  • Share an Interface between XAML and WinForms

    We're considering converting our WinForms application to a XAML application sometime in the future. Currently, our WinForms application uses lots of tabs, which we put use to display different User Control objects. All of these controls implement a specific Interface so we can make specific calls to them and not worry about what the actual control is (things like Save, Close, Clear, etc.) Would it be possible to create a WPF project that contains XAML User Controls that implement the same Interface and display those User Controls in the WinFroms project within a tab?

    When asp.net introduced the concept of viewstate, it changed the way how developers maintain the state for the controls in a web page. Until then to keep the track of the control(in classic asp), it was the developer responsibility to manually assign the posted content before rendering the control again. Viewstate made allowed the developer to do it with ease. The developers are not bothered about how controls keep there state on post back. Viewstate is rendered to the browser as a hidden variable __viewstate. Since viewstate stores the values of all controls, as the number of controls in the page increases, the content of viewstate grows large. It causes some websites to load slowly. As developers we need viewstate, but actually we do not want this for all the controls in the page. Till asp.net 3.5, if viewstate is disabled from web.config (using <pages viewstate=”false”/> ..</pages>), then you can not enable it from the control level/page level. Both <%@ Page EnableViewState=”true”…. and <asp:textbox EnableViewState=”true” will not work in this case. Lot of developers demands for more control over viewstate. It will be useful if the developers are able to disable it for the entire page and enable it for only those controls that needed viewstate. With ASP.NET 4.0, this is possible, a happy news for the developers. This is achieved by introducing a new property called ViewStateMode. Let us see, What is ViewStateMode – Is a new property in asp.net 4.0, that allows developers to enable viewstate for individual control even if the parent has disabled it. This ViewStateMode property can contain either of three values Enabled- Enable view state for the control even if the parent control has view state disabled. Disabled - Disable view state for this control even if the parent control has view state enabled Inherit - Inherit the value of ViewStateMode from the parent, this is the default value. To disable view state for a page and to enable it for a specific control on the page, you can set the EnableViewState property of the page to true, then set the ViewStateMode property of the page to Disabled, and then set the ViewStateMode property of the control to Enabled.     Hi, i have a GridView (selectable) in which I want to generate a dynamic GridView in a new row BELOW the selected row. I can add the row and gridview dynamically in the Gridview1 PreRender event. I need to use this event because: _OnDataBound is not called on every postback (same for _OnRowDataBound) _OnInit is not possible because the 'Inner table' for the Gridview is added after Init _OnLoad is not possible because the 'selected' row is not selected yet. I can add the columns to the dynamic GridView based on my ITemplate class. But now the button events won't fire.... Any suggestions?   • Accessing and Updating Data in ASP.NET: Filtering Data Using a CheckBoxList

    Filtering Database Data with Parameters, an earlier installment in this article series, showed how to filter the data returned by ASP.NET's data source controls. In a nutshell, the data source controls can include parameterized queries whose parameter values are defined via parameter controls. For example, the SqlDataSource can include a parameterized SelectCommand, such as: SELECT * FROM Books WHERE Price > @Price. Here, @Price is a parameter; the value for a parameter can be defined declaratively using a parameter control. ASP.NET offers a variety of parameter controls, including ones that use hard-coded values, ones that retrieve values from the querystring, and ones that retrieve values from session, and others. Perhaps the most useful parameter control is the ControlParameter, which retrieves its value from a Web control on the page. Using the ControlParameter we can filter the data returned by the data source control based on the end user's input. While the ControlParameter works well with most types of Web controls, it does not work as expected with the CheckBoxList control. The ControlParameter is designed to retrieve a single property value from the specified Web control, but the CheckBoxList control does not have a property that returns all of the values of its selected items in a form that the CheckBoxList control can use. Moreover, if you are using the selected CheckBoxList items to query a database you'll quickly find that SQL does not offer out of the box functionality for filtering results based on a user-supplied list of filter criteria. The good news is that with a little bit of effort it is possible to filter data based on the end user's selections in a CheckBoxList control. Previously, we had written our models in such a way to create the models using our ORM, but we recently ditched this because: We couldn't track changes using the ORM The state of the ORM wasn't in sync with the database (e.g. lots of differences primarily related to indexes and unique constraints) There was no way to audit database changes unless the developer documented the database change via email to the team. Our solution to this problem was to basically have a "gatekeeper" individual who checks every change into the database and applies all accepted database changes to an accepted_db_changes.sql file, whereby the developers who need to make any database changes put their requests into a proposed_db_changes.sql file. We check this file in, and, when it's updated, we all apply the change to our personal database on our development machine. We don't create indexes or constraints on the models, they are applied explicitly on the database. I would like to know what are some strategies to maintain database schemas and if ours is seems reasonable. Thanks!

  • Is there a list of common object that implement IDisposable for the using statement?

    I was wondering if there was some sort of cheat sheet for which objects go well with the using statement... SQLConnection, MemoryStream, etc. Taking it one step further, it would be great to even show the other "pieces of the puzzle", like how you should actually call connection.Close() before the closing using statement bracket. Anything like that exist? If not, maybe we should make one.

  • Best approach for a flexible layout for ASP.NET application

    I am looking for a best approach for designing a dynamic page. I want my users to be able to determine the position of set of controls to be loaded into a page. Should be able to add new controls or swap in and out new controls into an existing page. Eg: Portal based applications,iGoogle kind of websites I am afraid that I will be re-inventing the wheel if I go and create a portal structure for my web application. There are a couple of things in my mind to look into: Good third-party suites which can do the same Should I look into Silverlight RIA application? I have researched about the Infragistics and Telerik controls and the price is high for just a control like LayoutManager which I need. Any alternatives? What is the best approach for this kind of situation, to add to the list?

  • Is there a 3 way merger tool that “understands” common refactoring?

    When a simple refactoring like “rename field” has been done on one branch it can be very hard to merge the changes into the other branches. (Extract method is much harder as the merge tools don’t seem to match the unchanged blocks well) Now in my dreams, I am thinking of a tool that can record (or work out) what well defined refactoring operations have been done on one branch and then “replay” them on the other branch, rather than trying to merge every line the refactoring has affected. see also "Is there an intelligent 3rd merge tool that understands VB.NET" for the other half of my pain! Also has anyone try something like MolhadoRef (blog article about MolhadoRef and Refactoring-aware SCM), This is, in theory, refactoring-aware source control.

Users have things like logins, passwords, e-mail addresses, avatars, etc. But there are two types of Users that will be using this site, let's say Parents and Businesses. I need to store some different information for the Parents (e.g. childrens' names, domestic partner, salaries, etc.) than for the Businesses (e.g. industry, number of employees, etc.), but also some of it is the same, like logins and passwords.   • Is there a Boost (or other common lib) type for matrices with string keys?

    I have a dense matrix where the indices correspond to genes. While gene identifiers are often integers, they are not contiguous integers. They could be strings instead, too. I suppose I could use a boost sparse matrix of some sort with integer keys, and it wouldn't matter if they're contiguous. Or would this still occupy a great deal of space, particularly if some genes have identifiers that are nine digits? Further, I am concerned that sparse storage is not appropriate, since this is an all-by-all matrix (there will be a distance in each and every cell, provided the gene exists). I'm unlikely to need to perform any matrix operations (e.g., matrix multiplication). I will need to pull vectors out of the matrix (slices). It seems like the best type of matrix would be keyed by a Boost unordered_map (a hash map), or perhaps even simply an STL map. Am I looking at this the wrong way? Do I really need to roll my own? I thought I saw such a class somewhere before. Thanks!

Both arrays come from individual database resources, the first stores entry titles, the second stores entry authors, the key=value pairs are as follows: array ( 'entry_id' => 1, 'title' => 'Test Entry' ) array ( 'entry_id' => 1, 'author_id' => 2 I'm trying to achieve an array structure like: array ( 'entry_id' => 1, 'author_id' => 2, 'title' => 'Test Entry' ) Currently, I've solved the problem by looping through each array and formatting the array the way I want, but I think this is a bit of a memory hog. $entriesArray = array(); foreach ($entryNames as $names) { foreach ($entryAuthors as $authors) { if ($names['entry_id'] === $authors['entry_id']) { $entriesArray[] = array( 'id' => $names['entry_id'], 'title' => $names['title'], 'author_id' => $authors['author_id'] ); } } } I'd like to know is there an easier, less memory intensive method of doing this?

The button has a Command and a CommandParameter. The command binds to the ButtonCommand that we have in our ViewModel RelayCommand _buttonCommand;         /// <summary>         /// Gets the button command.         /// </summary>         /// <value>The button command.</value>         public RelayCommand ButtonCommand         {             get             {                 if (_buttonCommand == null)                 {                     _buttonCommand = new RelayCommand(                         x => x != null && x.ToString().Length > 0 && CheckCommandAvailable(x.ToString()),                         x => ExecuteCommand(x.ToString()));                 }                 return _buttonCommand;             }         }   In our relay command we then do some checks with a lambda expression. We check if the command  parameter is null, is the length greater than 0 and we have a CheckCommandAvailable method that will tell  us if the button is even enabled. After we check on these three items we then pass the command parameter to an action method. This is all pretty straight forward, the issue that we solved a few days ago centered around having a control that needed to use a Relay Command and this control was a nested control and was using a different DataContext. The example below illustrates how we handled this scenario. We set the name of this control to “StatusView”. In our button control we set our command parameters and commands different than the example above. <HyperlinkButton Content="{Binding BigBoardButtonText, Mode=TwoWay}" CommandParameter="{Binding 'Position.PositionName'}" Command="{Binding ElementName=StatusView, Path=DataContext.BigBoardCommand, Mode=TwoWay}" /> This hyperlink button lives in a ListBox control and this listbox has an ItemSource of PositionSelectors. The Command Parameter is binding to the Position.Position property of that PositionSelectors object. This again is pretty straight forward again. What gets a bit tricky is the Command property in the hyperlink. It is binding to the element name we created in the user control (StatusView) Because this hyperlink is in a listbox and is in the item template it doesn’t have a direct handle on the DataContext that the RadTileViewItem has so we have to make sure it does. We do that by binding to the element name of status view then set the path to DataContext.BigBoardCommand. BigBoardCommand is the name of the RelayCommand in the view model. private RelayCommand _bigBoardCommand = null;         /// <summary>         /// Gets the big board command.         /// </summary>         /// <value>The big board command.</value>         public RelayCommand BigBoardCommand         {             get             {                 if (_bigBoardCommand == null)                 {                     _bigBoardCommand = new RelayCommand(x => true, x => AddToBigBoard(x.ToString()));                 }                 return _bigBoardCommand;             }         } From there we check for true again and then call the action and pass in the parameter that we had as the command parameter. What we are working on now is a bit trickier than this second example. In the above example we are only creating this TileViewItem with this name “StatusView” once. In another part of our application we are generating multiple TileViewItems, so we cannot set the name in the control as we cant have multiple controls with the same name. When we run the application we get an error that reads that the value is out of expected range. My searching has led me to think we cannot have multiple controls with the same name. This is today’s problem and Ill post the solution to this once it is found.

  • Is it bad programming style to have a single, maybe common, generic exception?

    Hi, so in my program I have parts where I use try catch blocks like this try { DirectoryInfo dirInfo = new DirectoryInfo(someString); //I don't know if that directory exists //I don't know if that string is valid path string... it could be anything //Some operations here } catch(Exception iDontCareWhyItFailed) { //Didn't work? great... we will say: somethings wrong, try again/next one } Of course I probably could do checks to see if the string is valid path (regex), then I would check if directory exists, then I could catch various exceptions to see why my routine failed and give more info... But in my program it's not really necessary. Now I just really need to know if this is acceptable, and what would a pro say/think about that. Thanks a lot for attention.

  • Algorithms to find longest common prefix in a sliding window.

    Hi, I have written a Lempel Ziv compressor and decompressor. I am seeking to improve the time to search the dictionary for a phrase. I have considered K-M-P and Boyer-Moore, but I think an algorithm that adapts to changes in the dictionary would be faster. I've been reading that binary search trees (AVL or with splays) improve the performance of compression time considerably. What I fail to understand is how to bootstrap the binary search tree and insert/remove data. I'm not actually quite sure the significance of each node in the binary search. I am searching for phrases so will each character be considered a node? Also how and what is inserted/removed from the search tree as new data enters the dictionary and old data is removed? The binary search tree sounds like a good payoff since it can adapt to the dictionary, but I'm just not quite sure of how it's used.
