• Why am I getting this "Connection to PulseAudio failed" error?

  I have a computer that runs Mythbuntu 11.10. It has an external USB Kenwood Digital Audio device. When I open up pavucontrol, I get this message: If I do as the message suggests and run start-pulseaudio-x11, I get this output: $ start-pulseaudio-x11 Connection failure: Connection refused pa_context_connect() failed: Connection refused How do I correct this error? Update: Somewhere during the course of doing the suggested tests in the comments, a new audio device has now become visible in my sound settings. I have not attached or made any new device, so this must be the result of of some setting change. The device I use and know about is the Kenwood Audio device.   While it’s still a full month away, I’m getting super excited about my upcoming trips. May and June are chock full of events, two of which I’ll have full announcements for within the week.  In mid May I’ll be driving to Dallas to take my 2nd trip to Korea (the bulgogi part).  Seeing a bunch of old friends from my first trip as well as taking a week for some deeper personal things. While in my absence, June 1st-4th, I’ve setup a tour across Arkansas and Texas for two Microsoft employees who work on the Visual Studio & Visual Basic team to talk at various user groups and companies.  Look for my announcement within the next couple of days. • Copy Excel Formatting the Easy Way with Format Painter

  The Format Painter in Excel makes it easy to copy the formatting of a cell and apply it to another. With just a few clicks you can reproduce formatting such as fonts, alignment, text size, border, and background color. On any Excel worksheet, click on the cell with the formatting you’d like to copy.  You will see dashed lines around the selected cell. Then select the Home tab and click on the Format Painter.   You’ll see your cursor now includes a paintbrush graphic. Move to the cell where you’d like to apply the formatting and click on it. Your target cell will now have the new formatting.   If you double-clicking on Format Painter you can then click on multiple individual files to which to apply the format. Or, you can click and drag across a group of cells. When you are finished applying formats, click on Format Painter again, or on the Esc key, to turn it off. The Format Painter is a very simple, but extremely useful and time saving tool when creating complex worksheets. • DATE function does not support all the dates in DAX by design #powerpivot #tabular #dax

  The DATE function in DAX has this simple syntax: DATE( <year>, <month>, <day> ) If you are like me, you never read the BOL notes that says in a clear way that it supports dates beginning with March 1, 1900. In fact, I was wrongly assuming that it would have supported any date that can be represented in a Date data type in Data Models, so all the dates beginning with January 1, 1900. The funny thing is that in some of the BOL documentation you will find that Date data type supports dates after March 1, 1900 (which seems not including that date, but this is a detail…). But we should not digress. The real issue is that if you try to call the DATE function passing values between January 1 and February 28, 1900, you will see a different day as a result. evaluate row ( "x", DATE( 1900, 1, 1 ) ) -- return WRONG result -- [x] 12/31/1899 12:00:00 AM   evaluate row ( "x", DATE( 1901, 2, 29 ) ) -- return WRONG result -- [x] 2/28/1900 12:00:00 AM   evaluate row ( "x", DATE( 1900, 3, 1 ) ) -- return CORRECT result -- [x] 3/1/1900 12:00:00 AM As usual, this is not a bug. It is “by design”. The DATE function works in this way in Excel. And also in Excel it was “by design”. In this case the design is having the same bug of Lotus 1-2-3 that handled 1900 a leap year, even though it isn’t. The first release of Lotus 1-2-3 is dated 1983. I hope many of my readers are younger than that. I tried to open a bug in Connect. Please vote it. I would like if Microsoft changed this type of items from “by design” (as we can expect) to “by genetic disease”. Or by “historical respect”, in order to be more politically correct.

• BizTalk 2009 - The Community ODBC Adapter: Installation

  I have previsouly detailed the installation of MySQL, the configuration of MySQL and the installation of the ODBC Data Connector for MySQL.  The reason I needed to install and configure these servers was to provide a test environment for a BizTalk Server 2009 solution I am working on where BizTalk will be querying and populating a MySQL database. To do this I then needed to install and add the Community ODBC adapter from Two Connect: "The Community BizTalk Adapter for ODBC is based on the code that was first made available on GotDotNet a few years ago. TwoConnect has refreshed this code, added an installer, and tested it against the latest BizTalk editions. We are releasing the updates back to the BizTalk developer, user and partner community as part of our ongoing community intitiatives. This is the second adapter package that TwoConnect makes available to the community after the very succesful release of the BizTalk WSE 3 adapter a couple of years ago. This adapter is useful in all ODBC based integration scenarios. The following are the new features added and fixes made to the old code base on GotDotNet." Detailed below are the installation instructions for this adapter.  Downloading and running the installer will load up the splash screen. Next you need to select the installation location for the adapter. You then need to confirm the installation following which you will be shown the installation progress. Assuming all has gone well you should see the installation complete screen. Once the installation has completed successfully you will then need to add the adapter to your BizTalk Server.  To do this open the BizTalk Administration console, expand the Platform Settings and right click on Adapters then select New\Adapter. You should then be able to select the ODBC adapter and choose the display name for the adapter. This adapter will then be shown in the BizTalk Administration console. • May I know what python is great at [on hold]

  I am amazed by python on how tidy the code is, so i decided to learn it, and 2 days pass and I am completely in love with python, but I just code it for hobby thing like chatting robot, uploading to file hosting scripts, etc that small tools for my own daily internet life, and not much for work. I can't find a real life usage of python here. I live in Singapore, when I see in the job skill needed, from those companies hiring, only one asking for python. so I begin to be doubtful whether this skill of mine really worth my time investing it? I also heard about django, and don't know how much popular it is comparing to asp.net. So i ask your help to tell me your country and how popular python there and whether you like python or not? I really like python because of the easy scripting language (not complicated like C++) but the usefulness is almost near C++ where many open source library out there that can run both in windows and linux, so the portability is great! i just want to justify my time for learning python, as because my job does not require python, and I don't have much time at home to learn something new.

• printable PHP manual - 'all but the Function Reference section'

  My Motivation I find it easier to learn things by reading 'offline'. I'd like to lean back and read the narrative part of a paper version of the official php manual. My Scuppered Plan My plan was to download the manual, print all but the Function Reference section and then read it. I have downloaded the "Single HTML file" version of the manual from the php.net download page. (That version did not contain any images, so I patched-in the ones from the Many HTML files version with no problem.) My plan was to open that "Single HTML file" in an HTML editor, delete the Function Reference section then print it out. Unfortunately, although I have tried three different editors, I have not been able to successfully load-up that massive html file to be able to edit it. Its about (~40MB). I started to look into the phpdoc framework with a view to rendering my own html docs from the source...but that's a steep learning curve for a newby..and is a last resort. I would use a file splitter, but they tend to split files crudely with no regard for html/xml/xhtml sematics. So the question is... Does anyone know know where you can download the php manual in a version that is a kind of half-way house between the 'Single HTML file' and the 'Many HTML files'? Ideally with the docs split into 3 parts: File 1 - stuff before the function reference File 2 - function reference File 3 - stuff after the function reference Or Can you suggest any editors/tools will enable me to split up this file myself?

• LibreOffice - Can't drag and replace images [LibreOffice 3.5 and 3.6, Ubuntu 12.04]

  My wife uses LibreOffice to create catalogues of a couple hundred items and then converts it to PDF. Man we love LibreOffice! Anyway I set up Windows-7 and Mint-14-Mate dual boot for her to ease into Linux. Today she was ready for Ubuntu and so I did a clean install on her machine. Everything was smooth but today when she tried to work she ran into an issue... She used to be able to download a folder full of images to use in her catalogues and then update her catalogues by replacing old images with new ones. It was so simple - Open an old catalogue, save with a new date, drag and drop replace images of items that no longer exist. The drag and drop process would scale the image and then crop it horizontally or vertically to fit. Now that I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 for her she can no longer replace images, it just does nothing... If she drags the image to the left or right of the original it appears next to the original so I know d&d works, unfortunately it does not resize or crop the image. I tried this on my laptop and my desktop... same thing! I then tried updating the LibreOffice to 3.6, no change. I then tried opening a virtual machine windows xp and Mint 14 on this computer and tried with 3.6 in those operating systems and it worked. Can anyone help? I have a lot of hope that there is an answer because Mint is based on Ubuntu/Debian and that distro can perform this task successfully! Sorry about writing a book....

• How should I start with Lisp?

  I've been programming for years now, working my way through various iterations of Blub (BASIC, Assembler, C, C++, Visual Basic, Java, Ruby in no particular order of "Blub-ness") and I'd like to learn Lisp. However, I have a lot of intertia what with limited time (family, full time job etc) and a comfortable happiness with my current Blub (Java). So my question is this, given that I'm someone who would really like to learn Lisp, what would be the initial steps to get a good result that demonstrates the superiority of Lisp in web development? Maybe I'm missing the point, but that's how I would initially see the application of my Lisp knowledge. I'm thinking "use dialect A, use IDE B, follow instructions on page C, question your sanity after monads using counsellor D". I'd just like to know what people here consider to be an optimal set of values for A, B, C and perhaps D. Also some discussion on the relative merit of learning such a powerful language as opposed to, say, becoming a Rails expert. Just to add some more detail, I'll be developing on MacOS (or a Linux VM) - no Windows based approaches will be necessary, thanks. Notes for those just browsing by I'm going to keep this question open for a while so that I can offer feedback on the suggestions after I've been able to explore them. • Personal | First Stop on our trip, St. Louis

  St. Louis is definitely a cool city. I have always looked at it as Kansas City’s big brother. I love to Arch, wonder what is would be like to have pro hockey, really like the downtown area, and have some great friends who live there. The reason we left for St. Louis on Thursday evening was to get us a head start on our journey. Since we were doing a Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives tour, it made since to have the journey start there. We picked the Hyatt Downtown as our hotel because they had an Arch Package which was suppose to get you tickets to the arch so you didn’t need to arrive early and wait in line. That ended up not working cause the arch had been selling out every day and they were no longer accepting the hotels tickets. No biggie and the hotel did try very hard to get us tickets, but we just took our chances in the line and waited. We walked over to the park and had to wait for about 20 minutes for the doors to open and had tickets after another 20 minutes of waiting in line and at that point walked right up and were able to get to the elevators.I want to stop here to have a little aside. I don’t know who started the rumor that the arch ride is scary but it is not. You do sit in a small pod, but it like the accent on a roller coaster to the top of the first drop and an elevator with no windows outside. Nothing to be afraid of here if you aren’t claustrophobic. If you are afraid of small spaces, stay clear of this ride. Once you get to the top, you walk up 10 to 30 stairs depending on which car you were in (lower the number the less stairs you climb) and you are then at the top in a decent sized room where you look out the windows. Beautiful view of the city. I don’t typically like heights, but this felt like being inside a building and not hang out on a roof. • SharePoint 2010 BDC Model Deployment Issue: “The default web application could not be determined.”

  Yesterday I tried to deploy a Business Data Connectivity Model project created in Visual Studio 2010 to my SharePoint 2010 test server (all RTM versions), but during the deployment of the solution, SharePoint threw my following error: Add Solution:  Adding solution 'BCSDemo2.wsp'...  Deploying solution 'BCSDemo2.wsp'...Error occurred in deployment step 'Add Solution': The default web application could not be determined. Set the SiteUrl property in feature BCSDemo2_Feature1 to the URL of the desired site and retry activation.Parameter name: properties A little bit of searching on the internet taught me that I was not the only one having this issue, actually Paul Andrew describes how to solve it in this post. Although Paul describes what to do, his explanation is not, let’s say, very elaborate. :-) So let’s describe the steps a little bit more in detail: Create a new Business Data Connectivity Model project in Visual Studio 2010 and (optionally) implement all your code, change the model etc. When you try to deploy you get the error mentioned above. To fix it, in the Solution Explorer, navigate to and open the Feature1.Template.xml file (the name could be different if you decided to give your feature a different name of course). Add the following XML in the Feature element that’s already there (replace the Value with the URL of your site of course):  <Properties>    <Property Key='SiteUrl' Value='http://spf.u2ucourse.com'/>  </Properties>The resulting XML should look like:<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?><Feature xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/sharepoint/">  <Properties>    <Property Key='SiteUrl' Value='http://spf.u2ucourse.com'/>  </Properties></Feature> Deploy the solution, now without any issues. :-) What happens now, is that when Visual Studio creates the SharePoint Solution (the WSP file), it will use the Feature template XML to generate the Feature manifest, which will now include the missing property.

  The Oracle Develop conference (#oracledevelop10), being co-located for the first time ever with JavaOne in San Francisco, is guaranteed to be the ultimate rush for developers this year. Where else can you go to learn about, interact with, and meet fellow devotees of the entire Oracle Development stack (welcome, Oracle Solaris)? This will also be the first time that the community space traditionally located at Oracle OpenWorld - and hosted by Oracle Technology Network, as always - will be present at the "developer" conference during this busy week.   If you are developing MS MPI applications with Visual Studio 2010, you are probably tired of following some tedious steps for every new C++ project that you create, similar to the following:1. In Solution Explorer, right-click YourProjectName, then click Properties to open the Property Pages dialog box.2. Expand Configuration Properties and then under VC++ Directories place the cursor at the beginning of the list that appears in the Include Directories text box and then specify the location of the MS MPI C header files, followed by a semicolon, e.g.C:\Program Files\Microsoft HPC Pack 2008 SDK\Include;3. • UX Design Principles Pluralsight course review

  I've just finished the "Creating User Experiences: Fundamental Design Principles" course on Pluralsight, I am glad I took it, and here is why you should. The course is held by Billy Hollis, an internationally known author and speaker focused on user experience design. It was published in May 2012, so it is quite fresh (You’ll hear some reference to XAML, even if the content is not focused on any particular technology). I think what I liked the most about this course is the fact that Billy is not just imposing design ideas and pushing them in your throat (which would be too confronting for us developers, even if he was right), he spends a fair share amount of time explaining each topics, and illustrate them with great metaphors. If you are a minimum open minded you should get great value out of this course. Billy makes you think outside the box, he encourages you to use your right side brain, and understand design principles by simply looking at what’s around us (physical objects, nature, …). During the course he refers several time to "don't make me think" a book on UX design, which is about giving confidence to users, by making it easier for them to achieve their goals when using your app. Billy thinks that every developer can participate in elaborating good design when building software, not only designers should be involved. Get away of the easy path "let's build functional stuff for now and we will hire a designer later if we have time and budget". The course is also live and interactive as the author suggests that you do some live exercises during each module. He actually makes you realize and understand by yourself the need for change. We’re in a new era of software and devices, where grids and menus aren't enough. You can’t remain satisfied by just making things possible, you need to make them easier for your users. Understanding some fundamental design principles will help. This course can definitely be followed by any developers who wants to improve user experience of software they are working on, and I definitely recommend it.

  While most of our articles focus on security of the digital sort, this interview with a professional safecracker is an interesting look the physical side of securing your goods. As part of their Interviews with People Who Have Interesting or Unusual Jobs series over at McSweeney’s, they interviewed Ken Doyle, a professional a locksmithing and safecracking veteran with 30 years of industry experience. The interview is both entertaining and an interesting read. One of the more unusual aspects of safecracking he highlights: Q: Do you ever look inside? A: I NEVER look. It’s none of my business. Involving yourself in people’s private affairs can lead to being subpoenaed in a lawsuit or criminal trial. Besides, I’d prefer not knowing about a client’s drug stash, personal porn, or belly button lint collection. When I’m done I gather my tools and walk to the truck to write my invoice. Sometimes I’m out of the room before they open it. I don’t want to be nearby if there is a booby trap. Q: Why would there be a booby trap? A: The safe owner intentionally uses trip mechanisms, explosives or tear gas devices to “deter” unauthorized entry into his safe. It’s pretty stupid because I have yet to see any signs warning a would-be culprit about the danger.
