• portal/forum for small companies to get technology help

  I understand this is an open ended question and not quite sure how to add this to community wiki, if that is appropriate. I am doing a little research on where small companies would go on the internet to get answers for technology related questions. Could be around sales, servers, programming, etc. Clearly superuser.com, serverfault.com, and stackoverflow.com are excellent starting points. I am just wondering if anyone has heard of any others. Think a "facebook" that links technology providers with small companies to help answer questions and potentially provide/offer solutions. Thanks!

• Configuring Mail Relay

  I'm running Ubuntu Server 9.10 with Postfix and Webmin. I have created virtual hosts for 3 domains following this serverfault.com answer. But the mail isn't relaying out to the world. I have 3 domains tied into my DNS in webmin, as well as inside DNS clicked Mail Server and followed that instruction using this article on the web. The domains and the web servers work just fine. I also have FTP working just fine. So, the remaining problem I have is mail. Can't forward mail out to a Gmail account for some reason. Note I'm just trying to do the "easy version" of Postfix config and if your answer is in Webmin-ease, that would help me. However, I can edit a text file if you suggest.

• Can I use dmraid instead of md (mdadm) to make software RAID-1 and RAID-1+0 volumes?

  On a related question about SSDs and TRIM (see: Possible to get SSD TRIM (discard) working on ext4 + LVM + software RAID in Linux? ), it turns out that dmraid may now (or shortly) support TRIM on RAID-1. Typically, we've used md (via mdadm) to create our RAID-1 volumes, then used LVM to create volume groups, then formatted with the file system of our choice (ext4 lately). We've been doing this for years, and Google & ServerFault searches seem to confirm this is the most common way of doing software RAID with volume management. Google searches seem to suggest that dmraid is use for so-called 'fakeRAID' configurations where there's some level of hardware 'help' in the form of RAID BIOS in the controller, which we don't have (and don't want to use - we'd like a fully software solution). Since we'd like to use TRIM on our SSDs, and since md doesn't seem to (yet?) support TRIM, I'm wondering if it's possible to use dmraid instead of md to create RAID-1 (and RAID-1+0) volumes in software, with no hardware support (ie, just plugged into a dumb SATA/SAS bus)?

• HAProxy MySQL Failover is not starting

  I am trying to setup HAProxy with MySQL failover with Ubuntu. I used a setup similar to this serverfault question, however I am getting the following error when starting haproxy: [ALERT] 341/220001 (17405) : parsing [/etc/haproxy/haproxy.cfg:29] : unknown option 'mysql-check'. [ALERT] 341/220001 (17405) : Error(s) found in configuration file : /etc/haproxy/haproxy.cfg [ALERT] 341/220001 (17405) : Fatal errors found in configuration. I even tried installing the lastest version of HAProxy (1.4.22). Does anyone know how to fix this? I have Google'd the heck out of it and can't find any solution. Thanks for your time!

• Ubuntu and mysql server. Something isnt allowing me to connect

  I have a question about mysql settings http://serverfault.com/questions/94054/remote-connections-and-mysql-on-ubuntu/94088#94088 now i want to figure out why i cannot connect. I made sure bind-address was commented out. I can ping the server within the VM but i cannot ping it from within the VM using mysqladmin --protocol=tcp --host=self_ip ping. I also followed along and check if my ports were open and they look like they are. I setup samba on that VM and can access that with no problem as well. It looks like ubuntu does not have a firewall either (i figured this out before) so i am stumped why the server isnt allowing my connection. Apparently the config file works on another person side http://www.pastie.org/742545 I am using Ubuntu 6.06 LTS just because of 'support' reasons. So hopefully this will be 'easy'?

• How to create a password-less service account in AD?

  Is it possible to create domain accounts that can only be accessed via a domain administrator or similar access? The goal is to create domain users that have certain network access based on their task but these users are only meant for automated jobs. As such, they don't need passwords and a domain admin can always do a run-as to drop down to the correct user to run the job. No password means no chance of someone guessing it or it being written down or lost. This may belong on SuperUser ServerFault but I am going to try here first since it's on the fuzzy border to me. I am also open to constructive alternatives.

• Is a matching entry in /etc/hosts required for hostname?

  I was installing a Tomcat webapp that refused to work until I stumbled on someone else's issue with an unrelated product. The solution was to add the machine's name to /etc/hosts, to match the name returned by hostname. Is this required for general Linux networking to function correctly? My webapp is running in a virtual machine so that I can test the webapp, and I don't normally bother with the /etc/hosts file on VMs. I just shook my fist and cursed Tomcat and webapp's behavior. I read http://serverfault.com/questions/118823, but that doesn't say if it's required or not.

• Connection string during installation

  Hi, I've been convinced to use windows setup files(msi) for the installation of my new windows forms application after I asked a question here and got some excellent answers (thank you all): http://serverfault.com/questions/97039/net-application-deployment Now i have a different question: My application will need to access a SQL Server to provide users with data, which means that the connection string must be stored in the client's app.config file. How should I handle this? During installation, the user enters the connection string to that database? How they get the connection string? In an email from the admin? What if the admin wants to use SQL authentication and need to put the user info at the connection string? So you know, the app will be sold via the internet, so I don't have any access to the admins or the network. Any suggestions? Thanks in advanced.

• HP Laserjet "maintenance interval" vs "fuser life"

  I posted a question about the Laserjet 8100DN earlier here: http://serverfault.com/questions/139043/buying-an-old-laser-printer-what-will-need-to-be-replaced and from doing some more research I have a new question: I found the "maintence interval" -- "the interval at which you should install a maintenance kit" (which is a fuser and rollers), and it is...350,000 pages. BUT, when I look at the specs for an HP 8100 fuser, it says the fuser has a life span of 150,000 pages. What gives? – Will the fuser go bad after 150 or 350? ==== BTW I hope it's ok to ask another similar question in a new thread -- I'm just following instructions from my thread on the topic at Meta.

• Multiple SSL domains on the same IP address and same port?

  I set up an ubuntu 9.10 - apache2 - php5 server. I was under the impression that each valid SSL certificate (no domain wild cards) required it's own unique IP address and port number combination. But the answer to a previous question I posted is at odds with this claim: http://serverfault.com/questions/109766/ssl-site-not-using-the-correct-ip-in-apache-and-ubuntu Using the accepted answer, I was able to get multiple domains, each with it's own valid SSL to work on the same IP address and on port 443. I am very confused as to why the above answer works, especially after hearing from others that each SSL domain website on the same server requires its own IP+port combination. I am suspicious that I did something wrong. Can someone clear up the confusion? • Connect to development server via switch?

  I apologize upfront if this isn't appropriate for superuser. I asked it on serverfault and was told it was too general for that site. I have a laptop with Vista and it receives it's internet connection wireless. I have an old desktop with Ubuntu 10.04 Server Edition installed and it is setup as a development server with Apache, MySQL, and PHP. This works well, with the server having a static IP address. The server is connected to the router via an Ethernet cable. Is it possible to disconnect the cable that is currently connecting the server and the router, then connect the server and workstation to a switch, so that I am still able to connect to the server via web browser from the workstation? I am trying to eliminate the long ethernet cable connecting the server to the router in the other room. I already have a switch, that is why I asked specifically about it. The User::Create and Firewall lines are just realizing a user and 2 firewall rules. I have verified that the /var/lib/puppet/lib/puppet/type/a2mod.rb type has the identifier parameter and it is the same MD5 as the server. I am using Puppet 3.0.1 on both agent and master. Any idea what may cause this?

• Network monitoring solution

  Hello Serverfault ! I have a big distributed system I need to monitor. Background: My system is comprised of two servers, concentrating and controlling the system. Each server is connected to a set of devices (some custom kind of RF controllers, doesnt matter to my question), each device connects to a network switch, and eventually all devices talk to the servers, the protocol between the servers and the devices is UDP, usually the packets are very small, but there are really a LOT of packets. the network is also somewhat complex, and is deployed on a large area physically. i'll have 150-300 of these devices, each generating up to 100+ packets per second, and several network switches, perhaps on 2 different subnets. Question I'm looking for some solution that will allow me to monitor all this mess, how many packets are sent, where, how do they move through the network, bandwidth utilization, throughput, stuff like that. what would you recommend to achieve this? BTW Playing nice with windows is a requirement.

• How to set up a wireless AP with a linux box and SOCKS proxy

  I've got: (1) Linux box (Arch linux to be precise, but that doesn't really matter) (2) Ethernet connection on it (say, eth0) (3) Socks proxy on a remote site (say, remote :port), which can be accessed through (2) (4) Wireless card on local linux box (say, eth1) So, the task is: create a wireless access point using (4) on local site (1) in such a way that all connections from it will go through proxy (3). E.g., when one simply connects to that AP (well, there should be DHCP or something for that) and goes to serverfault.com, all the traffic goes through that SOCKS proxy. • Looking for a free or open-source burner emulator [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Virtual CDR driver I am looking for a free or open-source virtual CD/DVD emulator to run in a Windows environment. What I want is similar to what SlySoft's Virtual Clone Drive or Daemon Tools provides, but the emulated drive needs to be a burner of some type. The burner should be able to save disc images (.iso, .ccd, etc) to my harddrive - basically, the same as if I burned the files to a CD-R, and then ripped them back to a disc image. I have already looked around some and come across 2 - DVD neXt COPY iTurns and NoteBurner M4P. Both of these programs create a virtual CD-RW drive, but they are integrated into their product (for burning from iTunes to create mp3 files) and cannot create disc images. I am currently writing a piece of software that will have the capability to burn disc images onto CDs/DVDs, and I don't want to end up with a 100 coasters while I'm testing my software. • non-GUI connection to local Hyper-V VM without network

  I have a virtual machine on Hyper-V manager (Windows 2008 R2) without a network configured on the VM. From a powershell script running on the host Windows server, I would like to query into the OS of that local VM for certain information (i.e. if a given process has finished completion). I am using codeplex's pshyperv module (https://pshyperv.codeplex.com/) to interact with Hyper-V manager, but the only cmdlet to connect to the vm is 'New-VMConnectSession', which launches a 'vmconnect.exe' connection to the VM. Since vmconnect.exe is essentially RDP, this is not very script-friendly. From within a host's powershell script, is there any way to send a command to a local virtual machine's OS and receive output, if no network is configured on the VM? (I believe Vmware's 'vmrun' utility has this capability) Another way to ask this question: Does Hyper-V have a non-GUI-based form of vmconnect.exe? (PS. Not sure if this was more stackoverflow or serverfault)

• What's more cost effective, Hosting your web startup on Foss or Windows?

  Hi, Not coming from the windows world, I'm confused about licensing. I think my knowledge may be out of date. Before we gave up with windows web servers (IIS 2), we used to have to pay Client Access licence's. This worked out quite expensive. Is it cheaper to host 1000's of users on Windows than use Free open source software tools? http://serverfault.com/questions/124329/network-load-balancing-efficience-and-limits. This post suggests I can pay $15 a month, for unlimited users. I certainly hope that this is unbiased view, I am a professional and use the right technology for the right job. I hope i am not feeling the wrath of a windows (or linux for that matter) fanboy. Perhaps a Microsoft certified Licensing person can clear this up. Should i be recommending to startups windows servers and products over lamp? Cheers!

• How to give everyone access to a office@companyname address and let everyone see what messages were

  This should be simple (because I assume everyone has this problem) but googling and searching of serverfault didn't help much. I'd like all messages sent to our "office@companyname" to be visible by everyone and I'd like anyone to be able to respond. I also need everyone to at least SEE that a given message has already been answered (the ability to see the actual response would be nice). I tried using an shared folder for this but it fails miserably because replying to emails leaves no trace, not even for the user that actually sent the message. I'm open to any kind of solution, even commercial add-on solutions.

• cpnfigure open_basedir under Plesk

  This might be a question for ServerFault, and f it wasn't for the Plesk aspect I would ask it there to start with, so if it's better suited for over there let me know and I'll move it. I'm working on a dedicated server set up as a reseller account with Plesk to manage the domains and server configuration, and i need to add a directory to the local open_basedir configuration for a specific vhost. Given Plesk's normal methodology, I expected to be able to go to /var/www/vhost/{%DOMAINNAME%}/conf and modify vhost.conf and place a new value there, as I have successfully done with other configuration settings for this domain (turning safe_mode off, for instance). When I do so, however, the new setting doesn't take (per phpinfo();). If I edit httpd.conf (which the plesk configuration specifically says not to do in the notes at the top of httpd.conf) the setting takes. Is there something specific about the open_basdir setting that makes it not configurable in vhost.conf? How much trouble am I letting myself in for by editing the vhost-specific httpd.conf (I imagine is someone makes changes in the plesk web interface it might be overwritten, but what other risk is there)? • SharePoint 2007: Moving main site, to be a subsite - How can urls be redirected/changed?

  The setup: SharePoint 2007 (MOSS Enterprise) on WINSVR03/IIS6 One site collection, with one access mapping (http://mainsite) currently I'm moving the main SharePoint site, in our one site collection, to be a subsite in a new site collection. I'm using SharePoint Content Deployment Wizard to complete this task (http://spdeploymentwizard.codeplex.com/). The Question So the main site http://mainsite being moved has many subsites, etc. I want to be sure that urls like this: http://mainsite/subsite/doclib/doc1.docx map to and redirect to the new url: http://newsite/mainsite/subsite/doclib/doc1.docx ? And furthermore: I'm aware of this - http://rdacollaboration.codeplex.com/releases/view/28073 , however is it IIS7 only? That'd wouldn't work for me. Looking at this question - http://serverfault.com/questions/107537/dealing-with-moved-documents-and-sites-in-sharepoint is the only one I see that is similar. Would an IIS redirect of http://mainsite to http://newsite/mainsite work only for the root url?

• SSL to SSL Redirects in IIS - Possible?

  We have a situation where we would like to redirect https://service1.domain.com to https://service2.domain.com. I know this is very simple with http endpoints, but I'm not too sure about https. We have some legacy windows application web service clients that will not be updating their software version soon, and we cannot update their web references to https://service2.domain.com. Is there any way to leave these web service clients pointing to https://service1.domain.com, but have their requests forwarded to (and responded to by) https://service2.comain.com? The old server is running IIS 6.0. The new server is running IIS 7.0. We could probably upgrade it to 7.5 if needed, but I'm not certain. We could also probably make a seamless transition of the old web service to a new server using public DNS, but we cannot change the DNS name of "service1.domain.com." Thanks ServerFault!

• ISPConfig - Unexisting subdomain address goes to an existing one

  I am running Nginx/ISPConfig setup for about 6-7 months. Never had a problem and everything is smooth. But I just noticed that if browse to "blab.example.com", the page opens one of my wordpress blogs on the other domain. No matter what name I use for subdomain, Anything that I enter randomly "b53ks.example.com" still goes to that blog page. I have 3 or 4 different domain names and websites on the same server. But I think I misconfigured somewhere and that might be the cause of this. Lets say I have these domains: example-1.com, example-2.com, another-example.com If I go to anything.example-1.com or serverfault.example-2.com, or google.another-example.com the returned page is my blog at blog.example-1.com Note : I didn't set any subdomain in ISPConfig. Instead, I used "Add new website" for making a subdomain.
