  • Role Center Installation for IIS Default Feature XPS-VIEWER

    While installing Dynamics Ax 2009 Roles Center and Enterprise Portal on Windows Server 2008 R2, there is a prerequisite for IIS Default components which fails to install. The error log file for IIS component installation points to an error while installing feature NET-XPS-VIEWER. This issue can be resolved by editing “ServerManagerCmdInputIIS.xml” file present in the support folder of the DAX 2009 installer. Edit the entry “<Feature Id="NET-XPS-Viewer" />” to “<Feature Id="NET-XPS-Viewer" />” and try reinstalling the installer should now continue uninterrupted. The issue is due to the feature name which is now XPS-VIEWER in windows server 2008 R2. Happy Installing!! :-)

    How many people, when their car shows signs of wear and tear, would consider upgrading the engine and keeping the shell? Even if you're cash-strapped, you'll soon work out the subtlety of the economics, the cost of sudden breakdowns, the precious time lost coping with the hassle, and the low 'book value'. You'll generally buy a new car. The same philosophy should apply to database systems. Mainstream support for SQL Server 2005 ends on April 12; many DBAS, if they haven't done so already, will be considering the migration to SQL Server 2008 R2. Hopefully, that upgrade plan will include a fresh install of the operating system on brand new hardware. SQL Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2008 R2 are designed to work together. The improved architecture, processing power, and hyper-threading capabilities of modern processors will dramatically improve the performance of many SQL Server workloads, and allow consolidation opportunities. Of course, there will be many DBAs smiling ruefully at the suggestion of such indulgence. This is nothing like the real world, this halcyon place where hardware and software budgets are limitless, development and testing resources are plentiful, and third party vendors immediately certify their applications for the latest-and-greatest platform! As with cars, or any other technology, the justification for a complete upgrade is complex. With Servers, the extra cost at time of upgrade will generally pay you back in terms of the increased performance of your business applications, reduced maintenance costs, training costs and downtime. Also, if you plan and design carefully, it's possible to offset hardware costs with reduced SQL Server licence costs. In his forthcoming SQL Server Hardware book, Glenn Berry describes a recent case where he was able to replace 4 single-socket database servers with one two-socket server, saving about $90K in hardware costs and $350K in SQL Server license costs. Of course, there are exceptions. If you do have a stable, reliable, secure SQL Server 6.5 system that still admirably meets the needs of a specific business requirement, and has no security vulnerabilities, then by all means leave it alone. Why upgrade just for the sake of it? However, as soon as a system shows sign of being unfit for purpose, or is moving out of mainstream support, the ruthless DBA will make the strongest possible case for a belts-and-braces upgrade.   • Fix for EF4 Profiler Issue Coming in next Cumulative Update

    Hey!  What do you know?  Microsoft Connect really works! I was very happy this morning to open my email and find a notice from Umachandar on the SQL Programmability Team that they have created a fix for the Odd Profiler Results with EF4 issue that I wrote about last June.  Not only did I blog about it, but I logged an item to Connect with repro steps and sample code.  And now, they have announced that they have a fix for this problem and that it will be included in the next Cumulative Update for SQL Server 2008 R2. For those of you not running 2008 R2, or who prefer to wait for full Service Packs rather than install the latest Cumulative Updates, I also wrote about a workaround for the issue, as long as you do not require the Multiple Active Result Sets feature to be enabled. It is easy with Microsoft to get the feeling that you’re just shouting in the wind, and it is nice to get validation once in a while that they really are listening.

  • IPSec Offload support in 82576GB controller for Linux

    Due to migration of servers to cloud computing, we bought several NICs that support mechanisms like SRIOV and VMDQ. Furthermore, as security risk was also a concern and we did not want to create more overhead on the processor, IPSec Offload support was essential. The model chosen was: Intel Gigabit ET2 Quad Port Svr Adptr. (With 82576GB controller): http://ark.intel.com/products/49187/intel-gigabit-et2-quad-port-server-adapter However, we were unable to configure IPSec Offload on Linux. We tried to test on another server we have, a Windows Server 2012 R2, but again without success. It seems that the driver for this controller is not available for windows server 2012 R2, and Linux. The test on windows would be only for verification purposes, we will not use this platform. Could someone confirm this lack of support for Linux?

A month after the installation and configuration was done and everything was working as it was supposed to, Microsoft released Team Foundation Server 2012 in mid August 2012. Well the company was using Borland Starteam as their source control and once starting to use TFS 2010, their developers and project managers were loving it since TFS is not just a source control tool and way much better then StarTeam.   • Pretty URL in ADF Faces of JDeveloper 11.1.2.2

    Many features planned for Oracle JDeveloper 12c find their way into current releases of Oracle JDeveloper 11g R1 and JDeveloper 11g R2. One example of such a feature is "pretty URL" - or "clean URL" as the Oracle JDeveloper 11g R2 (11.1.2.2) documentation puts it. "A.2.3.24 Clean URLs Historically, ADF Faces has used URL parameters to hold information, such as window IDs and state. However, URL parameters can prevent search engines from recognizing when URLs are actually the same, and therefore interfere with analytics. URL parameters can also interfere with bookmarking. By default, ADF Faces removes URL parameters using the HTML5 History Management API. If that API is unavailable, then session cookies are used.You can also manually configure how URL parameters are removed using the context parameter oracle.adf.view.rich.prettyURL.OPTIONS. Set the parameter to off so that no parameters are removed. Set the parameter to useHistoryApi to only use the HTML5 History Management API. If a browser does not support this API, then no parameters will be removed. Set the parameter to useCookies to use session cookies to remove parameters. If the browser does not support cookies, then no parameters will be removed." See: http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E26098_01/web.1112/e16181/ap_config.htm#ADFUI12856 So basically, what this part in the documentation says is: In JDeveloper 11g R2 (11.1.2.2), Oracle ADF Faces automatically removes its internally used dynamic parameters from the URL You can influence the setting with the prettyURL.OPTIONS context option, which however is not recommended you to do because the default behavior is able to detect if the browser client supports HTML 5 History management or not. In the latter case it the uses a session cookie and if this doesn't work, falls back to the "old" URL parameter adding. The information that is not so explicit and clearly mentioned in the documentation is that this is only for ADF Faces parameters (such as _afrLoop, Adf-Window-Id, etc.), but not the ADF controller token (_adf.ctrl-state)! Removing the ADF controller token is an enhancement request that will be implemented in Oracle JDeveloper 12c

    When you upgrade your system to SQL Server 2008 R2, you’ll know that the instance is at that version by using the standard commands like SELECT @@VERSION or EXEC xp_msver. After an upgrade, you always want to make sure that the compatibility options (which have much to do with how NULLs and other objects are treated) is at what you expect. For the most part, as long as the application can handle it, I set my compatibility levels to the latest version. For SQL Server 2008, that was “10.0” or “10”. You can do this with the ALTER DATABASE command or you can just right-click the database and select “Properties” and then “Database Options” in SQL Server Management Studio. To check the database compatibility level, I use this query: SELECT name, cmptlevel FROM sys.sysdatabases When I did that this morning I saw that the databases (all of them) were at 10.0 – not 10.5 like the Instance. That’s expected – we didn’t revise the database format up with the Instance for this particular release. Didn’t want to catch you by surprise on that. While your databases should be at the “proper” level for your situation, you can’t rely on the compatibility level to indicate the Instance level.   • Hardware reserved memory issue

    I've seen lots of folks having problem with hardware reserved memory issue in Windows 7/Server 2008 R2. I have it myself but not as huge as others have. Problem description When you install Windows 7 (or its bigger brother Windows Server 2008 R2) your memory may not be fully utilised. If you look at Task Manager > Performance Tab > Resource Monitor > Memory Tab And scroll to the bottom of the list you will see a graphical representation of your memory. Some of it may be hardware reserved. Previous Windows versions didn't have this problem. System was able to utilise all memory available. Question Is there any solution to lower/remove hardware reserved memory? Sidenote I tried installing 32 and 64 bit versions but to no avail. I also tried both Windows: 7 and Server 2008 R2. But always get the same amount reserved by HW. On previous Windows versions I had more memory available because I'm simultaneously running 2 VMs on host (so three machines all together). And my memory peaks much higher now as it did on older versions.

  • WSUS trying to download all updates again

    The server hosting WSUS had a catastrophic failure and we have had to rebuild the system drives. Luckily the DB and content store for WSUS are on a seperate drive so were unaffected. During the rebuild process we thought it was time to update the server to 2008 R2 (from 2003 R2). Have got the server running and installed the WSUS role, detached the DB form SQL Express 2008 R2 and attached the original. Carried out the wsusutil.exe movecontent command with a -skipcopy switch pointing to the original content store. All looked good until I saw the front page stating it is trying to download files for 6,436 updates at around 344,565 MB!!!!!! Oops, I thought, something not right here. The content store I have on disk is only 75GB but I am thinking that some vital step has been missed in the restoration process. Either way is there a way to make WSUS reindex its local content store or something as I am unsure that downloading 344 gigabytes is a viable way forward! EDIT: Never rains but it pours. AM now getting a CLSID: FX {8b6499ed-0241-e032-6508-da4b1c879d7e} error could not create snap in. think a reinstall of WSUS is in order.
