  Hi I have about 6 months of PHP experience and now I am thinking of starting of learning Zend Framework. I learn best usually from books and I noticed on amazon that the most recent release is for the version 1.8. Zend Framework 1.8 Web Application Development Since the curent version is 1.11 will this be a problem in the future? What is the difference beetween the versions. Can anyone recommend a more recent book for this framework?

• Creating my own PHP framework

  Disclaimer: I don't want to start any flame war so there will not be no name of any framework mentioned. I've been using quite many from the existing PHP frameworks and my experience in each case was similar: everything is nice a the beginning but in the moment you require something non standard you get into lot of problems to fix otherwise simple issues. In case of frameworks following the MVC design pattern there are some issues with the implementation of each layer for example there is a lot of codding used for model and data access with using ORM and presentation is not much more than pure phtml. Some frameworks use their own wrappers for existing PHP functionality and in some cases severely limiting original functionality. Depending on framework you can have additional problems like lack of documentation, slow or non existent development cycle and last but not least speed. While ago I made my own framework which while doing it's job and being used for few different applications after couple of years more of experience with PHP doesn't seem to be perfect piece of codding. I could write my own framework and use additional experience I've gathered during these years to make it better on the other hand I'm aware that there is quite many better programmers working on creating/upgrading existing frameworks. So does it make at all nay sense to write my own PHP framework if there is so many possibilities to choose from?

  Does anybody know a good web framework that includes an ORM mapper and allows straight forward implementation of web services? I'm looking for a framework written in PHP or C++. I'm looking for the following features (not all of them required, some will do nicely) data definition in one place used by database and web service WSDL generation XML output/JSON output boilerplate code generation So what I would like is a framework that let's me specify the objects, the web service functions on those objects and then generate everything that is required leaving me to fill the business logic (connecting the database to the web service). Anything like that out there? Background information for why I need this: I'm looking into creating a web project: the client is a rich web application that fetches all its data using AJAX. It will be completely custom made using only a low level javascript library. The server back end is supposed to serve static content and javascript (basically the rich web application) and to provide a RESTful web service API (which I would like to implement using aforementioned framework).

• High latency issue for web service call from amazon aws ec2 to local server

  We have a legacy web application that is running in our data center on premises located in Houston. We have a developed a new .net 4 based web application in order to provide new features to customers. The new web application is hosted in amazon aws ec2 environment (N. Virginia region us-east-1b zone). In order to get seamlessly integrate with the legacy application the new web application makes web service calls to retrieve data. We are seeing an unusually high latency time in the order of 5+ seconds for these web service calls. The exact same web service call returns in less than a second on our local PCs (which makes sense given physical proximity to the actual server). The weird part is that we have developers in California who also have the same milliseconds response time. We are testing the web service response using third party tools such as SoapUI, Google Chrome extensions such as Advanced REST Client, Postman REST Client, etc. As if this wasnt weird enough, we have noticed the same low latency from certain other ec2 instances while testing which are in the same region and availability zone as well. If we experienced the high latency consistently from all the ec2 instances I could understand. But there is something else going on. Comparing the various stats and results between the low latency and high latency ec2 servers do not show any significant differences: ping (constant 40ms), tracert, winmtr, etc. We have instances that are in the VPC as well. So I tried both the public and private IP address of the web service host server and that didnt make a difference either for the above results. We need to resolve this latency issue as this is causing the resulting web pages to load very slowly (almost 15+ seconds which is simply unacceptable). The ec2 instances have Windows Server Datacenter 64 bit. Let me know if there is any other infor I can provide to help diagnose this.

• Is Play Framework good for doing some logic parallely?

  I'm going to build a web application that's going to host urban games. A user visits my website, clicks "Start game" and starts receiving some SMS messages when gets to some location and has to answer them to get points. My question: is Play suitable for this kind of application? From what I've read I know for sure it's ok for traditional web applications: user interface for same data storage and manipulation. But what if after clicking the "start button" some logic has to go on its own course? How would I handle parallely checking geolocation of the players (I have API for that)? I guess in some threads that would ping them every ~5 sec. and do some processing but is it possible to just "disconnect" them from the main user interface? So to sum up: I want an application written in Play that starts a separate thread for a game after clicking "start game" and other users are able to view their data (statisctics etc.), while the threads work their way with the game logic. I found something like jobs but they are documented for version 1.2 (current one is 2.2). Sorry for my somewhat fuzzy explenation, I tried to do my best.

  I am currently building this small template engine. It takes a string containing the template in parameter, and a dictionary of "tags,values" to fill in the template. In the engine, I have no idea of the tags that will be in the template and the ones that won't. I am currently iterating (foreach) on the dictionnary, parsing my string that I have put in a string builder, and replacing the tags in the template by their corresponding value. Is there a more efficient/convenient way of doing this? I know the main drawback here is that the stringbuilder is parsed everytime entirely for each tag, which is quite bad... (I am also checking, though not included in the sample, after the process that my template does not contain any tag anymore.   I have about 20 years of experience with programming, most of that on the job, and right now, I define myself as a Web Developer, because I think about half my expertise lies in the all too extended "web" field, both server side and client side, and because in the last years I'm mostly doing web development. I know my javascript, jQuery, jQueryUI, HTML4-5, css2-3 and some frameworks like backbone.js and angularJS Since university I've always been interested in Man-Machine Interaction, UI and UX. Recently, I saw the label "Web UI Developer" tossed around, and I thought that would be something I would like to qualify for. And I'd really like to qualify with confidence. I didn't find any certificate or similar, and I don't think there are any. Is the only way to qualify as a Web UI Developer having a job as one? What are the skills I need to have, and the resources I can use to acquire them?

• Certificate Template Missing from "Certificate Template to Issue"

  I'm having a problem similar to that posted in this question: Missing Certificate template From certificate to issue The short version is that I've created a duplicate certificate template and I'm trying to add it to my domain CA so that I can issue certificates with it. However, when I go into the Certification Authority MMC and go to "Certificate Templates - New - Certificate Template To Issue", my template is missing (along with quite a number of other templates that are present in the domain). Unlike the previous question, however, my CA is running on Server 2008 R2 Enterprise. Our organization has a single DC and a single CA, so I'm not seeing where there could be propagation delay. Any ideas how to get my template to show so that I can issue certificates?

  We have a framework that offers A/B split testing. You have a 'champion' version of a page and you develop a 'challenger' version of it. Then you run the website and allocate some of your users the champion and some the challenger and measure their different responses. If the challenger is better than the champion at achieving your metrics then you dethrone the champion and develop a new challenger... My question is what mechanisms should I consider to allocate the versions? When we try to simply deploy the solution and all of its projects to a target device, deploying one of the projects triggers several assemblies from the desktop framework to be copied from the GAC to the device. What on earth could cause this? The assemblies from the "big" framework are ones like System.DirectoryServices, System.Design, and a bunch of others.

  Possible Duplicates: Best Programming Language for Web Development How can I choose a web development language? What language will you choose if you are going to build something big? What is the right option of programming languages and tools for building our website? What is the easiest web programing language at....? Well, I'm more of a basic web designer. I know the easy stuff pretty well. (Ya know, html, css) But I've been trying to take it to the next step and I'm contemplating about what I should learn that will help me out the most in my future web design/programming career, should it be JavaScript or maybe I should try to learn a back end programming language such as PHP. Lately, I have been hearing about a lot how JavaScript is so great and useful now, because of libraries such as jQuery and what possibility's it can bring by using Node.js and other frameworks. I've only learned the most basic of JavaScript and used some jQuery (mostly plugins) so i wouldn't know at all of what it can actually do. Would JS being so popular as it is now and useful, be a reason to stick with JavaScript and only learn it that for now? Or as a web designer, how important would it be to learn how to make a web application/website operate and functional, and know how to work with servers, etc? (Such as getting forms to work and sending data to the server and back) I've took a look at frameworks such as Code Igniter before, and looks really simple to get started with if I try to learn PHP, But I'm not sure how important it is for my career and what I would gain out of it. I'm asking because I can't decide what I should learn first. When I select it, I really want to take my time and learn the language. I don't want to spend time on learning multiple languages at the same time, so I need to pick wisely. I'm trying to turn the right direction so my career can hopefully be successful in the feature. (If money/gaining a job asked if its important, then its a yeah, it is a bit) I'm hoping I can get opinions and suggestions on this question, thanks for giving me your thoughts also.

"html5" might include all the html5 standard tags, but your tags names wouldn't have to be based on their HTML counter-parts at all if you didn't want to. The "extratags" library for example might add an extra tag, called "jsinclude" which gets replaced with something like <script type="text/javascript" src="@content"></script> Tags can be optionally be followed by an opening brace. They will automatically be closed as the closing brace. If no brace is used, they will be closed after taking on element. Variables are prefixed with the @ symbol. They may be used inside double-quoted strings. I think I'll use single-quotes to indicate "no variable substitution" like PHP does. Filter functions can be applied to variables like @variable|filter. Arguments can be passed to the filter @variable|filter:@arg1,arg2="y" Attributes can be passed to tags by including them in (), like p(class="classname"). Some questions: Which symbol should I use to prefix variables? @ (like Razor), $ (like PHP), or something else? Should the @ symbol be necessary in "for" and "if" statements? It's kind of implied that those are variables. Tags and controls (like if,for) presently have the exact same syntax. Should I do something to differentiate the two? If so, what? And will result in 680 MB of memory being taken! Now, Entity Framework has been historically known for producing less than optimal SQL, but 680 MB for 100 entities?! According to Microsoft, the problem will be addressed in the following version, there is a Connect issue open. There is even a whitepaper, Performance Considerations for Entity Framework 5, which talks about some of the changes and optimizations coming on version 5, but by reading it, I got even more concerned: “Once the cache contains a set number of entries (800), we start a timer that periodically (once-per-minute) sweeps the cache.” Say what?! The next version of Entity Framework will spawn timer threads?! When Code First came along, I thought it was a step in the right direction. Sure, it didn’t include some things that NHibernate did for quite some time – for example, different strategies for Id generation that do not rely on IDENTITY columns, which makes INSERT batching impossible, or support for enumerated types – but I thought these would come with the time. Now, enumerated types have, but so did… timer threads! I’m afraid Entity Framework is becoming a monster.

  Is there an easy way to map a directory in the web.xml or other deployment descriptor (jetty.xml, etc) files? For example, if I have a directory /opt/files/ is there a way that I can access its files and sub-directories by visiting http://localhost/some-mapping/? It strikes me that there should be some simple way of doing this, but I haven't been able to find out how (via google, stackoverflow, etc). All I've found are servlets that mimic fileservers, which is not what I would like. For reference I am using jetty on an AIX box.

Entity Framework Entity Framework 5 Performance Improvements and Performance Considerations for EF5:  Good articles that describes some of the big performance wins coming with EF5 (which will ship with both .NET 4.5 and ASP.NET MVC 4). Automatic compilation of LINQ queries will yield some significant performance wins (up to 600% faster). ASP.NET MVC 4 and EF Database Migrations: Good post by David Hayden that covers the new database migrations support within EF 4.3 which allows you to easily update your database schema during development - without losing any of the data within it. • Entity Framework and distributed Systems

  I need some help or maybe only a hint for the right direction. I've got a system that is sperated into two applications. An existing VB.NET desktop client using Entity Framework 5 with code first approach and a asp.net Web Api client in C# that will be refactored right yet. It should be possible to deliver OData. The system and the datamodel is still involving and so migrations will happen in undefined intervalls. So I'm now struggling how to manage my database access on the web api system. So my favourd approch would be us Entity Framework on both systems but I'm running into trouble while creating new migrations. Two solutions I've thought about: Shared Data Access dll The first idea was to separate the data access layer to a seperate project an reference from each of the systems. The context would be the same as long as the dll is up to date in each system. This way both soulutions would be able to make a migration. The main problem ist that it is much more complicate to update a web api system than it is with the client Click Once Update Solution and not every migration is important for the web api. This would couse more update trouble and out of sync libraries Database First on Web Api The second idea was just to use the database first approch an on web api side. But it seems that all annotations will be lost by each model update. Other solutions with stored procedures have been discarded because of missing OData support and maintainability. Does anyone run into same conflicts or has any advices how such a problem can be solved!

• How can I track down "Template process failed: undef error" in Perl's Template Toolkit?

  I've moved a Perl CGI app from one web host to another. Everything's running fine except for Template Tookit which is giving the following error: "Template process failed: undef error - This shouldn't happen at /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.8/CGI/Carp.pm line 314." The templates are working fine on the other web host. I've set the DEBUG_ALL flag when creating the template object, but it doesn't provide any additional info about errors just loads of debug output. I can't post the template source as there's lots of client specific stuff in it. I've written a simple test template and that works okay. Just wondering if anyone had seen this error before or has any ideas on the quickest way to find a fix for it. • Go for Zend framework or Django for a modular web application?

  I am using both Zend framework and Django, and they both have they strengths and weakness, but they are both good framworks in their own way. I do want to create a highly modular web application, like this example: modules: Admin cms articles sections ... ... ... I also want all modules to be self contained with all confid and template files. I have been looking into a way to solve this is zend the last days, but adding one omer level to the module setup doesn't feel right. I am sure this could be done, but should I? I have also included Doctrine to my zend application that could give me even more problems in my module setup! When we are talking about Django this is easy to implement (Easy as in concept, not in implementation time or whatever) and a great way to create web apps. But one of the downsides of Django is the web hosing part. There are some web hosts offering Django support, but not that many.. So then I guess the question is what have the most value; rapid modular development versus hosting options! Well, comments are welcome! Thanks
