• Who to access a UIButton using tag and button change image?

- by ste
I need to change the images on a matrix of UIButtons, and the only thing I know of to address the buttons, is the tag. But I can not find a way to actually us this identifier. The buttons are created programmatically during viewDidLoad. Here is the code for creating the buttons: #define N_ROWS 4 #define N_COLS 3 int N_IMG = 0; for (int a = 0; a < N_COLS; a++) { for (int j = 0; j < N_ROWS; j++) { UIButton *aButton = [UIButton buttonWithType:UIButtonTypeCustom]; aButton.frame = CGRectMake(a * 65.0 + 25, j * 65.0 + 15, 10.0, 10.0); aButton.tag = j + a * N_ROWS + 1; [aButton setBackgroundColor:[UIColor redColor]]; N_IMG = N_IMG++; [self.view addSubview:aButton]; number_sorted = 1; } } Here is the code for setting the image: - (IBAction)set_image:(id)sender { #define N_ROWS 4 #define N_COLS 3 int N_IMG = 0; for (int a = 0; a < N_COLS; a++) { for (int j = 0; j < N_ROWS; j++) { uibutton aButton.tag == (j + a * N_ROWS + 1) setImage:[UIImage imageNamed:[puzzles objectAtIndex:N_IMG]] forState:UIControlStateNormal]; N_IMG = N_IMG++; } } } This is the code where the truble starts: uibutton aButton.tag == (j + a * N_ROWS + 1) Who can I set this up to work?

• Why are compilers so stupid?

- by martinus
I always wonder why compilers can't figure out simple things that are obvious to the human eye. They do lots of simple optimizations, but never something even a little bit complex. For example, this code takes about 6 seconds on my computer to print the value zero (using java 1.6): int x = 0; for (int i = 0; i < 100 * 1000 * 1000 * 1000; ++i) { x += x + x + x + x + x; } System.out.println(x); It is totally obvious that x is never changed so no matter how often you add 0 to itself it stays zero. So the compiler could in theory replace this with System.out.println(0). Or even better, this takes 23 seconds: public int slow() { String s = "x"; for (int i = 0; i < 100000; ++i) { s += "x"; } return 10; } First the compiler could notice that I am actually creating a string s of 100000 "x" so it could automatically use s StringBuilder instead, or even better directly replace it with the resulting string as it is always the same. Second, It does not recognize that I do not actually use the string at all, so the whole loop could be discarded! Why, after so much manpower is going into fast compilers, are they still so relatively dumb? EDIT: Of course these are stupid examples that should never be used anywhere. But whenever I have to rewrite a beautiful and very readable code into something unreadable so that the compiler is happy and produces fast code, I wonder why compilers or some other automated tool can't do this work for me.

• How to insert zeros between bits in a bitmap?

- by anatolyg
I have some performance-heavy code that performs bit manipulations. It can be reduced to the following well-defined problem: Given a 13-bit bitmap, construct a 26-bit bitmap that contains the original bits spaced at even positions. To illustrate: 0000000000000000000abcdefghijklm (input, 32 bits) 0000000a0b0c0d0e0f0g0h0i0j0k0l0m (output, 32 bits) I currently have it implemented in the following way in C: if (input & (1 << 12)) output |= 1 << 24; if (input & (1 << 11)) output |= 1 << 22; if (input & (1 << 10)) output |= 1 << 20; ... My compiler (MS Visual Studio) turned this into the following: test eax,1000h jne 0064F5EC or edx,1000000h ... (repeated 13 times with minor differences in constants) I wonder whether i can make it any faster. I would like to have my code written in C, but switching to assembly language is possible. Can i use some MMX/SSE instructions to process all bits at once? Maybe i can use multiplication? (multiply by 0x11111111 or some other magical constant) Would it be better to use condition-set instruction (SETcc) instead of conditional-jump instruction? If yes, how can i make the compiler produce such code for me? Any other idea how to make it faster? Any idea how to do the inverse bitmap transformation (i have to implement it too, bit it's less critical)?

• How to change the date/time in Python for all modules?

- by Felix Schwarz
When I write with business logic, my code often depends on the current time. For example the algorithm which looks at each unfinished order and checks if an invoice should be sent (which depends on the no of days since the job was ended). In these cases creating an invoice is not triggered by an explicit user action but by a background job. Now this creates a problem for me when it comes to testing: I can test invoice creation itself easily However it is hard to create an order in a test and check that the background job identifies the correct orders at the correct time. So far I found two solutions: In the test setup, calculate the job dates relative to the current date. Downside: The code becomes quite complicated as there are no explicit dates written anymore. Sometimes the business logic is pretty complex for edge cases so it becomes hard to debug due to all these relative dates. I have my own date/time accessor functions which I use throughout my code. In the test I just set a current date and all modules get this date. So I can simulate an order creation in February and check that the invoice is created in April easily. Downside: 3rd party modules do not use this mechanism so it's really hard to integrate+test these. The second approach was way more successful to me after all. Therefore I'm looking for a way to set the time Python's datetime+time modules return. Setting the date is usually enough, I don't need to set the current hour or second (even though this would be nice). Is there such a utility? Is there an (internal) Python API that I can use?

• css Checkbox Label Selector

- by HW90
I'm developing a MVC3 application and need to select the checkboxes label. In ASP MVC3 you have helper methods which creat a part of the code. So the code for a checkbox looks like this: leicht (4) Now I've thought I can use following code to select the label: input[type=checkbox] + label { background: url("../../Images/Controls/Checkbox.png") no-repeat scroll left center transparent; clear: none; cursor: pointer; margin: 0; padding: 5px 0 4px 24px; } But it does not work. It looks like label and input have to be next to each other. Does any ony have a solution how to solve this problem?

• Different behaviour of method overloading in C#

- by Wondering
Hi All, I was going through C# Brainteasers(http://www.yoda.arachsys.com/csharp/teasers.html) and came accross one question:what should be the o/p of below code class Base { public virtual void Foo(int x) { Console.WriteLine ("Base.Foo(int)"); } } class Derived : Base { public override void Foo(int x) { Console.WriteLine ("Derived.Foo(int)"); } public void Foo(object o) { Console.WriteLine ("Derived.Foo(object)"); } } class Test { static void Main() { Derived d = new Derived(); int i = 10; d.Foo(i); // it prints ("Derived.Foo(object)" } } but if I change the code to enter code here class Derived { public void Foo(int x) { Console.WriteLine("Derived.Foo(int)"); } public void Foo(object o) { Console.WriteLine("Derived.Foo(object)"); } } class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { Derived d = new Derived(); int i = 10; d.Foo(i); // prints Derived.Foo(int)"); Console.ReadKey(); } } I want to why the o/p is getting changde when we are inheriting vs not inheriting , why method overloading is behaving differently in both the cases

• Utility of List<T>.Sort() versus List<T>.OrderBy() for a member of a custom container class

- by ccomet
I've found myself running back through some old 3.5 framework legacy code, and found some points where there are a whole bunch of lists and dictionaries that must be updated in a synchronized fashion. I've determined that I can make this process infinitely easier to both utilize and understand by converging these into custom container classes of new custom classes. There are some points, however, where I came to concerns with organizing the contents of these new container classes by a specific inner property. For example, sorting by the ID number property of one class. As the container classes are primarily based around a generic List object, my first instinct was to write the inner classes with IComparable, and write the CompareTo method that compares the properties. This way, I can just call items.Sort() when I want to invoke the sorting. However, I've been thinking instead about using items = items.OrderBy(Func) instead. This way it is more flexible if I need to sort by any other property. Readability is better as well, since the property used for sorting will be listed in-line with the sort call rather than having to look up the IComparable code. The overall implementation feels cleaner as a result. I don't care for premature or micro optimization, but I like consistency. I find it best to stick with one kind of implementation for as many cases as it is appropriate, and use different implementations where it is necessary. Is it worth it to convert my code to use the LINQ OrderBy instead of using List.Sort? Is it a better practice to stick with the IComparable implementation for these custom containers? Are there any significant mechanical advantages offered by either path that I should be weighing the decision on? Or is their end-functionality equivalent to the point that it just becomes coder's preference?

• Rotate using a transform, then change frame origin, and view expands??

- by ZaBlanc
This is quite the iPhone quandry. I am working on a library, but have narrowed down my problem to very simple code. What this code does is create a 50x50 view, applies a rotation transform of a few degrees, then shifts the frame down a few times. The result is the 50x50 view is now much larger looking. Here's the code: // a simple 50x50 view UIView *redThing = [[UIView alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectMake(50, 50, 50, 50)]; redThing.backgroundColor = [UIColor redColor]; [self.view addSubview:redThing]; // rotate a small amount (as long as it's not 90 or 180, etc.) redThing.transform = CGAffineTransformRotate(redThing.transform, 0.1234); // move the view down 2 pixels CGRect newFrame = CGRectMake(redThing.frame.origin.x, redThing.frame.origin.y + 2, redThing.frame.size.width, redThing.frame.size.height); redThing.frame = newFrame; // move the view down another 2 pixels newFrame = CGRectMake(redThing.frame.origin.x, redThing.frame.origin.y + 2, redThing.frame.size.width, redThing.frame.size.height); redThing.frame = newFrame; // move the view down another 2 pixels newFrame = CGRectMake(redThing.frame.origin.x, redThing.frame.origin.y + 2, redThing.frame.size.width, redThing.frame.size.height); redThing.frame = newFrame; // move the view down another 2 pixels newFrame = CGRectMake(redThing.frame.origin.x, redThing.frame.origin.y + 2, redThing.frame.size.width, redThing.frame.size.height); redThing.frame = newFrame; So, what the heck is going on? Now, if I move the view by applying a translation transform, it works just fine. But that's not what I want to do and this should work anyway. Any ideas?

• c++-to-python swig caused memory leak! Related to Py_BuildValue and SWIG_NewPointerObj

- by usfree74
Hey gurus, I have the following Swig code that caused memory leak. PyObject* FindBestMatch(const Bar& fp) { Foo* ptr(new Foo()); float match; // call a function to fill the foo pointer return Py_BuildValue( "(fO)", match, SWIG_NewPointerObj(ptr, SWIGTYPE_p_Foo, 0 /* own */)); } I figured that ptr is not freed properly. So I did the following: PyObject* FindBestMatch(const Bar& fp) { Foo* ptr(new Foo()); float match; // call a function to fill the foo pointer *PyObject *o = SWIG_NewPointerObj(ptr, SWIGTYPE_p_Foo, 1 /* own */);* <------- 1 means pass the ownership to python PyObject *result = Py_BuildValue("(fO)", match, o); Py_XDECREF(o); return result; } But I am not very sure whether this will cause memory corruption. Here, Py_XDECREF(o) will decrease the ref count, which can free memory used by object "o". But o is part of the return value "result". Freeing "o" can cause data corrupt, I guess? I tried my change. It works fine and the caller (python code) does see the expected data. But this could be because nobody else overwrites to that memory area. So what's the right way to deal with memory management of the above code? I search the swig docs, but don't see very concrete description. Please help! Thanks, xin

• beforeClose not working in jGrowl?

- by sparkymark75
I have the following code which pulls json data from an ASP.NET page and displays these as notifications. The code will also take a note of what's been pulled through and store it in an array to prevent it being shown again in the same session. I'm now trying to implement functionality so that when the user closes a message, it's ID is recorded in a cookie to prevent it ever being shown again. To do this, I'm trying to write to the cookie when the beforeClose event fires. Everything else works fine apart from the saving to a cookie bit. Is there something wrong with my code that I'm missing? var alreadyGrowled = new Array(); var noteCookie = $.cookie("notificationsViewed"); if (noteCookie != null) { alreadyGrowled = noteCookie.split(","); } function growlCheckNew() { $.getJSON('getNotifications.aspx', function(data) { $(data).each(function(entryIndex, entry) { var newMessage = true; $(alreadyGrowled).each(function(index, msg_id) { if (entry['ID'] == msg_id) { newMessage = false; } }); if (newMessage == true) { $.jGrowl(entry['Message'], { sticky: true, header: entry['Title'], beforeClose: function(e, m) { $.cookie("notificationsViewed", entry['ID']); } }); } alreadyGrowled.push(entry['ID']); }); }); }

• How to declare JavaScript and CSS XHTML-compatible?

- by joyce
Hi! I'm wondering how to declare JavaScript code within a CDATA section so that it is compatible with XHTML. Which method is correct/recommended? Method 1: Method 2: Is the second one also suitable for inline CSS? And, is it possible/does it make sense to add some encoding declaration here like If i view source, the title attribute is populated with the caption, but if i ook in firebug it is not in the colorbox code. Any help on this would be great Ive ran out of ideas!

• Why does instanceof seem to work in a static generic function sometimes?

- by michael
Greetings. This is my first post in this site. I thought that because of type erasure, one could not expect the following code to compile, and indeed, it did not compile on an earlier version of Eclipse. My understanding was that instanceof was a run-time operator and could not know about the generic type which would be, by run-time, compiled away: public static <E extends Comparable<? super E>> void SampleForQuestion(E e) { if ( !(e instanceof String) ) System.out.println("I am not a String"); else System.out.println("I am a String"); } However, I was surprised to see that one of your threads actually included some code like this in an answer, and my latest Eclipse (Galileo on Windows with JVM 1.6 rev 20) is perfectly happy with it -- and it works, too. (I did notice that someone said it worked on Eclipse but not in another IDE/JDK in that thread, but don't remember the specifics.) Can someone explain why it works, and more importantly, because I have to guide my students, whether it should be expected to work in the future. Thank you. (I hope the code formatting comes through correctly - it looks indented correctly from my perspective and there are no tabs.)

• Join Where Rows Don't Exist or Where Criteria Matches...?

- by Greg
I'm trying to write a query to tell me which orders have valid promocodes. Promocodes are only valid between certain dates and optionally certain packages. I'm having trouble even explaining how this works (see psudo-ish code below) but basically if there are packages associated with a promocode then the order has to have one of those packages and be within a valid date range otherwise it just has to be in a valid date range. The whole "if PrmoPackage rows exist" thing is really throwing me off and I feel like I should be able to do this without a whole bunch of Unions. (I'm not even sure if that would make it easier at this point...) Anybody have any ideas for the query? if `OrderPromoCode` = `PromoCode` then if `OrderTimestamp` is between `PromoStartTimestamp` and `PromoEndTimestamp` then if `PromoCode` has packages associated with it //yes then if `PackageID` is one of the specified packages //yes code is valid //no invalid //no code is valid Order: OrderID* | OrderTimestamp | PackageID | OrderPromoCode 1 | 1/2/11 | 1 | ABC 2 | 1/3/11 | 2 | ABC 3 | 3/2/11 | 2 | DEF 4 | 4/2/11 | 3 | GHI Promo: PromoCode* | PromoStartTimestamp* | PromoEndTimestamp* ABC | 1/1/11 | 2/1/11 ABC | 3/1/11 | 4/1/11 DEF | 1/1/11 | 1/11/13 GHI | 1/1/11 | 1/11/13 PromoPackage: PromoCode* | PromoStartTimestamp* | PromoEndTimestamp* | PackageID* ABC | 1/1/11 | 2/1/11 | 1 ABC | 1/1/11 | 2/1/11 | 3 GHI | 1/1/11 | 1/11/13 | 1 Desired Result: OrderID | IsPromoCodeValid 1 | 1 2 | 0 3 | 1 4 | 0

- by RPM1984
Hi guys, I need help re-factoring this legacy LINQ-SQL code which is generating around 100 update statements. I'll keep playing around with the best solution, but would appreciate some ideas/past experience with this issue. Here's my code: List<Foo> foos; int userId = 123; using (DataClassesDataContext db = new FooDatabase()) { foos = (from f in db.FooBars where f.UserId = userId select f).ToList(); foreach (FooBar fooBar in foos) { fooBar.IsFoo = false; } db.SubmitChanges() } Essentially i want to update the IsFoo field to false for all records that have a particular UserId value. Whats happening is the .ToList() is firing off a query to get all the FooBars for a particular user, then for each Foo object, its executing an UPDATE statement updating the IsFoo property. Can the above code be re-factored to one single UPDATE statement? Ideally, the only SQL i want fired is the below: UPDATE FooBars SET IsFoo = FALSE WHERE UserId = 123 EDIT Ok so looks like it cant be done without using db.ExecuteCommand. Grr...! What i'll probably end up doing is creating another extension method for the DLINQ namespace. Still require some hardcoding (ie writing "WHERE" and "UPDATE"), but at least it hides most of the implementation details away from the actual LINQ query syntax.

• Why does the answer print out twice?

- by rEgonicS
I made a program that returns the product a*b*c where a,b,c are pythagorean triples and add up to 1000. The program does output the correct answer but does it twice. I was curious as to why this is so.After playing around with it a bit I found out that it prints out when a = 200 b = 375 c = 425. And once again when a = 375 b = 200 c = 425. *How do you put your code into a "code" block? It does it automatically for part of the code but as you can see the top portion and bottom line is left out. bool isPythagTriple(int a, int b, int c); int main() { for(int a = 1; a < 1000; a++) { for(int b = 1; b < 1000; b++) { for(int c = 1; c < 1000; c++) { if( ((a+b+c)==1000) && isPythagTriple(a,b,c) ) { cout << a*b*c << " "; break; } } } } return 0; } bool isPythagTriple(int a, int b, int c) { if( (a*a)+(b*b)-(c*c) == 0 ) return true; else return false; }

• C# XML export for Excel table using XmlDocument

- by Mark
I am trying to write the following into an XML document:
<xml> <x:ExcelWorkbook> <x:ExcelWorksheets> <x:ExcelWorksheet> other code here </x:ExcelWorksheet> </x:ExcelWorksheets> </x:ExcelWorkbook> </xml>
However, if I use the following code, it strips out the 'x:'. System.Xml.XmlDocument document = new System.Xml.XmlDocument(); System.Xml.XmlElement htmlNode = document.CreateElement("html"); htmlNode.SetAttribute("xmlns:o", "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"); htmlNode.SetAttribute("xmlns:x", "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:excel"); htmlNode.SetAttribute("xmlns", "http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40"); document.AppendChild(htmlNode); System.Xml.XmlElement headNode = document.CreateElement("head"); htmlNode.AppendChild(headNode); headNode.AppendChild( document.CreateElement("xml")).AppendChild( document.CreateElement("x:ExcelWorkbook"))).AppendChild( document.CreateElement("x:ExcelWorksheets")).AppendChild( document.CreateElement("x:ExcelWorksheet")).InnerText="other code here"; How can I stop this from happening? Thanks!

• How to increase PermGen memory for eclipselink StaticWeaveAntTask

- by rayd09
We are using Eclipselink and need to weave the code in order for lazy fetching to work property. During the weave process I'm getting the following error: weave: BUILD FAILED java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: PermGen space I have the following tasks within my ant build file: <target name="define_weave_task" description="task definition for EclipseLink static weaving"> <taskdef name="eclipse_weave" classname="org.eclipse.persistence.tools.weaving.jpa.StaticWeaveAntTask"/> </target> <target name="weave" depends="compile,define_weave_task" description="weave eclipselink code into compiled classes"> <eclipse_weave source="${path.classes}" target="${path.classes}"> <classpath refid="compile.classpath"/> </eclipse_weave> </target> It has been working great for a long time. Now that the amount of code to be woven has increased I'm getting the PermGen error. I would like to be able to up the amount of perm space. If I was doing a compile I would be able to up the perm space via a compiler argument such as <compilerarg value="-XX:MaxPermSize=256M"/> but this does not appear to be a valid argument for eclipselink weaving. How can I up the perm space for the weave?
