• Algorithm for Source Control System?

  I need to write a simple source control system and wonder what algorithm I would use for file differences? I don't want to look into existing source code due to license concerns. I need to have it licensed under MPL so I can't look at any of the existing systems like CVS or Mercurial as they are all GPL licensed. Just to give some background, I just need some really simple functions - binary files in a folder. no subfolders and every file behaves like it's own repository. No Metadata except for some permissions. Overall really simple stuff, my single concern really is how to store only the differences of a file from revision to revision without wasting too much space but also without being too inefficient (Maybe store a full version every X changes, a bit like Keyframes in Videos?)

• How to handle concurrency control in dynamic data?

  I've been quite impressed with dynamic data and how easy and quick it is to get a simple site up and running. I'm planning on using it for a simple internal HR admin site for registering people's skills/degrees/etc. I've been watching the intro videos at www.asp.net/dynamicdata and one thing they never mention is how to handle concurrency control. It seems that DD does not handle it right out of the box (unless there is some setting I haven't seen) as I manually generated a change conflict exception and the app failed without any user friendly message. Anybody know if DD handles it out of the box? Or do you have to somehow build it into the site?

  Hi, I have an ASP.Net site, in which I am using a ListView with a Datapager. Apparently there is a bug with the Datapager, where it crashes if there is an empty ampersand (&) in the querystring. This is a known issue: https://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=357344&wa=wsignin1.0#tabs I see that there is a workaround given, but did not understand how to implement it. Can somebody point me in the right direction? Also, I see that this issue is marked as resolved. Any idea where I can find the updated version of this control? Wild Thing

• WCF Mono - BasicHttpBinding with SSL

  I'm trying to port an existing WCF client application to run on Linux under Mono. Right now I'm testing everything out, figuring out what works on Mono and what doesn't. The client makes a super simple call over basicHttpBinding. It works great, until I enable SSL (that is, specify BasicHttpSecurityMode.Transport in the binding). Running on .NET in Windows, it works great Running on Mono on Ubuntu 9.10 / Mono 2.6 I get the following error: Exception in async operation: System.Net.WebException: Error getting response stream (Write: The authentication or decryption has failed.): SendFailure --- System.IO.IOException: The authentication or decryption has failed. --- Mono.Security.Protocol.Tls.TlsException: Invalid certificate received from server. Error code: 0xffffffff800b010a I've read the Mono security FAQ here: http://www.mono-project.com/FAQ:_Security; however the SSL certificate on the server is from a root CA (a purchased certificate) - issued by Equifax Secure Certificate Authority. I ran the TlsTest tool on the Ubuntu install against the .svc URL and there are no problems/errors. Also I can hit the service fine in Firefox (no security warnings). What am I missing? • How to connect to a queue manager with ssl enabled server connection channel when authentication is

  I am trying to write a java application connecting to server connection channel with SSL enabled. So far, I have been successfully connected to the channel by setting authentication to 'optional'. However, when I set it to be 'required', the connection fails. Here is what I did: Create key db for queue manager and keystore for the java client user. Create key/self-signed certificates for the queue manager and the client user, with names prefixed ibmwebspheremq. Export, exchange and import certificates for the queue manager and the client. (I did answered 'yes' when being asked whether I trust the queue manager cert). The location and password to the truststore and keystore are set to point to the same keystore at the client side, where the orgininal created client user key and the imported queue manager key are. With other settings being the same, if I switch back to 'optional' authentication, the connection works. I think there is something I understand incorrectly about this ssl authenticaion but cannot figure out what. Could someone kindly help me?

• Emailing an excel sheet with SSL in Python

  Hi...this is my first post so let me know if there are any common courtesies I should know about. I just started programming 8 months ago, so I am fairly new. I have been doing some projects to get better. A project I'm working on now creates an Excel sheet from inputted data. It's in Python, which I just started learning a couple of weeks ago. I'm attempting to embed part of this Excel sheet into an email, sent from my school address. I have spent hours looking this up, and to no avail. There are two problems I am asking for help with: 1) I have figured out how to send an email from my GMail account, but not from my school address. My school email uses SSL port 465, which I have tried to use, but to no avail. Unfortunately, I have been having a problem setting up outgoing email for this account on my iPhone as well. It may be related? Does anyone know of common issues relating to outgoing email with SSL and Python? 2) Excel has an option of saving a sheet as a HTML. When doing so, I copy and pasted the HTML source and emailed it as an attachment. Unfortunately, the colored text did not transfer over. Does anyone know of a better way of using Python to send an excel sheet embedded in an email? Thanks for your help!

• make java plugin use the browser certificates

  We have a java applet that communicates with a spring application running on tomcat and using spring's http invoker. We want to secure the applet using ssl with client authentication, we have a jsp page for login, after successful login the applet loads. The jsp page is secured with ssl, when the applet loads the http invoker inside the applet is doing a second handshake apparently not related to the browser handshake, OK, I don't mind that, but I want the java plugin to use browser certificates and client certificates but its not, I have to load the client certificate to the java plugin also using the java ControlPanel, and if my server's certificate is self signed then I have to load the server certificate also to the java ControlPanel and to the nrowser. Another thing is when the applet starts loading the java plugin pops a dialog asking for the client keystore password, I would like to avoid that. So to conclude: I would like the java plugin to use the browser's trusted certificates and client certificates, and to avoid the keystore password dialog that pops up. I have googled for it for two days and can't find any clue of how to accomplish that. I will appreciate any help. I'm using jdk 1.6.0 u23 and firefox 3.6.13.

  I have a composite drop down calendar user control that consists of a textbox and and calendar image and a validation control. I expose a property called "TextBox" on the usercontrol which returns a reference to the textbox used within the control. This is the textbox that the user enters the date into. In the ASPX page, I have an instance of this usercontrol: <uc1:DropDownCalendar ID="dtmDateFirstEntry" runat="server" Required="True" /> In my code behind, I want to detect when a user has tabbed off of the textbox and, using an UpdatePanel, referesh an appropriate message depending on the date that was specified. I didn't think that the trigger control had to be within the UpdatePanel. I thought that was the whole point of adding the trigger. How do I refresh this update panel changes to the text in the date usercontrol. Next I will have to add other triggers to trigger the refreshing of the Update Panel from other controls scattered across the page, so clearly all of the trigger sources cannot be within the UpdatePanel.

In my app, I have satellite assemblies which are not in the same folder as the exe, and that causes me some trouble with FullTrust, as explained here. In order to solve that problem, I wish to use .NET 4.0 whose Code Access Security Policy should allow my satellite assemblies to be FullyTrusted. So my question is: is just installing the framework enough, or do I need to rebuild the solution with VS2010? Thanks

The customer is than bound to the user control. When the name template is instantiated in the container, the customer object is not yet available, but I need to access its name because it needs to get parsed before. protected void Page_Init(object sender, EventArgs e) { if (nameTemplate != null ) { // customer is null here, it is avaiable only after Page_Init... NameContainer container = new NameContainer(customer.Id, Parse(customer.Name)); nameTemplate.InstantiateIn(container); placeHolder.Controls.Add(container); } } Question: How can I access properties set for the user control BEFORE the template container is instantiated? • Can't connect to HTTPS using X509 client certificate

  Hi - I'm new to cryptography and I'm a bit stuck: I'm trying to connect (from my development environment) to a web service using HTTPS. The web service requires a client certificate - which I think I've installed correctly. They have supplied me with a .PFX file. In Windows 7, I double clicked the file to install it into my Current User - Personal certificate store. I then exported a X509 Base-64 encoded .cer file from the certificate entry in the store. It didn't have a private key associate with it. Then, in my app, I'm attempting to connect to the service like this: var certificate = X509Certificate.CreateFromCertFile("xyz.cer")); var serviceUrl = "https://xyz"; var request = (HttpWebRequest) WebRequest.Create(serviceUrl); request.ClientCertificates.Add(certificate); request.Method = WebRequestMethods.Http.Post; request.ContentType = "application/x-www-form-urlencoded"; I get a 502 Connection failed when I connect. Is there anything you can see wrong with this method? Our production environment seems to work with a similar configuration, but it's running Windows Server 2003. Thanks!

Software development has been here from at most 1960's and I honestly can't imagine working with codebase without version control. How could it happen that version control software emerged so lately compared to software development?

• Managing My Database in Source Control

  As I am working with a new database project (within VS2008), and as I have never developed a database from scratch, I immediately began looking into how to manage a database within source control (in this case, Subversion). I found some information on SO, including this post: Keeping development databases in multiple environments in sync. One of the answers in particular pointed to a number of a links, all of which had good, useful information. I was reading a series of posts by K. Scott Allen which describe how he manages database change. From my reading (and please pardon the noobishness of my question), it seems as though the database itself is never checked into a repository. Rather, scripts that can build the database, along with test data (which is also populated from scripts) is checked into the repository. Ultimately, this means that, when a developer is testing his or her app, these scripts, which are part of the build process, are run. This ensures that the database is up-to-date, but is also run locally from every developer's machine. This makes sense to me (if I am indeed reading that correctly). However, if I am missing something, I would appreciate correction or additional guidance. In addition, another question I wanted to ask - does this also mean that I should NOT check in the mdf or ldf files that are created from Visual Studio? Thanks for any help and additional insight.   Hello Guys, This blog has been quite for few days. Because i was busy with some personal and professional work both and that’s why i am not able to work on writing blog posts which i have discovered in last few days. Here is one features of asp.net 4.0 that I am going to explain. As a web developer we all know about session. Without the use of session any database driven web application is incomplete. As we all know unlike windows form web forms are state less so when user interacts with web application we need to maintain state amongst web pages and we are using session for maintaining state between web pages for each users. ASP.NET is also provide same kind of session state functionalities. ASP.Net Session state identify request coming for same user and same browser for specific session time out interval and its preserves values in session for that specific time intervals and that’s help us in maintaining state amongst web pages for a specific user. ASP.NET Session state allows us to store session in three way 1. IncProc 2. Session State Service 3. SQL Server. In SQL Server mode it will store session in SQL Server tables instead of storing it in Server Memory. ASP.NET 4.0 provides a new property called Compression Enabled that means when we store values in serialized form in SQL Server with GZip Compression and that results in better performance. For that you need to store property in web.config like following. <sessionState allowCustomSqlDatabase="true" sqlConnectionString="data source=Server;Initial Catalog=aspnetsessionstatedb" compressionEnabled="true" /> That’s it now with the use of this property you can have better performance when you are storing large amount of data in session.But still you need to decide that why you want to stored large amount of data in session because its against best practices.
