  • How to model a social news feed on Google App Engine

    - by PEZ
We want to implement a "News feed" where a user can see messages broadcasted by her friends, sorted with newest message first. But the feed should reflect changes in her friends list. (If she adds new friends, messages from those should be included in the feed, and if she removes friends their messages should not be included.) If we use the pubsub-test example and attach a recipient list to each message this means a lot of manipulation of the message recipients lists when users connect and disconnect friends. We first modeled publish-subscribe "fan out" using conventional RDBMS thinking. It seemed to work at first, but then, since the IN operator works the way it does, we quickly realized we couldn't continue on that path. We found Brett Slatkin's presentation from last years Google I/O and we have now watched it a few times but it isn't clear to us how to do it with "dynamic" recipient lists. What we need are some hints on how to "think" when modeling this.

  • Learning JavaScript... Should I skip straight to the good stuff (the frameworks)?

    - by Grogs
I learnt HTML/CSS a good few years back, then PHP a little later. I've recently become interesting in web development again, just started playing with frameworks like Django and RoR. I'm curious as to how much time/effort I should spend learning straight JS before looking at frameworks. I've been reading through a let of articles called Mastering AJAX by Brett McLaughlin which seems quite good, but I'm seeing a lot of stuff (such as cross browser compatibility - even for things like XMLHttpRequest) coming up which look like they would be non-issues if using a framework. So, should I keep reading through these articles and try to build stuff using basic JS, or should I just start looking into jQuery and the like? Also, I've been watching a few videos regarding GWT from Google I/O. I've been learning Java over the last year, built a few medium sized apps in it. I'm wondering if GWT is something that's worth going straight to, along with gQuery?

  • Bulk get of child entities on Google app engine?

    - by dfrankow
On Google App Engine in Python, I have a Visit entity that has a parent of Patient. A Patient may have multiple visits. I need to set the most_recent_visit (and some auxiliary visit data) somewhere for later querying, probably in another child entity that Brett Slatkin might call a "relationship index entity." I wish to do so in a bulk style as follows: 1. get 100 Patient keys 2. get all Visits that have any of the Patients from 1 as an ancestor 3. go through the Visits and get the latest for each Patient Is there any way to perform step 2 in a bulk get? I know there is a way to bulk get entities from a list of keys, and there is a way to match a single entity by its ancestor.

  • JFall 2012

    - by Geertjan
JFall 2012 was over far too soon! Seven tracks going on simultaneously in a great location, with many artifacts reminding me of JavaOne, and nice snacks and drinks afterwards. The day started, as such things always do, with a keynote. Thanks to @royvanrijn for the photo below, I didn't take any myself and without a picture this report might have been too dry: What you see above is Steve Chin riding into the keynote hall on his NightHacking bike. The keynote was interesting, I can't be too complimentary about it, since I was part of it myself. Bert Ertman introduced the day and then Steve Chin took over, together with Sharat Chander, Tom Eugelink, Timon Veenstra, and myself. We had a strict choreography for the keynote, one that would ensure a lot of variation and some unexpected surprises, such as Steve being thrown off the stage a few times by Bert because of mentioning JavaOne too many times, rather than the clearly much cooler JFall. Steve talked about JavaOne and the direction Java is headed in, Sharat talked about JavaME and embedded devices, Steve and Tom did a demo involving JavaFX, I did a Project Easel demo, and Timon from Ordina talked about his Duke's Choice Award winning AgroSense project. I think the Project Easel demo (which I repeated later in a screencast for Parleys arranged by Eugene Boogaart) came across well and several people I spoke to especially like the roundtrip/bi-directional work that can be done, from browser to IDE and back again, very simply and intuitively. (In a long conversation on the drive back home afterwards, the scenario of a designer laying out the UI in HTML and then handing the HTML to a developer for back-end work, a developer who would then find it convenient to open the HTML in a browser and quickly navigate from the browser to the resources within the IDE, was discussed and considered to be extremely interesting and worth considering adopting NetBeans for, for no other reason than that.) Later I attended a session by David Delabassee on Java EE 7, Hans Dockter on Gradle, and Sander Mak on cross-build injection attacks. I was sorry to have missed Martijn Verburg's session, which sounded like it was really fantastic, among others, such as Gerrit Grunwald. I did a session too, entitled "Unlocking the Java EE 6 Platform", which was very well attended, pretty much a full room, and the demo went very smoothly. I talked to many people, e.g., a long time with Hans Dockter about how cool Gradle is and how great the Gradle/NetBeans plugin is turning out to be. I also had a long conversation (and did a demo) with Chris Chedgey, from Structure101, after his session, which was incredibly well attended; very interesting how popular modularity is. I met several people for the first time, as well as some colleagues from past places I've worked at. All in all, it was a great conference, unfortunately too short, which was very well attended (clearly over 1000) people, with several international speakers, as well as international attendees such as Mattias Karlsson, Sweden JUG leader. And, unsurprisingly, I came across NetBeans Platform applications again, none of which I had ever heard of before. In each case, "our fat client application" was mentioned in passing, never as a main application, and never in a context where there are plans for the application to be migrated to the web or mobile, simply because doing so makes no business sense at all. Great times at JFall, looking forward to meeting with some of the people I met again soon.

  • Postfix log.... spam attempt?

    - by luri
I have some weird entries in my mail.log. What I'd like to ask is if postfix is avoiding correctly (according with the main.cf attached below) what seems to be relay attempts, presumably for spamming, or if I can enhance it's security somehow. In this All Submittal Issue: Colin Eberhardt, Ken Johnson, Alan Beasley, Pencho Popadiyn, Phil Middlemiss, Khawar(-2-), Levente Mihály, Alex van Beek, Bart Czernicki, Michael Washington, and Mark Monster. Shoutout: Not Silverlight necessarily, but definitely VS2010, read what Brett Balmer has to say In Defense of Portrait Mode From SilverlightCream.com: Silverlight MultiBinding solution for Silverlight 4 Colin Eberhardt updated his Silverlight Multibinding solution to Silverlight 4. Great article with explanatory graphics, and links to the code... congrats on the use in the FaceBook Client too! Spirograph Shapes: WPF Bezier shapes from math formulae Wow... I haven't seen this much math since my Master's Thesis! ... Check out all the shapes Ken Johnson has built... don't let the math scare you... just use it :) Busy Dizzy Bee-sley Spirographic Animation in Expression Blend and Silverlight This is just fun... I saw Michael Washington playing with this yesterday at the Arizona Day of .NET but didn't have a chance to ask what it was.. Alan Beasley had a good time building this, and is sharing a very detailed tutorial with us. ModalDialogs, IEditableObject and MVVM in Silverlight 4 Pencho Popadiyn said the 'M' word over at SilverlightShow... actually the 'MVVM' word :) ... he's discussing Modal dialogs with no code in the View ... check out how he did it. A Chrome and Glass Theme - Part 6 Phil Middlemiss is up to episode 6 in his Theme-building tutorial... this time out, he's giving the TabControl and TabItem new clothes ... specifically discussing what to change and what to allow to inherit ... good stuff! Silverlight 4 Fonts gotcha Check out Khawar's ATM Machine demo -- there's a link on the page for this post... he had an issue with fonts, ratted it out, and explains it for all of us... thanks Khawar Demystifying Silverlight Obfuscation Khawar also has a good post up on Obfuscating your Silverlight... definitely showing that it's not all that difficult to do. geoGallery, a WinPhone7 sample OK this is interesting... using the geoLocation feature of WP7, Levente Mihály hits Google Picasa to find pictures... good write-up and all the code. Silverlight 4: Digitally signing a XAP with Visual Studio 2010 Alex van Beek has a nice tutorial on Signing your XAP file using Visual Studio 2010... of course you may want to visit Tim Heuer's blog (search at SC) to find the two good deals on certificates that are still in play. Creating Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) in Expression Blend 4 for Business Intelligence applications In an interesting post, Bart Czernicki describes using the shape assets in Blend 4 to produce a KPI display in Silverlight or WPF. A discussion of the shape's evolution for KPI is included as well as some alternate shape uses. A DotNetNuke Silverlight 4 Drag and Drop File Manager Michael Washington has blogged about his Drag and Drop File Manager using the View Model Style pattern. This is covered in two CodeProject articles listed in the post. The design work was done by Alan Beasely and links to his work is there as well as covered in other SC posts. How to select a ListItem on Hover Mark Monster had a Use Case for Selecting a ListBox entry by hovering ... but he did it with a Behavior and for a ListBox and PathListBox and it works with DataBinding... • Synchronized Property Changes (Part 4)

    - by Geertjan
The next step is to activate the undo/redo functionality... for a Node. Something I've not seen done before. I.e., when the Node is renamed via F2 on the Node, the "Undo/Redo" buttons should start working. Here is the start of the solution, via this item in the mailing list and Timon Veenstra's BeanNode class, note especially the items in bold: public class ShipNode extends BeanNode implements PropertyChangeListener, UndoRedo.Provider { private final InstanceContent ic; private final ShipSaveCapability saveCookie; private UndoRedo.Manager manager; private String oldDisplayName; private String newDisplayName; private Ship ship; public ShipNode(Ship bean) throws IntrospectionException { this(bean, new InstanceContent()); } private ShipNode(Ship bean, InstanceContent ic) throws IntrospectionException { super(bean, Children.LEAF, new ProxyLookup(new AbstractLookup(ic), Lookups.singleton(bean))); this.ic = ic; setDisplayName(bean.getType()); setShortDescription(String.valueOf(bean.getYear())); saveCookie = new ShipSaveCapability(bean); bean.addPropertyChangeListener(WeakListeners.propertyChange(this, bean)); } @Override public Action[] getActions(boolean context) { List<? extends Action> shipActions = Utilities.actionsForPath("Actions/Ship"); return shipActions.toArray(new Action[shipActions.size()]); } protected void fire(boolean modified) { if (modified) { ic.add(saveCookie); } else { ic.remove(saveCookie); } } @Override public UndoRedo getUndoRedo() { manager = Lookup.getDefault().lookup( UndoRedo.Manager.class); return manager; } private class ShipSaveCapability implements SaveCookie { private final Ship bean; public ShipSaveCapability(Ship bean) { this.bean = bean; } @Override public void save() throws IOException { StatusDisplayer.getDefault().setStatusText("Saving..."); fire(false); } } @Override public boolean canRename() { return true; } @Override public void setName(String newDisplayName) { Ship c = getLookup().lookup(Ship.class); oldDisplayName = c.getType(); c.setType(newDisplayName); fireNameChange(oldDisplayName, newDisplayName); fire(true); fireUndoableEvent("type", ship, oldDisplayName, newDisplayName); } public void fireUndoableEvent(String property, Ship source, Object oldValue, Object newValue) { ReUndoableEdit reUndoableEdit = new ReUndoableEdit( property, source, oldValue, newValue); UndoableEditEvent undoableEditEvent = new UndoableEditEvent( this, reUndoableEdit); manager.undoableEditHappened(undoableEditEvent); } private class ReUndoableEdit extends AbstractUndoableEdit { private Object oldValue; private Object newValue; private Ship source; private String property; public ReUndoableEdit(String property, Ship source, Object oldValue, Object newValue) { super(); this.oldValue = oldValue; this.newValue = newValue; this.source = source; this.property = property; } @Override public void undo() throws CannotUndoException { setName(oldValue.toString()); } @Override public void redo() throws CannotRedoException { setName(newValue.toString()); } } @Override public String getDisplayName() { Ship c = getLookup().lookup(Ship.class); if (null != c.getType()) { return c.getType(); } return super.getDisplayName(); } @Override public String getShortDescription() { Ship c = getLookup().lookup(Ship.class); if (null != String.valueOf(c.getYear())) { return String.valueOf(c.getYear()); } return super.getShortDescription(); } @Override public void propertyChange(PropertyChangeEvent evt) { if (evt.getPropertyName().equals("type")) { String oldDisplayName = evt.getOldValue().toString(); String newDisplayName = evt.getNewValue().toString(); fireDisplayNameChange(oldDisplayName, newDisplayName); } else if (evt.getPropertyName().equals("year")) { String oldToolTip = evt.getOldValue().toString(); String newToolTip = evt.getNewValue().toString(); fireShortDescriptionChange(oldToolTip, newToolTip); } fire(true); } } Undo works when rename is done, but Redo never does, because Undo is constantly activated, since it is reactivated whenever there is a name change. And why must the UndoRedoManager be retrieved from the Lookup (it doesn't work otherwise)? Don't get that part of the code either. Help welcome!

  • Show users a list of unique items on Java Google App Engine

    - by James
I've been going round in circles with what must be a very simple challenge but I want to do it the most efficient way from the start. So, I've watched Brett Slatkin's Google IO videos (2008 & 2009) about building scalable apps including http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AgaL6NGpkB8 and read the docs but as a n00b, I'm still not sure. I'm trying to build an app on GAEJ similar to the original 'hotornot' where a user is presented with an item which they rate. Once they rate it, they are presented with another one which they haven't seen before. My question is this; is it most efficient to do a query up front to grab x items (say 100) and put them in a list (stored in memcache?) or is it better to simply make a query for a new item after each rating. To keep track of the items a user has seen, I'm planning to keep those items' keys in a list property of the user's entity. Does that sound sensible? I've really got myself confused about this so any help would be much appreciated.
