  • Need help writing a recurring task scheduler.

    - by Sisiutl
I need to write a tool that will run a recurring task on a user configurable schedule. I'll write it in C# 3.5 and it will run on XP, Windows 7, or Windows Server 2008. The tasks take about 20 minutes to complete. The users will probably want to set up several configurations: e.g, daily, weekly, and monthly cycles. Using Task Scheduler is not an option. The user will schedule recurrences through an interface similar to Outlook's recurring appointment dialog. Once they set up the schedule they will start it up and it should sit in the system tray and kick off its tasks at the appointed times, then send mail to indicate it has finished. What is the best way to write this so that it doesn't eat up resources, lock up the host, or otherwise misbehave?

  • Show friendly message on ASP.NET Ajax error

    - by balexandre
You all know how annoying is this: I do have a log system and the correct error is well explicit there, but I want to give a better message to the user. I keep trying several ways but I'm using Telerik components and well jQuery and I ended up using both ASP.NET Ajax methods and jQuery, so I use function pageLoad() { try { var manager = Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManager.getInstance(); manager.add_endRequest(endRequest); manager.add_beginRequest(OnBeginRequest); manager } catch (err) { alert(err); } } as well $(document).ready(function() { ... } that alert(err) is never fired even upon OnClick events what's the best approach to avoid this message errors and provide a cleaner way? all this happens in <asp:UpdatePanel> as I use that when I didn't know better (3 years ago!) and I really don't want to mess up and build all again from scratch :( Any help is greatly appreciated Updated with more error windows after volpav solution

  • SQL one table aggrigation

    - by Lostdrifter
Ok, for the last few days I have been attempting to find a method to pull a very important set of information form a table that contains what I call daily counts. I have a table that is setup as follows. person|company|prod1|prod2|prod3|gen_date Each company has more then one person, and each person can have different combination of products that they have purchased. What I have been trying to figure out is a SQL statement that will list the number of people that have bought a particular product per company. So an output similar to this: Comp ABC | 13 Prod1 | 3 Prod2 | 5 Prod 3 Comp DEF | 2 Prod1 | 15 Prod2 | 0 Prod 3 Comp HIJ | 0 Prod1 | 0 Prod2 | 7 Prod 3 Currently if a person did not select a product the value being stored is NULL. Best I have right now is 3 different statements that can produce this information if run on there own. SELECT Count(person) as puchases, company FROM Sales WHERE prod1 = '1' and gendate = '3/24/2010' Group BY company

  • Zend Framework: isValid() clears values from disabled form fields!

    - by Andrew
When you submit a form, disabled form fields are not submitted in the request. So if your form has a disabled form field, it makes working with Zend_Form::isValid() a little frustrating. $form->populate($originalData); $form->my_text_field->disabled = 'disabled'; if (!$form->isValid($_POST)) { //form is not valid //since my_text_field is disabled, it doesn't get submitted in the request //isValid() will clear the disabled field value, so now we have to re-populate the field $form->my_text_field->value($originalData['my_text_field']); $this->view->form = $form; return; } // if the form is valid, and we call $form->getValues() to save the data, our disabled field value has been cleared! Without having to re-populate the form, and create duplicate lines of code, what is the best way to approach this problem?

  • Finding the centroid of a polygon?

    - by user146780
I have tried: for each vertex, add to total, divide by number of verities to get center. I'v also tried: Find the topmost, bottommost - get midpoint... find leftmost, rightmost, find midpoint. Both of these did not return the perfect center because I'm relying on the center to scale a polygon. I want to scale my polygons so I may put a border around them. What is the best way to find the centroid of a polygon given that the polygon may be concave, convex and have many many sides of various lengths. Thanks

  • How to suppress error messages in rpy2

    - by Björn
Hello! The following code does not work. It seems that the R warning message raises a python error. # enable use of python objects in rpy2 import rpy2.robjects.numpy2ri import numpy as np from rpy2.robjects import r # create an example array a = np.array([[5,2,5],[3,7,8]]) # this line leads to a warning message, which in turn raises an # error message if run within a script. result = r['chisq.test'](a) Running that code example in ipython works, however, running it inside a script raises the errorTypeError: 'module' object is unsubscriptable. I assume this is due to the warning message. What is the best way to avoid this problem? Thanks in advance!

  • How do Java mocking frameworks work?

    - by Amir Rachum
This is NOT a question about which is the best framework, etc. I have never used a mocking framework and I'm a bit puzzled by the idea. How does it know how to create the mock object? Is it done in runtime or generates a file? How do you know its behavior? And most importantly - what is the work flow of using such a framework (what is the step-by-step for creating a test). Can anyone explain? You can choose whichever framework you like for example, just say what it is.

  • How can I restore the order of an (incomplete) select list to its original order?

    - by Rob
I have two Select lists, between which you can move selected options. You can also move options up and down in the right list. When I move options back over to the left list, I would like them to retain their original position in the list order, even if the list is missing some original options. This is solely for the purpose of making the list more convenient for the user. I am currently defining an array with the original Select list onload. What would be the best way to implement this?

  • Filtering results and pagination

    - by alj
I have a template that shows a filter form and below it a list of the result records. I bind the form to the request so that the filter form sets itself to the options the user submitted when the results are returned. I also use pagination. Using the code in the pagination documentation means that when the user clicks for the next page, the form data is lost. What is the best way of dealing with pagination and filtering in this way? Passing the querystring to the paginiation links. Change the pagination links to form buttons and therefore submit the filter form at the same time, but this assumes that the user hasn't messed about with the filter options. As above but with the original data as hidden fields. ALJ

  • How can I require an attribute on a class definition?

    - by spoulson
Is there a way to enforce a compile requirement for certain attributes on a class or interface implementation? For example, let's say my application uses a series of static classes that contain const int resource values. I'd like to decorate the class in a Description attribute to describe its contents. In concept, I'd like to apply this attribute requirement to an interface, then each static class would implement it with its required Description. I could write a run-time check or a unit test to check compliance. But really a compile-time check would be best. Is there such a thing?

    Hi, I need a relative path in this function: $(function() { $("#searchbox").autocomplete({ minLength : 2, source : function (request, response){ $.ajax({ url : "http://linux/project/index.php/main/search/", dataType : "json", data : { key : request.term}, type : "POST", success : function(data){ response($.map(data, function(item) { return { label: item.original_name, value: item.original_name, id : item.project_id+"/"+item.folder_id+"/"+item.id } })) } }) }, select : function(event, ui) { document.location.href = "http://linux/project/index.php/projects/loaddocument/"+ui.item.id; } }); }); How can I use a PHP Variable path to replace http://linux/project in the function above? Best regards ...

I have a two column view Product Id Tag ---------------------- 1 Leather 1 Watch 2 Red 2 Necklace 2 Pearl I'm trying to get all possible combinations of tags for a product as such: 1 Leather 1 Leather,Watch 2 Pearl 2 Pearl,Necklace 2 Pearl Necklace,Red 2 Necklace 2 Necklace, Red 2 Red I've found and stolen some SQL that give me the complete list for all but not the small versions, its below. Any ideas, it's started to make my head hurt. A virtual pint for the best answer. • Selecting items from events, as evenly spaced as possible

    - by Matt Warren
If I have an event that happens 15 times a second (numbered 1 - 15), but I only want to process it 3 times I can choose [1], [6] and [11],. It's important that the events I process are as evenly spaced as possible and take into account wrap-around, i.e. the events are continuous 13, 14, 15, 1, 2, 3 etc. If I want 4 items the best I can do is [1], [5], [9] & [13]. Is there a general algorithm that will calculate which events I need to process given the total number of events (total) and the number to process (processAmount).

  • Designing a Chart that expands as more data is entered in Excel

    - by Matt Ridge
I have a worksheet that pulls data from another, it is designed to only show late jobs, and it works perfectly. I have it where it is broken down into quarters, and it gathers all this data and does everything I want. Except this one last bit... I want to have it where it shows charts, if there is data in said area the chart would self populate, otherwise it would be blank. If more data is entered into the range expand the chart accordingly. Attached is a simplified workbook with what it does, and what I'd like to see it do. I don't even know if this is possible... I thought if I wrote a script to make it so that the data changes with each addition it may fix my problem, but I'm not sure if that is the best way in this situation. https://dl.dropbox.com/u/3327208/Excel/Charts.xlsx

  • Fastest implementation of the frac function in C#

    - by user349937
I would like to implement a frac function in C# (just like the one in hsl here http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb509603%28VS.85%29.aspx) but since it is for a very processor intensive application i would like the best version possible. I was using something like public float Frac(float value) { return value - (float)Math.Truncate(value); } but I'm having precision problems, for example for 2.6f it's returning in the unit test Expected: 0.600000024f But was: 0.599999905f I know that I can convert to decimal the value and then at the end convert to float to obtain the correct result something like this: public float Frac(float value) { return (float)((decimal)value - Decimal.Truncate((decimal)value)); } But I wonder if there is a better way without resorting to decimals...

  • Process for beginning a Ruby on Rails project

    - by Daniel Beardsley
I'm about to begin a Ruby on Rails project and I'd love to hear how others go through the process of starting an application design. I have quite a bit of experience with RoR, but don't have that many starting from scratch with only a vision experiences and would appreciate the wisdom of others who've been there. I'm looking for an order of events, reasons for the order, and maybe why each part is important. I can think of a few starting points, but I'm not sure where it's best to begin Model design and relationships (entities, how they relate, and their attributes) Think of user use-cases (or story-boards) and implement the minimum to get these done Create Model unit-tests then create the necessary migrations and AR models to get the tests to pass Hack out the most basic version of the simplest part of your application and go from there Start with a template for a rails app (like http://github.com/thoughtbot/suspenders) Do the boring gruntwork first (User auth, session management, ...) ...

  • How can I most accurately calculate the execution time of an ASP.NET page while also displaying it o

    - by henningst
I want to calculate the execution time of my ASP.NET pages and display it on the page. Currently I'm calculating the execution time using a System.Diagnostics.Stopwatch and then store the value in a log database. The stopwatch is started in OnInit and stopped in OnPreRenderComplete. This seems to be working quite fine, and it's giving a similar execution time as the one shown in the page trace. The problem now is that I'm not able to display the execution time on the page because the stopwatch is stopped too late in the life cycle. What is the best way to do this?

  • Check if a SQL table exists.

    - by Carra
What's the best way to check if a table exists in a Sql database in a database independant way? I came up with: bool exists; const string sqlStatement = @"SELECT COUNT(*) FROM my_table"; try { using (OdbcCommand cmd = new OdbcCommand(sqlStatement, myOdbcConnection)) { cmd.ExecuteScalar(); exists = true; } } catch (Exception ex) { exists = false; } Is there a better way to do this? This method will not work when the connection to the database fails. I've found ways for Sybase, SQL server, Oracle but nothing that works for all databases.

  • Timeout in LINQ to SQL inserting millions of records

    - by Bas
I'm inserting approximently 3 million records in a database using this solution. Eventually when the application has been inserting records for a while (my last run lasted around 4 hours), it gives a timeout with the following SqlException: "SqlExcepetion: Timeout expired. The timeoutperiod elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding." What's the best way to handle this exception? Is there a way to prevent this from happening or should I catch the exception? Thanks in advance!

  • How do I implement SAML 2.0 in a WCF Client?

    - by Tone
I need to implement SAML 2.0 for a WCF client that is talking to a java web service (Glassfish). I know very little about SAML, and after a bit of searching here (and elsewhere) I do not find much about how to implement with WCF. Since WCF abstracts you away from the SOAP layer how can I add SAML assertions to the SOAP header? Will a 3rd party tool like ComponentSpace work best? Or should I roll my own? Other advice?

Index of the array is the category_id like:: [8846] => Array ( [category_id] => 8846 [title] => Tsting two [description] => Tsting two [subtype] => categories [type] => object [level] => 2 [parent_category] => 8841 [tags] => new [name] => Tsting two ) each value has its parent_category value, I have around 500 elements in the array, what is the best way to make it. Process i followed: krsort categories array, so that all the child categories are at the beginning, then function makeHierarchical() { foreach($this->categories as $guid => $category) { if($category['level'] != 1) $this->multilevel_categories[$category['parent_category']][$guid] = $category; } } but this is not working, it does it only for first level. • which toString() method can be used performance wise??

    - by Mrityunjay
hi, I am working on one project for performance enhancement. I had one doubt, while we are during a process, we tend to trace the current state of the DTO and entity used. So, for this we have included toString() method in all POJOs for the same. I have now implemented toString() in three different ways which are following :- public String toString() { return "POJO :" + this.class.getName() + " RollNo :" + this.rollNo + " Name :" + this.name; } public String toString() { StringBuffer buff = new StringBuffer("POJO :").append(this.class.getName()).append(" RollNo :").append(this.rollNo).append(" Name :").append(this.name); return buff.toString(); } public String toString() { StringBuilder builder = new StringBuilder("POJO :").append(this.class.getName()).append(" RollNo :").append(this.rollNo).append(" Name :").append(this.name); return builder .toString(); } can anyone please help me to find out which one is best and should be used for enhancing performance.

  • How do you keep track of what the industry is up to?

    - by BlairHippo
A discussion elsewhere made me realize that I don't do a particularly good job of following the software industry. My exposure to new trends or technologies is haphazard at best, often limited to a "Hey, that sounds interesting" when I see people discussing something I'm not familiar with on SO. To abuse a metaphor, I'm quite familiar with the tree where I work, but I know too bloody little about the rest of the forest. How do other folks keep abreast of what's going on in the software industry? Are there any sites/blogs/podcasts/whatever that you find particularly valuable for keeping you informed of potentially useful new technologies or industry-wide trends? (My apologies in advance if this is a duplicate; this feels like something that ought to have been asked before, but alas, my search-fu has failed me.)

  • Fastest way to check a List<T> for a date

    - by fishhead
    I have a list of dates that a machine has worked on, but it doesn't include a date that machine was down. I need to create a list of days worked and not worked. I am not sure of the best way to do this. I have started by incrementing through all the days of a range and checking to see if the date is in the list by iterating through the entire list each time. I am looking for a more efficient means of finding the dates. class machineday { datetime WorkingDay; } class machinedaycollection : List<machineday> { }
