• Installing Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1

  As has become customary when the product team releases a new patch, SP or version I like to document the install. This post seams almost redundant as I had no problems, but I think that is as valuable to other thinking of installing the Service Pack as all the problems that we sometimes get. As per Brian's post I am Installing Visual Studio Team Foundation Server Service Pack 1 first and indeed as this is a single server local deployment I need to install both. If I only install one it will leave the other product broken. Figure: Hopefully this will be more uneventful It takes a little while for your system to be checked to see what components need updating. On my main computer this was pretty quick, but on the laptop it took some time. Figure: There are a lot of components to update With this update also comes an update to .NET as well as many other components. Figure: I downloaded the full 1.5GB’s, but you could do a web install It depends on how good you internet connection is to how long it would take to download, but as I am now in the US I decided not to trust the internet connection speeds. It took around 30-40 minutes to download the full thing which is a little slow. Figure: I did not need to download, but that would increase the install time So on my main computer again this was fast, but again on my netbook this took a little while. Figure: The actual install took around 30-40 minutes (2 hours on netbook) I was pretty impressed with the speed of the install, and as Team Explore is now out of the box with Visual Studio 2010 I don’t get the problem of the SP being installed before Team Explorer and having a disjointed experience Figure: As I suspected, no problems with the install Figure: Checking in Visual Studio shows that all the servicing points were successful This was an easy experience even if the SP was over 1.5GB’s to download Hopefully I will be discovering things that work better for a good while to come, as well as not seeing holes in the product that I had no encountered yet. • Why does my screen dim on a desktop installation of Windows 7?

  Periodically, while using my Windows 7 Pro desktop installation, the screen suddenly dims. The brightness is about 75% normal (estimate). It's as if I am in a power-saving mode on a laptop running on batteries. But this is a full desktop installation. I know it is not a hardware glitch or monitor adjustment issue because the Windows cursor is still bright white while everything else goes dim. The Control Panel Power Options have not been changed. They are set to "Balanced [active]" and I have tried restoring the default settings. Flipping through the power and display settings, everything looks "normal." There is no screen saver or power-off-after settings apparent. Rebooting the system resets everything to full brightness but I can't find a way to restore it in Windows or to keep it from happening in the first place. Suggestions?

• Fake links cause crawl error in Google Webmaster Tools

  Google reported Crawl Errors last week on my largest site though Webmaster Tools. Here is the message: Google detected a significant increase in the number of URLs that return a 404 (Page Not Found) error. Investigating these errors and fixing them where appropriate ensures that Google can successfully crawl your site's pages. The Crawl Errors list is now full of hundreds of fake links like these causing 16,519 errors so far: Note that my site does not even have a search.html and is not related to any of the terms shown in the above image. Inspecting sources for one of those links, I can see this is not simply an isolated source but a concerted effort: Each of the links has a few to a dozen sources all from different, seemingly unrelated sites. It is completely baffling as to why would someone to spending effort doing this. What are they hoping to achieve? Is this an attack? Most importantly: Does this have a negative effect on my side? Could it negatively impact my ranking? If so, what to do about it? The few linking pages I looked at are full of thousands of links to tons of sites and have no contact information and do not seem like the kind of people who would simply stop if asked nicely! According to Google Webmaster Tools, these errors have appeared in a span of 11 days. No crawl errors were being reported previously.

• Cannot get temperatures in Dell Studio 1558

  I could never get proper temperatures on my Dell Studio 1558. lm-sensors and acpi give wrong readings. But I always have this problem. I had updated to the latest BIOS from Windows a couple of weeks ago, will updating from Ubuntu change anything? CORRECTION: hddtemp's readings do change. Its now at 45.

• Resolution stuck in 640x480 in grub, 11.04 and 12.04

  I have three operating systems on my machine, Windows 7x64, Ubuntu 11.10 and 12.04 both x64 as well. All three were running at full resolution for my monitor, as well as in the Grub 1.99 boot screen. After booting into Windows, I rebooted my machine and found my Grub resolution was suddenly 640x480. Booting into both versions of Ubuntu, I find myself stuck at that resolution as well. I made no driver changes recently, and hadn't even booted into the 11.10 build in a month or more. I've gone through both proprietary Nvidia driver options for my card (GeForce 9800GT) as well as the open source drivers in 12.04 to no avail. I can't figure out what could have caused this change in both versions of Ubuntu and Grub simultaneously. Windows 7 is unaffected so I think that safely rules out hardware failure. EDIT Ok, so I couldn't boot an graphical live disks, I tried ubuntu 12.04 i386 and x64 as well as 12.10 beta x64 and all of them would flash the initial logo, go to a blank screen with a flashing cursor in the upper left and then my display would die. I managed to boot 12.04 server and get into recovery. I reinstalled grub and went into recovery mode for my 12.04 build. If I boot in safe graphics mode I can get 1280x768, but as soon as I reboot it's broken again. I've tried reinstalling the nvidia drivers and that leaves me with a system stuck at max 640x480. None of these changes have had any impact on the 11.10 build, which is still stuck at 640x480 Given that I can push a somewhat higher resolution in 12.04, and full resolution in windows 7 I'm pretty convinced it's not an issue of my monitor failing. It must be something to do with the graphics drivers. I can't figure out what could be the issue though. I'm especially perplexed that I can't boot any live images

• USB device not accepting address

  I have a series of machines that I am building for work that have usb card readers. When I boot them I get a long series of messages: ... [ 2347.768419] hub 1-6:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 6 [ 2347.968178] usb 1-6.6: new full-speed USB device number 10 using ehci_hcd [ 2352.552020] usb 1-6.6: device not accepting address 10, error -32 [ 2352.568421] hub 1-6:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 6 [ 2352.768179] usb 1-6.6: new full-speed USB device number 12 using ehci_hcd [ 2357.352033] usb 1-6.6: device not accepting address 12, error -32 ... On some older machines this only takes a few attempts before the card reader finally accepts an address, while on newer machines it can take many minutes. Changing hardware is not an option and plugging the usb card reader into a different port is only an option for the older manchines. This was a problem under 11.04 and I am now running the 12.04 beta and its still happening. Is there something I can do in the software (a udev rule perhaps?) that would fix this? Any advice appreciated. I'm happy to provide more details if you need them.

• Directory error when trying to create a new user

  I added a second user 'shirley' in Settings - User Accounts, and set a password. The account type is Standard. In 11.04, this worked and I logged in and had a functioning desktop for this user. How is this done in 11.10? When I try to log in as this user I have this error: Nautilus could not create the required folder "/home/shirley/.config/nautilus". Before running Nautilus, please create the following folder, or set permissions such that Nautilus can create it. The only option then is to click OK, this dumps me out to full-screen Nautilus, like this: There is no launcher or visible way to start any programs. Print screen doesn't take a screengrab. The desktop is similar to this question but I get no terminal when I press CTRL+ALT+T. I have to press CTRL+ALT+F2 and restart from the terminal to get out of this. This answer is to install gnome-system-tools. Shouldn't I be able to add a second user with the default install? EDIT: I tried the deluser+adduser suggestion, there was no change after trying it. Here is what I got: tom@desktop:~$ sudo deluser shirley [sudo] password for tom: Removing user `shirley' ... Warning: group `shirley' has no more members.   I recently installed DHCP on my 2008R2 Server and now Backup Exec and WBAdmin/WSB is having System State issues. Essentially, after some research, I came across a handy tool called VSHADOW which has allowed me to output all the files (and their respective directories) to a text file. And hooray, I think I found the problem: * WRITER "Dhcp Jet Writer" - WriterId = {be9ac81e-3619-421f-920f-4c6fea9e93ad} - InstanceId = {0ed0a8f4-19b0-414d-a3a8-d51d6f4ac8e0} - Supports restore events = TRUE - Writer restore conditions = VSS_WRE_IF_REPLACE_FAILS - Restore method = VSS_RME_RESTORE_AT_REBOOT - Requires reboot after restore = TRUE - Excluded files: - Component "Dhcp Jet Writer:\C:_Windows_system32_dhcp\dhcp" - Name: 'dhcp' - Logical Path: 'C:_Windows_system32_dhcp' - Full Path: '\C:_Windows_system32_dhcp\dhcp' The logical path and Full Path for DHCP is completely wrong. However I can't find where I would change this path, I assume in the registry but I've had no luck finding the key !

• TightVNC (or any VNC) client windows scaling

  Hi, I am currently using TightVNC to connect to multiple remote hosts in LAN. I start 16 VNC instances, set Scaling by: Auto (in connection options display), set Hextile encoding, and then select all windows and use Tile Horizontally, which covers my entire screen with VNC screens. It all works sort of nice, except that desktop interaction is really slow when there are more then 4 VNC clients. My question is, does VNC client (not just TightVNC, but any compatible client) support some kind of smart scaling option, so that client tells server something along the lines of: "Okay, I'm displaying your entire screen in a window size 300x225 px, so can you please start sending encoded images on that resolution?", at which point interactiveness of open connections dramatically increase, and when I decide to go full screen on some connection, client and server re-negotiate and server starts sending full resolution images again? • Practical tips when transitioning to xmonad?

  I like the idea and concept of xmonad, however I still keep going back to gnome after an hour or so. This feels like when I first tried to learn vim, but I've gotten past the learning curve point and can't live without vim nowadays. I'm sure the time will come for xmonad too, but I was wondering if current xmonad users can provide transitional tips? FYI, I'm on dual monitors ( 19 inch and 17 inch ). Example of an issue I'm having while in this "transitional" stage: How do you manage keeping the browser and other programs that are most commonly used in full screen mode, since by default I think it opens up in a small tile that takes up a portion of the screen? Do you just shortcut it to make it open full screen, or do you actually not maximize it? Or are there advanced methods through preferences in the conf file, making certain programs take up X space?

  What's the simplest way to shrink transaction log file on a mirrored production database? I have to, as my disk space is running out. I will make a full database backup before I do this, so I don't need to keep anything from the transaction log (right? I have daily full database backup, probably never need point-in-time restore, though I'll keep the option open if I can - that's all the .ldf is really for, correct?). (Hope this isn't an exact duplicate, I read a lot of questions but couldn't find this exact scenario elsewhere).

• Tell me why I should bother using Linux if it's all about problems getting the OS to install or work properly? [closed]

  Why should I spend day's trying to get Ubuntu to either install and/or work properly? I'm using an Acer Timeline X laptop and if I install 10.04 the wireless doesn't work, and if I try installing 11.04 it either won't install, or if it installs it's full of bugs causing my computer to freeze all the time. So please, I'm all open ears. Someone give me one or two good reasons to continue wasting time (in hope it eventually works) before I decide to focus my time on other things like productivity (using Windows like I've been doing successfully the last 10 years). This is the second time I give Ubuntu a try, the first time was in 2010 using Ubuntu Studio and Ubuntu Desktop, and it ended with me shifting back to Windows since I had spent more time getting everything to work than actually working while trying Ubuntu. I really don't understand why it needs to be like this. Why go on trying when all I see is forums full of discussions about problems which people are having difficulties fixing. Or maybe there is just one special type of computer which works well with Linux? Would very much like to know which computer that is. • Developing momentum on open source projects

  Hi I've been struggling to develop momentum contributing to open source projects. I have in the past tried with gcc and contributed a fix to libstdc++ but it was a once off and even though I spent months in my spare time on the dev mailing list and reading through things I just never seemed to develop any momentum with the code. Eventually I unsubscribed and got my free time back and uncluttered my mailbox. Like a lot of people I have some little open source defunct projects lying around on the net, but they're not large and I'm the only contributor. At the moment I'm more interested in contributing to a large open source project and want to know how people got started because I find it difficult while working full time to develop any momentum with the code base. Other more regular contributors, who are on the project full-time, are able to make changes at will and as result enter that positive feedback cycle where they understand the code and also know where it's heading. It makes the barrier to entry higher for those that come along later. My questions are to people who actively contribute to large opensource projects, like the Linux kernel, or gcc or clang/llvm or anything else with say a developer head count of more than 10. How did you get started? Was there a large chunk of time in your life that you just could dedicate to working on the project? I know in Linus's case he had a chunk of time (6 months) to get it started. What barriers to entry did you encounter? Can you describe the initial stages of the time spent with the project, from when you had little understanding of the code to when you understood enough to commit regularly. Thanks

• We are moving an Access based corporate front-end into a Web-based App

  We have an enterprise application with a front end written in Microsoft Access 2003 that has evolved over the past 6 years. The back end data, and a fair amount of back-end logic is contained within several Microsoft SQL Server databases. This front end app consists of around 180 forms, and over 120,000 lines of code, and interacts with VB.Net DLLs that support various critical functions used by our sales force. The current system makes use of 3 monitors to display various information; the Access app uses COM+ to control Microsoft Outlook and Internet Explorer for various purposes. The Access front end sometimes occupies 2 screens, automatically resizing itself based on Windows API-reported screen dimensions. The app also uses a Google map to present data to our agents, and allows two-way interactivity with the map through COM+ connectivity to JavaScript contained in the Google map. At the urging of senior management, we are looking to completely rewrite this application using some web-based technology, such as ASP.Net or perhaps a LAMP stack (the thinking with the LAMP stack thing is "free" is pretty cheap). We want to move to a web-based app so we can eliminate the dependency on our physical location for hiring new sales force members. Currently, our main office is full to capacity, and we need to continue growing the company. Does anyone have any thoughts on what would be the best technology to use for a web-based app of this magnitude? Keeping in mind the app is dependent on back-end services on our existing infrastructure. The app handles financial data and personal customer data, among other things. [I've looked at Best practices for moving large MS Access application towards .Net? and read the answers, and most of the comments. Interesting reading, and has some valid points, but our C.O.O. and contracted Software Architect are pushing for a full web-based app, not a .Net Windows App]

• My site has crashed .. anyone have some info ?

  Hi all , I booked a domain name for my website from a hosting provider .I gave the domain name , along with ftp details to a freelancer to develop the site in wordpress . the freelancer developped and he got full payment , and the site and site was working fine ,etc .. From that time , I did not change the admin logging as well as ftp details , this means that such info is still known to the freelancer .. A week ago , I found that some links in my site was not working .. I sent him a mail about this , and he said that he will fix it if i give him ftp details . and I did so , next I found that the entire site is gone . then he sent me a mail , without I asked him , and he he said that there have been someone who got access to my server , and he removed all files of my site and he installed drupal instead .and that he can rebuild the site in one day , by charging a full fee of 250 usd again .. Can anyone know what I can do in this situation , to find who did such act , could it be the host provider or that freelancer ,, and if there is a possibility to have my site back top the server .. • User accounts in FTP

  I have an FTP server(proftpd on debian) that I'm going to allow a couple friends access to, and I want some safety nets in place, just in case. These are some of the things I'd like to do: Jail the accounts to their home directories and impose a cap on the amount of data they can upload Allow them access to a shared folder(via symlink or something) where they have full access(Also with a storage cap, but larger) Allow my own account full access to the system(Using groups I guess) Not allow anonymous access, or allow it with its own folder, separate from the shared user folder Currently, I've got the accounts set up and jailed, but it seems like the symlink that I put in is not allowing them to visit the shared folder. I suppose this has to do with them not having read permissions anywhere but their own home directories, or maybe it's something else, I'll continue to look into it and provide any information that is requested. Is what I'm trying to do possible? Any tips or resources that you can share are appreciated. Thanks.

• Filesystem to quickly get recent modifications

  Hello, I've got relatively big filesystem (ext4) with lots of small files and I'd like to backup it. Making full backups often is not feasible to me so I want to have a way to make differential/incremental backups (differential preferred). But... this is laptop, and scanning for changed files takes lots of time. My questions: 1) Is it possible to get list of files changed since some date from ext4's journal? I know it wasn't designed with this idea in mind, and it might be too small for bigger timespans, but maybe it is somehow possible? 2) Is it possible to monitor filesystem modifications and maintain a list of changed files reliably? I think I could use inotify, but this might be too slow to monitor full filesystem and might be unreliable. (by reliable I mean either I get all modifications since last backup (and this list is not missing anything) or an error message). Laptop runs Debian unstable.

• does windows incremental backup include system state backup?

  I'm managing my very small office server with windows server 2008. since I have only one server, and the user group is really small. I made the first hdd into 2 partitions. one (C:) for windows and Active directory, another (D:) for tomcat and database. I'm doing incremental back C: and D: daily to hdd2 (E:) using windows server backup. is it enough to let me do fully restore my server in case of disaster? I ask this because I have read there is also a system state backup, and I also have to do that periodically in order to get AD back? isn't it with incremental/full backup I can do full bare-metal recovery?

• Is it possible to use the IE10 App without making Internet Explorer the default browser?

  Windows 8 comes with two versions of Internet Explorer: the normal desktop version, which looks just like IE9, and the Modern UI version, which is a full-screen tablet-style app. By default, links opened in desktop mode open in desktop IE, and links opened in Modern UI apps open in the full-screen app. When you set a new default browser (like Google Chrome, which has a Modern UI mode now), you can no longer access IE10 in the Modern UI at all - the tile disappears from the start screen, and there's no way to manually invoke it. I don't use IE10 much, but I'd like to have access to it in Metro mode, because it's handy for testing things out. I don't want to have IE be my default browser though. Is there any way to get the IE10 "App" to show up without setting IE to be the default browser everywhere?
