  • Should I use a modified singleton design pattern that only allows one reference to its instance?

    Hi, I have a class that would normally just generate factory objects, however this class should only used once throughout the program in once specifix place. What is the best design pattern to use in this instance? I throught that having a modified singleton design which only allows one reference to instance throughout the program would be the correct way to go. So only the first call to getInstance() returns the factory library. Is this a good or bad idea? Have I missed out another fundermental design pattern for solving this problem? Thanks for your help.

  • Multiple things at once (Threads?)

    All, What is a really simple way of having a program do more than one thing at once, even if the computer does not necessarily have multiple 'cores'. Can I do this by creating more than one Thread? My goal is to be able to have two computers networked (through Sockets) to respond to each-other's requests, while my program will at the same time be able to be managing a UI. I want the server to potentially handle more than one client at the same time as well. My understanding is that the communication is done with BufferedReader.readLine() and PrintWriter.println(). My problem is that I want the server to be waiting on multiple readLine() requests, and also be doing other things. How do I handle this? Many thanks, Jonathan

Firstly the menu panel shows up, than i need to switch to the other panel if a specific button is pressed on the menu (the menu is hidden but the app returns to it after running is completed). && i need to resize the frame too if it's possible. can i do this somehow?

  • How can I force the text go to the button of the panel?

    At the moment I have the following code which works fine. label = new JLabel(panelLabel,SwingConstants.CENTER); outputPanel.add(label,BorderLayout.CENTER); I get the text in the center of the panel (in terms of the left-right position as well as in terms of the top-bottom). Now I want to set the position to the bottom (and center in terms of "left-right"). I tried to use SOUTH instead of the CENTER in the first line. Compiler does not complains but during the execution i get IllegalArgumentException: HorizontalAlignment. What is that?

    this code throws a Null pointer exception. It was thrown by getChildAt(i). The getCount() returns the number of items in listView. But getChildAt(i) returns only if item is present in current list view. For example in a scrollable list view assume that there are 20 items. The getCount() returns 20. But getChildAt(20) returns null. Because it doesnot fit in listview.   • Error when deploying site of a maven multi module project with FTP

    I have a multi module project. When I launch mvn site:deploy, the deployment of the base module works fine, but it fails to create the directory of the module sites on the FTP server: [INFO] Error uploading site Embedded error: Required directory: '/myremoteftprepository/myproject-mymodule' is missing When I create the missing directory by hand, it works fine, but I would like to avoid that. It is surprising that the deploy command do not create it. Do you how to force this directory creation? Is it a bug in the wagon-ftp plugin?     I encounter some code like the following: BaseClass: public class BaseClass { String name = "Base"; public BaseClass() { printName(); } public void printName() { System.out.println(name + "——Base"); } } DrivedClass: public class SubClass extends BaseClass { String name = "Sub"; public SubClass() { printName(); } public void printName() { System.out.println(name + "——Sub"); } public static void main(String[] args) { new SubClass(); } } When run the code, the output is: null——Sub Sub——Sub while it should be: Base——Base Sub——Sub I wonder why the BaseClass constructor calls the SubClass method, can anybody explain this?     I have a grid of 30 buttons, and I want to have it from left to right then goes down, right to left, down again left to right. Basically the numbering would be as follow: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 20 19 18 17 16 15 14 13 12 11 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 30 So if I have a piece on the button 10 and I instruct it to move up 2 bits it would land on 12 not 19.     So far, I've used this approach to access this from the scope of an inner class: class FooManagementWindow extends JFrame { JButton rejectFoo; //... void getFooAcceptingPanel(){ //... final FooManagementWindow referenceToThis = this; rejectFoo = new JButton("Reject"); rejectFoo.addEventListener(new EventListener() { @Override public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent arg) { referenceToThis.setEnabled(false); //this requires a network call //... referenceToThis.setEnabled(true); //the user may resume his work } }); //... } } However, I just learned that instead of declaring referenceToThis, a direct reference is kept for me as: FooManagementWindow.this I have no reason to think my less standard approach may lead to errors or weird corner cases.     Recalling this post enumerating several problems of using singletons and having seen several examples of Android applications using singleton pattern, I wonder if it's a good idea to use Singletons instead of single instances shared through global application state (subclassing android.os.Application and obtaining it through context.getApplication()). What advantages/drawbacks would have both mechanisms? To be honest, I expect the same answer in this post http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2709071/singleton-pattern-with-web-application-not-a-good-idea but applied to Android. Am I correct?   • Wait between tasks with SingleThreadExecutor

    I am trying to (simply) make a blocking thread queue, where when a task is submitted the method waits until its finished executing. The hard part though is the wait. Here's my 12:30 AM code that I think is overkill: public void sendMsg(final BotMessage msg) { try { Future task; synchronized(msgQueue) { task = msgQueue.submit(new Runnable() { public void run() { sendRawLine("PRIVMSG " + msg.channel + " :" + msg.message); } }); //Add a seperate wait so next runnable doesn't get executed yet but //above one unblocks msgQueue.submit(new Runnable() { public void run() { try { Thread.sleep(Controller.msgWait); } catch (InterruptedException e) { log.error("Wait to send message interupted", e); } } }); } //Block until done task.get(); } catch (ExecutionException e) { log.error("Couldn't schedule send message to be executed", e); } catch (InterruptedException e) { log.error("Wait to send message interupted", e); } } As you can see, there's alot of extra code there just to make it wait 1.7 seconds between tasks. Is there an easier and cleaner solution out there or is this it?

  • Passing bundle to activity set as singletask

    So I have a MapActivity that runs an asynchtask that occasionally updates what exactly it's displaying on the map (via a string). I originally pass this string in from the intent when the activity is first created. And then if you click on one of the drawables on the map, it opens a new activity, which can then create a new mapview (same class) with a different string setting. The problem I have is that I only want one instance of the mapview to be running at once. Thus I set android:launchmode="singletask" in the manifest. This works in that it brings the mapactivity to the front, but is there any way to send it a new intent bundle to get a new setting for the string it needs? I tried regetting the extras from the bundle, but it seems to retain the old bundle, not the new intent that was passed to it. I'm not sure I want to do startActivityForResult because the 2nd activity may or may not want to update the original activity. I hope that made sense. I can post code if necessary, but I think that should explain my situation.
