• Static/Dynamic vs Strong/Weak

  I see these terms banded around all over the place in programming and I have a vague notion of what they mean. A search shows me that such things have been asked all over stack overflow in fact. As far as I'm aware Static/Dynamic typing in languages is subtly different to Strong/Weak typing but what that difference is eludes me. Different sources seem to use different different meanings or even use the terms interchangeably. I can't find somewhere that talks about both and actually spells out the difference. What would be nice is if someone could please spell this out clearly here for me and the rest of the world.

  Hi ! What CI server and Configuration Management tools I should use together for a truly development and deploy maintenance. There isn't the de facto rails sustainable environment, is there? Some assumptions: • code control version ok - git (de facto tool) • test framework ok - whatever (rspec is my choice) • code coverage and analysis ok - whatever (metric-fu, for example) • server stack ok - (Passenger for example) • issue tracker (RedMine) • etc, ... • Is the valid state domain of a program a regular language?

  If you look at the call stack of a program and treat each return pointer as a token, what kind of automata is needed to build a recognizer for the valid states of the program? As a corollary, what kind of automata is needed to build a recognizer for a specific bug state? My thought is that if these form regular languages than some interesting tools could be built around that. E.g. given a set of crash/failure dumps, automatically group them and generate a recognizer to identify new instances of know bugs.

• jquery ui dialog fixed positioning

  Hi, I needed the dialog to maintain its position fixed even if the page scrolled, so i used the extension at http://forum.jquery.com/topic/dialog-position-fixed-12-1-2010 but there's 2 problems with it: it flickers in IE and Firefox on page scroll (in Safari/Chrome it's fine) on closing and then reopening, it looses its stickyness and scrolls along with the page. • Parsing Wiki XML Dumps ver0.4 just got tough

  Hello, I am trying to parse Wikipedia XML Dump using "Parse-MediaWikiDump-1.0.4" along with "Wikiprep.pl" script. I guess this script works fine with ver0.3 Wiki XML Dumps but not with the latest ver0.4 Dumps. I get the following error. Can't locate object method "page" via package "Parse::MediaWikiDump::Pages" at wikiprep.pl line 390. Also, under the "Parse-MediaWikiDump-1.0.4" documentation @ http://search.cpan.org/~triddle/Parse-MediaWikiDump-1.0.4/lib/Parse/MediaWikiDump/Pages.pm, I read "LIMITATIONS Version 0.4 This class was updated to support version 0.4 dump files from a MediaWiki instance but it does not currently support any of the new information available in those files." Any work arounds would help me get to the next level. Note: one may wonder why cannot we directly use SAX or STAX parser instead, wikipedia dump is a 25GB plus single file, stack/memory issues are obvious. Hence, the above perl script resolves this issue but currently I am stuck with this version problem.

• Get a list of members of a WinNT group (C#)

  There are a couple of questions similar to this on stack overflow but not quite the same. I want to open, or create, a local group on a win xp computer and add members to it, domain, local and well known accounts. I also want to check whether a user is already a member so that I don't add the same account twice, and presumably get an exception. So far I started using the DirectoryEntry object with the WinNT:// provider. This is going ok but I'm stuck on how to get a list of members of a group? Anyone know how to do this? Or provide a better solution than using DirectoryEntry?

  Most UNIX regular expressions have, besides the usual *,+,? operators a backslash operator where \1,\2,... match whatever's in the last parentheses, so for example L=(a)b\1* matches the (non regular) language a^n b a^n On one hand, this seems to be pretty powerful since you can create (a*)b\1b\1 to match the language a^n b a^n b a^n which can't even be recognized by a stack automaton. On the other hand, I'm pretty sure a^n b^n cannot be expressed this way. Two questions: 1. Is there any literature on this family of languages (UNIX-y regular). In particular, is there a version of the pumping lemma for these? 2. Can someone prove (or perhaps disprove) that a^n b^n cannot be expressed this way? Thanks

  I know Singleton pattern has been discussed so much. But because I'm not fully understand the memory management mechanism in Objective-C, so when I combined Singleton implementation with multithreading, I got a big error and cost me a whole day to resolve it. I had a singleton object, let's call it ObjectX. I declared an object inside ObjectX that will detach a new thread, let's call that object objectWillSpawnNewThread, when I called [[ObjectX sharedInstance].objectWillSpawnNewThread startNewThread]; The new thread could not be executed correctly, and finally I found out that I should not declare the object objectWillSpawnNewThread inside the singleton class. Here are my questions: How does Objective-C allocate static object in the memory? Where does Objective-C allocate them(Main thread stack or somewhere else)? Why would it be failed if we spawn a new thread inside the singleton object? I had searched the Objective-C language [ObjC.pdf] and Objective-C memory management document, maybe I missed something, but I currently I could not find any helpful information.

  Hey, guys, I am just starting to wrap my head around objective C and I am doing a little project on Iphone. And I just encountered a weird problem. I had to deal with images in my program so I have a lot local variables declared like temp[width][height]. If I am not using NSThread to perform image processing, it works all fine. However, if I use NSThread, it'll keep giving me EXC_BAD_ACCESS on whenever I try to access a 2-D array declared like temp[widht][height]. So I have to allocate memory from heap in order to have a 2-D array. That'll solve the problem but I still don't get it. My first thought would be stack over flow, but it worked all fine with one thread. I just don't get it.

• Monitor RAM usage on CentOS and restart Apache at a certain usage

  Hi, I'm running a CentOS 5.3 server with a basic LAMP stack. I've optimized LAMP and my code to run efficiently as possible, but Apache has a memory leak somewhere that kills my server every hour or so. What is the best way to write a script that will monitor the memory usage and if it peaks over, say, 450MB kill all the Apache processes and restart Apache. I know C++/PHP and basic Linux server administration but I'm not familiar with Perl or bash scripting. I'd be open to learn any solutions, though, as a temporary solution while I find the issue.

  Hi, I am getting java.io.EOFException while reading a binary block from lucene index. I am storing java object as byte-array in lucene index field and reading it when hit occurs.   I know there are a lot of these topics around but none seem to help in my case, nor describe it exactly. The best similar one is aapt not found under the right path. My problem is that I can be using Eclipse for a whole evening programming, compiling and using my device, and then suddenly I get "error executing aapt" for my current project and ofcourse R.java isn't (properly) generated anymore. I then restart Eclipse and everything goes away. I'm seeing this once a day on average however. I've recently switched to amd64 and installed the latest Android-2.3 SDK and matching tools. I know that there is now a platform-tools folder that has an aapt version that should work SDK version independently. At first I had added this directory to my PATH, as instructed on the SDK website. I've also tried not adding it to my path and making a link platforms/android-9/tools so that every SDK version might use it's own old copy. Needless to say, platform-tools/aapt is there and has the right permissions, and I have been able to execute it on the command-line at any time. When I do write a faulty xml file or sorts, and appropriately get an error, I see an extra line that says "aapt: /lib32/libz.so.1: no version information available". I'm running a recent Gentoo linux system. I have everything installed to support x86 on amd64, but have re-emerged emul-linux-x86-baselibs and zlib just to be sure. The problem persists. I do see some pages that spell horror over some zlib bugs, but I'm not sure if that's related. I realize I'm not on the reference Ubuntu platform, but surely the difference cannot be that great? It might very well be a bug in aapt or the tools itself. Why would it suddenly stop working? I also experience that the ids in R.java were incorrect, namely that simple findViewById() code would give ClassCastExceptions because of mixed ids the one time, and then work perfectly without any changes bu only a "clean project", in the aftermath of a failing aapt. When I recently was trying to export a signed apk, I ran into another error message (full details from the Eclipse error view) regarding aapt I hadn't seen before. Note here too, that I can just restart Eclipse and can export apks again without problems, at least for a little while. I'm starting to think it is related to lack of memory on my system. The message "onvoldoende geheugen beschikbaar" means "insufficient memory available". I have also been seeing insufficient memory errors in DDMS when I'm dumping HPROF files. • How do I get the member to which my custom attribute was applied?

  I'm creating a custom attribute in C# and I want to do different things based on whether the attribute is applied to a method versus a property. At first I was going to do new StackTrace().GetFrame(1).GetMethod() in my custom attribute constructor to see what method called the attribute constructor, but now I'm unsure what that will give me. What if the attribute was applied to a property? Would GetMethod() return a MethodBase instance for that property? Is there a different way of getting the member to which an attribute was applied in C#? [AttributeUsage(AttributeTargets.Method | AttributeTargets.Property, AllowMultiple = true)] public class MyCustomAttribute : Attribute Update: okay, I might have been asking the wrong question. From within a custom attribute class, how do I get the member (or the class containing the member) to which my custom attribute was applied? Aaronaught suggested against walking up the stack to find the class member to which my attribute was applied, but how else would I get this information from within the constructor of my attribute?

I have made some of the changes like adding jboss.xml descriptors to EJBs and fixing application.xml of the EAR, but there are still problems when deploying the EAR. Is this a problem with parsing the jboss_2_4.dtd itself? or is it something worng with my descriptors for the EJB? When I try to validate the jboss_2_4.dtd in an XML editor it does complain about a syntax error at line 94:1 , which is the beginning of the first declaration, although it looks fine. Any ideas? • JBoss Seam - Jetty - Virtualhosting

  Hi all, I am trying to cutback on the memory usage of my server and would like to optimize the architecture. I currently deploy 2 separate web applications to Jetty 6.1.22 that correspond to different virtualhosts. They have pretty much the same application stack except one has fewer components and are styled differently (content, images, css, etc.). If I change my design pattern over to EJB / EAR + 2 WARS embedded, will that lower the memory consumption? Will that give me a single instance of JBoss Seam, Quartz, and all of my components?
