• What languages should I leaarn before I go to college? [closed]

  I've been working with PHP, MySQL, and some html for the past 3-4 years now just as a hobby.. I'm only 19 and college is going to come soon, I want to go for Web and Software development and/or Network Security and Administration, I know the networking is a whole different ballpark, but as for programming, which languages do you suggest I get under my belt before college? I was thinking the C languages (C++, C#), Java, .NET; Should I learn any more Server Side Scripting languages? Python, Perl, Ruby? I used to be somewhat familiar with writing Java, but haven't written in Java in a good while, what would you suggest? Thanks!

• HTML5, PHP, JAVA or asp?

  I am building a new website for a friend of mine. Its all plain html, and a server side include. The problem is to build static pages for 500 products would not be fun to create, or maintain. So i am forced to at least put dynamic information on these pages based off a spreadsheet, or dynamic pages all together. What i want to do is have a spreadsheet that can be used to keep track of in stock quantity, sku numbers, ecc.. that way i dont have to update hundreds of pages every night. He can just edit the spreadsheet and the pages will automatically adjust. I am a busy man, and i am not asking anyone to just give me the answer. But to save some time what is more worth learning to get this done fastest. HTML5, PHP, JAVA asp, or is there somehthing else better suited?

• Magento, NGINX, PHP-FPM, APC, MEMCACHED, 16gb Ram CentOS, Spiking PHP-FPM to 100% CPU

  I have been trying to resolve my issue of spiking cpu caused by php-fpm processes. I've reduced the php-fpm config settings to: pm = ondemand pm.max_children = 12 pm.start_servers = 2 pm.min_spare_servers = 2 pm.max_spare_servers = 10 pm.max_requests = 500 php_admin_value[memory_limit] = 128M Problem still exists. I'm running a Joomla main site (which is having no problems) and a Magento store in a sub-directory. My server is a Linux CentOS, running NGINX, APC, Memcached, Full Page Cache and php-fpm. My server has 8 cores and 16gb dedicated ram. My host has shut down my server several times the past week because my php-fpm processes are consuming the entire network. A lot of the individual php-fpm processes are getting over 50% cpu. I've hired several "professionals" and none of them was able to help me, so now broke and stumped, I'm turning to you guys for help. So any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. the server is not using much memory: Mem: 16777216k total, 1204040k used, 15573176k free My.conf settings: query_cache_size = 128M innodb_buffer_pool_size = 512M open-files-limit = 8192 table_cache=4096 I just noticed that someone changed my innodb_buffer_pool_size to 512M. Shouldn't this be set to 80% of available ram? So I have 16gb ram so it should be set at 12G; however, I set it at 10G. What do you think? I made that change and restart everything. Php-fpm is still spiking cpu. • SonicPoint AP Clients Not Able To Connect With DHCP

  This is my first time setting up anything like this so please be gentle. I'm a web developer who fell into setting up a few SonicWall NSA 4200's... I've tried doing as much research on this through Google and ServerFault but haven't been able to hunt down an answer as to what I'm doing wrong. We've got two virtual access points set up here, one that is intended for employees (tied to X2) and the other for guests (tied to X2:V1). We are not using the DHCP server on the NSA 4200, but one already on the network. When a client connects to the employee SSID they are able to obtain a IP from the network's DHCP server. However when attempting to connect to the guest SSID the client does a search for a DHCP server but can't find one. Any clues, resources, answers would be appreciated.

• Cisco VPN Client connects but unable to ping or RDP

  I'm a developer and don't have much networking expertise, so bare with me. I'm using the Cisco VPN Client 5.0.02.0090 to connect to my work's VPN that way I can RDP into my work computer. Once connected, I can't ping anything on the local network once connected to the VPN thus I am unable to access my work's network. This used to work about two weeks ago but abruptly stopped working today. However, I have the Cisco VPN Client installed on my laptop and I am able to ping and RDP into my work computer from there. Both my desktop and laptop computers are connected to the same router at home. I have tried the following so far: Rebooted my computer Reinstalled VPN client Updated NIC drivers Disabled firewall Opened up ports 500, 4500, and 10000 Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

So far I've only seen Roboform's ability to fill out fields in web browsers and Windows GUI apps. I'm an app developer and sometimes I need to use Telnet/SSH. My SSH client of choice is PuTTY, but I can't find any way to integrate Roboform with PuTTY. Is this possible? If not, is there another [free] SSH client that will work with Roboform?

  I just upgraded Ubuntu from 11.10 to 12.04. My rails app now returns the (passenger) error "Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (111) (Mysql2::Error)". I get a similar error when I try to access mysql at the command line on my Ubuntu server using mysql -u root -p. I have mysql-server 5.5 installed. I've checked and mysql is not running. When I try to restart it, it fails. Dean Richardson Update: Thanks to quanta's suggestion, I looked at the /var/log/mysql/error.log file. I found error messages relating to pointers, fatal signals, and more stuff that I really couldn't make much sense of. I also found mysql man page references, however. One suggested that I try starting mysqld with the --innodb_force_recovery=# option, then attempt to dump (or drop) the offending/corrupted database or table. I worked through the escalating option levels one-by-one (innodb_force_recovery=1, innodb_force_recovery=2, etc.) This allowed me to successfully run mysql -u root -p from the command line and execute several commands. I was able to run queries on my production database, but any attempt to query, dump, or even drop my development database raised an error and led to me losing the connection to mysql. So I've made progress, but until I'm somehow able to drop or repair my development db I'm still unable to get my app to load. Any further advice or suggestions? Thanks! • How is this word document encoded?

  Hi all, We have a program that was written for us by a developer that we can no longer contact, the program opens word documents (forms) that we use in our company, you can tell they are Word documents as the 'Word' toolbar displays with this custom program and we can see the .doc files on the hard drive, the Save button is disabled in the program and when we open the .doc files in word the encoding is not standard as the forms are unreadable but look perfect in the custom program. • Cisco VPN Connection - No internet no nothing

  Hi all, Sorry if this has been posted, I tried searching but I am not exactly sure what I am looking for, I am a developer not a networking guy. We have a client whom we need to use Cisco VPN client to connect to their servers. I have installed the software, dropped in the provided .pcf file, and I can connect. However, when I do, I lose all local and internet capabilities, no hosts resolve, and I still can't connect to their internal FTP and development sites. This leads me to believe either a setting is wrong in my Cisco software, and/or their network is not correctly configured. Does anyone know anything about Cisco VPN'ing that can give me a hand? My colleague seems to indicate that they need to enable split tunneling on their end (or a similar setting).

• ColdFusion 9 64bit / MAMP Pro 1.9 64Bit on OSX

  I followed this thread and it's associated links. But there is nothing i can do to get CF9 to work. MAMP Pro now has the 64bit version of apache 2.2. Whenever i start apache i get an error saying it couldn't start and to check the logs. i check the logs and this is what i see. 6/1/10 12:39:12 PM [0x0-0x8d78d7].de.appsolute.mamppro[52702] Cannot load /Applications/ColdFusion9/runtime/lib/wsconfig/1/mod_jrun22.so into server: cannot create object file image or add library I've tried copying the mod_jrun22.so file form the installer, wsconfig.jar and from another developer running standalone apache. all fail. any ideas????

I'm still pretty green with all the sendmail and procmail stuff as I'm primarily a developer.

I've been directed to take a look at Solarwinds, which is an excellent network monitoring solution, for an internal project. Basically we want to write our own panel to display information custom to our network infrastructure. Has anyone done anything like this, or know if there is a plugin SDK giving developer access? • Windows server 2008 issue

  We have 2 domains “pdc1” and “devkc” both are windows 2000 Active Directory domains with a 2-way trust relationship in place., has been this way for years. All of our developer machines are joined to the “devkc” domain but the users log into there accounts on the “pdc1” domain. This all works fine with Windows XP, 2000 and 2003 server. However with Windows Server 2008 the users can only log into the “devkc” domain that the machine is joined to, they can not log into the “pdc1” domain. The following error results: "The security database on this server does not have a computer account for this workstation trust relationship” Any ideas would be greatly appreaciated Thanks Matt Fitz

• Installing PHP extensions on Linux

  Please bear with me; I'm a developer, not a server admin. My company wants to explore using Magento. They've handed me a pre-configured Linux server with apache and PHP installed, but when I try to run the Magento setup, it tells me that there are PHP extensions that need to be loaded. I can edit the php.ini file, but have no idea where to get the extensions or how to install them, and there's no one here who knows, either. Can anyone give me a hand? I need the PDO_MySQL, mcrypt, and GD extensions. I've searched and found sites that talk about downloading from the terminal and compiling code, but it's all way over my head. Is there an easy way to do this?

• What proportion of DBA skills are platform-independent?

  Problem: we've grown to the point where we need a real DBA. Real DBAs are hard to find. Possible solution: I know someone with extensive experience (currently working on MSSQL) who is looking for a new DBA job. He might be willing to consider working for a MySQL shop (I haven't asked). Snag: I don't know to what extent MSSQL DBA skills map to MySQL DBA skills. I'm a developer, so I know enough about MySQL to develop apps which use it (including the basic performance-tuning, index selection, etc.), do schema design, and perform simple utility tasks (backup with mysqldump, scripting, etc.). I don't know anything about MSSQL. Nor do I actually know much about the boundaries of the DBA role. Can anyone with more experience - perhaps as a DBA - weigh in on this? Are there enough similarities between MSSQL and MySQL that it's worth asking a MSSQL DBA if he'd be interested in applying for a MySQL position?

• Unable to access local network when Cisco VPN client is connected

  I'm a developer and don't have much networking expertise, so bear with me. I'm using the Cisco VPN Client 5.0.02.0090 to connect to my work's VPN that way I can RDP into my work computer. Once connected, I can't ping anything on the local network once connected to the VPN thus I am unable to access my work's network. This used to work about two weeks ago but abruptly stopped working today. However, I have the Cisco VPN Client installed on my laptop and I am able to ping and RDP into my work computer from there. Both my desktop and laptop computers are connected to the same router at home. I have tried the following so far: Rebooted my computer Reinstalled VPN client Updated NIC drivers Disabled firewall Opened up ports 500, 4500, and 10000 Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

• iPhone apps causing battery to drain out

  Hi, Recently my iPhone battery started to discharge in just one day. I do not use my iPhone much (less than 1 hour a day). and then while discussing it with couple of colleagues, I heard that there are some apps which even if installed on your iPhone can cause your battery to drain out faster. It does not matter if you are not using those apps, only having them installed was enough to cause battery drain. I have heard this from couple of my techie friends as well and thus had to put some credibility to it. Being an iPhone developer, I don't think that is possible. Do you think if this is possible for an app to cause battery drain just by being installed there on iPhone?

• Edirol UA-25 driver on Windows 8 Preview

  I've installed Windows 8 developer preview on a laptop and everything is working apart from my external sound card. The sound card in question is this one, and I've tried downloading and installing the Window 7 drivers from here but no joy so far. As per the instructions I remove the USB cable from the port. I then run setup.exe and (which I have set to run in Windows 7 compatibility mode). It starts doing it's stuff then says "Please insert the USB cable and wait"......that's where things stop! Nothing happens. I don't even here the "ding-dong" of the USB device being recoginised. Obviously I realise that the drivers are for windows 7 and not 8, but was hoping that someone would be able to crowbar it to work!!! Any tips appreciated. Thanks
