I'm looking for a tool to manage the maintenance tasks on a Windows PC. Things like disk defrag, antivirus, update software and any other maintenance.
This should not be an all-in-one solutions, with these features built in. Rather, it should be a framework to automate other tools (like CCleaner, Defragler etc.).
Many tasks should be run periodically (with different frequencies). I'm looking for one tool to manage all these tasks.
I would like to set an alias on my local PC for a network machine. I know that it can be done by adding an entry in the hosts file as long as the IP address of the machine is also specified. However, the problem is that IPs are dynamically assigned by a DHCP server so I don't know for sure the IP address. Is there a way to define just an alias based on the machine's network name?
P.S.: I'm running Windows Server 2008 R2.
Okay i have what may seem a really easy to solve problem but i've been trying to solve it for days.
I'm trying to deploy a asp.net MVC2 application to a IIS 5.1 server running Windows XP Pro. (it's actually the default MVC2 app)
However when i deploy, the only thing i'm able to see is a Directory listing. I tried a lot of stuff but can't get it to display anything other than the directory listing.
hopefully i'm just a noob who forgot to add something, thanks for your answer :)
In Windows 7, when my laptop comes back from standby, my external mouse and keyboard cannot be used to "login" or "unlock" my station. Once I'm logged in again, they are recognized and work properly.
Is this a security feature that I can turn off?
Update: My laptop is a Dell XPS-1330M, and the keyboard is made by Dell. The mouse is a simple Microsoft mouse.
Is there a way to run multiple DNS server instances on the same Windows 2003 installation?
We have to support multiple development teams coding in separate environments using the same server names that resolve to different IPs depending on the team.
These are for internal development so server failing, etc is not an issue. I'm looking for a way to avoid setting up a server 2003 DNS server per environment.
A problem has been deteceted and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to ypur computer.
The problem seems to be caused by the following file : Fastfat.SYS
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

Having an issue migrating a wordpress-mu installation that I have running with cas authentication enabled (using wpcas and phpcas 1.1.0) from apache on an ubuntu machine to IIS on a windows 2008 machine. While CAS authed fine under linux, I'm getting a "CAS Authentication failed! You were no authenticated." page that pops up whenever I enter in a correct login.
Anyone know whats up or if there are some logs I can look at to get more info?
Sql Server on Windows Server 2008:
Overnight, fullbackups taking 7-10 hours instead of 1-3
transaction logs taking 4-5 minutes instead of 1 minute
Query optimization taking 3x longer
I'm feeling like a disk in my Raid Array (raid5) is faulty or the raid controller or network card, Rackspace is telling me everything is fine.
Any ideas on what/how I need to check?
I have a Lenovo ThinkPad laptop and running Windows Vista. Previously I could send and receive files between my phone and my laptop but now it won't work. Every time I select a file, right-click and select "Send to", and select "Bluetooth devices", the box appears but there's nothing there. Even if I turn my laptop's Bluetooth on, my phone can't find it and vice versa.
What could be the problem and how can I fix this?
Hi
at work, due to our network configuration, i cannot ssh external servers. We are on a Windows environment. I need to ssh a server of mine, but i can only exit from our LAN via port 88.
How could I use my home MacOs box to accept an http connection from my home computer and route it via ssh to the server i need to' connect to?
Thanks.
I have the choice of setting up a system with two SSD Drives in Raid 1 mode as my boot drive for Windows 7 64-bit. With the Program Files and User Folders moved to a Second regular HD Drive also configured using Raid 1.
Or
Setup a single SSD Drive (120 GB or 256 gb) as a cache Drive using Intel Rapid Storage Technology combined with two normal hard drives configured as Raid 1.
Which setup would have the faster hard drive performance over the life of the computer?
I have a bunch of .to6-Files that get opened without a problem with FileMaker Server 9 on Mac.
Now I copied them to a Windows box with FMS9, and they are not even detected by the admin console. Is there anything Mac-specific about ".TO6"-Files?
I ran across a situation at work the other day where we were trying to move a pile of .url files on a Windows XP machine to bookmarks under Firefox on Mac OS X 10.5.8. It proved very frustrating, as we didn't have access to the source machine anymore (where we could have exported the bookmarks properly).
Does anyone have a solution for that one?
I am purchasing a keyboard without a numeric pad (a Cooler Master Storm Rapid but my question probably applies to any keyboard without a numeric pad)
I very occasionally use the numeric pad on my current keyboard, in conjunction with the Alt key, to enter special characters.
If the keyboard does not make any special provision for this (no obvious keypad overlay on main section of keyboard, nothing on this subject in user-guide) - is there any way to retain this Alt+nnn capability under Windows-7?
I have a server, and windows vista, 64-bit, 4gb ram. Sometimes the server randomly drops into the page file, and disconnects everyone who was online. Only after I click the cmd.exe window does it comes back out. How do I mark a program as not eligible for the page file?
If this is relevant, I'm using a Minecraft server with the following command line arguments:
java -server -Xmx256M -Xms256M -XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC -XX:+DisableExplicitGC -XX:+UseAdaptiveGCBoundary -XX:MaxGCPauseMillis=200 -XX:-UseGCOverheadLimit -XX:SurvivorRatio=16 -Xnoclassgc -XX:UseSSE=3 -XX:ParallelGCThreads=3 -jar minecraft_server.jar nogui
My users keep unplugging our meeting rooms computers network connection.
As i can't check the computers every time a meeting ends, i'd like to find a tool, preferably running on windows, that can monitor some cisco switch ports state, and every time a cable is being unplugged, send me an email.
I know that some monitoring solutions can do that already, but i wonder if something simplier (and preferably cheap / free of course !) exists.
My servers are currently running IIS 7 (windows 2008). Is there any way to get IIS 7.5 without upgrading to 2008 R2?
The reason I ask is that they are 32 bit servers and there is no upgrade path from 32 bit 2008 to 2008 R2.
What antivirus would you recommend for computers used for windows development. Would you use an antivirus for these users? These users compile quite often and therefore read and write tons of files. If I deploy a slow performing antivirus, they will not be happy.
Hello
There are a couple of videos on the Web whose soundtracks I'd like to rip so I can listen to them at the gym, but all of the web apps like KeepVid that I tried failed downloading them.
As a work-around, I'll just play the videos and record the soundtrack for later listening.
Are there good applications for Windows, free or affordable, that will let me record whatever is being played on the soundcard?
Thank you.
I foolishly used Dupemerge to change all my duplicate files into hard links. Now Windows XP is not running right, eg, explorer won't start.
Is there a utility which would traverse the filesystem looking for hard links, copy the file, delete the original link, and rename the copy, keeping the original attributes and name?
I want to add a dependency to my service so that it only tries to start after most of the Windows services have started. Can anyone recommend such a service that is unlikely to have been disabled for security reasons on corporate sites. As my service needs the networking services up and running I want to make sure mine starts after these. This service may also be deployed in non-corporate environments so I’m looking for a suitable service that is unlikely to have been disabled by the end user.
Does anyone know of a generic driver for touchpads that supports scrolling. I specifically need this for a Windows 7 machine but could use it on others as well.
Hi.
I have one dedicated server with Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise.
I need Web, SQL and Services servers. Is it good idea to use physical server only as Hyper-V manager and for each specific server use one Virtual VHD?
Thank you.
I just followed How to use Group Policy to remotely install software in Windows Server 2003 to try publishing a software (MSI file). I could follow all the steps, but the supposedly successfully published software does not appear on client/user machine's Add/Remove Programs.
Could some help figure why this may not be working.
