  • Second monitor stopped being recognized by Windows

    One of the developer PC's running Windows Vista Ultimate had the second monitor stop being recognized in Windows overnight. There were no hardware or driver changes at the time, though I have subsequently updated to the latest nVidia drivers (card is NVIDIA GeForce 210). The non-recognized monitor IS recognized during the boot sequence. In fact, only the "bad" one shows the POST or the Windows loading screen. At some point during Windows initialization after the loading screen disappears and before the logon screen appears, the active monitor switches. Any thoughts? UPDATE: When I open the Vista monitor properties window, I see my primary display and secondary display depicted. The primary one is portrayed as the regular blue box, but the secondary one is portrayed greyed-out. I have the option to "Extend desktop to this monitor", the only resolution is 800x600, and all of the advanced monitor properties are greyed out as well. If I opt to extend the desktop, the greyed-out box turns blue, when I then select Apply the screens flash as usual and I'm given the 15 second countdown to accept the new settings and when I do, everything returns to the previously broken state... secondary monitor is portrayed greyed-out again. At no point is the desktop shown on the secondary monitor.

  • Network driver for Hyper-V restore from Windows Home Server

    I have backed up Windows Server 2008 running virtualized on Hyper-V to a Windows Home Server 2008 SP1 (I know I should have backed up the VHD instead). Now I need to restore the contents of the VM from WHS. I have created a restore CD ISO and used it to create a new VM. It all works as advertised up to the point where the restore process wants to load the network drivers (it only finds 4 disk drivers on the restore CD. but no network drivers). So I created a virtual floppy and copied the contents of 'Home Server Drivers for Restore onto it. But no luck! I have tried moving the 4 subdirectories into the root of the floppy, but that didn't work either. Finally, I started another instance of the WS 2008 to identify the network driver that the virtualized instance is using (%WINDOWS%\system32\drivers\netvsc60.sys) and copied that file onto the virtual floppy, without success. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get networking working on a Hyper-V instance running off the Windows Home Server Restore CD? UPDATE: As suggested by delenda, I have added a legacy network adapter to my VM, and indeed I now get a network driver listed! However, the WHS it still not found, even after entering the home server name manually. PHS

The Audit will need to discover Hardware and software details of all machines attached to the network (including Printers) I do not want to have to install this application on each workstation. The audit app. needs to discover all the ip addresses of all the networked workstations. I have been prototyping this app for the last couple of months and have decided to try a new tack Is this possible? a). You have a windows network, min Windows XP sp3 and upwards b). Maximum of 100 Networked machines (if that matters) c). I need to remotely reboot each WINDOWS machine in turn on the entire network and get it to startup using UNIX, say knoppix for example! d). however the knoppix live cd is only available from one of the networked machines Questions...   • Shrinking windows and recovery partitions on the samsung new series 9

    I just bought a samsung NP900X3C, and as I was going to install linux, I noticed the windows partitions and recovery partitions occupied a major portion of the disk. The disk is a 128 GB SSD, and I want to keep the windows partition in order to play some games once in a while, but the windows disk is already 45GB full (with no installed programs) and the recovery partition is 20GB. That leaves under 60 GB for linux, which is not optimal, since that is what I'm going to be using most of the time, and there would be no room for games on the windows partition. There are also two small partitions that I don't know what are doing, one 100mb at the start of the disk that I'm guessing is some kind of boot partition, and one 5GB, that is described as an OS/2 hidden C: drive What I'm wondering is: can i delete the recovery partition? What about the mystical 5gb partition?   • How to find cause and of the SocketException with message that an established connection was aborted

    Hi All, I know the similar question may have been asked many times, but I want to represent the behavior I'm seeing and find if somebody can help predict the cause of this. I am writing a windows service which connects to other windows service over TCP. There are 100 user entities of this, and 5 connections per each. These users perform their tasks using their individual connections. The application goes on withough seeing this problem for 1 or 2 days. Or sometimes show the problem right after starting (-rarely). The best run I had was like 4 to 5 days without showing this exception. And after that application died or I had to stop it for various reasons. I want to know what can be causing this?   • Compiling Visual c++ programs from the command line and msvcr90.dll

    Hi, When I compile my Visual c++ 2008 express program from inside the IDE and redistribute it on another computer, It starts up fine without any dll dependencies that I haven't accounted for. When I compile the same program from the visual c++ 2008 command line under the start menu and redistribute it to the other computer, it looks for msvcr90.dll at start-up.   • perl multiple tasks problem

    I have finished my earlier multithreaded program that uses perl threads and it works on my system. The problem is that on some systems that it needs to run on, thread support is not compiled into perl and I cannot install additional packages. I therefore need to use something other than threads, and I am moving my code to using fork(). This works on my windows system in starting the subtasks. A few problems: How to determine when the child process exits? I created new threads when the thread count was below a certain value, I need to keep track of how many threads are running. For processes, how do I know when one exits so I can keep track of how many exist at the time, incrementing a counter when one is created and decrementing when one exits? Is file I/O using handles obtained with OPEN when opened by the parent process safe in the child process? I need to append to a file for each of the child processes, is this safe on unix as well. Is there any alternative to fork and threads? I tried use Parallel::ForkManager, but that isn't installed on my system (use Parallel::ForkManager; gave an error) and I absolutely require that my perl script work on all unix/windows systems without installing any additional modules.

  • Industry-style practices for increasing productivity in a small scientific environment

    Hi, I work in a small, independent scientific lab in a university in the United States, and it has come to my notice that, compared with a lot of practices that are ostensibly followed in the industry, like daily checkout into a version control system, use of a single IDE/editor for all languages (like emacs), etc, we follow rather shoddy programming practices. So, I was thinking of getting together all my programs, scripts, etc, and building a streamlined environment to increase productivity. I'd like suggestions from people on Stack Overflow for the same. Here is my primary plan.: I use MATLAB, C and Python scripts, and I'd like to edit, compile them from a single editor, and ensure correct version control. (questions/things for which I'd like suggestions are in italics) 1] Install Cygwin, and get it to work well with Windows so I can use git or a similar version control system (is there a DVCS which can work directly from the windows CLI, so I can skip the Cygwin step?). 2] Set up emacs to work with C, Python, and MATLAB files, so I can edit and compile all three at once from a single editor (say, emacs) (I'm not very familiar with the emacs menu, but is there a way to set the path to the compiler for certain languages? I know I can Google this, but emacs documentation has proved very hard for me to read so far, so I'd appreciate it if someone told me in simple language) 3] Start checking in code at the end of each day or half-day so as to maintain a proper path of progress of my code (two questions), can you checkout files directly from emacs? is there a way to checkout LabVIEW files into a DVCS like git? Lastly, I'd like to apologize for the rather vague nature of the question, and hope I shall learn to ask better questions over time. I'd appreciate it if people gave their suggestions, though, and point to any resources which may help me learn.

  • What languages should a microISV use to write commercial software?

    I've been writing software in Java for many years now, but it was always for internal applications that would be deployed to a server. I'd like to get into writing desktop applications now but I don't know where to start. I've written a few Java/Swing applications but again they were for internal use. My understanding is that Java and other semi-compiled and interpreted languages are too easy to reverse engineer, making them unsuitable for commercial software. I am aware that there are compilers for Java and some other interpreted language, but I've also heard that they are pricey and/or unreliable. Assuming I start a microISV and wish to develop and sell applications to a broad audience, what's my best bet? I would prefer something that can be written close to once, and compiled for different operating systems but I am not opposed to .NET and a Windows-only audience if other languages would compromise the experience (installation ease & user experience) in Windows. My only issue there is that I don't have a large starting budget and paying out the wazoo for the required development tools is not really in the cards.

  • Do you like languages that let you put the "then" before the "if"?

    I was reading through some C# code of mine today and found this line: if (ProgenyList.ItemContainerGenerator.Status != System.Windows.Controls.Primitives.GeneratorStatus.ContainersGenerated) return; Notice that you can tell without scrolling that it's an "if" statement that works with ItemContainerGenerator.Status, but you can't easily tell that if the "if" clause evaluates to "false" the method will return at that point. Realistically I should have moved the "return" statement to a line by itself, but it got me thinking about languages that allow the "then" part of the statement first. If C# permitted it, the line could look like this: return if (ProgenyList.ItemContainerGenerator.Status != System.Windows.Controls.Primitives.GeneratorStatus.ContainersGenerated); This might be a bit "argumentative", but I'm wondering what people think about this kind of construct. It might serve to make lines like the one above more readable, but it also might be disastrous. Imagine this code: return 3 if (x > y); Logically we can only return if x y, because there's no "else", but part of me looks at that and thinks, "are we still returning if x <= y? If so, what are we returning?" What do you think of the "then before the if" construct? Does it exist in your language of choice? Do you use it often? Would C# benefit from it?

    I'm trying to setup a pxe server with serva to deploy Windows 8.1 for a bunch of Elitepads. The server is working correctly for other PCs and virtual machines, but the Elitepads just won't. I've read some articles which suggest the pxe server needs Uefi support to work with this model, but no documentation on the subject from serva. Is there a way to setup UEFI support on serva? Are there any similar options to work around this without falling to Windows server?

  • Emulate Mouse Wheel with Synaptics Touchpad

    Is it possible to make the Synaptics Touchpad driver emulate a mouse wheel when scrolling? I can use the touch pad to scroll in Windows Explorer just fine but VMware does not support it. The mouse cursor changes to indicate that scrolling is active but the VMware guest will not respond to it. Since VMware supports the scroll wheel I am looking for a workaround.     I just installed my fresh Windows 7 and so far are not very happy with it. Much more problems than with Windows Vista. The latest in a series: My Task Scheduler crashes right at the moment when I boot my system.     Turns out that WebView Control in WinRT is much more limited than it’s counterpart in WPF/Silverlight. There are some great articles out there in how to extend the control in order for it to support navigation events and some other features. For a personal project I'm working on, I needed to grab cookies a Web Site generated for the user. Basically, after a user authenticated to a Web Site I needed to get the authentication cookies and generate some extra requests on her behalf. In order to do so, I’ve found this great article about a similar case using SharePoint and Azure ACS. I installed Network Monitor on this machine and did a filter for Kerberos traffic and found the following which corresponds to the timestamps in the security audit log. A Kerberos AS_Request Cname: CN=SQLInstanceName Realm:domain.local Sname krbtgt/domain.local Reply from DC: KRB_ERROR: KDC_ERR_C_PRINCIPAL_UNKOWN I then checked the security audit logs of the DC which responded and found the following: A Kerberos authentication ticket (TGT) was requested.
