    How is this sort order determined? Is it ranked by popularity, number of results, or a mysterious google algorithm? Does there algorithm take into account the search popularity of a query (using google-trends data or something)? Edit: I found a news article dating back to when google suggest was made public in 2004. Here is an excerpt... How does it work? I don't really have to use up the stream twice since all I need is the first number in the stream and the rest as another stream, i.e. equivalent of Scala's Stream.head and Stream.tail.   • Google chat badge not working anymore?

    I was using google talk chat badge (chatback - small iframe code that enables remote user to chat with you as anonymous) for some years but now it is not working anymore. The generated code is fine as it seems it opens a new window and all but after a second, it redirects to support.google.com page which of course is not of much use. I rechecked the code, generated new code, didn't help. Again redirects to support.google.com. The code is generated from http://www.google.com/talk/service/badge/New Anyone knows what's going on? Have they discontinued it or? Also, a suggestion - is there any alternative web-presence button like that for other messengers which don't require client on other end. For Skype, Windows Live or some other messenger?

    I'm looking for a replacement for JCaptcha, which doesn't seem to be maintained any more, and isn't very good to begin with. The replacement has to integrate nicely with JavaEE webapps. As I can see it, there are three options: JCaptcha - No longer maintained, crude API SimpleCaptcha - much nicer API, nicer captchas, but seems to be Java6 only ReCaptcha - easy to use, uses remote web-service to generate captchas, but not much control over look and feel Has anyone used any others, that they'd recommend?

    I am currently trying to build a web app using Google App Engine that will involve using the Google Maps API. Since I am coding in python, I tried importing the python wrapper for Google Maps (found here); however, performing the import will cause my web app to crash. Are there any suggestions for how I can fix this problem? I'm guessing the crash might have something to do with the fact that I need to incorporate the google maps python wrapper into my application, but how do I go about doing that? Thanks!

    Last year I read Jeff Jarvis' book What Would Google Do? and found it very interesting. Jeff is a long-time journalist that's been studying technology, and more specifically the internet. He used his skills to reverse-engineer Google into a list of "Google rules," then goes on to describe a futuristic world driven by these rules. Its an interesting look at crowd-sourcing, openness, and collaboration across many industries, including retail (Google Shops). This year Jeff Jarvis will be a keynote speaker at CrossTalk, Oracle's user conference dedicated to the retail industry. This year's theme is... Retail Redefined: Redesign. Reinvigorate. Reimagine. I think that's pretty appropriate given the massive changes the industry has undergone during the last three years. The thing I really like about this conference is that we try to let the retailers do most of the talking. I'm very interested in hearing about the innovative projects they've got brewing, and where they think our industry is heading. I'll be speaking, but I'm not sure about what so let me know of any interesting topics.

  • Disable the Old Adobe Flash Plugin in Google Chrome

    If you’ve just updated to the Dev or Beta release of Google Chrome, you might have noticed that a special version of Adobe Flash is now integrated into the default distribution of Chrome. But what about your old plug-in? As it turns out, the old plug-in is generally still installed… but you can easily disable Chrome plug-ins in the latest version, so let’s get to work. Disable the Extra Flash Plug-in Head over to about:plugins and look through the list—you should notice two Shockwave Flash plugins. The first one should be in your Google Chrome installation folder, and has the filename gcswf32.dll. This is the NEW one, so don’t disable it! If you keep scrollling down, you’ll see the old one, with the file name NPSWF32.dll. This is the OLD plugin, and you can safely disable it. Of course, if you only use Chrome you could just completely uninstall Adobe Flash from your system by heading into Control Panel’s Uninstall Programs screen, and then finding and uninstalling Adobe Flash Player Plugin. The ActiveX version is for Internet Explorer. We’ve not done any testing to see if the old Flash plugin is even still active or not, but may as well disable it just to be sure, right?   • Google earth will not reinstall

    I was trying to perform the the fix found at this link http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2012/01/how-to-make-google-earth-look-native-in-ubuntu It requires you to delete certain files from the /opt/google/earth/free folder and then add some new ones that you download. I deleted the files but the links to download the new ones were unusable. I was using gksudo nautilus so trash was disabled meaning I could not restore the files I had deleted. I the tried to go to the Google Earth website and reinstall it. I downloaded the .deb but when I tried to install it it gav me an error message saying "cannot install ia32-libs" I tried installing this via terminal and it gave me an error message saying chad@chad-Lenovo-G570:~$ sudo apt-get install ia32-libs [sudo] password for chad: Reading package lists...   • Selecting a JAX-RS implementation for a new project

    I'm starting a new Java project which will require a RESTful API. It will be a SaaS business application serving mobile clients. I have developed one project with Java EE 6, but I'm not very familiar with the ecosystem, since most of my experience is on the Microsoft platform. Which would be a sensible choice for a JAX-RS implementation for a new project such as described? Judging by Wikipedia's list, main contenders seem to be Jersey, Apache CXF, RESTeasy and Restlet. But the Comparison of JAX-RS Implementations cited on Wikipedia is from 2008. My first impressings from their respective homepages is that: CXF aims to be a very comprehensive solution (reminds me of WCF in the Microsoft space), which makes me think it can be more complex to understand, setup and debug than what I need; Jersey is the reference implementation and might be a good choice, but it's legacy from Sun and I'm not sure how Oracle is treating it (announcements page doesn't work and last commit notice is from 4 months ago); RESTeasy is from JBoss and probably a solid option, though I'm not sure about learning curve; Restlet seems to be popular but has a lot of history, I'm not sure how up-to-date it is in the Java EE 6 world or if it carries a heavy J2EE mindset (like lots of XML configuration). What would be the merits of each of these alternatives? What about learning curve? Feature support? Tooling (e.g. NetBeans or Eclipse wizards)? What about ease of debugging and also deployment? Is any of these project more up-to-date than the others? How stable are them?

    I have a blogger Blog website and I would like to have it show up on my company website. I have read a couple articles out there on how to do it. A hand full of them talk about using FTP which is old and no longer available. However, I am trying to following along with this one: http://www.infinite42.com/small-business/integrate-blogger-blog-website Which seems pretty easy but I am having a problem getting Google to Verify the DNS CName or Text Record that I created on my Windows 2007 Server. Do I need to create this record at the registra level. Right now the domain is setup at the registra to point the www record to my server where on my server I tried the Txt Record and the CName Record with no luck in DNS. Here are the Google instructions for creating a CName file record in DNS: Follow the steps below to create a DNS (Domain Name System) record that proves to Google that you own the domain. Add the CNAME record below to the DNS configuration for abc.com. CNAME Label / Host: CNAME Destination / Target: Click Verify below. When Google finds this DNS record, we'll make you a verified owner of the domain. (Note: DNS changes may take some time. If we don't find the record immediately, we'll check for it periodically.) To stay verified, don't remove the DNS record, even after verification succeeds.   • Why java -version returning a different version than the one defined in JAVA_HOME?

    I am trying to set JAVA_HOME in Ubuntu OS. I have copied jdk 1.7 in /usr/lib/jvm and set JAVA_HOME in /etc/profile file. Contents of /usr/lib/jvm folder are as follows : shekhar@ubuntu:~$ ls /usr/lib/jvm/ default-java java-1.6.0-openjdk java-6-openjdk java-6-openjdk-i386 jdk1.7.0_01 java-1.5.0-gcj-4.6 java-1.6.0-openjdk-i386 java-6-openjdk-common java-7-openjdk-i386 and last few lines of /etc/profile file are as follows : export JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.7.0_01 export PATH=$PATH:$JAVA_HOME/bin After finishing all this when I run java -version command I get following output : shekhar@ubuntu:~$ java -version java version "1.6.0_24" OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea6 1.11.4) (6b24-1.11.4-1ubuntu0.12.04.1) OpenJDK Server VM (build 20.0-b12, mixed mode) and when I run ls -lah command I get following output : shekhar@ubuntu:~$ ls -lah /usr/bin/java lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 22 Sep 29 09:58 /usr/bin/java -> /etc/alternatives/java shekhar@ubuntu:~$ ls -lah /etc/alternatives/java lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 45 Sep 29 09:58 /etc/alternatives/java -> /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk-i386/jre/bin/java Can anyone please tell me which thing I am missing?
