• Speed/expensive of SQLite query vs. List.contains() for "in-set" icon on list rows

  An application I'm developing requires that the app main a local list of things, let's say books, in a local "library." Users can access their local library of books and search for books using a remote web service. The app will be aware of other users of the app through this web service, and users can browse other users' lists of books in their library. Each book is identified by a unique bookId (represented as an int). When viewing books returned through a search result or when viewing another user's book library, the individual list row cells need to visually represent if the book is in the user's local library or not. A user can have at most 5,000 books in the library, stored in SQLite on the device (and synchronized with the remote web service). My question is, to determine if the book shown in the list row is in the user's library, would it be better to directly ask SQLite (via SELECT COUNT(*)...) or to maintain, in-memory, a List or int[] array of some sort containing the unique bookIds. So, on each row display do I query SQLite or check if the List or int[] array contains the unique bookId? Because the user can have at most 5,000 books, each bookId occupies 4 bytes so at most this would use ~ 20kB. In thinking about this, and in typing this out, it seems obvious to me that it would be far better for performance if I maintained a list or int[] array of in-library bookIds vs. querying SQLite (the only caveat to maintaining an int[] array is that if books are added or removed I'll need to grow or shrink the array by hand, so with this option I'll most likely use an ArrayList or Vector, though I'm not sure of the additional memory overhead of using Integer objects as opposed to primitives). Opinions, thoughts, suggestions?

• Using list() to extract a data.table inside of a function

  I must admit that the data.table J syntax confuses me. I am attempting to use list() to extract a subset of a data.table as a data.table object as described in Section 1.4 of the data.table FAQ, but I can't get this behavior to work inside of a function. • How to stop rendering invisible faces

  I am making a voxel-based game, and for needs of it, i am creating a block rendering engine. Point is, that i need to generate lots of cubes. Every time i render more than 16x16x16 chunk of theese blocks, my FPS is dropped down hardly, because it renders all 6 faces of all of theese cubes. THat's 24 576 quads, and i dont want that. So, my question is, How to stop rendering vertices(or quads) that are not visible, and therefore increase performance of my game? • find the difference between two very large list

  I have two large list(could be a hundred million items), the source of each list can be either from a database table or a flat file. both lists are of comparable sizes, both unsorted. I need to find the difference between them. so I have 3 scenarios: 1. List1 is a database table(assume each row simply have one item(key) that is a string), List2 is a large file. 2. Both lists are from 2 db tables. 3. both lists are from two files. in case 2, I plan to use: select a.item from MyTable a where a.item not in (select b.item form MyTable b) this clearly is inefficient, is there a better way? Another approach is: I plan to sort each list, and then walk down both of them to find the diff. If the list is from a file, I have to read it into a db table first, then use db sorting to output the list. Is the run time complexity still O(nlogn) in db sorting? either approach is a pain and seems would be very slow when the list involved has hundreds of millions of items. any suggestions?

• Mirroring the Global Address List on Blackberries

  In times immemorial, back in the day when men were men and blackberries still took AA batteries, we rolled them out to our users for our 100 person operation. At that time, there was no such thing as address list lookups, so we were forced to hack a bit. The ingenious hack we came up with was to mirror the GAL as a public folder and then synch up blackberries to that. While there have been a few downsides here and there, they have been mere annoyances. And our users, having grown fat and prosperous in the intervening years, have been used to seeing every single employee and department here listed on their hand-held automatically. Alas, it appears that Outlook 2010 breaks this functionality as Blackberry desktop manager is completely incompatible with it. Moreover, this presents us with an opportunity to change things for the better given that public folders are going away next time we upgrade exchange. So, we are in search of a tool or technique that will allow us to mimic current functionality--that is to: Push an essentially arbitrary list of ~100 contacts to blackberry address books Said list shall be centrally updated Without requiring desktop manager or exchange public folders. • How to get a list of Dovecot IMAP users

  How do you get a list of users for a dovecot email server that connect via IMAP (as opposed to POP)? Our server is setup to authenticate via LDAP/PAM. Is there an easy way to get a list of the users who are accessing their mail via IMAP, rather than POP? I am about to migrate our server to Google Apps and want to migrate all of the mail for my IMAP users only (couple hundred out of several hundred total users). POP mail will be migrated separately from the client end obviously. I would much rather migrate only the IMAP users rather than the whole domain which would include migrating a bunch of POP mail left in the server that has already been read/sorted/deleted in the client's email program. Migrating all of that extra useless leftover POP mail could waste weeks of migration time. I suppose parsing some logs to see who has connected on an IMAP port (995 or 993) would give me a list would work if someone could help me do that. I know I have the raw dovecot logs, but am hoping for a cleaner solution.

• List of objects sent over WCF, but null list received?

  Hey there, I have an object containing a list of custom objects which I am returning over a response in WCF, however on the receiving end, the list is null? But it contains 112 objects just prior to stepping out of the service on the server. This wasn't always the case, I have seen it return a list. I've just recently upgraded it to use NET TCP bindings, but I can't confirm when I started losing the data or if it was since the conversion from wsHttpBinding to netTcpBinding as it moved along with about four other services. I have looked on the WCF Service messages and trace file and also the WCF client's messages and trace file, no exceptions reported, and both message logs indicate they are sending the List<T> and for client, receiving the list - very frustrating! It's not a super light array, but not huge either, around 100KB. it has about 12 properties each and as stated 112 items are being sent. I have tried everything I can think of on client and server, note: Client: this.binding = new NetTcpBinding(SecurityMode.None) { MaxReceivedMessageSize = int.MaxValue, ReaderQuotas = { MaxStringContentLength = int.MaxValue, MaxArrayLength = int.MaxValue } }; ... Server app.config (sorry I have no idea if the quota settings have any bearing on net tcp?   Hello, i am devloping a site using .net MVC i have a data access layer which basically consists of static list objects that are created from data within my database. The method that rebuilds this data first clears all the list objects. Once they are empty it then add the data. Here is an example of one of the lists im using. its a method which generates all the UK postcodes. there are about 50 methods similar to this in my application that return all sorts of information, such as towns, regions, members, emails etc. public static List<PostCode> AllPostCodes = new List<PostCode>(); when the rebuild method is called it first clears the list. The exception is "Index was outside the bounds of the array." it is due to when a list is being cleared. • How can I reject a Windows "Service Stop" request in ATL 7?

  I have a Windows service built upon ATL 7's CAtlServiceModuleT class. This service serves up COM objects that are used by various applications on the system, and these other applications naturally start getting errors if the service is stopped while they are still running. I know that ATL DLLs solve this problem by returning S_OK in DllCanUnloadNow() if CComModule's GetLockCount() returns 0. That is, it checks to make sure no one is currently using any COM objects served up by the DLL. I want equivalent functionality in the service. Here is what I've done in my override of CAtlServiceModuleT::OnStop(): void CMyServiceModule::OnStop() { if( GetLockCount() != 0 ) { return; } BaseClass::OnStop(); } Now, when the user attempts to Stop the service from the Services panel, they are presented with an error message: Windows could not stop the XYZ service on Local Computer. The service did not return an error. This could be an internal Windows error or an internal service error. If the problem persists, contact your system administrator. The Stop request is indeed refused, but it appears to put the service in a bad state. A second Stop request results in this error message: Windows could not stop the XYZ service on Local Computer. Error 1061: The service cannot accept control messages at this time. Interestingly, the service does actually stop this time (although I'd rather it not, since there are still outstanding COM references). I have two questions: Is it considered bad practice for a service to refuse to stop when asked? Is there a polite way to signify that the Stop request is being refused; one that doesn't put the Service into a bad state?

  I have an array of input strings that contains either email addresses or account names in the form of domain\account. I would like to build a List of string that contains only email addresses. If an element in the input array is of the form domain\account, I will perform a lookup in the dictionary. If the key is found in the dictionary, that value is the email address. If not found, that won't get added to the result list. • How to retrive message list from p2p

  Hello friends I have a messaging system that uses p2p. Each peer has a incoming message list and a outgoing message list. What I need to do is whenever a new peer will join the mesh he will get the all the incoming messages from other peers and add those into it's own incoming message list. Now I know when I get the other peer info from I can ask them to give their own list to me. But I'm not finding the way how..? Any suggestion on this or help would be highly appreciated. • Sharepoint "List does not exist" after site import

  I'm try to copy a site from a production WSS 3.0 server to a testing server in a different farm to try some changes. The export using stsadm works as expected, I create the target site in the test farm and the import finished without error. The site in question makes use of some of the 'Sharepoint Boost' products and those are installed and activated on the destination server. When I try to access the site, I receive the error- "List does not exist The page you selected contains a list that does not exist. It may have been deleted by another user." Any specific guidance might be helpful, but this is the most useless message I've seen. What's the process for troubleshooting this - Is there a more verbose log that contains more information somewhere?

• Getting a list of patches in an HPSA patch policy

  I'm trying to get a list of patches contained in a Patch Policy in HPSA -- I can get what I need via the Twister web interface (under PatchPolicy.getPatches(), give it an ID, and it happily returns a list of patches contained.) -- I'm having a hard time getting this to work via the Pytwist interface, though... I haven't used the Pytwist interface for much besides some very basic Device manipulation, and Python is.. not my forte. I create the TwistServer object, then a PatchPolicy object from that (which I think is working..), but can't figure out how/where to call the getPatches() method from in Python-land. If there's a way to dig this out of the database itself, that would work, too, but I can't seem to find much in there along these lines besides the vendor-recommended patching stuff, and we use custom policies.

• Testdisk won’t list files for an ext4 partition inside a LVM inside a LUKS partition

  I have accidentally deleted a file that I want to recover. The partition is an ext4 partition inside an LVM partition that is encrypted with dm-crypt/LUKS. The encrypted LUKS partition is: /dev/sda2 which contains a physical volume, with a single volume group, mapped to: /dev/mapper/system And the logical volume, the ext4 partition is mapped to: /dev/mapper/system-home A # testdisk /dev/mapper/system-home will notice it as an ext4 partition but tells me that the partition seems damaged when I try to list the files. If I # testdisk /dev/mapper/system it will detect all the partitions, but the same happens if I try to list their files. Am I doing something wrong or is it a known bug? I have searched but haven’t found any clue.

But to do that I have to know the name of my drive, something like c7d0s0. Using the command zpool status can I see the harddrives already in use in my zpool but not the hard-drives that are not in use. How can I list the names of the hard-drives that are not in use in any zpool or list the name of all my hard-drives?

• Word2007 - Preventing mid-item line breaks in a list in a table

  It's not programming, but it's the paperwork you have to fill out ot get things to program. When you have a list with an item that's two lines long, and text above pushes it down such that a page break should fall between the two lines, Word pushes the item down so that both lines are on the following page - this is called Widow/Orphan Control and is an option on the Paragraph menu. When the list is inside of a table cell, however, this feature doesn't seem to work - which is what I'm looking to work around. Word doesn't push the item down automatically, so it breaks across two pages, as seen here: Solutions that have been tried: Playing with the options on the Paragraph tab: doesn't seem to do anything Changing the margins or text: this is a template and will need to always work Any ideas?

  I'm trying to make curl use GOST2001-GOST89-GOST89 cipher which is available and usable by OpenSSL but keep getting failed setting cipher list error despite the fact that curl sees gost engine and can use GOST client certificates.
