  • Free Google Docs alternative compatible with Opera

    Well gDocs isn't working ok, too many bugs and it's pretty slow (especially when saving documents). I have tried several alternatives: - Zoho - they say it's not compatible with Opera and it;s true - you even can't CTRL+V text - Buzzword - it's really slow, and some functions don't work properly (on all browsers) for example "increase indent" increases a random text indent - Etherpad - was taken over by google and is shut down - Peepel - it's a cool thing, almost a free virtual desktop in a browser but it's buggy - a saved a document, tried to open it end an error occured. the document was lost - OpenGoo - went commercial At the moment I'm testing ThinkFree Online - it'a a bit slow (Java :P) and some minor things don't work (like drag a toolbar) but it has cool functionalities (almost like OpenOffice! which I use at home), it actually works with opera (create, save, edit document). Maybe I'll try Scribd but is it a office/share platform? any other worth trying??

  • Looking for an easier Skype video chat alternative

    Is there any software 'easier to use' than Skype - ie to get a video conversation going you have to turn on the computer, make sure the speakers are turned on, make sure the web cam is connected, make sure you click answer with Video... I would like to buy a 'single red button' which does all of the above. - Any recommendations? Update @Eric Koslow comment My original question title was "Is there any software/hardware 'easier to use' than Skype?" So the answer is not necessarily a computer running a program, although it might be. I realise Skype makes a good attempt at helping to ensure speakers and web cam are working and helps you to sort them out if they are not, and for a person who isnt computer phobic this should be enough. However I am interested if there is anything available that is 'easier' than this - ie I'm looking for my 'single' red button. ie the mobile phone with video call maybe the closest answer so far, but I would prefer something as 'free' as Skype is.

    PuTTY is good at what it does, but I'm somewhat envious of Mac Terminal and even Ubuntu's Terminal. I'm looking for good alternatives to PuTTY that would include some of the aesthetics found in Mac and Ubuntu's Terminal applications. Tabs! The ability to drop the window's opacity The ability to open right to the command prompt and ssh in (no intial config window every time) Etc. Feel free to share any Windows terminal applications you would recommend. Or maybe it's possible to get PuTTY to do some of these things. Whatever, I'm cool with that.

  • How do I find iTunes library folder on Mac and Windows?

    I made an application that parse the iTunes library to retrieve its content. It works fine in most cases but if a user moved his library somewhere else than the default iTunes folder (see: http://lifehacker.com/238296/ultranewb--how-to-move-your-itunes-library-to-an-external-drive), then I need a way to find this path. On Mac, I was looking into ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iTunes.plist. There is a setting called "alis:1:iTunes Library Location" but it contains several parameters all concatenated and converted to hexadecimal. On Windows, I found this file "C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunesPrefs.xml" that contains a setting "iTunes Library XML Location:1" but this one is encoded. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Hi, iTunes Visualizer plugin in C#. Easiest way to compute the "energy level" for a particular sample? I looked at this writeup on beat detection over at GameDev and have had some success with it (I'm not doing beat detection per se, but it's relevant). But ultimately I'm looking for a stupid-as-possible, quick-and-dirty approach for demo purposes.   • Why does iTunes sometimes loose everything in the library when upgrading?

    All of my kids have experienced problems at one time or another, when upgrading iTunes on their laptops. The version number doesn't matter, as this has happened for the last couple of years, so the version number has changed. It isn't consistent. What is consistent is sometimes, but not always, after upgrading iTunes, it will have lost all of it's information about the music, podcasts, etc, that it had. And yet if I bring up Windows Explorer, I can find all of it there. It's a pain to have to recover that. The pertinent question is, how do you recover all of the music, podcasts, playlists, etc, that is on the computer, but iTunes doesn't show it in the library? Second, what causes iTunes to do this in the first place?

    I recently bought a new computer, and installed iTunes 9 on it, mainly to subscribe to podcasts. All my regular podcasts are saved as subscriptions in iTunes om my old computer. Is there any way to save myself entering in all the subscriptions individually on my new computer, by maybe exporting the podcast list as an OPML file, or otherwise saving that list out of iTunes?

    I am one of those people who hate to have even one unnecessary program installed. I noticed when I downloaded and installed itunes two other components were installed and shows up in my control panel Uninstall programs screen: "Bonjour" and "Apple Mobile Device Support". Are these two necessary for itunes to work? I never buy songs via itunes, just use the program to transfer smp3s to my ipod.

  • Why does my iTunes use so much CPU time?

    I have a roughly 2 year old Macbook (10.5). I have iTunes 10. When iTunes is playing MP3s, I see CPU usage of the iTunes process in the system monitor ranging from 65%-75%. When I pause the music, I see CPU usage of about 65%-75%. I do not have any visualisations going, to my knowledge I have not turned on any CPU destroying features, my music library isn't tiny, but it's hardly huge (3GB). This is mildly annoying when I'm plugged into the wall as I only have slightly longer compile times, but if I am out and about, this is a major drain on the battery. Using VLC I see CPU loads of ~= 10% at the most when listening to music and generally lower. What the heck is iTunes doing?

  • How do I make my play/pause keyboard button work correctly in iTunes 10 on Windows?

    First and foremost, I have mmKeys installed correctly. My iTunes works almost perfect while minimized to the tray. My problem is with the play/pause button on my Wireless Comfort Keyboard 5000. When iTunes does not have focus (like it's minimized, or if it isn't the application I'm active in, like right now while typing this) the play pause button toggles twice. So, I'll push the pause button - and the song that is playing will pause, but a split second later will start up again. If the song is paused, and I push play, the song will immediately pause again. In order to get the key to work correctly, I must give iTunes focus, and then push the button.     I would like to modify the filesystem path for tracks on itunes programmatically, so that I can apply a string transformation to some of the tracks locations (which are now stored in a different places on the filesystem). I've tried using AppleScript to update the location property of the relevant tracks but I get an end-of-file error when calling "set mytrack's location to ..." I've seen various other hacks online that involve exporting the entire track db, modifying it in XML, and then reimporting it - but that seems to lose too much metadata (such as playlists).
