• Slow parity initialization of RAID-5 array on HP Smart Array 411 controller

  On 29th October 2011, I built a RAID-5 array using 4 x 146.8GB Seagate SAS ST3146855SS drives running at 15k connected to a PowerEdge R515 with HP Smart Array P411 controller running Windows 2008 (so nothing particularly unusual). I know that parity initialisation of a RAID-5 array can take some time but it's still running after 2.5 weeks which seems a little unusual. I'd previously built another array on the same controller using 4 x 2TB SATA-2 drives and that did take a while to complete but a) I'm sure it was less than 2.5 weeks, b) that array was ~12 times bigger and c) during initialization, the percentrage slowly increased each day. At the moment, the status display for this new 2nd array simply says "Parity Initialization Status: In Progress" and it's said that since the start. It's this lack of change on the status that worries me the most - feels like it's not actually doing anything. Do you think something has gone wrong or am I being unpatient and for some reason, the status not increasing is normal? I kind of expected a much smaller array on faster drives (15k SAS versus 7.5k SATA-2) to build in a few days. This is our primary SAN running StarWind so my "have a play" options are very limited. This 2nd array is currently in use for one small virtual disk so I could shut the target machine down, move the virtual disk to another drive and try rebuilding.

• Mac Outlook showing all links in smart quotes?

  I was given the task of fixing my friend's email today and really don't know what the problem is. When an email is sent from his laptop (Mac) from Outlook the email address link in the signature shows exactly like this: [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>. Additionally the website link displays like this: www.website.com<http://www.website.com>. And lastly, the image comes through as cid:randomstringofnumbers. When I sent him an email and he sent one back it converted my signature to same weird formatting. Plus, even in the header where it shows our emails, they are displaying the same way: [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>. And the weirdest thing is that this problem seems to be "compounding". So when I scroll down to the last, most recent email in the thread I see this www.website.com<http://www.website.com> next email shows this: www.website.com<http://www.website.com><http://www.website.com> and the next this: www.website.com<http://www.website.com><http://www.website.com><http://www.website.com> This is happening to the emails too, everywhere. I'm thinking this might be something to do with smart quotes and the auto formatting but I'm not sure. Could this be the problem? And if so how do I fix it?

  Hello SO. My websystem im coding with now is integrated from the originally phpBB system. With this i mean when you log on my websystem, you have actually logged into the forum from the login page. Now i came to the "log out" part, and i want to make it smart. Right now its a simply link with logout: <a href="<?php echo BASEDIR; ?>../../ucp.php?mode=logout&sid=<? echo $user->data['session_id']; ?>" style="margin-left: 14px; font-size: 10px;">- Log Out</a> As you see in the link it refers to the forum´s ucp.php?mode=logout, and you need to have the SID variable in it in order to log out right.. anyway.. I want to do this log out part in a smart way, i mean, not so you land on the forum´s "you have now been logged out", i want something maybe like run this page in background when you click, and then it refreshes the current page your on. Or should it be smarter just try to modify the phpbb file ucp.php? I think its hard coded, and not the way I am coding, so thats why i find it abit tricky. Thank you for your answers and examples on how this could be done, in a smart way..

• Intel Rapid Storage / Smart Response SSD caching issue

  Background Recently built my own PC. It works! Almost. It's been a while since getting into the guts of these things, so I'm familiar but may be missing something simple. FYI, I don't care about blowing the OS away -- it's brand new and we can go back from scratch as many times as necessary. Goal / Issue I'd like to use the SSD to take advantage of Intel's Smart Response technology (allows the SSD to act as a cache for HDDs) I would like the SSD cache to act as a cache for my HDDs, which I would like to be in a RAID1 array (so I get the speed from the SSD and the redundancy from the RAID1) However, Windows only sees the drive in device manager (not as a drive), so I'm unsure what to do about that. Related: as far as I know, for this to work, the drives all have to be in a single RAID array (i.e. a RAID0 pairing of the SSD and the RAID1 HDD array). However, when attempting this at the BIOS level, I am told there is not enough space for an array. Steps so Far Moved the SSD onto the Intel controller (I'd had it on the Marvel 6.0 controller instead of the Intel controller, so the BIOS was only seeing it in a strange way) Updated the BIOS of the motherboard to the latest version Reinstalled Intel's RST (iRST?) software several times, as some forums reported it working after reinstalling 3 times (which does not inspire confidence). Checked Intel storage: it does see the SSD as a physical, non-RAID device. However, it says no space exists if I try to create an array. Checked the BIOS: it does not show up in the boot order, but is an option that can be selected under boot options. Tried the firmware update for that model. Issue: the firmware CD doesn't detect a drive; maybe the Intel storage controller is making it difficult? moved the ssd to the marvel controller. The firmware update cd appeared to hang while searching for drives. swapped out the SATA cable for the manufacturer's and moved back to the intel storage controller. Noticed at this point that in the Intel RST software, a device DOES show up in addition to the RAID set -- only shown as a "60 GB internal disk". Windows doesn't appear to see it as a drive, but it does still show in device manager. Move SSD to port from 0-3 on MOBO and set SATA mode to IDE (after disconnecting RAID1 config) to allow the firmware update to work. Firmware was already at the latest version. Next Steps ? • Hard drive had reallocated sectors...but now it magically doesn't! Can I trust it?

  Last week my SMART diagnostics utility, CrystalDiskInfo, reported that the external hard drive that I was saving my backups to had suddenly reported 900+ reallocated sectors. I double-checked to confirm, then ordered a replacement drive. I spent all of this week copying data from that drive to the new drive. But toward the end of the copy, something peculiar happened. CrystalDiskInfo popped up an alert that the reallocated sector count had gone back down to 0. I know that when SMART detects a read error on a block, it adds that block to the current pending reallocation list. If it subsequently is successfully written or read later, it is removed from the list and assumed to be fine, but if a subsequent write fails, it is marked bad and added to the reallocated sector count. What concerns me most is that I've never read anywhere that a sector can be recovered as "good" after it has been marked as a bad sector and remapped. I've just finished running an extended SMART diagnostic, and it found no surface errors. Now I'm doubtful that the manufacturer will honor a warranty claim if the SMART info does not report any problems. Has anyone had this happen? If so, then is the drive, indeed, okay, or should I be concerned about an imminent failure?

• How to "smart resize" a displayed image to original aspect ratio

  I have an application in which end-users can size and position images in a designer. Since the spec calls for the image to be "stretched" to the containing control, the end user can end up with an awkwardly stretched image. To help the user with image sizing I am thinking of implementing a smart resizer function which would allow the the user to easily fix the aspect ratio of the picture so that it no longer appears stretched. The quick way to solve this is to actually provide two options: 1) scale from width 2) scale from height. The user chooses the method and the algorithm adjusts the size of the picture by using the original aspect ratio. For example: A picture is displayed as 200x200 on the designer but the original image is 1024x768 pixels. The user chooses "Smart Size from width" and the new size becomes ~200x150 since the original aspect ratio is ~1.333 That's OK, but how could I make the algorithm smarter and not bother the user by asking which dimension the recalculation should be based on?

I was planning to get the datasets to test my algorithm from openmoko phone, but the phone is mis-behaving and I am finding trouble in generating these time data-sets. User enters ID/Password in the login form, and the application sends that information to the server. The server authenticates the user and sends configuration and data to the application. Different users have different configuration and data for their application. I was concerned that anyone can download the application from the webpage if they know the URL. So I'm trying to change the authentication scheme, so that users can login at the webpage to download the application. I want to send the authentication info from the webpage(Program running at the server) to the smart client app, so that application can download the configuration information from the server, without prompting users to make a login again. How can the webpage send the ID/Passoword to the application securely?

By smart, what I mean is that I only want to show, for example, 2 adjacent pages to the current page, so instead of ending up with a ridiculously long page list, I truncate it. • C++ IDE for Linux with smart reference searching

  Is there an IDE supporting C++ with REALLY smart searching of references? By 'reference' I mean usage of a class (or its member), variable, function in the whole Project or Workspace. There's lots of IDE providing it. Some of them seem just to search for the text with same name giving lots of stuff, others are smarter and check the context (like class boundaries, namespace) but aren't accurate enough. The best I've tried so far was Visual SlickEdit, but still there's more to wish. class C1 { int foo; }; class C2 { int foo; }; For example in this situation when searching for C1::foo references I don't want C2::foo to be shown too. So, is there an IDE that would be so smart?

• Added AJAX controls to toolkit but can't add them to webpage, no smart tags

  Added AJAX controls to my toolkit as per directions online. They appear in the AJAX Toolkit tab in the toolbox just fine. Try to add them to design view and does not work. Tried selecting the textbox and clicking the smart tag to add the extender but there is not smart tag. Googled and found suggestion to reset toolbox and re-add AJAX controls. Did that and problem remains. Any help is appreciated!!!

• Reduce text length to fit cell width in a smart manner

  Hello, I am in project where we are building a simple web calendar using Java EE technologies. We define a table where every row is an employee, and every column represents an hour interval. The table width and column widths are adjustable. In every cell we have a text retrieved from a database, indicating what the employee is doing / should do in that time interval. The problem is that sometimes the text in cells is getting bigger than the actual cell. My task is to make the text more "readable" by reducing it's length in a "smart way" so that it can fit in the cell more "gracefully". For example if initially in a cell I have: "Writing documents", after the resize I should retrieve: "Wrtng. dcmnts" or "Writ. docum." so that the text can fit well. Is there a smart way to do it ? Or removing vocals / split the string in two is enough ?

Smart Search was enabled by default and now I've got a few "finder" tables full of indexed phrases and therms. I wonder if there are any disadvantages if I'd: Disable the Smart Search plugin Remove these 'finder' tables completely Aha, we're using a Search field, which works fine, but I'm not sure what's going to happen if I disable the plugin and remove these tables. Will it then search for phrases in content Joomla tables or simply break w/o missing 'finder' tables Has anyone tried this before?

• Why is my HDD going back from standy?

  My hard drives, connected to Ubuntu server are producing the following log every exactly 5 minutes. The reason I add this value is to put disks into standby mode after 60 seconds, which is happening after that period (checked with hdparm -C). The first clue I thought that smartd was running and spinning the drive. However, I couldn't find it in ps -aux | grep smart. Additionally, iostat does show that nobody accessed those drives, since Blk_read, Blk_wrtn remain unchanged. I also killed all processes that may be doing something with hdd(eg SAMBA). So I guess the problem is solely with hdparm... I have no more clue where that 5 minute value hides.

• Smart card / auditable access for rack KVM tray

  Is there such a thing as a KVM Tray for a standard 19" rack whose use can be validated by a smartcard (or some other auditable authentication method)? It looks like we have a security requirement where just because users have a key to the rack doesn't mean they will be allowed to use the console inside the rack, and rather than just lock the console (and keep track of who has keys), we would prefer to be able to audit the actual user that was attached at the KVM. (It's worth mentioning that I'm aware of the Raritan devices, but they surely can't be the only ones) (If these things existed, I don't think half of the tratoirs that somehow manage to infiltrate CTU on the TV show 24 would ever get away with anything)

• HP ProLiant Smart Array "lock up" code 0x11

  I've a ProLiant DL580 G7 server that experienced a storage subsystem failure during production. The system appeared available and responded to pings, but all I/O access stalled (the system load must have been 100+). The ASR did not trigger at the specified watchdog timeout. I had to force a reboot from the ILO. During POST, I received the following error: A controller failure event occurred prior to this power-up. (Previous lock up code = 0x11) I haven't pulled the ADU report yet, but I'm curious as to what this error actually means. I was not responsible for the the installation, but can see that the firmware is very old. But if there's anything else I should know about the error, I'd like to know for the post-mortem report. edit - I should add that the server had 95 days of uptime prior to the lock up.

• Using a SD card as a smart card for two-step verification for Mac logon

  What I am trying to do is create two-step verification to logon to my mac, one being that you would need to input a SD card (formated with special format or something) and then also have a password. Is there any software out there that could do this or any way of programming it so that once it reads the SD Card it makes the password bar visible for logon. Disabling dnslookup results in no mail being sent. From the logs it appears that email sent to [email protected] uses smart_route_a, but the same email sent from [email protected] to [email protected] is sent using dnslookup. How do I make email from [email protected] be relayed via mail.a.com?
