Hello,
I am using Ubuntu 9.10 on my Thinkpad T61. Very often after the system woke up from sleep, all the gnome shortcuts went dead (no effect when key combinations pressed).
Things like "Alt+F4, Alt+TAB" are dead; things like Ctrl+C/Ctrl+V are OK; buttons such as volume up/down also OK;
I tried to Google for answers but wasn't lucky enough. Any idea how to solve it?
Thanks!
If it's not preventable, can I at least restore them without restarting the session?
Our physical server godzilla forwards mails to our virtuall VMware server b4. They are on the same net.
Often connection drops, we can't ping godzilla with our b4. That means mails from godzilla won't reach b4 and the mails will be in handed into the mailq.
Sometimes it takes some hours and the issue will auto fix itself, b4 will wake up and the mail will be delivered.
Another thing if we remotely ssh into the b4, the b4 will wake up and and receive any mailq mails from godzilla and deliver them.

I've been playing with a new SLR that also happens to record movies.
When I try to view a movie using Movie Player, it plays fine, and the sound is there, but the colors are off - green grass is purple, and my golden retriever is a blue retriever. VLC reports that the file is broken, offers to repair it, and plays it with the same problem.
The same file plays fine under WinXP with both Media Player and Quicktime, and with no problems under MacOS also with Quicktime.
What's the problem, and how can I fix it?

So I just recently installed Ubuntu Linux 10.04 on my desktop machine alongside Windows 7, it booted just fine the first few times but after I went into my Windows 7 recovery software provided by Packard Bell (I did this on accident BTW I exited it straight away and made no changes as far as I know) and re-booted I get this screen:
error: no such partition
grub rescue>_
PS: I have installed it on a USB stick using the ISO on the official Ubuntu website.
I was using the default network manager to connect to my wi-fi network, but if the connection is dropped or router restarted the network manager wont reconnect automatically after i guess a couple of tries and just gives a pop-up to connect manually .
To avoid this annoyance I installed WICD but though it does try to reconnect to the network after a drop in connection it is unable to resolve the ip address and i am left with an even bigger annoyance .
1. Is there a way to counter either of these issues ?
2. Something like a background process that will check network status periodically and then try to connect to a favored network ?
Edit-
out put of lshw -C network

I tried to follow this tutorial frome ghacks.net. But I end up with a bug. Everytime I try to change the desktop background or the theme. It opens up lots of folders. And then close it back again. So I cannot do anything when I try to change the background or the theme to the default.
Here is the tutorial
And I can't even shutdown my machine now, please help.
My dual-boot computer is fubar but I can log into Linux and see the Windows filesystem.
One of the biggest losses is all of the passwords I had stored for sites in Firefox.
Is there any way to retrieve these by digging around in the Windows filesystem?
I'm running IE10 on Windows 8 RTM and just saw, that IE suggest some sites when entering something in the address bar. That wouldn't suprise me at all, if I had ever visited these sites, but I haven't. To ensure that no ads have injected these sites into my browsing history, I've deleted my history and cookies without preserving my favourite website data. I also double checked that suggested sites feature is turned off.
But even after cleaning my history these sites show up.
Now I'm little concerned what is causing this. Did Mircosoft add these sites by default to make some money (all these sites are commercial) or do I already got some nasty adware?
Edit: Search suggestion are disabled too.
In a previous version of Nautilus the location had a button for toggling between a text field for the directory path, and a row of buttons (one per directory in the path). With the install of Ubunbtu 10.04 Nautilus 2.30.1 has just the button bar and no button to toggle to the text field. How do I get the control that was available before?
I've been trying to find a way to run a torrent client strictly through a VPN. I am running Ubuntu 9.10, and use Ktorrent. I can connect to vpn.itshidden.com but I am worried about the connection dropping if I'm away from my computer. Any help would be appreciated.
Hi, I have a Sony Vaio FW350 with a HDMI output. I'm trying to use it under Ubuntu 9.10 with a LG LCD monitor 21,5'. I've tried two approaches:
Boot the laptop with the HDMI cable connected and monitor turned on. Result: LCD Monitor keeps turned on but the whole screen is black and Ubuntu do not seem to be initializing.
Boot Ubuntu until the end. I then connect the HDMI cable into the Laptop. The mouse and the whole system freezes.
In both cases the only way to turn off the laptop is holding the power button.
I've looked around the internet for similar problems, but only found workarounds for the same problem with VGA input, not HDMI.
I also tried to use metacity before connecting the cable, but still got the same result.
Any hints?
I have to SSH to a computer on my network and stay connected. However, my network shuts down from midnight to 7:00 am everyday. What i want is that I be able to auto-reconnect to the computer once the network comes back at 7:00 am. Cron solutions are no good. I am using Ubuntu 10.04.
I am trying to start xampp when the ubuntu starts on ubuntu 9.10. I tried going to system-preferences-startup applications adding it there, but it didn't work. I surmised it was because it needs to be started as root. I know you can make a startup script some how, but I'm not sure how to do it. How can I make it start xampp when the computer boots, even without logging in?
FYI, the command for starting it is sudo /opt/lampp/lampp start
I am running two Dell R410 servers in the same rack of a data center. Both have the same hardware configuration, run Ubuntu 10.4, have the same packages installed and run the same Java web servers. No other load.
One of them is 20-30% faster than the other, very consistently. I used dstat to figure out, if there are more context switches, IO, swapping or anything, but I see no reason for the difference. With the same workload, (no swapping, virtually no IO), the cpu usage and load is higher on one server.
So the difference appears to be mainly CPU bound, but while a simple cpu benchmark using sysbench (with all other load turned off) did yield a difference, it was only 6%. So maybe it is not only CPU but also memory performance.
I tried to figure out if the BIOS settings differ in some parameter, did a dump using dmidecode, but that yielded no difference.
I compared /proc/cpuinfo, no difference. I compared the output of cpufreq-info, no difference.
I am lost. What can I do, to figure out, what is going on?
I can't open any PDFs in IE10 on Win7 64bit.
I've tested with PDFs from Intranet / Internet / local file system, http and https. I've tested installing/uninstalling Acrobat Reader 11.0.03 and the Nitro PDF Reader. I've also tried enabling/disabling the Tools Internet Options Advanced Security Do not save encrypted pages to disk option.
In Google Chrome PDFs are opened in the Acrobat Reader Plugin, but in IE10 the only thing I always get is a small cross in the top left corner of the browser.
Can anybody help me?
I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 Server in VMWare Fusion (on a Mac) and I'm having trouble changing the console resolution. It seems to be stuck on 640x480.
Ubuntu 9.10 uses Grub2, so there is no /etc/grub/menu.lst.
I tried adding vga=791 to the kernel parameters (both during boot and by adding it to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT in /etc/default/grub and then running update-grub2) and neither had any effect.
When using vga=791, grub says that vga=791 is depreciated and that I should use gfxpayload=1024x768x16,1024x768 instead. However, that also does absolutely nothing.
I have a feeling this problem is specific to running Ubuntu 9.10 in VMWare, but Google hasn't turned up anything.
I'm having trouble with Java on a virtual server, it always gives me the following error:
# java
Error occurred during initialization of VM
Could not reserve enough space for object heap
Could not create the Java virtual machine.
I first solved this by using the CACAO virtual machine (of OpenJDK, by putting it first in jvm.cfg), but then I run into problems with my web application (Play! framework based, gives me nasty LinkageErrors). So I cannot use that VM. Instead I'd like to just use the normal server VM and set -Xmx128M by default. How can I do that?

I have a Lenovo G550 and I installed Ubuntu on it through Windows and I have no drivers. No sound, no wireless. I previously had installed it through Windows Vista with no problems at all. I now run Windows 7 and cannot seem to get it to function properly. I tried installing the recommended drivers to make sure the proper ones were installed and that still did nothing.
Any one have ANY idea what could be happening? I just don't feel like dealing with it.
I've been experimenting with Ubuntu 10.04(64bit) inside a VirtualBox VM. This isn't my first experience with Linux, but I'm still very much a Linux noob.
Whenever I try to install software from the Ubuntu Software Center, the installation gets interrupted and I get a warning that this installation requires untrusted sources. I can install anything I want using apt-get, it's just the gui that doesn't work. I've done research on the issue and taken the following precautions with no result:
under software sources
Allowed Canonical partners
Allowed source code
Changed the download source to main server
I get no errors when running an apt-get update. Can anyone shed some light on the issue?
