• How can I get the Forever to write to a different log file every day?

  I have a cluster of production servers running a Node.JS app via Forever. As far as I can tell, my options for log files are as follows: Let Forever do it on its own, in which case it will log to ~/.forever/XXXX.log Specify one specific log file for the entire life of the process What I'd like to do, however, is have it log to a different file every day. eg. 20121027.log, 20121028.log, etc. Is this possible? If so, how can it be done?

  I'm trying to create a log of a players actions as they play a game of Spelunky. The easiest I've found to do this is to log what keys are pressed at each frame. What I don't know how to do is how to integrate this with the Game Maker source code of Spelunky. Is there a specific way to create a script that is checked every frame/tick (don't know the right term) and a command to find what buttons are pressed?

• How do I log in to the ubuntu 10.04 server using grub2 from a remote computer/terminal with GUI running

  I upgraded my server from ubuntu 8.04 to 10.04. It now uses the grub2 bootloader. In 8.04 from the grub log-in page I could select the option log in to server and thereby connect through SSH directly to my server and have the GUI running. I can currently log in to my upgraded server now from any of my 8.04 machines using grub1 with the GUI running. I cannot log in that way from a machine that uses grub2 and ubuntu 10.04. I want to upgrade my entire network to ubuntu 10.04 but cannot until I know how to log in to the network from grub2 with the gui open. I have exhausted all my ideas as to the solution to this problem. Any help would be most appreciated. Thank-you

• Using IIS Logs for Performance Testing with Visual Studio

  In this blog post I’ll show you how you can play back the IIS Logs in Visual Studio to automatically generate the web performance tests. You can also download the sample solution I am demo-ing in the blog post. Introduction Performance testing is as important for new websites as it is for evolving websites. If you already have your website running in production you could mine the information available in IIS logs to analyse the dense zones (most used pages) and performance test those pages rather than wasting time testing & tuning the least used pages in your application. What are IIS Logs To help with server use and analysis, IIS is integrated with several types of log files. These log file formats provide information on a range of websites and specific statistics, including Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, user information and site visits as well as dates, times and queries. If you are using IIS 7 and above you will find the log files in the following directory C:\Interpub\Logs\ Walkthrough 1. Download and Install Log Parser from the Microsoft download Centre. You should see the LogParser.dll in the install folder, the default install location is C:\Program Files (x86)\Log Parser 2.2. LogParser.dll gives us a library to query the iis log files programmatically. By the way if you haven’t used Log Parser in the past, it is a is a powerful, versatile tool that provides universal query access to text-based data such as log files, XML files and CSV files, as well as key data sources on the Windows operating system such as the Event Log, the Registry, the file system, and Active Directory. More details… 2. Create a new test project in Visual Studio. Let’s call it IISLogsToWebPerfTestDemo.   3.  Delete the UnitTest1.cs class that gets created by default. • Rotate haproxy logs

  I tried few things but still not able to rotate haproxy logs efficiently. I need to rotate logs when log files crosses 500 MB size. Considering haproxy is serving large no. of static tcp connections, I can not restart haproxy process though a reload is doable. Daily haproxy log file size normally crosses 3 GB on my machine. • Why RSA SSH authentication only works after console log-in?

  I setup RSA authentication on one of my Ubuntu servers, however after every restart, I can't log-in via ssh RSA. In order to log-in with ssh I need to first log-in via console, then the RSA starts working. Why???   When I'm viewing the job history of a particular SQL Agent Job, I typically want to see whether it succeeded, its duration and maybe the duration of the individual steps of the job. When I open the history in the Log File Viewer, I always need to scroll over and shrink the 'Message' column and drag the 'Duration' column over next to the 'Step Name' column. Is there a way to configure the layout of the Log File Viewer (e.g. reposition columns, resize columns) and save it for future sessions? Thanks!

• How to open embedded Visio files with only Visio Viewer?

  For some bizarre reason Visio Viewer seems incapable of opening vsd files when they're embedded within a (2010) Excel document: However if I open the Excel document with 7-zip, browse to xl\embeddings, extract oleObject1.bin and rename it to a .vsd file extension it opens perfectly fine with Visio Viewer in Internet Explorer. Since this opens fine on a computer with the full Visio installed, my guess is it's trying to launch Visio rather than IE. Is there something I can do to fix this? I've been scanning with Process Monitor and searching with RegScanner comparing a Visio-installed system to a VisioViewer-installed system and there doesn't actually seem to be any sort of registry value giving direction here... maybe it's just the nature of OLE. (If it can't be fixed I'm okay with converting the extracted one to a .png or so to replace the embedded object, but the "solutions" I've found for vsd to image conversion are very poor or non-working, i.e. buggy code, code with Visio dependencies, or online services.)

  This blog post explains the basics of translating the customizations you can make to Fusion Applications products, with the inclusion of information for both composer-based customizations and the generic design-time customizations done via JDeveloper. Introduction Like most Oracle Applications, Fusion Applications installs on-premise with a US-English base language that is, in Release 7, supported by the option to add up to a total of 22 additional language packs (In Oracle Cloud production environments languages are pre-installed already). As such many organizations offer their users the option of working with their local language, and logically that should also apply for any customizations as well. Composer-based UI Customizations Customizations made in Page Composer take into consideration the session LOCALE, as set in the user preferences screen, during all customization work, and stores the customization in the MDS repository accordingly. As such the actual new or changed values used will only apply for the same language under which the customization was made, and text for any other languages requires a separate upload. See the Resource Bundles section below, which incidentally also applies to custom UI changes done in JDeveloper. You may have noticed this when you select the “Select Text Resource” menu option when editing the text on a page. Using this ensures that the resource bundles are used, whereas if you define a static value in Expression Builder it will never be available for translation. Notice in the screenshot below the “What’s New” custom value I have already defined using the ‘Select Text Resource’ feature is internally using the adfBundle groovy function to pull the custom value for my key (RT_S_1) from the ComposerOverrideBundle. Figure 1 – Page Composer showing the override bundle being used. Business Objects Customizing the Business Objects available in the Applications Composer tool for the CRM products, such as adding additional fields, also operates using the session language. Translating these additional values for these fields into other installed languages requires loading additional resource bundles, again as described below. Reports and Analytics Most customizations to Reports and BI Analytics are just essentially reorganizations and visualizations of existing number and text data from the system, and as such will use the appropriate values based on the users session language. Where a translated value or string exists for that session language, it will be used without the need for additional work. Extending through the addition of brand new reports and analytics requires another method of loading the translated strings, as part of what is known as ‘Localizing’ the BI Catalog and Metadata. This time it is via an export/import of XML data through the BI Administrators console, and is described in the OBIEE Admin Guide. Fusion Applications reports based on BI Publisher are already defined in template-per-locale, and in addition provide an extra process for getting the data for translation and reloading. This again uses the standard resource bundle format. Loading a custom report is illustrated in this video from our YouTube channel which shows the screen for both setting the template local and running an export for translation. Fusion Applications Menus Whilst the seeded Navigator and Global Menu values are fully translated when the additional language is installed, if they are customized then the change or new menu item will apply universally, not currently per language. This is set to change in a future release with the new UI Text Editor feature described below. More on Resource Bundles As mentioned above, to provide translations for most of your customizations you need to add values to a resource bundle. This is an industry open standard (OASIS) format XML file with the extension .xliff, and store translated values for the strings used by ADF at run-time. The general process is that these values are exported from the MDS repository, manually edited, and then imported back in again.This needs to be done by an administrator, via either WLST commands or through Enterprise Manager as per the screenshot below. This is detailed out in the Fusion Applications Extensibility Guide. For SaaS environments the Cloud Operations team can assist. Figure 2 – Enterprise Manager’s MDS export used getting resource bundles for manual translation and re-imported on the same screen. All customized strings are stored in an override bundle (xliff file) for each locale, suffixed with the language initials, with English ones being saved to the default. As such each language bundle can be easily identified and updated. Similarly if you used JDeveloper to create your own applications as extensions to Fusion Applications you would use the native support for resource bundles, and add them into the faces-config.xml file for inclusion in your application. An example is this ADF customization video from our YouTube channel. JDeveloper also supports automatic synchronization between your underlying resource bundles and any translatable strings you add – very handy. For more information see chapters on “Using Automatic Resource Bundle Integration in JDeveloper” and “Manually Defining Resource Bundles and Locales” in the Oracle Fusion Middleware Web User Interface Developer’s Guide for Oracle Application Development Framework. FND Messages and Look-ups FND Messages, as defined here, are not used for UI labels (they are known as ‘strings’), but are the responses back to users as a result of an action, such as from a page submit. Each ‘message’ is defined and stored in the related database table (FND_MESSAGES_B), with another (FND_MESSAGES_TL) holding any language-specific values. These come seeded with the additional language installs, however if you customize the messages via the “Manage Messages” task in Functional Setup Manager, or add new ones, then currently (in Release 7) you’ll need to repeat it for each language. Figure 3 – An FND Message defined in an English user session. Similarly Look-ups are stored in a translation table (FND_LOOKUP_VALUES_TL) where appropriate, and can be customized by setting the users session language and making the change  in the Setup and Maintenance task entitled “Manage [Standard|Common] Look-ups”. Online Help Yes, in fact all the seeded help is applied as part of each language pack install as part of the post-install provisioning process. If you are editing or adding custom online help then the Create Help screen provides a drop-down of which language your help customization will apply to. This is shown in the video below from our YouTube channel, and obviously you’ll need to it for each language in use. What is Coming for Translations? Currently planned for Release 8 is something called the User Interface (UI) Text Editor. This tool will allow the editing of all the text shown on the pages and forms of Fusion Application. This will provide a search based on a particular term or word, say “Worker”, and will allow it to be adjusted, say to “Employee”, which then updates all the Resource Bundles that contain it. In the case of multi-language environments, it will use the users session language (locale) to know which Resource Bundles to apply the change to. This capability will also support customization sandboxes, to help ensure changes can be tested and approved.  It is also interesting to note that the design currently allows any page-specific customizations done using Page Composer or Application Composer to over-write the global changes done via the UI Text Editor, allowing for special context-sensitive values to still be used. Further Reading and Resources The following short list provides the mains resources for digging into more detail on translation support for both Composer and JDeveloper customization projects. There is a dedicated chapter entitled “Translating Custom Text” in the Fusion Applications Extensibility Guide. This has good examples and steps for many tasks, especially administering resource bundles. Using localization formatting (numbers, dates etc) for design-time changes is well documented in the Fusion Applications Developer Guide. • Roundcube "Server Error (OK!)": Lists no messages but can get messages according to the log file

  In my server setup there are three virtual machines. One windows machine, an Ubuntu Server 11.10 and a Debian Squeeze mailserver. On the Ubuntu system I have Roundcube installed and I want to connect to the virtual mail server. What's the problem After login into Roundcube it says "Server Error (OK!)" and lists no messages. More information On the Ubuntu server there is no error in any log file (even Roundcubes log files). In the imap log file there you can see Roundcube is able to fetch all imap messages (I can see them in the imap log file created by Roundcube). And on the side of the mail server there are no error messages too. The test connection at the end of the configuration of Roundcube works too, there is a "success" notification. Even the basic login at Roundcube login dialog works without any error message. • How to Update Remote Diagnostic Agent (RDA) to Latest Version?

  Remote Diagnostic Agent (RDA) 4.28 was released on 12th June. Full details can be found in this My Oracle Support documentRDA 4 Release Notes [ID 414970.1]From a Fusion Middleware Core Component, Install and Administration perspective this latest release does not offer any significant new features or changes. However, despite the lack of Fusion Middleware specific new features in version 4.28, Remote Diagnostic Agent still comes as highly recommended. It is incredibly useful problem solving / troubleshooting aid. Support engineers dealing with Service Requests often request RDA output as it collects just about everything you might need to get a view of the state and configuration of the host operating system, network setup and Fusion Middleware components. • How do I determine which HD is involved in the Event Viewer?

  My PC apparently crashed before I came home from work (so my daugthers tell me; they rebooted it). The first thing I did, after it came up, was got into the Event Viewer to see what it said. Several hours before they rebooted it, there's a message in the event viewer that says: The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk5\DR5 I've no idea what that means. I got into Computer Manager, to take a look at the disks on my machine. There's only 1 hard drive, and a few slots for microSD, etc, but none of them are labeled "Harddisk5", nor is there anything there labeled "DR5". How do I determine what, if anything, those are? Could they be USB drives that my daughters used?

• Is there an image viewer which *won't* show every file in the current folder?

  Looking for a Windows image viewer which can be started from the command line but which allows me to specify/restrict which files I want it to page through. As parameters. The good 'ol Windows Picture Viewer would be fine except that it'll show/cycle through all the pictures in the current folder. In my case I want to say something like: someimgvwr.exe "cat.jpg" "cow.jpg" "cub.jpg" so that only those three files will be displayed and not "pig.jpg" which might also happen to be there in the same folder. Actually, if it allowed something like this: someimgvwr.exe "c*.jpg" that would be even more perfect. Do any of the many image viewers that are out there allow such a thing?

  How do I log from within my web application deployed on Tomcat 6? Where should I expect the logging output to go (internal tomcat log files, or will another logfile be generated)? I see a ton of documentation but am having a hard time finding a direct answer to the above questions. Where should I expect the logging to show up (currently it is log4j is not generating a log file and it is not showing up in my console). • Best XML format for log events in terms of tool support for data mining and visualization?

  We want to be able to create log files from our Java application which is suited for later processing by tools to help investigate bugs and gather performance statistics. Currently we use the traditional "log stuff which may or may not be flattened into text form and appended to a log file", but this works the best for small amounts of information read by a human. After careful consideration the best bet has been to store the log events as XML snippets in text files (which is then treated like any other log file), and then download them to the machine with the appropriate tool for post processing. I'd like to use as widely supported an XML format as possible, and right now I am in the "research-then-make-decision" phase. I'd appreciate any help both in terms of XML format and tools and I'd be happy to write glue code to get what I need. What I've found so far: log4j XML format: Supported by chainsaw and Vigilog. Lilith XML format: Supported by Lilith Uninvestigated tools: Microsoft Log Parser: Apparently supports XML. OS X log viewer: plus there is a lot of tools on http://www.loganalysis.org/sections/parsing/generic-log-parsers/ Any suggestions?

• Cisco Unifed Communication integration for Microsoft Lync crashes on Remote Desktop services 2008 R2!

• Cisco Unified Communication integration for Microsoft Lync crashes on Remote Desktop services 2008 R2!

  Hi everybody i have deployed office communication server 2007 R2 and communicator 2007 R2 and i made integration with Cisco Unified Communication Manager 7.1 in my network, i also use Remote Desktop Servers 2008 R2 for Thin Client Computers, now that i installed Cisco UC integration client for communicator 2007 R2 (Ver. 8.0.3) or Cisco UC integration client for Microsoft Lync that works fine on PCs but Not on Remote Desktop Servers. i have Three Remote Desktop Servers in a Farm with loadbalancing enabled. all other applications on these RDP servers works fine for 120 active users. some times when i start Cisco UC client on Remote Desktop servers i get the following error: "The Port Reguired for callbacks from Cisco unified client framework could not be read, please retry" i also found the folowing log so i think that may be the cause: 2011-01-05 08:24:21,489 [INFO ] [com.cisco.uc.ucsf.ProblemReportingTool.controller.SingleInstanceManager] [SingleInstanceManager.acquireMutex(0)] -
