• Windows Server 2008 Task Scheduler Tasks Not Executing

  I've been having an intermittent problem for some time now with the Windows Task Scheduler that I can't work out. I use the task scheduler to run a C# app I've written that has various plugins used to ensure production systems are working. This task scheduler itself is actually a production system so I have one simple task that executes every 8 minutes to notify an external monitoring system that the task scheduler is still up. If this external service fails to receive an "all-clear" at least once every 15 minutes (or so I don't remember the exact number right now) it will message us that the monitoring system is down. In the past we've had intermittent "down" messages from time to time and each time I've investigated the cause I was unable to find any problems. So this time I wanted to ask the StackOverflow community since it doesn't look like I'll have luck on my own. This morning at 2:32 AM the task fired (exactly 8 minutes after the previous firing) however the task didn't fire again until 3:28. There are no errors that I can see in the Event Viewer at this time. When I look at the Task Scheduler log there are no errors there either. I also have two other C# apps that run and check something each hour on the hour using task scheduler. If I look at the history for those I can see that they didn't execute at 3 AM either! They all waited until 3:28 to start as well. If I look at "tasks completed" in the Event Viewer it shows that only one task was able to run between the 2:32 AM to 3:28 AM time period. • Scheduled task to map a network drive runs, but doesn't map the drive

  I have a task set up to run whenever the computer is logged onto that deletes all network folders and maps a network drive. Here is what is in the batch file: @echo off net use * /delete /y net use b: \\Server\Share /user:DOMAIN\Username password exit When the computer is restarted or logged off and back on, the task runs fine (according to the scheduled tasks window saying when it ran last) but the mapped drive doesn't show up. I'll open the command prompt and type "net use" and it simply says "There are no entries in the list". If I then right click on the task and run it, it works and the mapped drive shows up. I've checked the log and nothing shows up. I've tried adding a timer in the batch file so it waits 10 seconds (ping 1.1.1.1 -n 1 -w 10000nul) thinking that maybe the network wasn't connected, but that didn't work. What else can I try? • Disable ability to add startup items in Windows 7?

  Note: This is not the question "How to disable startup items" because the simple answer is: "Use msconfig". Now as for my question: I recently am very annoyed that some programs add startup items to my PC without my knowledge after installation, I always have 2 programs which startup - Temperature monitor and the Catalyst Control Center Tray. Now, sometimes I install something and it adds startup entries, how can I make sure that no startup entries can be added to windows anymore? So what I would like to do: -Disable adding scheduled tasks (even for administrator accounts, so programs installing from them can't add startup entries too) -Disable adding startup entries to the registry (even for administrators, would changing the permissions in HKLM on the Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run to read only be enough?) -Disable all other methods of startup in Windows 7 I don't know -Set default startup of NEW installed services to "Start Manually" instead of/and block "Start Automaticly" and "Start Automaticly (Delayed)" How can I accomplish this? This is also a nice way to prevent most viruses fom running after machine reboot (if this can be accomplished).

  On our Win 2008 machines I can't schedule tasks for domain users because the domain name does not resolve to network name but the AD dc name. The "network name" looks like ABCDEFGE-HIJKLM and the "dc" / "name" would look like ABCDEFGE-HIJKLMN. When selecting the domain user account the account qualifier will look like ABCDEFGE-HIJKLMN\task.user. This results in an "invalid account" error. When however keeping the currently logged in user it will display ABCDEFGE-HIJKLM\current.user. Does this behaviour result from the presumable "illegal" domain name? Is there a workaround for this? update I could of course log in as the desired domain account and create the task but since this account is a account used for running services I want to avoid creating a user profile on the machine.

• Schedule power-on with ASUS P8H77-I?

  Is it possible to have my box with an ASUS P8H77-I to automatically power on each sunday at 0:00 (for backup tasks)? I could not find such an option in the BIOS (or rather EFI). [edit] nevermind, I found it. Its called "RTC alarm date" or sth like this. Still I wonder if there was a possibility to wake the machine like every week on sunday? As it seems, I can only set either everyday, or a single day in the month. I would like to do weekly backups, but this would only allow me to do monthly backups.

  In one of the project, I need to display workflow related tasks in the item display page where the workflow is currently running on. To achieve this, I’d like to add the tasks list view web part and using the connected web part to achieve this.(ID=workflowitemid) However, to make it work I need to unhide the workflowitemid field in the task list, as it is hidden field and also cantogglehidden field is set to false. I need to use reflection to change the cantogglehidden field to true as it only has getter in the API and then I am able to unhide the field. You can download the script here. However, it is not ideal (make your environment not supported by Microsoft) to display tasks this way. Another way to display the related task is to use SharePoint designer solution with List view web part and data source. Here are the steps. 1. Create a new list display form as below 2. Edit the custom display form in advanced mode. 3. Find the PlaceHolderMain contentplace hoder and insert the DataView by choosing the associated workflow tasks list as below 4. Go to the List View Tools >> OPTIONS 5. Create a Parameter called workflowitemId Parameter which retrieve the value from the ID querystring as below 6. Create a filter based on UIVersion = workflowitemId as below ,we are going to change the UIVersion to WorkflowItemId property later as WorkflowItemId is a hidden field and cannot be selected from the wizard. 7.   Is there a practical solution to organizing the initial tasks for a new project? To elaborate, imagine the features/stories/goals are laid out for a project. How might one go about organizing those into sane tasks for the first few versions? The scenario I typically have in mind has the features listed as a high-level reference for what the end user-experience should involve. The tasks for constructing such features are then broken down into chunks (such as "create interface for X component"). Such a task is not necessarily "tied" to only that feature and may be useful when building subsequent features. Is breaking features down into small, code-able solutions valid? Or should they be slightly removed from any specific implementation? I do not expect that there is one "right" answer to this question, but I am looking for a fairly pragmatic and unobtrusive approach. As a note, I'm looking for solutions that are independent of any tools or "systems" used for managing the tasks themselves.

The problem is that job postings for contractors don't really tell you which specific tasks you should be able to do at different experience levels (in rails and other technologies), so I don't know where to pitch myself. I think I am somewhere between junior and mid-level, but who knows? So my question is: Which actual tasks should an junior programmer be able to do at, say, $35 an hour, which actual tasks should an intermediate programmer be able to do at, lets say, $75 an hour, and which actual tasks should an advanced programmer be able to do at, oh say, $140 an hour? One or two examples should suffice.

  Guys, I'm having trouble understanding why I can't seem to stub this controller method :load_user, since all of my tests fail if I change the actual implementation of :load_user to not return and instance of @user. • task strategies for handling HardDeadlineExceededError

  I've got a number of tasks/servlets that are hitting the HardDeadlineExceededError which is leaving everything hanging in an 'still executing' state. The work being done can easily exceed the 29 second threshold. I try to catch the DeadlineExceededException and base Exception in order to save the exit state but neither of these exception handlers are being caught... Is there a way to determine which tasks are in the queue or currently executing? Are there any other strategies for dealing with this situation?

• Old scheduled task still being started, but can't find it.

  System: Windows XP Home Summary: Some scheduled task is still being started by Windows, but I can't find it, nor determine where its configuration has been stored. This is turning into a mystery for me... I set up a Windows XP Home machine to run a task at 7:00 AM, using the Task manager. This was a clean install, no users defined, so you got straight to the desktop after starting the machine. The filesystem uses NTFS. Later on, I needed to introduce users, so I created one (named Sam) with administrator privileges. After this I noticed that the scheduled task failed, most likely due to privilege errors (i.e. can't write to a network drive). So I want to delete the old task, and add it again with the correct user credentials. However.... I can't find the old task!! I know it is still being executed at 7:00 AM, but there's no mention anywhere on the system of this task. I've looked in c:\windows\tasks for .job files, but there's only the "MP Scheduled Scan.job" from Security Essentials. I've searched the whole disk for mention of the batch file that is being run, but can't find it. So why is this old task still running, and more importantly, why can't I find it? Would it have something to do with introducing users on XP?

The XP Pro one runs fine, the Windows 7 one always returns 0x2 (which means, "The system cannot find the file specified"; however, executing from the command line is no problem) in the Last Run Result column of the Task Scheduler UI. The scheduled task executes a .bat file daily. The .bat file contains a call to execute a Perl script. As I stated in the previous paragraph, it executes under XP without any trouble but under Windows 7, no dice. The task under Windows 7 is set to "run whether the user is logged on or not." In this case it is me, I am the only user of the system. It is also set to "Run with highest privileges." And it is not hidden. The .bat file executes perfectly well from the command line - it calls the Perl script as expected and the Perl script does its thing. I have searched far and wide looking for an appropriate answer to this issue. So far I have found nothing. What the devil is going on with this Win7 scheduled task? I am ready to pull my hair out.

• Roll up project-level tasks to the project collection portal in TFS2010

  I have a Project Collection setup in my TFS2010RC deployment. I have two Projects setup under this collection with their own task lists, which are populated with data. I fully expected the tasks from these individual projects to "roll up" and appear in the task list at the Project Collection level, but they do not. The Project Collection task list is empty. Basically, I'm looking to provide a view so a supervisor could see all tasks across projects quickly and easily. I'm sure I could write a reporting services report, but it seems like this is something so basic that it would have been included and it just need to be turned on or something. I'm sure I'm probably missing something really simple here. Thanks.

  I have been working on many applications which run as windows service or scheduled tasks. Now, i want to make sure that these applications will be fault tolerant and reliable. For example; i have a service that runs every hour. if the service crashes while its operating or running, i d like the application to run again for the same period, to avoid data loss. moreover, i d like the program to report the error with details. My goal is to avoid data loss and not falling behind for running the program. I have built a class library that a user can import into a project. Library is supposed to keep information of running instance of the program, ie. program reads and writes information of running interval, running status etc. This data is stored in a database. I was curious, if there are some best practices to make the scheduled tasks/ windows services fault tolerant and reliable.

• Rake tasks in other files

  Im trying to use rake in a project, and if I put everything into Rakefile it will be huge and hard to read/find things, so I tried to stick each namesapce in its own file in lib/rake, i added this to the top of my rake file: Dir['#{File.dirname(__FILE__)}/lib/rake/*.rake'].map { |f| require f } it loads the file no problem, but doesn't have the tasks. I only have one .rake file as a test for now called "servers.rake" and it looks like this: namespace :server do task :test do puts "test" end end so when I run rake server:test id expect to see one line appear saying "test", instead I get rake aborted! Don't know how to build task 'server:test' at first I thought my codes wrong but if I copy the contents of lib/rake/servers.rake into Rakefile it works fine. How do I get rake tasks to work that are in another file?

  I have just started working with a team that has picked up some aspects of Scrum (two week timeboxing) but not others (the team does not currently agree to all estimates or to the number of points in a sprint, but I'll change this soon.) The product owner is also a technical resource (scientist) with some development background. Is it appropriate to have the product owner's tasks (which mostly involve research) mixed in with the team's tasks (some of which are research and some development).   I'm trying to be diligent about checking my rake tasks with RSpec tests, but in the process of feeling my way around I seem to have hit a wall. I've got a really simple RSpec test that looks like this: # ./test/meta_spec.rb describe "Rake tasks" do require 'rake' before(:each) do @rake = Rake::Application.new @rake.load_rakefile # => Error here! Rake.application = @rake end after(:each) do Rake.application = nil end it "should have at least one RSpec test to execute" do Rake.application["specs"].spec_files.size.should > 0 end end I have a simple task called "specs" defined in ./Rakefile.rb which has an RSpec task that includes all the *_spec.rb files. If I put the @rake.load_rakefile method in, I want that Rakefile to load. But instead it just bombs out. If I comment it out, however, the test fails because the "specs" task is (understandably) not defined. Where am I going wrong?

• Typical tasks/problems to demonstrate differences between programming languages

  Somewhere some guy said (I honestly do not know where I got this from), that one should learn one programming language per year. I can see where that might be a good idea, because you learn new patterns and ways to look at the same problems by solving them in different languages. Typically, when learning a new language, I look at how certain problems are supposed to be solved in that language. My question now is, what, in you experience, are good, simple, and clearly defined tasks that demostrate the differences between programming languages. The Idea here is to have a set of tasks, that, when I solve all of them in the language I am learning, gives me a good overview of how things are supposed to be done in that language. I do not know if that is even possible, but it sure would be a useful thing to have. A typical example one often sees especially in tutorials for functional languages is the implementation of quicksort.

• Search for Variable Usage In SSIS tasks

  Hi all: As what seems to be some sort of penance for sins in a prior life, I have been tasked with maintaining some SSIS packages. (NO! NO BADMOUTHING SSIS!! BAD PROGRAMMMER! NO DOUGHNUT!). Anyhoo, I many of the packages have variables, defined in an outer container, which are used in multiple inner containers, in script tasks. What I want to do, is find out all the places in a package a variable being used; in other words, search for instances of variable usage in all tasks of a package. This would be a huge help, but I cannot for the life of me find out how this can be done in BIDS. (this is SSIS/BIDS 2008) Thanks for any help, YS

  Can anyone think of any techniques where i can have a Windows scheduled task run OSQL, but not have to pass the clear-text password with cleartext password being in the clear? • Automate GUI tasks?

  I have a Windows application which is deadware, and it lacks the option of exporting data into a file. The only way to extract data is to copy each line into the clipboard, and paste it in an editor. As a work-around, I'm thinking of recording the action once, and loop through it until it reaches the last line in the application. I know there are quite a few such utilities for Windows, so I'd appreciate it if you could recommend one for this task. Thank you.

• Permissions for Scheduled Tasks on a Domain Controller

  I'm trying to run a Scheduled Task on a 2008 R2 Domain Controller and all was well until I set it into the production environment. I'm running the task as a Domain User that's defined in the "Log on as a batch job" setting. For giggles I also added the account to "Allow log on locally" after the former failed. When I'm prompted for the password after setting up the task I receive the error: "An error has occurred for the task ########. Error message: The following error was reported: Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer.." I'm thinking that because this a DC that maybe it needs something else?
