  • Is this normal or does my AVG anitivirus have a virus? [closed]

    Possible Duplicate: Computer is infected by a virus or a malware, what do I do now? [Note: This is not a duplicate and should not be closed as a duplicate as this is nothing like the other question. I am not asking if I have a virus, nor am I asking "what do I do now". I know that I have a virus and I know what to do. However, I am asking if these are normal AVG ads or if it has been taken over.] My Windows XP PC started acting strange and I am right now actually in Linux running off of a USB drive. I am running Avast under Linux and it has discovered some viruses on my XP drive. Some of the strange things happening in XP were: I could not get to Google.com My Hosts file was set to hidden and read only My Hosts file had an entry of ::1 And AVG had ads in it I've never seen before. Maybe it is normal but I Binged for AVG anti-virus and become.com but found no information. (The red lines and question mark are by me) Any thoughts?

  • Bitdefender rescue disk does not show my C drive

    My machine (winXP) is infected with virus and I am unable to start my machine. Therefore I have used BitDefender rescue disk to remove the viruses. But I am not able to see my C drive. All other drivers are able to see and scan. Even after I removed all viruses, my machine is not starting. Giving the same error message. I think due to viruse it is not visible to bitdefender. Please help me out. Appreciate your help.

  • Recommended offline on-demand virus scanners

    I have never run full anti-virus on my Windows XP systems. Instead I use various anti-malware tools to manually perform scans every few weeks. This approach, combined with Windows updates and general care about what web-sites I visit and what files I download has kept me 99% free of problems. The remaining 1% has occurred when I download files that I know may contain malware, but still decide the risk is worth it. When on 2 occasions in 10 years I did get caught doing this, I realised that being able to easily scan them would most likely have avoided getting infected. I don't need, or want, to run a "stay resident" anti-virus. Also, the online scanners such as Kaspersky etc limit uploads to small files, so these are not always useful. In summary I would like to simply be able to download a file and then manually initiate an on demand anti-virus scan, on the downloaded file only. I'm sure some/most Anti-Virus do both, however once again I don't really want to pay for or need the stay resident part. Any recommendations (commercial or free)? UPDATE: This is not an exact duplicate, nor a possible duplicate. I searched for and read other questions on anti-virus here at SuperUser and found none that answered my question. I am specifically asking about anti-virus scanners that run ON-DEMAND locally on the computer, not online scanners.

  • What is the best way to run ClamAV on Windows Server 2008 R2

    I'm hosting a Wordpress-site on Windows Server 2008 RS and want to scan all files that are uploaded by users for viruses using this plugin http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/upload-scanner/. I'm on a really tight budget (no profit) so ClamAV seem like a good choice. What is the best way to run ClamAV under these circumstances? I'm concidering the following options: Just running the raw windows build from http://sourceforge.net/projects/clamav/ an setup definition updates with task scheduler. Any way to automate updates of the scanner (binaries)? Using a "distro" like ClamWin or Immunet (advertised on clamav.net). Any suggestions are welcome.

    So I was thinking about viruses recently, and wondering how exactly antiviruses keep up? Considering anybody who'd been coding for a few weeks could hack together something do do nasty, nasty things to somebody's PC, the quantity alone would make a simple list of hashes prohibitive, so how do antiviruses do it? Do they monitor process activity and have a 3 strikes rule for doing virus-like things? And if so, what's stopping it from triggering on perfectly harmless things (like me moving files around in \system32)? I did a bit of googling, but the regular places didn't particularly help, and I couldn't find a dupe here, so I thought it'd be good to ask :)

  • AVG Installer Error

    my computer is running window XP home editon. the avg i am using is expirying soon and so a pop out ask me to install AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 2011. When the download is about to complete, i was ask to reboot the computer, i click "OK". after my computer restart , there was a pop out say "AVG Installer- Error A system restart is required in order to continue with the installation. Please restart your system and try again." Since the only option was "OK" i click it, and restart my computer. After restarting, the same pop-out appear. I could not download AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 2011 as the pop-out keep appearing if i run it or uninstall. can anyone help me?? btw my brower is int

  • Does Antivirus2009 or Antivirus360 automatically install on your computer and if so how?

    I run Firefox on Vista, and unfortunately I got tricked (through a deceptive google result) into going to a page containing one of those fake "Your Computer Has all of this Spyware on it!" pages. I tried manually closing the tab, but it had a "Are you sure you want to navigate away" JavaScript alerts (HATE THOSE). So I clicked "OK," and the tab closed. Then I closed firefox altogether and rebooted. Now, before I could close the tab, it did prompt me to download a file, but of course I choose not to, and checking my downloads folder, nothing new is there. Also, even if I ?did? download it, ?I? would still have to choose to run it by double clicking on it for it to install itself, right? Also, I ran Malware Bites and Windows Defender and both said everything was fine. From this I would normally believe I am safe, but I have read everywhere that this thing "automatically installs" itself and that it is a bitch to get rid of. Is it really possible for this thing to dig in if you are running firefox and didn't choose to download it or run it after downloading?

    I get daily critical errors from Kaspersky involving Explorer.exe... The file in question is almost always in the Recycle Bin, or something on the desktop. Not sure if it's a bug, something to be concerned about, or an easy fix, etc. I usually just empty the recycle bin for a temporary fix, but would like to get to the root of the error. Thoughts?

Is it possible to isolate a mailserver (for example HMailServer) by using VMware Server on Windows 2003 in order to avoid potential viruses moving from the guest into the host system?   • Server side url scanner for malware, spyware , viruses and protect my visitors

    I have a forum/groups site that contains a lot of external URLs, sometimes direct download links. I want to protect my visitors from possible attacks from malware sites as they are mot likely to click on these links. CUrrently I implement DBL (spamhaus) but thats not enough. I want to run a background task to check the outgoing links first. I have looked at similar questions in StackOverflow (wrongly posted there) and here but fail to find a question same as mine or a good answer. People have suggested ClamAV , I don't believe it can detect Web hosted malware sites and its has a lot of missed detection. I have looked at google safe browsing service ( http://code.google.com/apis/safebrowsing/developers_guide_v2.html very complicated to implement or maintain plus midway I get lost :S ) I can go for commercial solution, anything to protect the visitors and my site brand. But I would like to hear the opinion of server admins and if anyone has implemented such a service. My Server is basic CentOS LAMP stack. thank you very much in advance.

  • How can I run Ghost from a bootable USB key drive?

    I have a laptop that does not have a cd-rom or floppy drive. It is able to boot from USB though. I have a disk image (ghost) of the disk that I need to restore back onto the laptop. I can't find a way to actually run the Ghost utility from a USB key though. I believe the ghost.exe should run from within DOS just fine but I can't seem to create a bootable USB key with DOS on it that allows me to run an EXE. Edit: I managed to find a Ghost utility that I could load from a bootable USB drive. Unfortunately, when I plug in my NTFS external drive (USB), it is not detected.

  • Trouble Downloading from some sites

    I am trying to download the new Microsoft Security Essentials but when I click on the Download button instead of getting the Download box popup nothing comes up. The progess bar at the bottom shows it doing something then when it reaches 100% nada. I can down load from HP (Drivers) and sites like Majorgeeks with no problem. I also have this problem on the Adobe download page when trying to get the shockwave and flash player. I am fixing my Granddaughters laptop that she got from someone else. There were over 26 Trojans listed on it when I installed AVG and they would not go away. I used CCleaner and HiJack This and deleted everything I could and wiped the freespace. Then ran AVG again and this time after finding a few Trojans and deleting them the system was reported as clean. IE8 then would not connect to the net so I used my computer to DL a copy and put it on the laptop, after that I was able to use the laptop to connect to the net and download a driver to get the sound working again.     Hi, I am trying to install TeamCity but it was stopped by the malware that keep generating ns??(??=random digit).tmp file. I found that out because the setup process stay still. But when ever I kill the process of the ns??.tmp file, the process continues. I found on google that the ns??.tmp was actually caused by a malware called zlob and I used both Symantec and MS securities essential to scan the whole machine, but nothing was found by that. Anyone have any suggestion?

    Currently we are using ReadyNAS RN102 by NETGEAR to hold all our images from all our machines. My question is can viruses expand from the machines and infect the NAS drive and the backups? We are using AOMEI Backupper. EDIT: Basically, I want to keep my clean backups clean. I keep Daily, Weekly, Monthly achievable backups, my worry is a virus might attempt or try to infect these backups making using them worthless.

    Hi everyone. Currently we are using the Enterprise AV Solution eTrust ITM 8.1. The licenses are running out in october and we are going to replace eTrust with another AV solution. The eTrust Server is running on Windows Server 2003 SP2 with an MS SQL 2000 Standard Edition. The problem is that we've got many different policy - sets which we have to redefine in the new AV solution. Is there any way with eTrust ITM 8.1 to export the different policies as csv, pdf ... whatever?     Is there a database or repository of the legitimate checksums for Microsoft system files? We think we have a 0day on DNS for Windows 2003 SP2 using IRC for command and control. (Latest McAfee does not see an issue). I want to compare our customer's dns.exe and associated DLLs with the real ones. (I will grab a fresh SP2 and hotfixed system to do this, but wonder how to do this in future without needed to do this.)
