  • Interview Question: .Any() vs if (.Length > 0) for testing if a collection has elements

    In a recent interview I was asked what the difference between .Any() and .Length > 0 was and why I would use either when testing to see if a collection had elements. This threw me a little as it seems a little obvious but feel I may be missing something. I suggested that you use .Length when you simply need to know that a collection has elements and .Any() when you wish to filter the results. Presumably .Any() takes a performance hit too as it has to do a loop / query internally.

  • Question about the ITextUndoHistory that gets returned from TryGetHistory

    Everytime the IWpfTextView's TextBuffer changes I am trying to get the history's redostack and undostack and simply checking the count. When doing this I am encountering a "Method not supported exception" when trying to access the two stacks. Am I retrieving the history incorrectly or does VS not want me seeing/editing the contents of the stacks? I can post the code if necessary... Thanks, Nick

  • Java EE - newbie question (not related to learning JEE)

    I've read lot of articles saying, that Java EE is most popular enterprise solution nowadays. Let's not argue if it is most popular or second most popular or what. The thing is : I see almost all web pages with extension like .html, .php and .aspx. Why there is (almost) none .JSP ? Why so ease to find ASP.NET pages if it is supposed to be less popular? Please I am not programming with Java EE (yet) so don't blame me, if I am completely wrong. The answer with patience would be greatly appreciated!

  • c++ std::map question about iterator order

    Hi all, I am a C++ newbie trying to use a map so I can get constant time lookups for the find() method. The problem is that when I use an iterator to go over the elements in the map, elements do not appear in the same order that they were placed in the map. Without maintaining another data structure, is there a way to achieve in order iteration while still retaining the constant time lookup ability? Please let me know.     Hello, I am having a form and many input elements in that. I want certain fields to be validated, so i keep validateLenth etc on those. And i want some fields to not be validated. For example, i have contact information and address information both on the same page. I want to treat contact information as one group. So if some fields are invalid they should not be submitted and address information to be independent of contact information. Thus, if address information is corrected it should be submitted. I have one form only on the page but two buttons, one for address and one for contact. Simply put :- What is the equivalent of validationGroup of Asp.Net in JSF?

    Hi , I just want to check if I understood well the way asynchronous Http request work on Android. Suppose I make such a request and set a ResponseHandler<String> responseHandler to handle the response. By doing this is it possible to have the UI thread blocked waiting for the response ? The implication being that the code in the function: public String handleResponse(HttpResponse response) is also executed on the UI thread or is there silently spawned a thread that waits for the response and calls the handleResponse(HttpResponse response) function when the response arrives ?

  • Zend Framework Autoloader question.

    In zend framework I register my namespace like this (in application.php): 'autoloaderNamespaces' => array( 'Cms_' ) And after this - I'd expect that Zend would always check that path in addition to Zend and ZendX paths if unknown class is called. But for some reason this doesn't work with for example view helpers. I still have to register a separate path for my view helpers even though view helper scripts are named according to Zend coding standards and are located in: Cms/View/Helper/ And this is how I register helper path in config file: view' => array( 'charset' => 'UTF-8', 'doctype' => 'XHTML1_TRANSITIONAL', 'helperPath' => array( 'Cms_View_Helper_' => 'Cms/View/Helper' ) ), So - I'm not sure why I have to register "Cms" namespace twice first through 'autoloaderNamespaces' and then through View "helperPath"? Shouldn't Cms namespace include Cms/View/Helper namespace? can someone plz clarify this:)

    During a recent job interview, I was asked to give a solution to the following problem: Given a string s (without spaces) and a dictionary, return the words in the dictionary that compose the string. For example, s= peachpie, dic= {peach, pie}, result={peach, pie}. I will ask the the decision variation of this problem: if s can be composed of words in the dictionary return yes, otherwise return no.     Want to verify that my understanding of how this works. Have an unmanaged C++ Class with one public instance variable: char* character_encoding; and whose only constructor is defined as: TF_StringList(const char* encoding = "cp_1252"); when I use this class in either managed or unmanaged C++, the first thing I do is declare a pointer to an object of this class: const TF_StringList * categories; Then later I instantiate it: categories = new TF_StringList(); this gives me a pointer to an object of type TF_StringList whose variable character_encoding is set to "cp_1252"; So, is all that logic valid?     The following code is working sort of fine: open( PIPE, '-|', 'ant' ); for( <PIPE> ) { print; } However, it doesn't do what I want. Since the Ant build can take 5 minutes, I would like to see the output line by line. Instead, I'm getting the entire input at the end of the process. Looking at it with the Perl debugger, Perl waits at the 'for' statement, until Ant terminates. Why is that?

  • Database Design Question: GUID + Natural Numbers

    For a database I'm building, I've decided to use natural numbers as the primary key. I'm aware of the advantages that GUID's allow, but looking at the data, the bulk of row's data were GUID keys. I want to generate XML records from the database data, and one problem with natural numbers is that I don't want to expose my database key's to the outside world, and allow users to guess "keys." I believe GUID's solve this problem. So, I think the solution is to generate a sparse, unique iD derived from the natural ID (hopefully it would be 2-way), or just add an extra column in the database and store a guid (or some other multibyte id) The derived value is nicer because there is no storage penalty, but it would be easier to reverse and guess compared to a GUID. I'm (buy) curious as to what others on SO have done, and what insights they have.

  • Multi-threaded downloader in C# question

    Currently I have multi-threaded downloader class that uses HttpWebRequest/Response. All works fine, it's super fast, BUT.. the problem is that the data needs to be streamed while it's downloading to another app. That means that it must be streamed in the right order, the first chunk first, and then the next in the queue. Currently my downloader class is sync and Download() returns byte[]. In my async multi-threaded class I make for example, list with 4 empty elements (for slots) and I pass each index of the slot to each thread using the Download() function. That simulates synchronization, but that's not what I need. How should I do the queue thing, to make sure the data is streamed as soon as the first chunk start downloading.
