    Thinking that the answer to this is pretty obvious but here it goes: When I am working on a small project for school (in java) I "compile" it. On my coop we are using ant to "build" our project. I think that compiling is a subset of building. Is this correct? What is the difference between building and compiling?

    Hi all, I'm trying to setup a parallel CMake-based build for my source tree, but when I issue $ cmake . $ make -j2 I get a jobserver unavailable: using -j1. Add '+' to parent make rule warning. Does anyone have an idea if it is possible to fix it somehow?

  • makefile from Linux doesn't work in OpenSolaris

    In OpenSolaris OS, when I run makefile generated by Eclipse CDT on the Linux OS, I get an error on the first -include line. The same error was in FreeBSD, and was solved by executing gmake instead of make. In OpenSolaris (just installed) gmake doesn't work (command not found). What package should I install and how exactly, to build Linux-generated C++ project in OpenSolaris?

  • How to cleanup old Failed Builds in TeamCity?

    We do have hundreds of failed builds in TeamCity (number is especially high because of old retry on fail settings) and now it's a pain to browse history. I want to clean up only old failed builds, is there anyway to do that in TeamCity? Normal clean-up policy only allows X days before the last successful build sort of clean ups.

  • Creating and Compiling a C++ project on Windows

    I need to work on C++ project on my windows machine. My project will consist of various classes(.h and .cpp) as well as the startup file to start the application. The preliminary design is simple but the application has the potential to gain complexity as time goes by. What I need here is ideas to set up the C++ project compiler/IDE/Makefile etc..etc. as well as some standard tools besides Visual C++ to compile/build/link projects such as these on a Windows OS.   • Uses of a C++ Arithmetic Promotion Header

    I've been playing around with a set of templates for determining the correct promotion type given two primitive types in C++. The idea is that if you define a custom numeric template, you could use these to determine the return type of, say, the operator+ function based on the class passed to the templates. I'm working on the assumption that just having the promotion templates alone would be insufficient for practical adoption. Incidentally, Boost has something similar in its math/tools/promotion header, but it's really more for getting values ready to be passed to the standard C math functions (that expect either 2 ints or 2 doubles) and bypasses all of the integral types. Is something that simple preferable to having complete control over how your objects are being converted? TL;DR: What sorts of helper templates would you expect to find in an arithmetic promotion header beyond the machinery that does the promotion itself?

  • Middleware with generic communication media layer

    Greetings all, I'm trying to implement middleware (driver) for an embedded device with generic communication media layer. Not sure what is the best way to do it so I'm seeking an advice from more experienced stackoverflow users:). Basically we've got devices around the country communicating with our servers (or a pda/laptop in used in field). Usual form of communication is over TCP/IP, but could be also using usb, RF dongle, IR, etc. The plan is to have object corresponding with each of these devices, handling the proprietary protocol on one side and requests/responses from other internal systems on the other. The thing is how create something generic in between the media and the handling objects. I had a play around with the TCP dispatcher using boost.asio but trying to create something generic seems like a nightmare :). Anybody tried to do something like that? What is the best way how to do it? Example: Device connects to our Linux server. New middleware instance is created (on the server) which announces itself to one of the running services (details are not important). The service is responsible for making sure that device's time is synchronized. So it asks the middleware what is the device's time, driver translates it to device language (protocol) and sends the message, device responses and driver again translates it for the service. This might seem as a bit overkill for such a simple request but imagine there are more complex requests which the driver must translate, also there are several versions of the device which use different protocol, etc. but would use the same time sync service. The goal is to abstract the devices through the drivers to be able to use the same service to communicate with them. Another example: we find out that the remote communications with the device are down. So we send somebody out with PDA, he connects to the device using USB cable. Starts up the application which has the same functionality as the timesync service. Again middleware instance is created (on the PDA) to translate communication between application and the device this time only using USB/serial media not TCP/IP as in previous example.     I am reluctant to say I can't figure this out, but I can't figure this out. I've googled and searched stackoverflow, and come up empty. The abstract, and possibly overly vague form of the question is, how can I use the traits-pattern to instantiate non-virtual member functions? The question came up while modernizing a set of multivariate function optimizers that I wrote more than 10 years ago. The optimizers all operate by selecting a straight-line path through the parameter space away from the current best point (the "update"), then finding a better point on that line (the "line search"), then testing for the "done" condition, and if not done, iterating. There are different methods for doing the update, the line-search, and conceivably for the done test, and other things. Mix and match. Different update formulae require different state-variable data. For example, the LMQN update requires a vector, and the BFGS update requires a matrix. If evaluating gradients is cheap, the line-search should do so. If not, it should use function evaluations only. Some methods require more accurate line-searches than others. Those are just some examples. The original version instatiates several of the combinations by means of virtual functions. Some traits are selected by setting mode bits. Yuck. It would be trivial to define the traits with #define's and the member functions with #ifdef's and macros. But that's so twenty years ago. It bugs me that I cannot figure out a whiz-bang modern way. If there were only one trait that varied, I could use the curiously recurring template pattern. But I see no way to extend that to arbitrary combinations of traits. I tried doing it using boost::enable_if, etc.. The specialized state info was easy. I managed to get the functions done, but only by resorting to non-friend external functions that have the this-pointer as a parameter. I never even figured out how to make the functions friends, much less member functions. Perhaps tag-dispatch is the key. I haven't gotten very deeply into that. Surely it's possible, right? If so, what is best practice?

  • Undefined symbols after installing new xcode 3.2.3 build

    I want to move to the new XCode 3.2.3 GM Seed build for development, but when I bring up my project I get 'base sdk missing' because my project is set to use iPhone SDK 3.0. If I change 'base SDK' to iPhone 3.2 or 4.0 and then compile I get a lot of errors that I don't understand. I dumped a few of them below. Can anyone tell me what I am missing? Also, can someone confirm that if I choose 'base sdk' of iPhone 3.2 or 4.0 that I can still choose 'target device' of iPhone 3.0 and not force my customers to install the new SDK. I really don't want to be the app that forces my customers to upgrade their OS. Thanks!   • How to allow Hudson build URL through Nginx auth_basic?

    Hi, I have Hudson running and made available to the world via nginx. I have protected Hudson with nginx's auth_basic and that works great. The trouble is, I want to allow unauthenticated requests to the build URL, i.e. /job/<job_name>/build. Currently I have this in my nginx conf: upstream hudson { server 127.0.0.1:8888; } server { server_name ci.myurl.com; root /var/lib/hudson; location / { proxy_pass http://hudson/; auth_basic "Super secret stuff"; auth_basic_user_file /var/opt/hudson/htpasswd; } location ~ \/build { auth_basic off; } } I can't get that second location to allow unauthenticated requests. I have tried various combinations of location ~ /job/(.*)/biuld { } location ^~ \/build { } location ~ \/job\/(.*)\/build { } etc... Maddening! Can anyone point me in the right direction?   • Problem building dotnetnuke blog module

    I have dnn 5.2 running on my machine, and installed the blog module, the blog module is also reflected in the development environment i have. But i want to find out, how do i actually develope, or build the blog from source, so i can actually output the .dll file, instead of just running it. If i import the Blog project file from the folder, it will give me a host of error like .resx file not found and so on. Does any dotnetnuke expert out there know about this?And have encountered the problem before? If not, how do you actually make the module work so u can make changes to the module. Im talking about core logic change, like adding functions, not just skin or UI changes.
