin/dashboard or /admin/en/dashboard?

- by Shimmi
maybe you are thinking that this is another dump question about language in URL, but I hope it is not! I've red many articles on this, but non of them was dealing with "sections of site" (described bellow). I am programming a new application platform in laravel/php and I am still not 100% convinced where to put language slug. There are many places where you can put it - some of them are better some are worse: example.com/en/article en.example.com/article example.com/article?lang=en My personal choice is to put language after the domain - so the first option in above list. But what if you are in some special secion like admin or api? where do you put language then? example.com/en/admin/dashboard example.com/en/api/v1/user/login or example.com/admin/en/dashboard example.com/api/v1/en/user/login (in frontend it is left the same: example.com/en/some-article) what do you preffer? what are cons and pros? One thing is using language in first segments is far more easier to programm than when it have some variants... P.S. whould you recoment using only en, cs or do it in full power with cz-CZ, en-US ? thanks for any thoughts! J.

• Is there any way to use arrays in a puppet module (not in template)?

- by KARASZI István
I want to use puppet to manage a hadoop cluster. On the machines we have several directories which must be created and set permissions. But i'm unable to add array values for defined methods. define hdfs_site( $dirs ) { file { $dirs: ensure => directory, owner => "hadoop", group => "hadoop", mode => 755; } file { "/opt/hadoop/conf/hdfs-site.xml": content => template("hdfs-site.xml.erb"), owner => "root", group => "root", mode => 644; } } define hadoop_slave( $mem, $cpu, $dirs ) { hadoop_base { mem => $mem, cpu => $cpu, } hdfs_site { dirs => $dirs, } } hadoop_base is similar to hdfs_site. Thanks!

• Simple Windows+Linux server provisioning? Chef/Puppet/Ansible etc

- by Andrew
I'm primarily a developer, part time devops; and manage servers here and there for my projects. I want to automate provisioning of web/app/database servers going forward for my projects I manage a mixture of both Windows and Linux servers (VPS, cloud and dedicated) I've looked at investigated Chef/Puppet/Ansible briefly; and I am wanting to find something that: Is easy to learn and understand. I don't want to invest weeks into understanding a complicated piece of tech. Ideally does not require a server ("master server") to hold the configurations Supports provisioning of Windows and Linux servers Comes with suitable documentation to get started Does anyone have any advice on what tool is best suited? Thanks

• Git: push via ssh to a root owned repository with ssh root logins disabled

- by anthonysomerset
is that even possible? Summary, i'm running puppet master on a server and ideally we want root logins via ssh disabled, we want to force all access via sudo if root access required however we have puppet installed using a git repo to manage the manifests, this repo is currently owned by root and currently i only know of 2 solutions (less ideal) allow root access via key auth only - if so, what can i lock it down to to only allow the git push commands? own the repo in /etc/puppet as a different owner - will puppet work reliably with this?

• Configure Jenkins and Tomcat using Puppet

- by ex3v
I'm trying to setup Spring dev environment (jenkins, tomcat) on Vagrant. What I really want to achieve is to limit config to only Puppet scripts, so I can share it with my colleagues and work together on the same environment. So far I managed to set up simple scripts to install jenkins, tomcat and so on, they work fine. What about jenkins configuration though? I'm pretty green in jenkins usage and configuration, not sure if I'm doing it the right way... I found this article and I want to migrate whole setup described in it to Puppet. Any ideas? Thanks.
