• How to parse a string of boolean logic in PHP

  I'm building a PHP class with a private member function that returns a string value such as: 'true && true || false' to a public member function. (This string is the result of some regex matching and property lookups.) What I'd like to do is have PHP parse the returned logic and have the aforementioned public function return whether the boolean result of the parsed logic is true or false. I tried eval(), but I get no output at all. I tried typecasting the boolean returns...but there's no way to typecast operators...hehe Any ideas? (Let me know if you need more information.)

• Convert ieee 754 float to hex with c - printf

  Ideally the following code would take a float in IEEE 754 representation and convert it into hexadecimal void convert() //gets the float input from user and turns it into hexadecimal { float f; printf("Enter float: "); scanf("%f", &f); printf("hex is %x", f); } I'm not too sure what's going wrong. It's converting the number into a hexadecimal number, but a very wrong one. 123.1443 gives 40000000 43.3 gives 60000000 8 gives 0 so it's doing something, I'm just not too sure what. Help would be appreciated

• Hung JVM consuming 100% CPU

  We have a JAVA server running on Sun JRE 6u20 on Linux 32-bit (CentOS). We use the Server Hotspot with CMS collector with the following options (I've only provided the relevant ones): -Xmx896m -Xss128k -XX:NewSize=384M -XX:MaxPermSize=96m -XX:+UseParNewGC -XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC Sometimes, after running for a while, the JVM seems to slip into a hung state, whereby even though we don't make any requests to the application, the CPU continues to spin at 100% (we have 8 logical CPUs, so it looks like only one CPU does the spinning). In this state the JVM doesn't respond to SIGHUP signals (kill -3) and we can't connect to it normally with jstack. We CAN connect with "jstack -F", but the output is dodgy (we can see lots of NullPointerExceptions from JStack apparently because it wasn't able to 'walk' some stacks). So the "jstack -F" output seems to be useless. UPDATE I've obtained some more information about this problem (it happened again on a server that has been running for more than 7 days). When the JVM entered the "hung" state it stayed like that for 2 hours until the server was manually restarted. We have obtained a core dump of the process and the gc log. We tried to get a heap dump as well, but "jmap" failed. We tried to use jmap -F but then only a 4Mb file was written before the program aborted with an exception (something about the a memory location not being accessible). So far I think the most interesting information comes from the gc log. Also, the gc log stops suddenly with that message and nothing else gets printed any more, probably because the VM Thread gets into some sort of infinite loop (or something that takes 2+ hours).

• Javascript Bookmarklet fails in IE8

  Anyone want to take a stab at why this bookmarklet fails in IE8? It turns all text uppercase in Friefox and Safari. But in IE8, it simply stalls with "loading..." I've enabled scriplets and the security settings in IE8.   I'm trying to find a way to compress specific assets post-update on a Production server. So far, I can't find any way to do this that's even remotely simple. Anyone has any insights/experience in doing this? Basically, what I need to do is run a Java utility to compress CSS and JS files - the problem with JS files is that they may or might not validate (JS errors), if it doesn't validate the Java utility will throw output a message. This makes the whole idea a bit more complicated.

• One position right barrel shift using ALU Operators?

  I was wondering if there was an efficient way to perform a shift right on an 8 bit binary value using only ALU Operators (NOT, OR, AND, XOR, ADD, SUB) Example: input: 00110101 output: 10011010 I have been able to implement a shift left by just adding the 8 bit binary value with itself since a shift left is equivalent to multiplying by 2. However, I can't think of a way to do this for shift right. The only method I have come up with so far is to just perform 7 left barrel shifts. Is this the only way?

• How to get users to read error messages?

  If you program for a nontechnical audience, you find yourself at a high risk that users will not read your carefully worded and enlightening error messages, but just click on the first button available with a shrug of frustration. So, I'm wondering what good practices you can recommend to help users actually read your error message, instead of simply waiving it aside. Ideas I can think of would fall along the lines of: Formatting of course help; maybe a simple, short message, with a "learn more" button that leads to the longer, more detailed error message Have all error messages link to some section of the user guide (somewhat difficult to achieve) Just don't issue error messages, simply refuse to perform the task (a somewhat "Apple" way of handling user input) Edit: the audience I have in mind is a rather broad user base that doesn't use the software too often and is not captive (i.e., not an in-house software or narrow community).   So, with HTML5 giving us local SQL databases on the client side, if you want to write a select or insert, you no longer have the ability to sanitize third party input by saying $buddski = mysql_real_escape_string($tuddski) because the PHP parser and MySQL bridge are far away. It's a whole new world of SQLite where you compose your queries and parse your results with JavaScript. But while you may not have your whole site's database go down, the user who gets his/her database corrupted or wiped due to a malicious injection attack is going to be rather upset. So, what's the best way, in pure JavaScript, to escape/sanitize your inputs so they will not wreak havoc with your user's built-in database? Scriptlets? specifications? Anyone?

  Hi I've written a basic SL4 application to capture audio data from the microphone using CaptureSource. The trouble is, it's raw PCM output - which means huge and uncompressed. Given that I need this application to run purely within a SL4 environment, how can I compress the PCM audio data into something that can be delivered to a remote server more easily? In conversation, people have suggested Speex and WMA for instance, but I haven't found any libraries or examples that work without requiring reference to DLL's that won't work in a SL4 project.   I have a site up that has a form on it. The form POSTs to a php script which then inserts the data into my database. The page has a charset=UTF-8 attribute in the <meta> tag, and the database is setup to use UTF-8. However, when I copy and paste characters from MS Word into the field, the output is messed up. For example, the quotes in I am using "Microsoft Word" '''' become I am using “Microsoft Word†???? in the database. Anyone have any idea why this might occur?

• setUserCredentials from Google data api is stuck

  Well, since I am facing some issues with OAuth implementation, I decided to go back to normal method where users will input their login id and password and I will use them in my code to validate their google account to fetch calendar information. So when user enters login id and password, the page is getting stuck. When I check the code, setUserCredentials is the method where it is getting stuck. But when I enter my login id and password and debug on development site, it works fine. There is no problem when I debug. And importantly , the problem appears for first time only, once I debug the code and next time I try it without breakpoint, it works fine. Does anyone know why setUserCredentials takes time or any way I can track why it is taking so time? I have asked the same question on Google data api forum, but nobody answered it.

If the subclass defines a method named 'get' I want to add a method alias 'GET' to the dictionary of the subclass. To not repeat myself I'd like to define this modifation routine in the base class. But if I check in the base class init method, there is no such method, since it is defined in the subclass. It will become more clear with some source code: class Base: def __init__(self): if hasattr(self, "get"): setattr(self, "GET", self.get) class Sub(Base): def get(): pass print(dir(Sub)) Output: ['__doc__', '__init__', '__module__', 'get'] It should also contain 'GET'.
